Weight Gainers: What did YOU eat today?
I am copying the many times copied thread, "What did you eat today?" in hopes of helping some of those who are just starting to gain and have no clue what to eat. I know that when I began weight recovery, I was eating tons of low-cal foods just because that's what I was used to. I learned the hard way that dense foods are essential to weight gain when you have high caloric requirements (at one point I needed 4500 cal to maintain my weight on BEDREST). Perhaps newbies can get some ideas if we post our weight gain meal plans! Even if you're not gaining anymore, grab an old one and post it!:]
Please note that every body is different and some will need more or less calories than others to gain. This thread is just so that you can get an idea of what you need.
Oh, and yes, I'm breaking the "no calories, no portions" rule, since it is pretty helpful in this case. If you want to post cals/portions you can. I just ask that you don't post if you're not eating enough, though as this is a weight gain thread, I would hope none of you are undereating.;]
I'll start....
Breakfast (875 cal)*
- 1/2 cup oatmeal (150) cooked with
- 1 cup evaporated whole milk (300)
- 1 mashed banana (100)
- 2 tbsp peanut butter (200)
- 1 tbsp ground flaxseed and cinnamon to taste (50)
- 1 hard-boiled egg (75 cal)
Morning Snack (300 cal)*
- 1/4 cup mixed nuts (200)
- 1/4 cup dried apricots (100)
Lunch (660 cal)*
- 1/4 cup rice cooked in 1 cup chicken stock (300) and
- 1/2 cup canned or cooked chickpeas (145) and
- 1/3 cup shredded cheese (150) and
- 1/4 cup each onion, peppers, and tomato (30) cooked with
- 1 tbsp olive oil and curry powder to taste (120)
Afternoon snack (390 cal)*
- 1 serving baby carrots (35)
- 1/4 cup hummus (155)
- 1/4 cup mixed nuts (200)
Dinner (875 cal)*
- 1 cup of my insane Mac & Cheese recipe (515)
- 2 cups tossed salad (45)
- 2 tbsp rasins (60)
- 2 tbsp sunflower seeds (105)
- 2 tbsp dressing (150)
Evening snack (480)*
- 1 cup plain whole milk yogurt (180)
- 1/2 cup homemade granola (300)
About 3600 calories :]

hmm, so i think things are ok w me, lol. tomm i increase to 1600 but im trying to not think about it or to compare myself to others on these boards bc our bodies are all diff so who knows! i made dinner for myself and family for tomm night and the only thing im scared about is being able to eyeball the portions, the rice at least, like how to take it w/the serving spoon, but i can do it! also, i weigh 1x/wk-sat morning, this past week i ate btwn 1300-1450ish. im pretty srue weighing myself and seeing the numbers will be a neg trigger for me and i FEEL as if ive gained a ton, but i dont know. i dont know if i should weigh myself in order to gauge my progress or if its pointless since i still wasnt eating enough, im almost wondering if i sohuldnt weigh myself until i get to 1800 or so??? any sugestions? oh, and i ended up getting a PB Luna bar to have one morning for breakfast w an apple+yogurt b4 doing some weights-does that sound good?
PSYCHO-i read what you wrote on another post, about listening to your own hunger cues and maintaining and all, i have no advice and it is something i am scared of, listening to my body is a goal of mine 4 sure.
JSHARSHAR-oh yes, i can deff eat all that ice crea mand more, no worries!
thurs-
BFAST- oatmeal w/PB mixed in and some captain crunch PB cereal mixed in, an apple
SNACK- cottage cheese mixed w/some trail mix
LUNCH- cheese sandwich, fage yoguert, 1/2 an orange, cut up celery
SNACK- 1/2 english muffin w/ PB, trail mix, cut up fruit
DINNER-cheese sandwich melted w rasisins and dates, salad w trail mix
SNACK-apple and yogurt
i love dairy and cheese! thank goodness im not lactose intolerant! lol, altho i think i may have to lay off the oatmeal, it really backs me up!
Oh and wishfulxthinking.. I make it sometimes when I'm in a rush because its cranberry instant packets oatmeal and then I add in orange marmalade.. haha quite simple (: If you have the time though, you can make it from old fashioned oats, orange juice, splenda or sugar (or whatever sweetner), fresh cranberries or dried, or minus the orange juice and add marmalade. rReally any way you can add the orange cranberry flavor is good, i love itt(:
I'm too tired to post what I ate today so I'll do it tomorrow, but I went out tonight!! yay!
and jsharshar, read my last post! I can definitely put down a pint of ice cream and more unfortunately :\ doesn't feel very good. I do want some cranberrry orange oatmeal now, yum :)
agru- I also had some advice for you in my last post but I think it got left behind on the last page and overlooked, but don't worry about portioning your rice! The best thing you can do for yourself now is eat more than one serving and not worry about it!
Keep increasing those calories and enjoy all the good food everyone!
GIBBIT- Here's that recipe for cheesecake cupcakes: http://www.recipezaar.com/69634 &n bsp; I pulverized some strawberries in the food processor and swirled it on the tops before I baked them, and put strawberry halves on after they were cooked.
AGRUSKIN- Good luck getting to 1600 today! Who really cares if you take more than a serving of rice? The worst that could happen is that you'll gain more weight.. which isn't a bad thing at all. I love dairy too! I have yogurt at least twice a day.
Breakfast- Choc. chip mini waffles topped w/ soynut butter and chocolate soynut butter, oatmeal, egg, orange, almond milk
Snack- Don't know yet
Lunch- Soynut butter on whole wheat, Stonyfield w.m. yogurt, TLC peanut butter bar, carrots
Snack- Same as yesterday, I'm too lazy to type lol
Dinner- Quorn chik'n cutlets seasoned with whatever spices I feel like having tonight, white rice (ICK!), corn
Snack- Odwalla bar, apple, almonds, Boost plus
Extra cals: Ben & Jerry'
Aquaev: What is an Odwalla bar? I also know how you feel about white rice. But in the big scheme of things, some white rice every once and awhile is not going to hurt any of us! And the calories are pretty much the same, but I prefer brown. It will be okay though! I ,too, need to conquer more white foods, idk, maybe not. I made my own biscuits though for strawberry shortcake. They were from organically grown all natural flour though.....oh well! STILL WHITE!

I did not weigh myself today!!!! That is sort of a big step! The scale is just metal boxed crap! It means nothing! :)
Hi! It seems like everyone is doing great! I'm having a tough time with my meal plan for the nutritionist...here's what I had yesterday
breakfast: 1/2 cup kashi cereal with 1/2 cup skim milk
no snack
lunch: 1 cup romaine lettuce 1/3 cup chicken and two tomatoes
Snack: 1/2 kashia dark chocolate cherry bar
dinner: 1 egg white with 2 slices of green peppers
snack: 1 cup special k cereal with 1/2 cup 1%
not too great..
So yesterday I went and met with the people at Renfrew and I start the intense outpatient program on Monday.
Monday-Friday 9-2! I can't believe it's come to this, but for my son
and my husband I have to go and get better.
Anyone ever been to Renfrew? I'm in Charlotte, NC.
Hopefully things will get better once I start the program. I'm just scared with the mass quantities of food I know they're going to make me eat. Any suggestions?
psycho- We do seem a lot alike! I'm athletic to the extreme but always have been. Once the ED kicked in it became more about controlling my body and the exercise and not the fun aspect anymore. I would love to go back to just enjoying it and not thinking about how many calories I burn doing it. I grew up dancing and then did competitive gymnastics for a long time, dabbled in soccer, 4 years of swim team in highschool, I did capoeira for 3 years and had to stop last year but am hoping to get back into it this fall. I've always biked as well, trails and so on, or hiking. I started running last summer but haven't done it since all this started, and this last year I also started rock climbing and kayaking. whew! extensive list, huh? I also am deathly afraid of white foods lol.
I am so tempted to weigh because I feel like I've gained a million pounds this last week since I started seriously doing more strenght training and have gone back to eating 4000 calories a day, plus a few binges :X damn the scale!! I'm going to hold off until tomorrow.
here's what I ate yesterday:
breakfast- apple, rhubarb, muesli, walnuts, flaxseed, dried fruits and nuts, wm yogurt, protein powder and wm powder, sweetened with honey. apple juice.
snack- more apple juice mixed with another scoop of whey protein.
lunch- black bean soup, crackers, spinach salad with walnuts, olive oil and lemon juice. Mixed berry juice.
snack- oatmeal made with soymilk, whole milk powder, almonds, goji berries, banana. Coconut cookies with peanut butter. Tea.
Dinner- Thai restaurant, spring rolls, Stir fry with fried tofu and broccoli, small portion of white rice (AAAA! peer pressure? I didn't want my friend to think I was weird)
Snack- Hot chocolate made with soymilk, wm powder, coconut cookies and dried mango
5 am- more coconut cookies with almond butter, and jam (yesterday or today?)
And tonight I think my family is finally going to force me to celebrate my birthday which was on the 15th, we're going out for my cousin's which is today, and I REALLY don't want to because I"m sure they'll bring me some proccessed death by chocolate, white flour and corn syrup type cake that I will be forced to eat. GROSS GROSS GROSS

AQUA-ill often have 3 yogurts, cheese sandwiches for lunch and dinner, and then sometiems cottage cheese 4 a snack! lol
GIBBIT-youre right about taking more and gaining, what happens w/me though is when im unsure about something ill restrict later, dumb. what stregnth training do you do? i got a sort of free weights'toning routine from a magazine that i do 2x/wk.
so im up to 1600 today. tomm is my 1/wk weigh in, unsure as to whether i should weigh myself bc up until now i was under my bmr- i THINK its 1500. i feel as though ive gained tons, i know thats the point, also hearing that you may intiialy gain a lot and then it tapers or something? any advice as to whether i should weigh or not?

When I was doing my out-patient therapy my therapist never believed me when I said I had never weighed myself. It has been one of those things where its better for me not to know, I would rather just eat the amount I think I need. Try not to weigh.. I think you will form a healthy relationship with yourself, personally.
question, is anyone still doing intense workouts while weight gain? if so how much more are you eating on top of your weight gain calories? I am training for soccer and a hlaf marathon.. but I still don't know how much more I should be eating?:S
Does anyone know where I can buy kashi in the uk? kashi golean? It suionds so yummy!
enia- I have been doing what I would call intense workouts all through my weight gain.(20 pounds!!!!) When I was counting calories, I would make sure and eat back all my calories. When I stopped counting, I basically ate like a mad woman. Now, I am at a healthy weight and do not really have to worry about gaining.(maybe another 2 pounds) I think that without exercise, I honestly would not have done as well as I have :) I am addicted, but it is a healthy addiction. Also, I want to train for a half too! But I am only 13...my life goal is to run a marathon though. That is another reason to get my knee all better, so I can throughout my whole life!
gibbit: I love soccer also. I did ballet and jazz when I was younger but did not like it. I have swam for a summer swim team for five years. I love biking as well. When my class went on our class trip we went to a camp. There was a 40 foot rock climbing wall. I was the only girl in my whole class to get all the way to the top!!!! I also play v-ball. Running and basketball are my faves though. (bball is the best though) Without sports, man, I would be so bored!
So far today:
Breakfast: Fiberone cereal mixed with organic yogurt!(with a dab of yoplait too)
Lunch: Peanut butter sandwich(whole wheat sugar free bread and some organic peanut butter and all natural peanut butter as well) with all natural pretzels
Snack: Not sure yet :\
Dinner: Probably a kashi frozen meal.....there is nothing to eat here! My mom is away and she does not get back until tomorrow night :0
Peanut_butter: I don't think we have Kashi over here, but I've heard Dorset Cereals are pretty similar and tasty (: Cereal's not my favourite thing, mind - I prefer porridge.
anyway update: i got discharged fro the outpatient place i was going to this monday :) the dietician said i should get my period anytime now and then i can officially stop gaining (yey)
so, ive slowed the gaining down alot, i know i maintain on 1800!
breakfast: pear with yogurt and special k mini breaks
snack: banana and date cake topped with pumpkin seeds and a malted hot choc.
lunch: sandwich from a deli - 2 slices of wholewheat bread with lettuce, cucumber, tomato, roasted peppers, black olives, sweetcorn, mango chutney and mashed avocado!
snack: 6 marmite biscuits and a 'big eat' bag of monster munch with a glass of milk
tea: baked potato topped with a mixed bean and lentil casserole and veggies
snack: banana and ice cream milkshake and a bowl of oatmeal
charlie-that is so fabulous!! congratulations! have you added in any excercise into your maintenace routine? keep up the great work! even on a "mainteneace" level your meal plan sounds great! that cake, holy cow!! lol and i still want marmite!!
i still dont know if its just in my head that i look better or not and i dont want to ask my parents bc the topic is never a good one. im trying to get enough food, 1600 starting today, so im thinking maybe i wont weigh myself till next sat? that way id be eating over my bmr for a week by then. any sugestions?

snack: pear with almond butter, sea salt and pepper potato puffs, bite of a walnut banana muffin (own recipe)
lunch: peanut tofu jerky, 1 cup heritage o's cereal, few crackers, almond pudding for dessert :)
snack: frozen strawberry banana juice box, source yogurt, watermleon
dinner: 2 cups wild mushrooms sauteed in 1 tbsp canola oil and 1 tbsp soy sauce, 1/3 cup sweet and sour tofu mixed in
snack: apple
breakfast: 1 packet organic oatmeal and 1/2 cup quick cooking oats
snack: chocolate protein shake, large apple
lunch: big bowl of cherries, raspberries, and strawberries, carrots, ham, cheese, tomato, and lettuce on a garden spinach wrap and blueberry yogurt
dinner: steak with red skin potatoes, broccoli, carrots, dinner roll, cantaloupe, mushrooms
snack/dessert: triple berry pie with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream
so most of you must be from canada or europe bc source yougurt, or exotik or whatever-we dont have that in the US but everyone is talking about it on these boards. sounds so good!
AHHH agruskin, I feel your pain! I wish I lived in Europe because of all the cool food they have! I wanna try that yogurt... and Eat Natural bars too!
enia-when I was counting, I would eat at least 3000 NET calories. Whatever I burned off through exercise, I added onto that. :)
I just got home from a spin class. Holy cow! That was awesome, and probably the hardest exercise I have ever done. I was dripping with sweat and my clothes were completely SOAKED. But I would not have it any other way. I love to push myself. I hope to one day teach classes like that at my gym! Cannot wait to do it again!
