Weight Gainers: What did YOU eat today?
I am copying the many times copied thread, "What did you eat today?" in hopes of helping some of those who are just starting to gain and have no clue what to eat. I know that when I began weight recovery, I was eating tons of low-cal foods just because that's what I was used to. I learned the hard way that dense foods are essential to weight gain when you have high caloric requirements (at one point I needed 4500 cal to maintain my weight on BEDREST). Perhaps newbies can get some ideas if we post our weight gain meal plans! Even if you're not gaining anymore, grab an old one and post it!:]
Please note that every body is different and some will need more or less calories than others to gain. This thread is just so that you can get an idea of what you need.
Oh, and yes, I'm breaking the "no calories, no portions" rule, since it is pretty helpful in this case. If you want to post cals/portions you can. I just ask that you don't post if you're not eating enough, though as this is a weight gain thread, I would hope none of you are undereating.;]
I'll start....
Breakfast (875 cal)*
- 1/2 cup oatmeal (150) cooked with
- 1 cup evaporated whole milk (300)
- 1 mashed banana (100)
- 2 tbsp peanut butter (200)
- 1 tbsp ground flaxseed and cinnamon to taste (50)
- 1 hard-boiled egg (75 cal)
Morning Snack (300 cal)*
- 1/4 cup mixed nuts (200)
- 1/4 cup dried apricots (100)
Lunch (660 cal)*
- 1/4 cup rice cooked in 1 cup chicken stock (300) and
- 1/2 cup canned or cooked chickpeas (145) and
- 1/3 cup shredded cheese (150) and
- 1/4 cup each onion, peppers, and tomato (30) cooked with
- 1 tbsp olive oil and curry powder to taste (120)
Afternoon snack (390 cal)*
- 1 serving baby carrots (35)
- 1/4 cup hummus (155)
- 1/4 cup mixed nuts (200)
Dinner (875 cal)*
- 1 cup of my insane Mac & Cheese recipe (515)
- 2 cups tossed salad (45)
- 2 tbsp rasins (60)
- 2 tbsp sunflower seeds (105)
- 2 tbsp dressing (150)
Evening snack (480)*
- 1 cup plain whole milk yogurt (180)
- 1/2 cup homemade granola (300)
About 3600 calories :]

Hey all! I am BACK!!! I missed you all so much. I had a great time though. I did not worry about food or exercise really. Between all the water skiing, tubing, wake boarding, kayaking, whitewater rafting, and ALL the other stuff we did I could have eaten probably 4000 cals! I had such an amazing time, but I am glad to be home :)
I feel so lost here though. I am so confused. Basically all I have learned so far is that Agruskin is going on a DATE!!! Have an amazing time and I CANNOT WAIT to hear a report.
Angel-Where do you work? Could you bring something to snack on while there? Maybe some trail mix you could grab every time you pass by. Have a great night whatever happens :)
this is getting harder everyday as i'm noticing my weight gain...in the most terrible place..thighs and stomach. i'm also feeling so bloated. but i know for a fact that i'll be doing much more damage to my body and mind if i went back to my ED.anyways here's whats for today..
breakfast: mini wheats cereal with skimmed milk and orange juice =250 cals
snack: apple juice=100 cals
lunch: chicken breast grilled pieces+ wholewheat toast+ green salad=250 cals
dinner: fruit salad 250cals
night snack: glass skimmed milk + plain crackers 200 cals
that's so low in cals as i also did 500 calories cycling plus 15 minutes aerobics. but that's because i had classes all day long and no chance of much snacking after the exercise...hopefully tomorrow i'll eat more. and as if that wasn't enough, i had laxatives today.i don't abuse them though, max. twice a week, but they help alot AND MAKE ME FEEL EMPTIER AND THUS EAT MORE!!! *hopefully*
psychoj- Welcome back! We all missed you. Haha, I felt the same when I got back from Italy. I had no idea what was going on.
Sooooo instead of going to the cafe place we went to a sandwich shop called Potbelly's. I was freaking out and trying to estimate cals in my head but then I did what my therapist calls "self talking". It's when you think rationally to convince yourself that nothing bad will happen if you eat more than usual. So then I told myself to shut up and ate the sandwich! I feel rather guilty now though because when I eat something high cal, I like it to be made of a lot of good food so I stay full. But this was just one sandwich!
Lunch- Vegetarian sub on wheat roll
Snack- Boost smoothie, carrots, berries, Yoplait kids, pudding
Dinner- 3 slices natural pizza (forget the brand name), carrots, smooze fruit ice
Snack- Orange, almonds, blueberries, Luna sunrise bar, extra ice cream with a banana, Ben and Jerry'
welcome back psychoj!! That sounds like so much fun! Where did you go? I love outdoor sports! I fell off a bike last week and fractured my pinky and really banged up the rest of my right arm so I can't do anything right now :(
Relena- You're doing great! Just keep increasing those calories and it will get better. I had written a long list of suggestions but I'm sending them to you in a message so this isn't so long!
aqua- that looks like a really good day! good job on the 3 slices of pizza. pizza scares me lol. And I love ice cream. I also talk to myself or sometiems argue, but it works to give me a dose of reality sometimes. Extra food is ok, especially since we're gaining, and a veggie sub on wheat is really healthy. I also like all my calories to come from highly nutritious sources but we have to remind ourselves that food is sometimes just for enjoyment too.
so far today:
b- barley mixed with oats made with vanilla soymilk, dried dates, pecans, honey. apple. chai tea latte.
s- protein shake made with scoop protein powder mixed into berry juice
l- salad with sunflower seeds, poached egg, and olive oil/ vinegar dressing. cucumber and cream cheese on toast. apple juice
s- wm yogurt, blueberries, rhubarb, dried mango. 1/2 ezekial english muffin with 2 tbsp sunbutter and honey.
d- don't know yet
going to a party tonight. aaaaaaa alcohol!!
alrt, back from the date. he was a dork! and i was not physically attracted at all, not that im much to look at eaither these days! we met at dunkin donuts, he got UNSWEETENED iced tea, i got iced coffee, he didnt even mention donuts-which i had pre "allowed" for in my head, and convo eventually got to weight! i didnt really know waht to say when he sort of said i was really skinny or something like that, so i just shrugged and said i dunno why. i think overall i did well, i think he was more interested than i was, hug hello and bye and all, i dnt really care if i never see him again bc im not really into him, but i think it was a good 1st step. so im proud of myself. only thing is, he found me from a dating site that i had once signed onto like 3 years ago and never went back to bc it was skeevy, so like, i dont really have anywhere to meet ppl for another chance at this whole dating thing.
PSYCHOJ-i knew you could do it! wow--sooo acitve, was that w/family? my family is the "lazy" family, lol, we dont do stuff like that, sounds like a blast!!!!
ANGEL-yes, deff take snacks, you can always chow down a granola bar or something.
RELENA-when ppl start eating after starving themselves-bloating and rapid weight gain will happen, it will also taper off. you neeeed to continue eating, and eating more. the sooner you increasethe sooner the bloating will settle. and try and reduce the excercise as well as laxatives-both are canceling out your actual efforts to gain.
AQUA-The self talk is a great method, so im actually a psychologist but it doesnt matter, whatever, yours is deff rt and self talk, combined w/ the actual action, does lead to change. i knwo its hard but the more we actually do the behavior, the more comfortable we will become. mmm, pizza, remember the brand, lol! kashi thin crust is great btw!
GIBBIT- a party, woohoo!!!! i dont do alcohol anymore, i stopped w/ the ed bc i thought it was "empty cals". i dont mean to be an alcoholic but i know an occasional drink should be enjoyed, something i sort of need to work on, deff not a priority tho!

So today I went to the beach with friends - brought some snacks but really I just enjoyed myself and didn't think about eating (thus the reason why I definitely didn't eat enough today) - it was just SOOO nice to take a day without counting or pre-planning, and eating because I'm hungry, not because it's "time" to eat.
Breakfast (6 am, pre-drive): 1/2 cup scrambled egg whites with 1/2 an avocado; 2 slices wheat toast
Snack (during the drive): 3/4 cup Fage 0%; 1 banana
"Lunch" on the beach: Kashi Pumpkin Spice Flax granola bar; 1 apple
Dinner after getting home: baby carrots; 3/4ths a wheat pita stuffed with homemade falafel, hummus, and tomatoes
Dessert: 1 cup soy milk with 1 packet chocolate Carnation Instant Breakfast and 1 banana

psychoj-good idea with the granola..its high cal and easy to just grab while on the go..oh yeah, I work at perkins haha I'm a hostess!
lunch- seitan, cannelini, olive oil, red wine vinegar, spinach, broccoli, spices. about 300
s- tofu pudding (no it's not gross :p) w/ pb and cocoa 200
then i had to go to work...so i didnt have granola on me today. I grabbed a kashi tlc cookie, which was TINY to have been 130 calories. disappointing. and I made a 100 bag of popcorn on the go while I was driving heh. Also ate a serving of soy crisps at some point...350 cals total?
just got home and had- 1 cup soymilk w/ honey, stevia. 2 slices whole wheat bread w/, cottage cheese, blueberries, mighty bites. - guessing 300 calories
I only went up to maintenance today. suckssss! ![]()
GIBBIT-We went to the mountains in nc. It was really fun! Sorry to hear about that accident.
Agruskin-Yeah, my family is pretty active. We brought our boat so that helped too. Too bad about the guy. I am sure you will have many more dates to come though! :)

agru- Sorry the date didn't go well! But it's great that you got out anyway. And the brand of pizza was Palermo's. It was yummy, but I like Kashi better!
angeleyes- The tofu pudding sounds good! I have a package of tofu that needs to be used up. Did you have the recipe? Do you like nuts? Almonds and walnuts are really portable and make it super easy to get cals in. How much do you eat to gain?
Breakfast- Oatmeal w/ pumpkin, WW mini bagel with cream cheese, nectarine, egg
Snack- Popcorn and strawberries
Lunch- WW English muffin pizza, Stonyfield Farms WM yogurt, TLC PB bar, carrots
Snack- I don't know yet
Dinner- Morningstar pizza burger on wheat bun w/ provolone and ketchup, baked fries, WW cheddar bunnies
Snack- Almonds, orange, Kashi oatmeal :), strawberry banana shake, Ben and Jerry'
upping my cals to 2000 calories this week..today is just a little lower but i'm getting there!
breakfast: mini wheats cereal with skimmed milk +orange juice+ wholewheat toast with peanut butter and honey 400 cals
snack: apple juice+ reese's peanut butter mini cup 200 cals
2nd snack: skimmed milk with peanut butter, nutella and honey crackers 300 cals
lunch: 4 tbsp jello + grilled chicken breast pieces with pasta and hummus salad 500 cals
snack: fruit salad 100 cals
that's it for today. a little unhealthy choices though. i exercised today and burned 500 calories cycling alongside with some aerobics and dancing.
Hey all! I am back from church.
Relena-Do you like nuts? I mean raw nuts. They are so incredibly easy to eat and have tons of healthy cals. I think like a cup of walnuts or pecans(I do not remember) has nearly 900 calories. (I may be wrong, but I think not)
Aquaev-I cannot find the little cups of certain flavors of b+j's. All I can find are the little brownie flavor and cookie dough and Cherry Garcia. Where do you get the little cups? Whole Foods or a normal grocery store? I need more variety :)

Agruskin-I eat on my own most of the time for breakfast/lunch although occasionally we will eat out for lunch or my mom will make something I like for breakfast. But when it comes to dinner, I eat what my mom/dad makes, unless I have to eat early or no one is home, etc. I do cook for my family "often" and I love it! This week I am going to try pasta with fresh mozzarella and tomatoes! Yum yum :D
So today so far is:
Breakfast: Kashi heart to heart blueberry...something;I forget with milk
Lunch: Peanut butter(and I love to put lots of pb on it!) sandwich, TLC Crackers, and an apple
Snack: Hardboiled egg and a large orange
I do not know what else yet. We do not have like anything in our house so I am kind of limited. But we are going to the gym and the GROCERY store today. Thank goodness! I need my food!
(This is clearly not enough to eat yet BUT I have limited supply :) )
hey-so i ussually eat my own food and when i dont it makes me anxious that i dont know exactly how it was prepared or what the cals are for it. i know, its very ED of me and i want to stop, i need to more like it. tonight my mom is making salmon, not sure yet how shes making it altho shes a huge, huge fan of oil. now i know salmon is a good food, its just that when i look it up the cals range by so much plus its not like i use a scale to portion it so its tough for me. also corn on the cob has been a fear food of mine for some reason and think were having that, but the same thing w the big range of cals shown. i know these are both good foods, i just dont know how to "count" them which i guess is pretty dumb.

Hi everyone. Im BACK!!! from my hols in devon. I haad a pretty good time although the weather did us no favours lol. Unfortunatly i barely scraped 2000 calories most days and did a lot of walking. One day we did 6 miles!! The last two days have been even worse and i have barely got over 1000 caloires. Plus me and my dad had the worst argument ever. At one point i actually thought he was going to turn round and hit me he was so angry. He completly humiliated me and shouted and bawled at me in the middle of a town centre. It was awful and i am having such a hard time eating. I have never been so scared of him before.
On the plus side i tried lots of new things on holiday like: A sticky bakery cinnamon bun, an ice cream, a crustless green vegetable quiche and a Starbucks chocolate banana vivianno smothie which was delicous. I also found some great bars called Trek bars which have 11g of protein too.
I know i need to get my calories back up to where they were, before i went away i was shooting for 2200 calories. I have my weigh in tommorow and i am rather worried. Also i am concerend at what this dip in calories has done to my metabolism, how important is it to keep my calories consistant? I need some advice on what i should be aiming for calories wise. Why do some many people need such high calories like 3000 - 4000 in in-patient and still find it hard to gain??

Ahaha. I was unfortunately veerrryy low on cals yesterday due to power walking for freaking HOURS and totally not by choice, either. So today I'm RAVENOUS. Isn't it so cool how the body does that?! It just makes up for it!! Intuitive eating may not be far away!
As a side note - I would have NEVER been able to last that long speed walking before. =) I'm getting to strong! Hehe. I can carry more weight than a few of my *ahem* larger friends. It must look funny - me carrying like ten stuffed grocery bags and my friend struggling with two or three.
I've been picking all day.. not really bothering counting.. sooo.. can't really remember everything. Ahaha. I know it includes my Syrupberry Oatmeal, and LOADS of fruit and yogurt. I also had some chicken... brussels sprouts (OMG LOVE THESE)... oh! Grapefruit... Uhhhmm... random handfuls of some cereal (which is ungodly high in calories - like, how do they fit that many into 2/3 of a cup!? lmao).
Butterfly-Welcome back!!! We missed you! Sorry to hear about the fight with your dad. Do not worry about all the under eating, just get RIGHT back on track :) As for the "Why do people in IP require so many cals, just send a message to tuffstuff07(not sure if I got that exactly right)
Wistful-I know! Isn't is amazing how our bodies work? If you listen to it and give it what it needs, it will work PERFECTLY!
Kashi has FOUR NEW PRODUCTS!!! I am eating the new frozen en-tree. Go to the kashi website for more information.(They have one new frozen entree, and three new pocket sandwiches) I will post at the end of the night what I have eaten today :)

I lost weight while on this vacation. I think that I am struggling to eat more today because of it. I loose weight, so my ED voice says "You should not eat much today." Keep up the good work!" Shut UP YOU FREAKING ED VOICE! (Sorry for the language!)
