Weight Gainers: What did YOU eat today?
I am copying the many times copied thread, "What did you eat today?" in hopes of helping some of those who are just starting to gain and have no clue what to eat. I know that when I began weight recovery, I was eating tons of low-cal foods just because that's what I was used to. I learned the hard way that dense foods are essential to weight gain when you have high caloric requirements (at one point I needed 4500 cal to maintain my weight on BEDREST). Perhaps newbies can get some ideas if we post our weight gain meal plans! Even if you're not gaining anymore, grab an old one and post it!:]
Please note that every body is different and some will need more or less calories than others to gain. This thread is just so that you can get an idea of what you need.
Oh, and yes, I'm breaking the "no calories, no portions" rule, since it is pretty helpful in this case. If you want to post cals/portions you can. I just ask that you don't post if you're not eating enough, though as this is a weight gain thread, I would hope none of you are undereating.;]
I'll start....
Breakfast (875 cal)*
- 1/2 cup oatmeal (150) cooked with
- 1 cup evaporated whole milk (300)
- 1 mashed banana (100)
- 2 tbsp peanut butter (200)
- 1 tbsp ground flaxseed and cinnamon to taste (50)
- 1 hard-boiled egg (75 cal)
Morning Snack (300 cal)*
- 1/4 cup mixed nuts (200)
- 1/4 cup dried apricots (100)
Lunch (660 cal)*
- 1/4 cup rice cooked in 1 cup chicken stock (300) and
- 1/2 cup canned or cooked chickpeas (145) and
- 1/3 cup shredded cheese (150) and
- 1/4 cup each onion, peppers, and tomato (30) cooked with
- 1 tbsp olive oil and curry powder to taste (120)
Afternoon snack (390 cal)*
- 1 serving baby carrots (35)
- 1/4 cup hummus (155)
- 1/4 cup mixed nuts (200)
Dinner (875 cal)*
- 1 cup of my insane Mac & Cheese recipe (515)
- 2 cups tossed salad (45)
- 2 tbsp rasins (60)
- 2 tbsp sunflower seeds (105)
- 2 tbsp dressing (150)
Evening snack (480)*
- 1 cup plain whole milk yogurt (180)
- 1/2 cup homemade granola (300)
About 3600 calories :]

AQUA- hope therapy went well! do you make the brocc+cheese thing? the fage was very good, my whole lunch was out of this world, seriously!
so, im feeling a little piggish rt now, im stuffed but im forcing myself to eat. i know others are eating more. i know i want to gain. but im not hungry. what do ppl do when they plan their day and then become full, or plan it and then you get dinner but dont want what you planned? sometimes im really hungry for dinner, but other times im just not, like now. i dont know waht to do then?

thomas mini bagel square, 1 tbspn PB, apple, hardboiled egg ( ieat the whole thing, have been, still have low cholsterol so try and not be scared guys!) ~430
1 cAll Bran extra fiver, 3/4 c milk, tbspn trail mix ~200

Ok, I have to say this, what's going on with all you fage 2% eaters?!?! We're weight gainers, get Fage Total! It tastes the same and has incredible nutritional value for us since we need those fats. Please, get full fat everything!
angeleyes- good job going out and having fun! Junk food and no sleep is what girly sleepovers are all about. I get so nervous in situations like that but it's something we really need to do.
lala- congrats on conquering a fear food! I'm sorry it had such a bad effect on you! Hopefully it was just that your body wasn't used to it, although eggs seem like such an easily digestible food? Oh well, the important thing is you did it and you lived! I used to be afraid of pretty much everything :\ it was horrible, but this is how we get over it, one food at a time.
agruskin- your earlier post was so inspirational! Thanks for sharing! I usually eat even when full. It kind of sucks and it's uncomfortable, but I know I need to eat and plus it also causes anxiety now if I can't get in all of my scheduled meals lol, I just can't get away from my ocd!
well, here's my day-
b- banana, blueberries, dried apricots, walnuts, granola, in whole milk yogurt and soy milk.
l- veggie burger on ww bread, rainbow chard, cucumber and carrot salad with olive oil and vinegar. Apple juice.
s- v8 vegetable juice
s- lots of batter while baking a strawberry jam and walnut cake.
s- apple slices with chunky pb
d- ww spaghetti with tofu mushroom cream sauce and pecan pesto, extra olive oil swirled in, side salad and brocolli. apple juice
s- I'm planning on the Jam cake with probably chocolate ice cream and who knows what else.
I probably eat the most at night right before bed and it hasn't made me fat yet. I just got into that habit of taking advantage of every waking hour to eat and now I don't feel satisfied unless I'm crawling into bed completely full.
gibbit- yeah, most of the stuff in my fridge is low fat/fat free. BAD, I know. We should all get full fatt versions, or at least vary it with some foods. Like get some low fat, others full fat, that way we don't feel so bad about it (at least I know I feel bad when I eat large amounts of any kind of saturated fat haha..)
agru- i also loved your post! You're doing so well girl, keep it up! haha I used to wish I was so skinny so that I could eat anything I want. Now that I have the chance, I don't! And I also was the person that always thought, "wow, I could never stop eating. It's impossible for me to EVER have anorexia". But you know, I actually have learned something from this. I am not any happier now than when I was my higher weight; I don't know why I ever thought it would lead to greater happiness and satisfaction. I actually now realize I should've just been happy with myself all along! I've never been chubby, I mean 105-110 is not fat by all means! I was at a perfect weight, but I disregarded it because I just wanted to be perfectly fit..
so yessss, let's eat! I mean, even if we eat healthy but only 1000 cals a day is even worse than just eating junk food. I mean we could seriously be harming our bodies...I don't want to hurt myself anymore. I want to love myself and fuel my bodyyy the way it's supposed to :-) woo
by the way, I've been eating like 2000-2500 a day (I estimate). but today I went to the dietitian, and even AFTER all I ate last night...I lost .1 lbs. I know, not significant, but considering all I ate i was like.. WHAT! I'm kind of disappointed. I mean she told me I should eat 2200 to gain, but dude, I've been doing that and i lost?? is my metabolism crazy? do i need to eat like 3000. aagh
THe broccoli and cheese thing souns delish, although Im not really a big fan of cheese (seriously scarred for life when walking through what I consider the smelliest aisle in the grocery store lol, just kidding). What kind of B&J...do they have all flavors...have yet to try cheery garcia, but it'd be the perfect xcuse to get some if it comes in a small container, so if I dislike it, which I pretty much doubt will happen, I don't have to worry about wasting.
Yes, I force myself to eat as well even when Im not hungry and even then I seem to have a hard time managing to squeeze in enough cals. I find that having one little nibble tends to lead me to being very hungry about 15 mins. later though (weird right?).
Eggs, oh yes I had a tough time conquering them as well, but you managed to surpass your fears of pancakes and eggs are wayyy more beneficial.
BTW, You guys are so right, enough is enough! I need to seriously stop worrying about numbers (both cals and scales) and just live my life. I totally agree angeleyes, I was looking through old pics and I looked a lot better when I had some weight on my bones, why couldn't I just appreciate it when I had the chance?! and same with the whole wishing to be super skinny so I could eat whatever I wanted...not much of a priviledge if you ask me. Well Im of to florida tomorrow with the fam and then next week I start my internship, so you might not hear from me for awhile, but I wish you all the best of luck...just keep at it and eventually you will meet your goals!
For breakfast I had a parfait concoction of cereal, soy yogurt, nuts, seeds, and fruit. I had a protein shake with bannana and strawberry
Snack was a LUNA bar, then Lunch a grilled chicken sandwich with reallly high cal bread. I'm bored so I'm not going to post the rest of my day haha... but I just need someone to tell

breakfast: 400 cals
honey mini wheats with skimmed milk+orange juice + nutella wholeawheat toast+2 prunes
snack: 260 before chemistry class
2 prunes+1 fig with skimmed milk+1 reese's pb minicup
lunch: 600 cals after chemistry class
edam cheese+smoked turkey+lettuce+2 wholewheat toasts
dinner: 350 cals
1 wholewheat toast with honey + 1 pomegranate+2prunes+2figs
total: 1600 cals.
I AM SICK OF ENDING THE DAY HAVING EATING SO LOW!!
so, i'm planning but not so sure it it, to make a pancake at night to add the cals without much stuff. 300 cals. and still not enough as i need to have at least 2000 cals to be able to exercise burning 600 cals today..any suggestions please?![]()
also, i'm making a sponge cake for my mom's birthday today!! it'll be very simple but i'll top half of it with jam and fruit and the other half with be with nutella!! i haven't had a cake in like a year or so, the last time i tasted it i went binging.ugh. i don't know whether i should be eating from it today as i'm still afraid of eating at night..it's stupid coz i do know that i still have at least 400-500 cals to have before i could go exercising. but it's still hard to get myself to do it and eat it and not binge.

charlieuk: thanks for the great ideas, i like the sound of the banana milk an pb smoothie, i think im gonna get a hand blender ting today so i can make it 2moro :) and i was also thinkin of baking some healthy treats too, gr8 ideas!!
agruskin: im havin the same prob as u at the mo, i mean im eatin enough that im maintaing but i am findin it hard to eat any more in oreder for me to gain cause i never feel hungry as it is and i find it mentally an physically challengin to stomach any more food. it makes me feel like im jus eatin outta boredom or something. i dunnno mayb its the eds way of tryin to get control back???
gibbit: haha i luv ur last paragraph, good on u for takin advantage of it :) i thought i was gonna be like that once my nutirionist told me to eat alot more but nope turns out its harder at the start than i thought. keep up the gr8 work :)
angeleyes137: mayb ur metab has like sky rocketed and is super fast now? mayb if u increase by a small bit ul gain? i know though easier sed than done right? mayb ur bodys jus used to the cals and has hit a plateau i heard that can happed. how long have u beem tryin to gain for?
aeropink161: i totaly agree about the numbers thing. like i used to seriously obsess over the scale and now that my mum has it an i can only see it wen i ask im not half as bad as i used to be. like if the numbers went up at all i wud freak out but not havin it there every morning has made such a difference, its like i feel free in a way from staring at that stupid box every morning lol. hope u have a gr8 holiday :)
relena: you cud try adding peanut butter to ur intake as thats pretty high in cals and is full of protein. or have u ever had oatcakes? there like crackers with 50 cals per one an are small but really healthy, i have them with pb an its a good way to fit more cals in??
so today heres my planned intake:
b- cereal and milk (300)
snack- fortisip (300 cals)
lunch- sandwhich with eggwhite turkey and sweetocrn (300)
snack-fortisip(300)
dinner- omlette with 1 egg and 1 egg white, mushrooms, turkey and red peppers( 200 cals)
im hopin to squeeze in some almonds somehwere as im only eatin around 1500 cals at the mo an am meant to be gaining.
so how long do u guys leave between meals? like do u eat whenever? or every 2 hrs/3hrs??
im finidin it so hard to eat more cause im jus not hungry , i drink like 2litres water 2 cups coffee and 4 glasses of diet coke a day , mayb thats makin me not hungry, do u guys think if i cut out the coke a bit or somethin i uwd be hungrier??
any ideas on how to increase my appetite?

So, I got overly frustrated last night as I realised I'd fallen short of 3500 at least, and did something I haven't done in a long, long time.
I ate a handful of cashew nuts.
LOL, right? I don't like nuts very much but I was angry because I'd come short again. I've more or less cut right back on exercise now because I would struggle to eat all of it back, and now my ED is working in reverse: "oh, you haven't worked out, you should eat less". But I know that if I exercise and don't eat it back it won't help my metabolism right now, so, nope! I had a handful of nuts before bed instead.
I am a little afraid of my weigh in on Friday, though. My measurements have changed in places and I'm worried my couple of weeks of estimating and just eating otherwise may have caused excessive (as in, over 2lbs a week) gain. .__.; It's hard because I feel like I'm bingeing every day when I'm not.
agruskin sorry i didnt post my food in the end but i felt like such a failure...i ate maintenance again ;( ive just been reading the thread on metabolism and i realies i need to stop counting in order to do this so heres todays plan: dont count until ive eaten everything i want!! god i hope this goes well but its so scary..ah im such a wimp
ill finish eating at about midnight uk time (about 6pm us depending on where you are) and ill post then...wish me luck!
aussie ah i remember not feeling hungry at first...you will though, ive cut out all diet coke (except maybe once a week) and have one coffee only which seems to help! talking to you about healthy baking has made me want to...i think im going to do some later ;)
gibbit- I usually don't eat Fage 2%. I normally get Total with the strawberry sauce, or I put honey in the plain. It's just that we were out of the whole milk yogurt I usually eat, and I needed my dairy fix! I feel exactly the same about having to go to bed full. I can't sleep if I'm hungry or not satisfied with what I just ate. I don't know if you read my post about this before, but I asked my nutritionist about what to do when we get hungry from eating 3000+ cals. She laughed and said eat more, basically. Sooo she wasn't much help.
angeleyes- Sorry you lost. It's just that your metabolism is supercharged right now. I lost 1.5 lbs from eating 2700, so you'll probably eventually have to up your cals to 3000.
aeropink- Yeah, the broccoli and cheese things were pretty good. They were actually made of soy cheese instead of dairy. At my supermarket they have vanilla, fudge brownie, cherry garcia, cookie dough and strawberry cheesecake. Haha, I highly doubt you won't like Ben and Jerry's!
aussiegirl- I usually eat once every two hours, three hours max. But I'm always munching on something so sometimes it's only like 30 minutes!
Breakfast- Oatmeal w/ pumpkin, mini WW bagel with veggie cream cheese, nectarine, egg
Upped by another 50 cals today, hopefully if i keep upping by 50 everyday this week i will be up to 2200 by weekend. Been reading an intersting post today about how the body dosent go into hypermetabolism untill 3000+ calories. Then you eed to start adding on to gain or something. Should i be getting up to there then? Boy, am i confused. I made scones today too and a beaded pencil pot holder (all beadeds woven together and has taken me hours to finish :). All distractions to try and keep me busy.
Also have an appointment with T today. Not looking forward to it. I think my dad is going to stop my gym sessions all together however i have talked to my mum and we agreed to comprimise on the following:
1 x Body Balance exercise class (combines stuff like yoga, pilates and tai chi)
1x Dance exercise class
1 x Yoga moves exercise class
and maybe 1 x 45 minutes swimming session
All of this would be per week with a rest in between. I know the dance and swimming are a little more calorie burning than the yoga and stuff but i figure the other stuff will be good for toneing right?
Todays food:
Breakfast: Dorset cereals toasted spelt museli with natural yogurt, blue berries and strawberries
Snack: eat natural date and walnut bar, 200ml glass milk
Lunch: 2 slices whole wheat bread with 1 egg, 1 tbsp light mayo, sliced tomato and salad. Activa fruit layers yogurt
Snack:1 slice whole wheat toast with 1 tbsp peanut butter and a banana
Dinner: Quorn chilli and 1/2 cup brown rice
Snack: 250mls semi skimmed milk and sachet of options hot chocolate
Total: 2050

Yeah, today I woke up super early (for me anyway, it's like 9 am) So I can fit in more meals before work haha. Im shooting up to 2500 today. So far I've had 400 cals with breakfast sooo let's see how it goes from there. Good luck everynone
aussie- I get full easily, since I'm used to eating small portions. I eat like 6 meals a day, every like 2 hours. I do go out a lot sooo that interferes with my eating patterns, plus I work (just part time, i'm only a teen). but I tryyy to eat every chance I can and if I go by the kitchen I take handfuls of cereal and nuts. haha I'm like you too, if I drink water and coffee, I'll be full for a while....but sometimes you have to eat even without an appetite.
This place gets responses so fast! That is a good thing though...
Angel-Gaining on 2200? Not forever I suppose. Your body is going to eventually get used to that amount and learn to compensate with that and loose/maintain . I agree, you will probably have to raise the cals to at least 3000 :)
Butterfly-That is awesome that you are raising by 50 calories everyday. Slow and steady wins the race, right? That exercise does sound very fun, but make sure and eat the cals burned. If you volunteer to do that, it might make the gym-going a YES from your T.
Aquaev-Anyone that doesn't like B+J'S(unless they are vegan or anything) are CRAZY! That stuff is like to die for.
Fage Total thing-I honestly did not like it! It had no flavor to me! I tried putting honey, sugar, blueberries, etc. in it and ....nope, yucky to me! So disappointed that I did not like it though! You all make it sound so good!
Just got back from a my counseling app. It went fabulous! I do not think it could have gone any better. She is very proud of me and I do not have to go back until like the last week in September. And if I am still doing well then, I do not have to go back in at all! YAY!
psychoj- Tell me about it! This thread gets like three pages of responses a day! Eh, Fage is an acquired taste. During the worst of my ED I ate 2% and a fruit leather every day for lunch so I kind of got used to it. The kind with the fruit sauce attatched is the best though! The plain has really really amazing nutrition, which I why I eat it sometimes. The 2% kind has 17 g of protein, I don't know about Total. Glad your appt. went well.

Lunch- PB on WW potato bread, chocolate mousse yogurt, TLC bar, carrots
hi everyone! replying from bottom up! just a q 1st-ive been averaging 2000 give or take, today will be much more and im ok w that, but someone told me that to fix the metabolism after restriction you have to hit 3000cals, so i know for today that would be ok, but what if i continue that? you think too big of an overnight jump? thanks!

BUTTERFLY-your nutritionist has you increasing by only 50? hmm. yes, deff eat back cals burned at the gym, and then some, remember, excercise boosts the metabolism making you burn more even after youre done-so eat even more than burned! GL at the therapist!
CHARLIE-if i could, i would kick you in the butt! beleive me- you do not want to lose and have to fight the frickin fight again!!! i dont know about you, but not counting sounds great just not sure im ready bc my hunger/satiety cues are screwed-it might cause you to eat too little, maybe that could be a goal for later. good luck! and yes, post the yummy food you ate-i couldnt believe how delicious my lunch was yestersday-food is awesome guys!
AUSSIE-IT IS THE ed telling you not to eat, eventho im full, i eat, i preplan and eat preplanned meals at preplanned times. its not normal but in order to gain, i nee dto do that. also, sometimes once i start eating-even if its forced, ill get hungrier. deff mooooore than 1500 cals is needed! pb, nuts, just eat and youll be hungrier! eat whole eggs.

haha I love how I said I wasn't going to be able to write for awhile...Im back though...this place is highly addicting maybe more so than the actual calorie counting as I love hearing what you all have to say! lol.
Fage...hmm I know I see it in everyone's food logs, but I've never tried it. Is there only plain or strawberry or are there other flavors as well. Ive just been going for the yoplait. I know its horrible of me, but I love the new light flavors esp Apple turnover. Maybe I'll pick some up when I go to the grocery store later on.
Wow butterfly that still kinds of seems like a lot of exercise...super fun though!! Just make sure you eat back what you burn!

Double burger sounds so good! I'm thinking of finally splurging tonight and going for a chicken quesadilla from taco bell or a burger king veggie burger! I can't get past my hump of only eating about 1900 cals I need to increase I know, but it's so hard. Im never hungry and I barely exercise at all...feeling so lazy :(
