Weight Gainers: What did YOU eat today?
I am copying the many times copied thread, "What did you eat today?" in hopes of helping some of those who are just starting to gain and have no clue what to eat. I know that when I began weight recovery, I was eating tons of low-cal foods just because that's what I was used to. I learned the hard way that dense foods are essential to weight gain when you have high caloric requirements (at one point I needed 4500 cal to maintain my weight on BEDREST). Perhaps newbies can get some ideas if we post our weight gain meal plans! Even if you're not gaining anymore, grab an old one and post it!:]
Please note that every body is different and some will need more or less calories than others to gain. This thread is just so that you can get an idea of what you need.
Oh, and yes, I'm breaking the "no calories, no portions" rule, since it is pretty helpful in this case. If you want to post cals/portions you can. I just ask that you don't post if you're not eating enough, though as this is a weight gain thread, I would hope none of you are undereating.;]
I'll start....
Breakfast (875 cal)*
- 1/2 cup oatmeal (150) cooked with
- 1 cup evaporated whole milk (300)
- 1 mashed banana (100)
- 2 tbsp peanut butter (200)

- 1 hard-boiled egg (75 cal)
Morning Snack (300 cal)*

- 1/4 cup dried apricots (100)
Lunch (660 cal)*
- 1/4 cup rice cooked in 1 cup chicken stock (300) and
- 1/2 cup canned or cooked chickpeas (145) and

- 1 tbsp olive oil and curry powder to taste (120)
Afternoon snack (390 cal)*

ugh. i've been doing great two days ago and making it easily to 3000 cals coz i was out all day..but not i'm stuck home again, there are no but my safe-diet-low cals stuff!! so it's hard to make it to at least 2000+!!
hi everyone!
AQUA-i think i might try the flapjacks today, after having US pancakes for bfast!lol we all have those days, today is a new day, dont let it get you down!! the blackberry bar sounds good-how many cals? recipe? ooh, lol, and the opudding-yummm!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GIBBIT-NO OFFENSE TAKEN! I NEED KICKS IN THE BUTT, WE ALL DO NOW AND THEN. BAGEL SQUAREs-150 cals, i just feel like all i eat are carbs and if i get the normal ones-250cals from thomas, plus the other carby things i have, its a lot? i do get stuck w the same foods bc theyre easy and conveniant. im almost scared that when i am over the ED all ill do is eat out bc i hate to cook. youre doing so awesome, im so glad the party went super well-have fun at canoe practice!
PSYCHO-w the mini bagels, i just get concerned that if i get the 250 cal thomas bagel, then cereal for snack, then another sandwich, and another, its just a lot of carbs, no?
i want to try and have a challenge almost everyday, didnt get to yesterday bc i wanted to try and see what i was craving and to go w that, ofcourse i craved nothing bc my body is mute w this stuff! i need to have more tho, i think i need to eat out or something in order to increase the cals?

Wow. Sooo, uh, I've been really hungry today and also apparently clearing out the cupboards. And we haven't had a lot to play around with, so I have had to improvise a little. By "improvise" I mean "eat a lot of porridge". Cough, cough. I need to make up for the deficit I left myself yesterday, too, while having my freakout. -__- But, um:
Breakfast - Porridge with 7 dried apricots and a palmful of cashews, palmful of almonds (aiming to make up for my deficit yesterday, was about ~400 under Dx)
Lunch - 210g (drained) chickpeas with mixed vegetables and brown rice
Snack - ... more porridge with some prunes and cashews (used the last of both up!)
Snack 2 - (I was hungry!) A banana; the last of the (5 small) dates; the last of the soy yoghurt; the last of the soy milk warmed up with some cocoa powder in it (!? We need to go shopping)
Dinner - Tin of sardines (around four fillets a tin); steamed veg and brown rice
-- Planned --
Snack 3 - ... more porridge and apricots. Damn, I'm amazing, but we REALLY have nothing else to go for.
Snack 4 - Soy pudding. Yay.
GOOD LORD WHY AM I SO HUNGRY
Bit too much fruit. Eck. I eat so much fruit! Dx
so just got back from my therapy session at the ed recovery centre i go to, instead of havin 2 sessions a week, startin sept im only needing to have one :0 even though i haveent gained weight an am still at 86 lbs mentally im in the higher stages of recovery :) im so happy.!! ( ive been attending the centre for about 1 yr an a few months and my weight has been the same pretty much the whole time...they only focus on weight gain wen they feel u can mentallly handler it to avoid relapse...an theyve a really high success rate an ive met ppl whove compltetely recovered an they have no food/weight issues at all an are realy healthy so its gr8!!!!)
and on the weght side of things they nutritionist said slowly gianing is the best way...so it cud take 6-8 months or less or more. just gradual. and they dont give me an exact cal req or weight gain req each day/week to meet. i do have to make sure to have a fortisip drink every day (300 cals) and anothr 300 cal snack or drink inbetween lunch an breakfast and a bigger dinner and a snack b4 bed.
breakfast- cereal oats n more (300 cals)
snack-fortisip -300 cals
lunch- sandwhich with ham eggwhite an corn -300
snack-fortisip-300
dinner-chicken breast done on bbq and salad -250
snack-not sure yet....mayb pncake with small bitp/b an nutella yumm!!! - 150
total-around 1550
i also need to start eating some nuts throughout the day!!!
charliebo- welcome :) gr8 job on ur itake btw, keep it up
lalabanana-ha thats gr8 ur so hungry :) i fid it sooo much easier to eat when im hungry cause then i dont feel so abd about it. and the more i nibble through out the day the hungrier i am lol.
gibbit- sounds like u had a gr8 time at the party :) and thats awesome u were able to relax an enjoy some yummy food!!!
agruskin- oooh home made pancakes? i luv pnacakes but cant find a nice receipe, whats urs :)? it takes a while for the body to get used to getting food and listening to hunger signals after ed, like the hunger signals from the brain have been ignored for so long in starvation that they come back very slowly (according to my nutritionist anways)
xxxxx
edit- question for everyone
how much are u trying to gain/expected to gain each week or month?
Lala-We are having similar days. I seem to be extra hungry and we have like nothing to eat! I hope we are going to get groceries later! x-(
Agruskin-As long as you are eating balanced meals, I think that "a lot" of carbs is fine. If all you are eating is carbs then that is not good. But the peanut butter on the regular bagel would have fat, protein, and carbs. Try incorporating more protein into your meals maybe?
Relena-Doesn't it make you feel great? Glad it is working for you!
Charliebo-I love fruit too! I can do without veggies if I must, but fruits? Never. I am not trying to say that no fruits is okay, but just try and not have too much. That is awesome about the salmon! I actually had some last night too. :) Great work!
So far:
Breakfast:Egg and cheese between two slices of whole wheat toast, organic banana
Lunch: Vegetable Fried Rice(brown rice), whole grain scone, and glass of milk!
Feeling really good today. Saw my boyfriend again at church! How has you alls day been?
XXX
Heh, I think my body might be being intelligent in realising I ate under yesterday. I mean, people who listen to their bodies can undereat one day but eat more the next; I was talking to my mum and she was saying how she has those sorts of days. She's towards the end of her dieting now (dropped about 6 stone (84lbs!) with only a couple more lbs to lose and has gone from a UK 22-24 to a UK 10-12, stopped smoking, v. proud of her) but finds one day she'll only want a little, and the next she'll be hungry more than usual. She'd initially worry "oh, I've gone over today" - whereas I worry for going under, heh - but she was just instinctively zigzagging. Funny how our bodies work o_O And perhaps it's a good sign if I fell short of 4000 after steadier days and my body got hungry for it! Lol.
Relena- Hey, twin of mine! Lol. I'm really glad to see you eating more. :] I hope you're doing well today.
Lala- I was hungry yesterday too :D I actually woke up with hunger pains (for the first time EVER) in the middle of the night, and went and got some chicken... haha. >_> Also; you're up to 4000 now? Congrats. :] I'm glad to see things going well for you. Let's both keep it up, shall we?
So far today, I've had:
BREAKFAST (about 1200)
-Glass of freshly squeezed orange juice (130)
-1/2 cup quick oats(150) with 1 cup skim milk (90), 1 tbsp. flaxseed and some cinnamon (50), 1/4 cup almonds (225?) 2 tbsp. peanut butter(180) and 2 tbsp. pure maple syrup (120)
-1 cup skim milk(90), a medium banana (100); this was a smoothie.
-approx. 200g cantaloupe/honeydew melon (70) :]
LUNCH (almost 400)
-multigrain pita(200) with some lilydale chicken(160), and tomato & stuff (20)
..So that puts me at about 1600 so far. :]
hi everyone-
AUSSIE-congrats on your progress! i have no clue how much im trying to gain each wk, i dont see any doctors or anything and am doing this on my own. the pancakes were a box mix of buttermilk pancakes, just add water and cook. its really annoying about the hunger signs bc i never know what i want and ussually just have to eat according to preplanned times and meals.
LALA-yay! you posted your day! lol, i cant eat like any of the foods that you eat-oatmeal, bananas-so annoying! its ok to be hungry, it honestly doesnt look like that much food either. keep up the good work!
PSYCHO-you sound so happy, yay! so more protein, i have yogurts for lunch and dinner mostly, what else? cold cuts? cheese? i dont know how to emasure meat like from a whole peice, like a peice of chicken or something? bfast and lunch sound great!

1 cup of pancake mix worth of pancakes
Peanut Butter
Maple Syrup
... I'm just not that hungry today. I'll make sure I eat a good dinner though with a portion of meat and some veggies.
It's my last day house-sitting, so I don't want to make a huge mess that I'll have to clean up. Then I'm back HOME!! I almost like being home better than being on my own.
Aussie-When I was trying to gain, I was aiming for a pound or twp a week.(+500-1000)
Lala-That really is how normal people eat. Some days you are hungrier than others. It all balances each other out :]
Agruskin-Examples of protein would be steak, fish, cottage cheese, yogurt, greek yogurt, chicken. Try switching your regular cereal for one with more protein, like some of the kashi cereals. Do you like eggs? They are great. Beans as well. Hope I helped! (Try making a salad w/ beans, egg, some type of meat like steak or chicken, salad greens, avocado, etc!)
Alysha-Great job on breakfast especially!
I am making a grocery list so we can get some food! I also just exercised for like an hour w/ stretching, pilates, exercise ball, weights, etc. I am sore. Off to the grocery store soon. Anyone watching the Olympics?
xxx
Agru: Heh, I thought I'd go for it today, lol. I eat very similar things generally, but I move them about during the week. It doesn't look like much, I know, but I dish up larrrge bowls of porridge and have a fair few dense foods in there (around 5 medium sized dates, for example, is about 140-150 calories, though there were only the scraggly little ones at the bottom of the bag so that was probably only about 70 cals >:|) and I don't generally weigh/exact my portions - I remember back to when I WAS weighing, and recall the portion sizes on memory. I've tested myself a few times - I'm very good at estimating rice, apparently, lol! I was wondering, have you ever tried eating rice flakes? As in, porridge/oatmeal, but made with flakes of rice instead of oats?
Alysha: Yeah, 4k now '___' It's daunting - and a pain to reach some days! I finally gave in and went for nuts and denser foods because I was really having it hard without them. I've even compensated for my dent/deficit yesterday, which I'm proud of. When I had days like that early in recovery I'd just go "Eh, I'll get back on track tomorrow..." And we know how THAT can go. Haha.
Just wondering, but how much soy do you guys eat? I eat a lot of it as other alternatives like rice based desserts aren't so easy to find around here. But I've heard it has negative effects on health consumed often. x: Any opinions? It sounds a bit like hokey to me but I'm not sure.
hey everyone-
AIMEE-ha, i also had pancakes, 1st time in a long time!
PSYCHO-ive been having kashi vive actually, hardboiled eggs at bfast, when you have a slad w/ proteins in it, waht else do you have to round out the meal? thanks!
LALA-never heard of the rice flakes. regarding soy, i dont hae\ve an awful lot at all, but i wouldnt worry about it, altho i dont worry about any of that stuff other than the fact that like 95% of my diet is made of carbs.

Grrr.. i have had the most horrible day. The ed voice was just so loud. All i have pretty much done is cry. I was at the supermarket with my mum today, as we go to the check-in my mum asked me to go and get something, the lady on the till asked my mum if i was okay and told her that her daughter was a recovering anorexic. It was so weird and i felt so uncomfortable.
The voice is raging in my head, all i can hear is that this womens daughter did better than me, that somehow she 'beat' me and i failed. I am rready to scream. Why wont it just shut up. Why cant i just be normal!!?!
lala: The soy thing is linked with its oestregenic effect on the body which can both have positve and negative affects as soy contains isoflavones which mimic oestrogen and could therefore raise the risk of oestrogen sensitive breast cancer etc. but this isn't definite and isn't suspected to be a sole contributor i.e. there would already need to be high oestrogen levels in the body from say genetics, some contraceptive pills, raised stressed levels etc.
But soy also has a lot of benefits and the above is still being tested so
butterfly: I think most people in recovery get those days and have those moments, at least I definitely do. Ignore what others say; I'm sure the woman wasn't being malicious but most importantly try and ignore the vioce in your head, I know how hard this is because its likely to seem deafening and in some strange sense right but just remember that you are recovering and that in it self is an achievement - it'll get better!!
Agruskin-Salad wise, if you have a fat(such as olive oil dressing and avocado) and protein(all the others I suggested!) you might want to add a piece(or however many you want) of whole grain bread. Just have it along with it. All this talk about my salad is making me want one!
Butterfly-I am so sorry that you are not doing well. :[ I am sure the person at the till meant well. She was obviously trying to help b/c she must know the struggles and trials/tribulations of having an eating disorder. What exactly are you struggling with? Are you having trouble eating or is it more of just a bad "thought" day? *HUGS* You can do this. We are here for you! Oh, and you are not a failure! The ED wants you to think this. Do NOT give in. You are amazing xoxo
Hey everyone! I'm having a busy day but I'll try to reply to as many comments as possible...
agru- Tell me how the flapjacks are! The blackberry bar is 260 cals for 1/9th of the pan, but they are tiny and I could have easier eaten likfe half the pan! Think about the food you used to love the most before your ED and eat that. That would be a really good challenge.
aussiegirl- I'm glad your therapy is going so well! I'm expected to gain anywhere from .5 lbs to 2 lbs a week. Slow and steady win the race, I guess!
lala- Ooooo I love soy!!! I eat soy meat several times a week at least. Sometimes several times a day! And I love soy yogurt, but I rarely eat it b/c it's really expensive here. I don't think the thing about it being unhealthy is true.. I always heard that it was healthier than meat!
butterfly- Sorry you're having such a bad day. We all have days like this once in a while, and it's okay. The important thing is that we pick ourselves up tomorrow. But ask yourself why do you want to be a "better anorexic" than the other women's daughter. Did anorecia bring you anything positive?
Breakfast- Blackberry breakfast bar, oatmeal w/ pumpkin, egg, nectarine
Snack- Smarties at the movie theater
Lunch- Bagel with PB, Fage Total with strawberry sauce, TLC bar, carrots
Snack- Pudding, yogurt, carrots, berries
Dinner- Pizza veggie burger on wheat bun with provolone, corn on the cob, slice of Danish butter loaf with blueberries
Snack- Orange, berries, Kashi oatmeal, Ben and Jerry'
Hello! Wow, let's see if I can respond to everyone hehe, this is getting challenging!
butterfly- I'm sorry you're having a tough day! Prove to that ED that you are stronger than that! those thoughts do not want you to be happy or healthy, you've come so far and the ed is getting scared lol, keep beating it down! That woman's comment was pretty out of place but I'm sure she was just concerned. Don't let it get to you and if anything use it as motivation to get better so you don't get those reactions anymore.
lala- good job increasing to 4k!! We're weight gain twins! I eat tons of soy, I go through two large containers of soymilk a week, plus tofu and other meat alternatives. There's some controversy related to hormones, and I may be completely misinformed but if it is true i'm sort of hoping it helps me since I basically have no hormones of my own :x
aussie- I'm glad you're doing well! I def think you're ready to start slowly gaining and continuing working on the emotional side of things as well, they can go hand in hand. I'm doing this completely on my own, so I don't really have any weekly goals that I've set for myself, as long as I continue gaining I suppose I'm doing well.
agru- actually I think we probably need more carbs and they're good in recovery. they still really scare me though so I completely understand. Maybe try making some stirfry's with rice or different grains, veggies, meat. I do these a lot and it's really easy because it's a one pan meal, you can add a lot of oil, and whatever seasoning you like.
I had one of those really hungry days yesterday, even though I did absolutely nothing, and today when I feel like I should eat more I'm not too hungry. BUT I'm still having a really good eating day! Lunch was a little scary since it was at the river and white bread, but I did it and it was ok. Plus I shouldn't even care about that because canoeing was awesome and I met wonderful people and felt generally more at ease and happier than I have been in a long time :)
b- (I loaded up for the canoeing!) 3 egg omellete with spinach and onions on an ezekial english muffin, cup of wm yogurt with cereal and almonds, grapes.
l- WHITE pita bread and hummus, apple
s- luna bar
s- tea with soy and honey, handful of almonds, whole mango cut up in cereal, added in cocount flakes and tons of almonds, and used coconut milk instead of regular, it was wonderful tropical deliciousness!!
d- will be more of my curry stew and don't know the sides yet.
s- not sure yet, probably something involving oats and bananas, dried fruit and nut butters like usual!
hi everyone-
GIBBIT-youre doing so awesome, and the pics, gorgeous!! great job socializing, eating "scarey" foods, and having fun! what type of cereal do you like?
AQUA-so i didnt end up making the flpjacks, the thing w/ baking, or cooking anything w/ me, is that ill have it once, but not want it again fora really long time, so its pointless to make a whole big thing. and, i think its the ED that makes it really hard for me to remember what and how i ate pre-ed. its awful, but like, i dont crave anything and cant remember the foods i used to like. busy days are sometimes great, thanks for everything!
PSYCHO-thanks for the ideas!
BUTTERFLY-that woman was an idiot! who cares, keep up the great work!!!!

so i really need to eat more, and its a bit easier during the wk. some probs i have is that no one is cooking dinners, not like i like to, and making a whole big dish, like lasagna, takes so much time and i dont t hink id want it more than 1/wk. again ill ask, do you all cook your own meals or have a parent cooking? i know some families preplan their week's dinners, would someone be able to post a week's worth of dinners maybe? i asked my dad for advice and he said that most ppl just eat sandwiches and salads for dinner, maybe hes rt? not sure, thanks everyone!
psychoj - Grocery lists are always so hard for me! Tell me it gets easier! Haha, I can never think ahead to full meals. It's just "what has the lowest calories" or "I f#$%ing want sweets/baked goods and I want them NOW!!!". Never planned shopping. Oh, and I'm watching the Olympics right now! The Equestrian cross country phase of eventing is on online and I'm so happy to be able to watch it. Yay!
agruskin - Up until starting to recover I had been craving pancakes since January. I've had them 3 times this week and they are SO good!! :D haha
butterfly - I know what you mean about the competitiveness of the voice. As excited as I am to go home where I won't have to pay for my own food, I'm terrified of the ed voice that will likely scream at me. My sister has been struggling with eating problems for a long time and her extreme thinness is like an elephant in the corner that nobody is talking about. But it always makes me feel so competitive, especially since growing up I was always the skinny one and she was the thin and athletic one. Now it's kind of the other way around and it just screws with my head a lot. Blaah, stupid ed voice.
BUT at least we can acknowledge that it is irrational and something we shouldn't listen to, no matter how hard it is. Good luck!! xx
aqua - I know it's already been asked, but how do you make this blackberry bar? It does sound delicious!
gibbit - Canoeing sounds like so much fun! I haven't gone to the family cottage in a few years and so haven't been able to go out in the canoe. Not to mention that my cousin who used to love canoeing traded it in for kiteboarding and slutty girls. We used to go out on the water for hours, exploring all the little bays that you couldn't really get to by car. Too bad he got lame and sucky. Haha.
Anyways, for the rest of my food today:
kashi cereal with milk (250 cals)
a bowl of microwave pasta with pesto sauce (about 400 cals)
two small packages of candy (don't know)
a thick fruit/veggie leather bar (don't know, about 200 probably)
a fresh berry and custard parfait dessert thing (not a clue)
a maple pecan danish
iced tea (100ish)
warm tea with milk and honey (100ish)
So I definitely did not eat much healthy stuff today, but I also slept through a lot of the day and just haven't been feeling hungry until I had a huge candy craving. Guess I had what could be considered a binge, but if I don't think about it too much it won't raise the ed voice much, and it will help me to not want to binge too much in the future.
I consider any time when I just have the uncontrollable urge to eat a larger than normal amount of calorie dense, usually nutrient poor foods a binge. I'm actually not too bothered by the calories today, but am still really bothered by the frame of mind.
agruskin - I've been doing a combo of living at home and living away from home this month, then next month I'm away from home. I HATE cooking because of the mess it makes, but I'm making it a mini goal to cook at least once a week with enough for left over meat or main dish for one day. That way I'm guarenteed to have a somewhat real meal at least twice a week.
Some other things that kind of help me:
- not picking at stuff while I make it
- making 3 items so that there is variety on my plate
- sitting down to eat (even by myself) so that I can take time and enjoy it
My family hasn't had 'family dinners' for a while due to a lot of family problems, and now that there's been a divorce and everyone is just so busy, sit down family dinners are kind of few and far between. I really do miss them because they do help to normalize my feelings towards food
edit to add an example of family meals before the drama ;) haha:
Sunday: some kind of roast meat... a whole chicken, or a pork roast, or roast beef... usually there would be carrots and potatoes and/or other root veggies cooking with the meat, then a seasonal veggie would be getting boiled.
Monday: leftovers of meat from Sunday. If there was gravy left over, we'd have mashed potatoes (potato and gravy volcanoes!! It used to be the only way I'd eat potatoes), two types of boiled veggies usually (different colours... so beans and carrots, or spinach and beets) cooked in different pots because we didn't like mixed flavours.
Tuesday: Something frozen from a box like chicken fingers or fish sticks, and then french fries from a bag that were baked in the oven. Usually a boiled seasonal veggie (we had a huge vegetable garden, so would just eat whatever was ripe)
Wednesday: Macaroni and cheese! Usually baked and delicious. Sometimes had soup with it. More veggies.
Thursday: Chicken breasts, 2 or 3 seasonal veggies, rice
Friday: Spaghetti day! Had it with garlic bread. Don't remember if there were veggies or not.
Saturday: Either we went out or had some kind of 'special food', like ribs, meatloaf, hamburgers, or something else kid-friendly that was made from red meat.
Phew, barely remembered that, but that's the general gist of it.
