Weight Gainers: What did YOU eat today?
I am copying the many times copied thread, "What did you eat today?" in hopes of helping some of those who are just starting to gain and have no clue what to eat. I know that when I began weight recovery, I was eating tons of low-cal foods just because that's what I was used to. I learned the hard way that dense foods are essential to weight gain when you have high caloric requirements (at one point I needed 4500 cal to maintain my weight on BEDREST). Perhaps newbies can get some ideas if we post our weight gain meal plans! Even if you're not gaining anymore, grab an old one and post it!:]
Please note that every body is different and some will need more or less calories than others to gain. This thread is just so that you can get an idea of what you need.
Oh, and yes, I'm breaking the "no calories, no portions" rule, since it is pretty helpful in this case. If you want to post cals/portions you can. I just ask that you don't post if you're not eating enough, though as this is a weight gain thread, I would hope none of you are undereating.;]
I'll start....
Breakfast (875 cal)*
- 1/2 cup oatmeal (150) cooked with
- 1 cup evaporated whole milk (300)
- 1 mashed banana (100)
- 2 tbsp peanut butter (200)
- 1 tbsp ground flaxseed and cinnamon to taste (50)
- 1 hard-boiled egg (75 cal)
Morning Snack (300 cal)*
- 1/4 cup mixed nuts (200)
- 1/4 cup dried apricots (100)
Lunch (660 cal)*
- 1/4 cup rice cooked in 1 cup chicken stock (300) and
- 1/2 cup canned or cooked chickpeas (145) and
- 1/3 cup shredded cheese (150) and
- 1/4 cup each onion, peppers, and tomato (30) cooked with
- 1 tbsp olive oil and curry powder to taste (120)
Afternoon snack (390 cal)*
- 1 serving baby carrots (35)
- 1/4 cup hummus (155)
- 1/4 cup mixed nuts (200)
Dinner (875 cal)*
- 1 cup of my insane Mac & Cheese recipe (515)
- 2 cups tossed salad (45)
- 2 tbsp rasins (60)
- 2 tbsp sunflower seeds (105)
- 2 tbsp dressing (150)
Evening snack (480)*
- 1 cup plain whole milk yogurt (180)
- 1/2 cup homemade granola (300)
About 3600 calories :]

Blah after what happened two days ago I was determined to have a small bedtime snack and it was small-ish hah everything else is fairly easy to get down I just have to blend it. Because unfortunately im becoming really bloated =[
Agruskin-sorry I didn’t read your post but you asked me a long time ago what spirutein was. Spirutein is a non-dairy tri-protein powder that’s jam-packed with vitamins seriously it has like 100% daily total of everything im convinced that it always stops my hair from falling out when it begins to =]
Gibbet- I so totally stole your idea for using coconut milk =] it helps get my calories up and tastes so much better than water.
Lala- yay! We have the same calorie range! Go us! Hahaha
i hope everyone has an amazing day today. I hate it when that thoughts creep back in. I always have to remind myself to stay in the moment but sometimes I just turn into such a grouch to everyone =[

Angel-Thanks! I might actually try the popcorn thing tonight. Did you use the regular or butter, etc. flavors? I definitely used to measure EVERYTHING! Even turkey for lunch meat. I started slowly cutting back. It can be overwhelming to cut cold turkey. So I started by not measuring cereal in the morning. Then I just let go of the 100 cal-packs. Then slowly by slowly I was not measuring any more. I think the hardest one to overcome for me was peanut butter. But I actually just had a peanut butter sandwich and no measurement! You can do it! Just start slowly :]
Agruskin-Hmm, something other than food. What do you enjoy? Do you like zoos, museums, shopping? There of course is going to be some celebration and food, but like you said it does not need to be all focused on that. Maybe show them your new "healthy ways." Take them to a healthy restaurant but have some cake! Oh and I am just curious, what kind of cake are you making? >.< Pizza dough that I make is pretty easy. It takes like 15 minutes to put together then 1-1.5 hours for it to rise.(you just forget about it!) Then you roll it and put the toppings on :] You should try it...
I am so incredibly happy today. Sorry that I keep on saying that! But I feel so free. I am just not worrying about anything. Food is meant to nourish me, not stress me out!

agru- yeah today I'm just lounging around the house and not exercising :-). Like psychoj said, do something you really enjoy.I think for your birthday you should parttyyy it up! haha, and honestly, try doing your best not to think about food as someting scary that day. It's your birthday, have your favorite food, no matter what. I know it's hard, but you can do it; it's for your benefit!Have cake, treat yourself. Cheers for a long and healthy life :D
psychoj- I'm glad you're so happy!! hehe so am i.well I have that smart balance butter spray thing, and I spray it on my popcorn so that the cinnamon sticks :p. I also microwaved the fruit w/ syrup for 10 secs -so it'd be all warm and gooey- and mixed it all. yay. and with 6 cups of popcorn it goes a LONG way. I know it's not calorie dense, but I just love it. like 150 cals for the whole thing...I'm thinking of adding pb to that tonight? mm that'd def up my cals in a yummy way :D
today so far-
b- egg whites, nutirtional yeast, hummus, bean dip, carrots . English muffin, cottage cheese, cinnamon. Coffee w/ soy milk. oz of trail mix. (500 cals). YESSS I was hungry haha.
s- cheese crackerssss (60 cals)
s-mighty bites cereal (120)
l- seitan, like a million cups of spinach (ran outtt of my veggies! only thing left :p), nutritional yeast, lentils, olive oil, red wine vinegar, spices.. (250?)
s-greek yogurt, 2 baby bananas, almond breeze, bunch of ice, cinnamon, puffed millet (150)

psycho- yay!! I'm so happy you're having a good day! I've felt really good yesterday and so far today too. No measuring, no counting, LOTS of food and healthy exercise. I also love baking. I made french baguettes last week, and I've also made pizza dough, pies, and even pasta although that was really work intensive. Cakes and cookies sort of continuously spill out of my oven :)
meesh- you always have such awesome food! And the coconut milk is great, especially since I can't have milk, and it's cal content is up there with heavy cream. I put it in my oatmeal again last night, and I think I'm going to go make a protein shake with it after I post. I've tried spirutein, the only thing that bugged me was that it's green haha. I just finished off a vanilla designer whey, and now I'm trying one called Rainbow protein energizer made out of rice protein that also has spirulina and a bunch of other things, so I like that more than just straight protein. I'm also in the same calorie range, go team 4k!! Omgosh I was so bloated yesterday, I don't know what happened but I hope it's better today because I was really struggling to shove the food in last night.
agru- Happy early birthday! and have fun! psycho had some good ideas, museums, go to a movie, go bowling, swimming. And just choose your absolute favorite cake of all time and splurge, you totally deserve to enjoy it this year!
angel- I know what you mean, it's like all this knowledge is just engraved on our minds and we can't get rid of it now. I've mostly stopped counting and logging and I cut out the measuring a while back although I still give in once in a while iwth things like cereal just to see if I'm eating a regular portion or not, more out of curiosity but it's still bad. I also stumped 3 different nutritionists, I know too much hehe. Just start slowly, challenge yourself one day at a time and see how long you can go without doing these things and it will get easier as you go.
aqua- I made almond butter this morning! It's really easy, almonds in the blender and pour in some canola oil or whatever oil you have, and then I put in some honey for sweetness. good luck with the lab test today! I hate when they make me fast, I get really anxious and angry when I have to put off eating. I had to do it last week :\
peanut_butter- just keep eating healthy amounts of food, do not restrict! The last thing you want is to start over. That amount is pretty much impossible to gain in a week to so its probably water weight, or the time of day, plus all scales are different. I weigh 4 lbs more usually on the doctors scales than I do on my own.
aussie-congrats on your exams! And enjoy your pasta tonight. I can't eat the creamy ones anyways, but just think of all the good fiber and protein you'll get from the pasta, and if you get a tomato sauce that's a lot of good for you veggies, a ton of antioxidants from the cooked tomatos, and healthy fats from the olive oil. I love banana bread, and baking for yourself is the best!
butterfly- I know how you feel, I've been eating so much and I feel huge. We just have to keep doing it anyways. I don't know where you are in the UK, but when I was in london I saw a whole foods, they always have good homemade stuff in the bulk bins.
lala- keep pushing, I'm really afraid to weigh myself, and I'm struggling to keep myself from doing it. Just stay away from the scales! You know it's not real weight, your body is just clinging on to anything right now and most of it is probably water weight and will level out eventually. Focus on how much better you feel and how healthy and beautiful you want to be at your goal weight. These things are not measured in numbers on a scale!
I'm going to go make up for some calories since I just ran on the treadmill for 15 minutes! I had to alternate with walking, so my total time was 30. My cardiovascular health has really suffered during this recovery, but I will get it back!
gibbit- spirutein is green because it also has spirulina hah i love vanila chocolate peanut butter, and the banana flavors.i was insanely bloated yesterday too becaue i sort of "binged" the day before that well my snacks were high in volume and around 1000 calories so i didnt feel too good. hah
Oh. My. Gosh. COTTAGE CHEESE IS SUDDENLY THE BEST TASTING THING ON EARTH! What the hell? Hahaha. I used to HATE the stuff.. now I absolutely adore it. Has anyone else's taste buds changed since weight gain? I also used to love peanut butter and milk and now it's the sickest crap ever. Haha.
I'm trying to eat more protein and veggies since I pretty much live on carbs. It's hard! I'm so lazy.. even to just boil some veggies! Jeeze! =P
haha meesh -I just made my shake and this one is green too, I guess anything with spirulina is going to be green, oh well, it's healthy! Yeah, I've sort of been bingeing as far as the amount of food I've been eating, but it's been more concious, so I don't really consider it a binge like the one I had a few night ago where I just panicked. I think PB also bloats me but I like it too much and it's too high cal to cut down on.
haha, you guys have me all wrong--im eating on my bday- probly like 400000000 cals, i dunno, i just dont want it to be the only thing im doing. ive come to sort of acceot that food and celebrations go hand in hand, like PB+J, just wish the focus wasnt on food. im totally having my father's pancakes for bfast(w other stuff), then maybe going out 4 coffee w a friend, then im thinking lunch at home, but then out to eat and ice cream or cake or dont know yet for dessert. its still tough bc i really dont remember what foods i liked pre-ed, like, at all. so its not like thiers something ive been thinking of but avoiding, i really dont know! i do like seafood, ive seen "zuppa di pesce" before but dont know what it is? i love seafood just plain steamed, its like the best thing to me, so if anyone has any other suggestions or comments on that? ill be 255555555555 or a million it seems! lol

gibbit-i hear you! i cant really have dairy either because it bloats me to death and being brought up since childhood as a ovo-vegetarian and lately eating dairy and on occasion even meat i feel really sick.but both my mother and father really want me to eat "normally" now so they stopped being vegetarians themselves and turned into carnivores, and asked me to try at least to be "normal " like them so on occasion i do eat thier chicken for dinner but it doesnt really tickle my fancy =]other than that dairy taste so sooo good but its soo soo bad hah i just need to make sure i take a lactaid besides i love ice cream and yogurt and cottage cheese so i go for it. i want to make sure i rebuild my body with all the nutrients and vitamins i can.im trying to make sure i eat a varied diet but it feels weird. i tend to be a healthy eater so the foods i have to eat usually have to be in high volumes or i just have to use my blender to make it go down easier(my blender has become my new best friend in gaining weight lol =] )

angel its great having more energy isnt it! ive had so much more even upping my cals by a few hundred, i ran the furthest ive ever run the other day and it felt great (ate it all back of course!)
butterfly granola in the uk, jordans do some different ones which are good, and theres a brand called morningstars! oh and dorset cereals do one which is probably the tastiest, although eat naturals one is pretty good too.....as you can see i like granola

ANGEL-you should be a chef, lol. i would do popcorm w/ PB+choc chips, or M+Ms. so you mix together the yogurt+milk, freeze for how long??

gibbit- Thanks! I found a recipe online and was planning to do that! Arg, I get so cranky when I can't eat! We had to sit in the waiting room for a while and my mom was flipping through Cooking Light magazine, pointing out things to me that looked really good. Then she asked if I was hungry and I went "RAWRRRRR OF COURSE I'M HUNGRY! My eating has been delayed by an hour!" It's to make sure my estrogen levels are going back up though, because they were practically non-existent a few months ago. My GW could possibly get lowered if it's in a healthy range.
agru- I believe that zuppa di pesce is fish soup. You could try having a shopping trip maybe? Or going to a park and having a picnic, but bring along some outdoor games and stuff.
wistful- Yeah, my taste has changed a bit too. I'm the oposite though, I used to hate milk, now I love it! Also I can't stand "light" anything anymore. Do you eat eggs, btw? That would be an easy way to add protein, and you can make them in the microwave.
Lunch- Grilled cheese on WW potato bread, Rachel's exotic yogurt, Kashi veggie crackers, carrots
Snack- Other half of apple from AM snack, raisins, carrots, popcorn, WM yogurt w/ honey

Wow, this thread certainly keeps going! Bumps everyone for doing so well! I just got back from my stay in Italy - had to find accom for my penultimate year seeing as the bloody american lady i rented from last year wants her flat back - boo! stuffed myself on fresh figs and penne alla cinghiale yum yum yum! Bit of a shock to get back and find that after 35 degrees, it's like 14 here! How's everyone else's holidays going?
Here's what I ate today:
Breakfast: Toast and Marmite (200 odd)
Lunch: polenta with ragu (400)
Dinner: Jacket potato, vegetable chili and a glass of red wine (500)
Snack: Rice pudding (230)
Missed a few snacks today as got a bit busy taking down the shed in the garden - hitting thing randomly with a sledge hammer is GOOD stress relief! - so will probably just retire to bed with a film and a pot of ben and jerrys!

P.S. I read a few pages ago about how much fun it would be if we all met up and got the BEST mental scenario if we all tried to go out for a meal and it made me laugh for about half an hour!lol!

I feel like I've eaten a TON today- and I've been eating more than 2500 for the past two days, just because I've been hungry... geehhh... I guess that's a good thing though? :D
Scale is up a bunch of pounds too. Need to get rid of that damn thing. x-x
Breakfast: 1/2 cup oats with a cup of soymilk, 1/2 cup raisins, 1 tbsp. honey, 2 tbsp. PB, some apple butter
Snack: 1/2 cup trailmix/granola with 1/2 cup yogurt and a couple tbsp. apple butter mixed in, mmmm..
Snack2: a shake with about a cup and a half of soymilk, and a scoop of whey
Lunch: 2 slices wholegrain bread, 2 slices of tomato, a piece of lettuce, 1 tbsp. miracle whip, about 100g deli turkey slices, salt & pepper... and well as a medium banana with some pb on it.

hey so today has been an amazing day no seriously well earlier today i was really bloated and it hurt so i decided to walk a few blocks down to the animal shelter to get my mind off things and when i was leaving the place this Lady was dropping off kittens but the shelter had ran out of cages SO THEY WERE GOING TO EUTHANIZE THE KITTENS!!! NOOO!!! i couldn't let that happen. so five minutes, 10 cans of food and two kittens later i left the shelter feeling quite satisfied. ive bottle fed and raised many kittens before. i just hate how some get euthanized if they don't make a certain age/weight criteria for the shelter to accept them
hmm, so, is fish soup any good? mmm, today is delcious so far!

Thanks Agru- I really don't want to go much higher than 100lbs, even though I know I'll probably have to D:... but I guess, yeah, I should only weigh myself once a week. Also; I'm not exercising a lot, no. I'm only lifting weights (very light, 5-15lbs at a time) a few times a week. That's it. I haven't even gone for a walk this week, either! Hahaha..
And Meesh, I agree with agru, that's really, really awesome. :) I'm so proud of you! Hehee.
Agru: While I know I'm meant to be gaining, I can't understand why it's happening so fast. I mean, it's not possible for me to be gaining a lb a day realistically without some of it being water, but even now that weight is just... not coming off. |:
Can anyone reccommend an average calorie snack, ideally savoury and a protein, not nuts, not soybeans, not dairy? Rofl. I eat the first two plenty already and the third is a given. Heh. I'd keep eating the soybeans but I think I eat too much soy (beans, yoghurt, milk, puddings and tofu!), and would like to cut down... |:
meesh- I really need to try that lactaid stuff, does it work? I usually enjoy my ice cream or whatever it is and then deal with the effects after. So did you take the kittens home?? That's so great that you get out and volunteer! I've volunteered at our humane society a few times and really should go back more often but I made sure they did not euthanize before I started because that's terrible and I don't want to work at a shelter that does that.
theoforunay- welcome back! I'm so jealous, I bet the eating was good in italy! haha I like that image of all of us eating together, it would actually be really nice to know that everyone I was with was probably having the same anxieties I was and that we could all push through them together. I guess that's what group therapy or support groups are for but I haven't found one here.
aqua- I love potato bread, where do you get whole wheat? I have no estrogen too! That's what my blood test last week was for, because I have low thyroid and almost no hormones and last week they found that I have higher than normal testosterone? I don't know what that means because my doctor doesn't like to call me back.
so far today:
b- optimum rebound cereal with sliced banana, goji berries, almonds, and wm kefir yogurt and soymilk. peach.
s- protein shake made with scoop protein powder and v8 berry juice
l- more berry juice, spinach and seaweed salad with pickled carrots and sprouts, omellete with soy cheese wrapped in tortilla
I'm so bloated again, what's going on with my stomach??!!
