Weight Gainers: What did YOU eat today?
I am copying the many times copied thread, "What did you eat today?" in hopes of helping some of those who are just starting to gain and have no clue what to eat. I know that when I began weight recovery, I was eating tons of low-cal foods just because that's what I was used to. I learned the hard way that dense foods are essential to weight gain when you have high caloric requirements (at one point I needed 4500 cal to maintain my weight on BEDREST). Perhaps newbies can get some ideas if we post our weight gain meal plans! Even if you're not gaining anymore, grab an old one and post it!:]
Please note that every body is different and some will need more or less calories than others to gain. This thread is just so that you can get an idea of what you need.
Oh, and yes, I'm breaking the "no calories, no portions" rule, since it is pretty helpful in this case. If you want to post cals/portions you can. I just ask that you don't post if you're not eating enough, though as this is a weight gain thread, I would hope none of you are undereating.;]
I'll start....
Breakfast (875 cal)*
- 1/2 cup oatmeal (150) cooked with
- 1 cup evaporated whole milk (300)
- 1 mashed banana (100)
- 2 tbsp peanut butter (200)
- 1 tbsp ground flaxseed and cinnamon to taste (50)
- 1 hard-boiled egg (75 cal)
Morning Snack (300 cal)*
- 1/4 cup mixed nuts (200)
- 1/4 cup dried apricots (100)
Lunch (660 cal)*
- 1/4 cup rice cooked in 1 cup chicken stock (300) and
- 1/2 cup canned or cooked chickpeas (145) and
- 1/3 cup shredded cheese (150) and
- 1/4 cup each onion, peppers, and tomato (30) cooked with
- 1 tbsp olive oil and curry powder to taste (120)
Afternoon snack (390 cal)*
- 1 serving baby carrots (35)
- 1/4 cup hummus (155)
- 1/4 cup mixed nuts (200)
Dinner (875 cal)*
- 1 cup of my insane Mac & Cheese recipe (515)
- 2 cups tossed salad (45)
- 2 tbsp rasins (60)
- 2 tbsp sunflower seeds (105)
- 2 tbsp dressing (150)
Evening snack (480)*

Agru: While I know I'm meant to be gaining, I can't understand why it's happening so fast. I mean, it's not possible for me to be gaining a lb a day realistically without some of it being water, but even now that weight is just... not coming off. |:
Can anyone reccommend an average calorie snack, ideally savoury and a protein, not nuts, not soybeans, not dairy? Rofl. I eat the first two plenty already and the third is a given. Heh. I'd keep eating the soybeans but I think I eat too much soy (beans, yoghurt, milk, puddings and tofu!), and would like to cut down... |:
lala really dont weigh yourself for 2 and a half to three weeks or soo till some water weight resides and you see a true gain.
about the snacks you can do 1/2 cup tuna salad with 5 crackers which totals around 440 calories and down in with a cup of mango juice blended with a medium banana about 200 calories that should give you about a solid 650 small protein easy on the stomach snack
or 2 oz avocado about 90 calories 2 servings pita chips about 280 calories (and the servings are small! and beef jerky about 120 calories with a mango banana smoothie which is about 200 calories and that gives you another 600 calories.
both those snacks have meat in them i dont know if your a vegetarian or not
Today....
B: Bran flakes with prunes on top, 1 kid's innocent smoothie (250)
S: Ensure plus banana flavour (330)
L: Vegetable crispbake with sliced tomato ( and ketchup!), Activia ff yoghurt (250)
S1: 30g all bran with mini snack pack sunmaid raisins (130)
S2: Ensure plus raspberry flavour (330)
D: bulgur wheat and veg stuffed red pepper with side of steamed swiss chard, Pink Lady apple (300)
S: Options hot chocolate and homemade oatmeal-raisin cookie (300)
Total= 1910
I'm utterly terrified, tomorrow I get my A level results- I need to get 3 As to get into my university of choice! Or else my life is over. Eek! (P.S congrats Aussie on getting in to college!)
hi everyone-
so much for being flexable and all...i bought fishsticks and french fries w the idea that id have them together, so my mom took out the fishsticks, made the whole box, and decided to cut up 2 potatoes and fry them bc thats fresh as opposed to the french fries which could stay frozen. well i dont want the fried "homefries" bc yes, she uses tonsssssssss of oil, ugh, im pissed she did that and pissed that im so messed up. i am so rigid and i can never decide on what to food to have! i dunno what to do..
GIBBIT-aqua, as do i, use Martin's whole wheat potato bread, at the supermarket.
HEADINGUP-good luck! dinner sounds great!
Wed-
bagel, PB, apple, cheese ~400
cereal, milk, trail mix~ 220
cheese sandwich, fage yogurt w/ attached peach sauce, keebler pretzels+cheese snack pack, plum, some cut up veggies ~ 440
fage, trail mix, apricot ~160 (in a bad mood)
Headingup-I am sure you will do great! Do not worry although I can totally understand why you are! I am positive everything happens for a purpose.
Gibbit-Sorry to hear about your bloating. It will go away though. I love water when that happens/happened. What is that cereal you had for breakfast? It sounds delicious but I have never heard of it! And also, go cooking and baking! I got "Bob's Red Mill Baking Book." (Specializes in whole grain baking with over 400+ recipes like pies all the way to scones!) The zucchini recipe is my specialty now.
Angel-That sounds amazing! I cannot wait to try it :D
Agruskin-Whoops, I think I just meant "what are you doing for your totally splurge of all time dessert?" Be it cake or what-not! Have what you want and do not worry. Cake, cookies, etc. are fine as long as they are the ONLY things you eat :] (like everyday)
Meesh-That is awful! But great that you now have a few new pets :] It is a cruel world sometimes...
Had an awesome day today. Went to the gym and biked and elliptical-ed(lol) along with weight machines. Along with that I have done loads of PT exercises at home, so needless to say, I need to eat! I want the stinking foam roller that I ordered to get here though >.<
Today:
Breakfast-Heart to Heart (original Kashi) w/ skim milk, 1/2 banana
Lunch-PB sandwich on whole wheat bread, blueberries, and pretzels
Snacks-Organic apple, string cheese(NOT low fat :] )
Dinner-Pork shop w/ cooked cinnamon apples, buttered noodles, and a glass of milk
ha- no longer an issue since we are the fat family and my parents ate the entire box of fishticks!
now i just dont know what to have and am craving nothing.
gibbit- I had/have really high testosterone too.. I'm not sure what it means either. My doctors like to keep me in the dark about everything that happens to my body :\ I just get WW potato bread at my regular supermarket, which is called Giant. It's made by Martins and is the best thing ever!
headingup- Good luck with college!
theoforunay- Oh, I went to Italy last month! Mmmm there was some good eating there! Did you have much gelato? It would be so cool if we all went out for dinner.. I think it would be easier to eat if everyone was having the same difficulty w/ eating out.
Sorry for not answering everyones' questions but I'm feeling like crap now. According to my therapist I am still "pretty emaciated" looking. Apparently gaining 20 lbs isn't enough for them, and I have a long way to go. What utter nonsense. They haven't even looked at my medical records to see what an ideal weight for me is.
agru- if you freeze yogurt, it can't be longer than an hour or it'll basically turn into ice. that's why i do it for an hour, tastes creamy like ice cream :D I just add the soy milk for more nutrition content, calories, and ice creamy flavor. With the milk added it takes longer to freeze (the more liquid the longer). for one cup of yogurt, 1/4 cup of milk. you don't want to make it runny. anddd add all the ice you want!
oh and i'm sorry about the whole fish sticks and fries thing :-\ but ya know, it wasn't necessarily healthy so you don't have to feel too bad about not wanting to eat it..
lalabanana- I don't know if you're vegetarian, but at my local health store I get seitan. It's a vegetarian wheat "meat"; tastes similar to chicken and has the texture too. It's amazing with barbecue, ketchup, or you know, your regular meat dishes. I buy it from westsoy, but you can also make it yourself with wheat gluten. I'm just too lazy.If you can't find at the store, look up the recipe on google or even CC. It's got 18 grams of protein per 90 cals :D. Besides that, any kind of beans have a lot of protein, not necessarily soybeans? Like lentils, kidney beans, pintos, garbanzos...
charlieuk-yeah, it is great to have energy! Congrats on that run! keep it up :)
aqua- I don't know your weight stats, but if you're already at a healthy weight range, then just listen to your body. I mean if you don't need to gain anymore, then don't think you should unless you want to. I mean I'm 5'3 and my doctor said i should go up to 120!? But heck, I was always 110 to begin with; I'm not willing to go higher than my normal weight (I'm actually shooting for 105-107), else I would not feel comfortable and might have a chance of relapse...So it's the weight you most feeel comfortable at; not always what those people think (sorry, by now I hate doctors/therapists/etc so i might be biased :p).
anyway, here's me for the rest of the day..
d- lentils, veggies, pita, veggie pepper jack cheese, marinara, pita--- kind of like a pizza :D (300)
oatmeal w/ pb, cinnamon, blackberries (220)
s- slice of whole wheat bread, handfuls of crackers & trail mix (kind of like an "OMG i just got home and i'm hungry for anything" moment) (150?)
s- cottage cheese, syrup, lime juice, lemon juice, blackberries, blueberries--all in the mic for 20 secs. then added puffed millet and corn cereal and mixed :D yummo. I love food. (235)
So, if my calculations are correct, i'm at 2000. crap i need at least 200 cals before bed and i'm full..
ugh..so full, stomach hurts so much, maybe backed up, dont know...
AQUA-sorry youre down, i dont know youre stats but i hope it works out well.
Wed-
bagel, PB, apple, cheese ~400
cereal, milk, trail mix~ 220
cheese sandwich, fage yogurt w/ attached peach sauce, keebler pretzels+cheese snack pack, plum, some cut up veggies ~ 440
fage, trail mix, apricot ~160 (in a bad mood)
tspn PB, very little salad, 1cup kashi vive, ~1/4 cup kashi walnut+dried currant cereal, 2/3cmilk, 1 1/2tbspn trail mix, plum ~400
apple, yogurt, 1/2 100 grand bar ~350 2000+
Breakfast-Heart to Heart (original Kashi) w/ skim milk, 1/2 banana
Lunch-PB sandwich on whole wheat bread, blueberries, and pretzels
Snacks-Organic apple, string cheese(NOT low fat :] )
Dinner-Pork shop w/ cooked cinnamon apples, buttered noodles, and a glass of milk
Snacks:(up late and I was hungry!) blueberries, mango cut up, pear, and (finally something other than fruit!), popcorn w/ cinnamon, dark chocolate, and some dried cranberries!(not high cal or anything, but still yummy!)
Angel-You have opened me to a whole new world where popcorn concoctions are the BOMB! Thanks so much :] Cannot wait to try another recipe...
psychoj- I know, isn't popcorn amazing! and whole grain too, haha :D. Did you melt the dark chocolate and then drizzle it on? Sounds tempting. Man I wish I could go pop some now and try it. haha. Dad's asleep, can't make noise. But seriously, try drizzling maple syrup on it (or sugar free- dunno if you're sugar conscious like me..) next time. Maybe syrup + chocolate + cinnamon :-O. Or even chocolate + peanut butter to make it...amazing?! Wowwww I have the urge to go in my kitchen now, I have to try these both! :-(
Sorry, just have to log the food before I catch up because I feel like I ate way too much and need to reassure myself that I'm alright.
breakfast - 1.5 packages oatmeal with grated apple added, about 1/3-1/2 cup of granola, handful of froot loops
lunch+snack - a banana, about 1/3 cup of froot loops, 4 arrowroot cookies, 2 garlic sticks, 1 big shortbread cookie with smarties, a bottle of iced tea
after work - bowl of froot loops (my sister bought them and they are delicious, ok! haha), a few saltine crackers, yogurt, some candies, m&ms
supper - 1 chicken breast, some green beans, about 5 cheddar cheese cubes, 3 mini chocolate bars, 2 chocolate dipped strawberries and a piece of chocolate dipped banana
more snack - english muffin with butter and a bit of peanut butter, 2 bagel bites
... I feel like that is a gargantuan amount of food. *grits teeth*
I'll answer these in backwards order:
aimee- you are awesome! it's not a large amount of food by any means and you're not gargantuan, but I know how some days can make you feel really huge. I know I've been really bloated today and any little thing makes me feel stuffed/ huge.
angel- you put together strange combos like me :) I don't really like popcorn though, I think because I used to always choke on it when I was younger lol, but I don't feel like it's something I need to try now because it's really low cal. I had sushi for dinner and I don't feel like that was substantial enough, but I've been super bloated so I came home and had all the calorie dense things I had, and I'm snacking on almonds by the handful right now. Go for nuts and dried fruit!
I was planning on eating something really really plain like pasta that could maybe be easier on my stomach but my friend called and invited me to sushi. My stomach was screaming NOOO! and I was really tempted to turn it down, but I realized I really did want to hang out with her, and really, if I'm going to not go out anytime my stomach hurts or gets bloated, I might as well lock myself in my apartment and never leave. Normal people still go out when they don't feel their best and they eat food they don't really want because the good company is more important anyways. So I went and it was fine, not the best place but I had
d- edamame, veggie rolls, avocado rolls, and some skewered way too oily mushrooms. then I went to a bar for a while (go me!!)
s- came home feeling like I needed to make up more calories because I don't think sushi has very much but my stomach is still icky so I had dried figs, hot chocolate, toast with margarine and honey, lots and lots of almonds. Calorie dense food is my best friend :)
Meesh: Okay. >< I didn't do it this morning, woo. Baby steps. And avocado is a good idea. Forgot about that
Headingup: I'm not going to get my results today. If I change my mind I'll collect them tomorrow. I was ill and/or having panic attacks in all my exams. I want to focus on what's ahead, not how badly I did, so I don't want to see them. I have a reinduction tomorrow so that's what I'm looking forward to. And I'm not a veggie, just a largely red-meat free diet. :] It upsets my stomach.
Aussie: Heh, I eat lots of beans! xD Don't want too much fibre though.
mornin everyone :)
ok wow lots to reply to lol an loads to read.. oh an last nite i got pasta at the restaurant :) i got a kids serving from the child menu cause the place does super huge portions an if i had ordered a big adults size i prob wudda freaked at seeing the huge amt of pasta an not wanted it so.

angeleyes137- i know excersise really makes u feel so energized an happy....like i went for a power walk the other day an came back an hour later bouncing with energy an so happy...gotta love those endorphins lol :) an exactly...this year is a new start...hopefully the new start to the college i wanna get into lol. i did well in my exams i found out yest so now just gotta wait tillmonday to hear about college offers....i hate all this waiting lol. oh an with the measuring thing i never got super obsessed with all that cause our scales is sometimes a bit off in the kitchen so for me i jus have always estimated.
agruskin- jus try enjoy ur bday the best u can an dont worry about the food ...jus eat what u enjoy cause everyone else will be eatin lotsa party food too!! u deserve a nice bday :) an no one is gonna be like omg the party girl is eatin too much so. ppl will prob be happy ur enjoyin urself!! i know what u mean about food an celebrations though...like last nite we all went out for dinner cause i got good exam results...its like food=celebration i guess? oh an on the rigid thing im the same...i hate being rigid but its jus how i am now.

xxxxx
Thank you all for the good lucks- I got all As and so my place at university is confirmed! Yippee! I wish I was going this October but I know it was the right decision to wait a year until I feel truly recovered, confident and ready for all the challenges that lie ahead.
What is this potato bread stuff which has been talked about? sounds good- does anyone know if it's available in the UK or else can anyone provide a recipe?
Angel: I'm definitely copying that homemade frozen yoghurt thing! Delish! (Maybe i'll swirl a little honey into greek yog and freeze like that.)
Psychoj: I'm soooo jealous of you going to the gym, i miss the elliptical! I can't wait to get back there again and start cross-country again too.
Lala: Don't worry about your results- def live in the present and look to the future rather than dwelling on the past.
Also a savoury snack I like is homemade beetroot crisps. I'm a little scared by the ones you buy which are fried so I slice beetroot into think slices, brush with olive oil and bake in the oven at a low temp (like 100C) for about 30mins and then turn over brush other side and then bake another 30mins. If you like sprinkle with a little salt. ( If you don't like beetroot you could try with parsnips, carrots or just potatoes) If you want protein as well serve with some kind of bean/ yoghurt dip.
Aussie: Good on you for getting the pasta, we have to learn to listen to ourselves not that damn ed.
Hope everyone's having a good day
Just a quick q:
Does anyone have any experience with "Domperidone" medication? It's supposed to help with delayed gastric emptying, i.e the severe bloating and discomfort experienced after eating because it speeds up the movement of food from the stomach through the system. I'm rather a medication phobe so only want to consider trying it if there's any proof it's any use.
Headingup: Congratulations. :] My dad forced me to get my results. Lol. Not as bad as expected, but bad. D, D, U. Pass, pass, fail. I'm not going to Uni, but I'm still disappointed. Worse? One of the D's was two marks off of a C. Goddamnit.
I have an urge to comfort eat. Bad bad bad bad.
headingup: Wow! Congratulations on your grades. I think you are wise to postpone the university for a year. You will get a lot more out of the experience when you are healthy and present.
aussie: Congratulations on your grade results! In an even healthier state just think of all you'll be able to accomplish.
meesh: What names did you give the kittens? One year for my birthday I went to the humane society and rescued a little guy. He was the best cat ever! I named him Mackenzie and he lived for seventeen years!
psychoj: Your food always sounds so delicious! Yum! I want to try those Kashi sandwiches but they are not yet available in any of the local grocery stores (which makes no sense to me seeing as the Kashi Company headquarters are just a few miles from where I live...) It is terrific to hear you are having a day free of ED Hope it's the first in a long string of days like that. Ezekiel bread is nothing special. It is flourless (I don't have a hang up about flour) and made from a lot of different sprouted grains and legumes so it has a fairly high protein content. It tastes kind of nutty and chewy. My favorite varieties are the cinnamon raisin and no sodium. On the down side, it is on the lower calorie side (80). It is a "safe" food for me and one I may need to switch for something more challenging.
Yesterday (not hungry but kept pushing it anyway):
breakfast: 1/4 cup Kashi Go Lean, 3/4 cup shredded wheat n' bran cereal w/ 1/2 scoop whey protein powder, 1 cup nonfat milk, 2 tbsp. almonds and pistachioes, loads of blueberries

orange
snack: banana
lunch: roasted veggie and 1/4 cup pea puree w/ 2 tsp. olive oil
2/3 cup brown rice
salad w/ 4 oz. turkey tenderloin, eggplant hummus, sunflower seeds
bit of oj
snack: LARGE smoothie (oj, 1 scoop protein powder, plain nf soymilk)
1 sheet ww matzo cracker w/ 1 heaping tbsp. peanut butter
plum
dinner: tuna melt (tuna, tomato garlic soy feta, tomatoes, spinach on 2 slices toasted Ezekiel bread)
mushrooms. broccoli, broccolini, peppers, sunflower seeds in lemony hummus sauce
1/2 glass oj
snack: 1 heaping cup nonfat yogurt w/ 2 cups mixed berries
warm nonfat soymilk w/ cinnamon
watermelon
angel- I'm 5'7" and 114-115-ish lbs. Pre-ED I was like 110, and the same height. My doctors think I should be in the 120's, closer to 130 though! It kind of seems to me that they're just guessing where my weight should be, rather than looking at my records or talking to my parents about what I was before or whatever. I feel like if they keep pushing me way past the weight I'm supposed to be, I'm going to feel so uncomfortable that I'm going to relapse. I tell them this, and it's like they don't even here me! But thanks for the input.
aussiegirl- Good job getting pasta last night! Portion sizes now are ridiculous, aren't they? Ordering from the kids menu is smart, I probably would have freaked out too if I got a huge plate of pasta and wouldn't eat any of it. I would love to just ignore my therapist! But I have a whole team of doctors, which is really good, so if I quit my therapist I kind of have to quit seeing all my doctors :\
headingup- Potato bread is quite possibly the best thing ever invented. It's bread where potato replaces a lot of the flour, obviously. I just buy mine packaged, but if you are ambitious enough to make your own this recipe would be good if you have a bread machine: http://www.recipezaar.com/142068
and if you don't, this would be good:http://www.recipezaar.com/11113
charliebo- Great job pushing yourself to eat! I often feel like that but if we only ate when we were hungry, we wouldn't get anywhere, would we? I noticed you use non-fat food. If you switched to full fat everything, that would be a great way to add cals without feeling too stuffed.
Breakfast- Oatmeal w/ pumpkin and blueberries, Reeses puffs cereal w/ whole milk (Ick. Challenge for therapy), egg, red plum
Snack- No idea yet
Can I ask what broccolini is? Haha. I've seen it a couple of times now in menus and first time I saw it I thought it was a spelling mistake! I love broccoli, though. :D
Aqua: Huh. 120 would be an okay weight for you at your height but 130 does sound a little high beyond that. My GP has me shooting for 155-160! x_x Crazy, as I always stuck around 145ish pre-ED and pre-counting, but I'm also pretty tall and want to be comfortably in my healthy range so if anything does come off afterwards (have heard it's fairly easy for weight to come off in some recoverers because of the reduce in intake all of a sudden >__<), I'll still be in that range.
Aussie: Eee! I order from the kids menu too sometimes! Haha. But that's because I don't understand crazy portions. Either that, or I have two starters, or ask for half to be boxed/bagged. My parents are also good in that, if I do end up with a HUGE plateful they don't make me force food down beyond fullness. Obviously, when the portion is smaller they get me to eat it, but times such as going to Wagamama (japanese yay) where you get huge huge plates of noodles I don't have to scarf it all! Heh. Eating beyond fullness would be what would make my ED roar louder, compared to just the thought of eating out. x:
... I really need to stop slacking on my weights. LOL. I always have no motivation to lift! Dx
