Weight Gainers: What did YOU eat today?
I am copying the many times copied thread, "What did you eat today?" in hopes of helping some of those who are just starting to gain and have no clue what to eat. I know that when I began weight recovery, I was eating tons of low-cal foods just because that's what I was used to. I learned the hard way that dense foods are essential to weight gain when you have high caloric requirements (at one point I needed 4500 cal to maintain my weight on BEDREST). Perhaps newbies can get some ideas if we post our weight gain meal plans! Even if you're not gaining anymore, grab an old one and post it!:]
Please note that every body is different and some will need more or less calories than others to gain. This thread is just so that you can get an idea of what you need.
Oh, and yes, I'm breaking the "no calories, no portions" rule, since it is pretty helpful in this case. If you want to post cals/portions you can. I just ask that you don't post if you're not eating enough, though as this is a weight gain thread, I would hope none of you are undereating.;]
I'll start....
Breakfast (875 cal)*
- 1/2 cup oatmeal (150) cooked with
- 1 cup evaporated whole milk (300)
- 1 mashed banana (100)
- 2 tbsp peanut butter (200)
- 1 tbsp ground flaxseed and cinnamon to taste (50)
- 1 hard-boiled egg (75 cal)
Morning Snack (300 cal)*
- 1/4 cup mixed nuts (200)
- 1/4 cup dried apricots (100)
Lunch (660 cal)*
- 1/4 cup rice cooked in 1 cup chicken stock (300) and
- 1/2 cup canned or cooked chickpeas (145) and
- 1/3 cup shredded cheese (150) and
- 1/4 cup each onion, peppers, and tomato (30) cooked with
- 1 tbsp olive oil and curry powder to taste (120)
Afternoon snack (390 cal)*
- 1 serving baby carrots (35)
- 1/4 cup hummus (155)
- 1/4 cup mixed nuts (200)
Dinner (875 cal)*
- 1 cup of my insane Mac & Cheese recipe (515)

lunch: pret's summer brie-zie sandwich (roast veg and brie cheese)
later: probably some pb oatmeal as a snack then im going out, so alcohol :P but first an italian meal (my fave)
hey everyone!
AIMEE-i second GIBBIT, deff not a lot of food! and ditto on feeling so bloated!
GIBBIT-i dont like popcorn either, i also choke on it!lol haha, or sushi, its not so filling and just not my fav. yay!!youre doing amazing!
LALA-good job staying away from the scale!
aussie- good job! multiply the bread by 15 to get the total, then divide by 10 for the cals in 10 slices. and treats are ok, everyday, more than 1/day, lol, i eat too many tho i think!
AQUA-about the goal weight, i know it may seem like a high #, but, yes, you never weighed that BEFORE, but you were also younger before, youre maturing and no longer a 10 yr old so maybe now that youre older, puberty and such, youre meant to be heavier and therefore healthy too! eggs are yum!!!! keep up the good work and stay motivated!
CHARLIE-CONGRATS!!!!!!!
hmm, so deff increasing cals today w denser foods bc last nite i was so stuffed and hurting, but forced myself to eat, it was bad. kids portions? i know normal portions are huge but here it says on the menu you need to be like 10 to order it, so cant do that really.
thurs-
bagel, 1.5tbspns PB, apple, cheese, some raisins ~460
B-50g Oats 250g milk, reduced sugar jam, half can tuna w/tomato relish+basil
then went back to sleep :)
S-tin of beans, i drain of most of the sugary goo
L-~50g muesli, milk, other half of tuna, with cherry toms and red pepper, normandy fat free fromage frais with a chopped comice pear.
S-3 eggs.
S-(before training???)
D-probably having grilled chicken breast burger (home style chicken royale)
do people ask themselves why people have chips with a burger when you've got a bun, or moreso why youd have craploads of bread with a pasta dish, its all about baaalaaannceee :)
haha t17- you sound like me! I HAVE to balance everything. It really doesn't make sense, if I'm going to order pasta why would I also eat bread? My meals have to have a protein, a carb, and a vegetable. I'm also not capable of not having veggies in a meal, how else can I get my 5 a day?? I don't remember if I've welcomed you to the weight gain forum yet, but welcome! Some tips would be to get rid of the reduced sugar and fat free stuff, and while it's good to measure things to make sure you're eating enough, try to slowly get less exact about portion sizes, or add in a little more every day. And don't be afraid of carbs! I know, I fear bread too, but it's really important to have a little of everything,a nd you need the energy if you're working out.
agru- thanks! you're doing great too!
congrats to everyone getting into uni!
lala- good job not weighing today! keep pushing yourself one day at a time. I wish I could make myself lift weights more too. I can't wait til school starts again so I can go to the fitness or dance classes. I just can't be motivated to do any of the "traditional work outs" it's boring.
headingup- I'm going to make beetroot crisps! I love beets. I hate medicine too, right now I'm really afraid they're going to try to give me hormones and really bad side effects from birth control are what caused all the stomach problems I had last year that pushed me over the edge into this terrible ed. I don't ever want to be on bc again!
aussie- I hope you enjoyed your pasta! I always go for the kid portions too, everything else is always enough to feed a family of 4 at least. Plus it's cheaper and allows you to leave space for good things like dessert :)
I weighed again today and I'm up .5 lbs from last week, and a total of 1.5 in the last 3 weeks, so I guess I'm gaining at .5 a week. That seems so low for the amount I'm eating! But it does make me feel a bit better about stuffing myself day after day. I have to do whatever it takes right? That means a lot of food today and I'll post later.
Have a great day everyone!
GIBBIT-you can order a child's portion? around here you have to be like 10yrs old, i ask you bc youre like the only other person here from the US!
i need to have at least 2200 today since ive been doing 2000ish. its really getting down to the end of the summer and i need to put weight on, anything!
unfortunately, really all i can think of is going out for burgers or something as a way on increasing, i already have ice cream, pudding, choc almost everyday and compared to the rest of you, i feel really really unhealthy!?
only really weigh things out of interest (porridge i do because i cant get it right by eye), the muesli was just to see how much i gave myself. thanks for the welcome, i still use the lower cal stuff coz i can cram more in :) im not super underweight but id still like to gain some, the fromage frais is my extra proteiny :) but i totaly get what you're saying, esp with the carbs thing, i used to fear them so much and had no energy, now i love them again. :) off to make a sandwich
Everyone elses menus look great! Here is mine from today so far:
B- omelet made with cheese and mushrooms (dipped in ketchup), 2 pieces of toast with strawberry jelly, 2 cups of hazelnut coffee with creamer
S- apple and pretzels
L- probably a turkey wrap with tons of veggies and honey mustard on the side with a fruit?
S- maybe a fruit parfait or some dark chocolate?
D- chicken or salmon with bread and veggies?
S- fiber one with almond breeze milk
(tonight my mom is making her homemade sangria...whoooo hooo!!)
Angel-It really was delicious. I will definitely need to get some organic maple syrup next shopping trip.(I am not that concerned about sugar >.<)
Gibbit-Great job going out for sushi. I have never really tried it but I would love to! You are so awesome, and I ADORE what you eat, I love what most people eat here actually :]
Aussie-Awesome! Pasta? Congrats! I think kids portion is perfect. Most restaurants serve huge portions. Not necessary! But take that you ED! Oh yeah.
Headingup-Congratulations!!! That is fantastic! Oh and the elliptical is just another incentive to get healthy. You go girl! I do think you are wise to wait though. You really do not want to go away to college with issues still! So kick the ED so you can go enjoy life :-)
Charliebo-Thanks! I think your food looks really yummy too! I might try that Ezekiel bread sometime. It sounds yummy. I love nutty breads. Too bad it is not insanely caloric :[ Oh well, I STILL want to try it!
Aquaev-AHHHHH! You did it girl! You ate the cereal. Awesome awesome AWESOME job! I am so proud of you!
Charlieuk-What is date and raisin cake? Sounds good! Glad you seem to be enjoying yourself. Have fun tonight; and oh! I love Italian. Give me some :-O Lol!
Agruskin-I know! It is always like 10 and under. >.< Grrr. But I always find something that will suit me. And sometimes the kids is too small! Yeah calorie dense foods are way better. Much better than eating like 5 apples when you could have a big handful of nuts! But you are not unhealthy! Just try and eat whole grains, veggies and fruits, and protein! Maybe try more balanced meals and snacks? That might help you feel better. Like have the ice cream/pudding but maybe have something else with it, like a carb or something. Hope I helped!
Gibbit (again) -That is good though! Up another 1/2 pound is better than nothing :] Sounds like you are doing great!
I am happy again today. I feel like this eating disorder is finally leaving me. I am not longer anorexic Jess. I am JESS! :D :D :D
Breakfast: TWO packets organic oatmeal made with milk, blueberries
Lunch: Grilled chicken sandwich w/ tomatoes and lettuce on a whole grain bun, fruit(cut up apples, grapes, strawberries, and mandarin oranges)
^_^ Went out to lunch and so it was not much and I really wanted PB but I felt like I should get something. Kind of like Gibbit's sushi. And is sushi really good? I want to try it!
woohoo-deff making it to at least 2300 today, my mom wants to have a bbq and for the 1st time in about 3 years, im going to eat it.
thurs-
bagel, 1.5tbspns PB, apple, cheese, some raisins ~460
planning-
cereal, milk, trail mix ~200
cheese sandwich w/ avocado, sweet potato, lettuce+tomato, fage w/fruit sauce, ~TSPN pb, some veggies, fruit ~ 480
ice cream, fruit ~ 220
hamburger+bun, corn on the cob (plus ketchup...), veg salad w/trail mix~550
yogurt, apple, chocolate bar ~330 wow--looks like way tooooooooooo much??!! ~ 2350??
lala- Yeah, I suppose it makes sense that they would want a bit of extra weight on us for when we switch back to maintainence cals. I supposed 120 would be alright, but slimness runs in the family and my mom was 110 until college. I'm just really really terrified that they are going to push me to a weight that I'm unhappy with and I'm going to relapse once I stop needing to go to the outpatient place I go to.
agru- Blah, but the thing is I was 110 like eight months ago. I've had disordered eating since I was 10-ish, but I didn't start to lose weight until last December. Then BAM I lost a whole bunch in a few months. How much did you increase by yesterday?
t17- Yes! I am absolutely obsessed with balancing meals! I hate spaghetti night in my house, b/c that's pretty much all carbs and hardly any fat or protein. So I have to have pesto on my pasta, and a glass of milk to make everything even! Ah I wish I could go back to the old days when I didn't care what percentage of my diet was carbs...
positivelinny- Thanks for the suggestion. But if you read what I wrote to agruskin, you see that 130 would be kind of a drastic change. I'm a size 2 in a couple stores now, I don't think that I would only go up one size from gaining 15 or 20 lbs. It just kind of annoys me that my doctors won't even consider my ideas or look at my medical chart to find the right weight for me, even if it means preventing a relapse! Thanks again for the idea though.
Snack- Clif Kid twisted fruit bar, Cheddar Bunnies
Lunch- Homemade almond butter on WW bagel, chocolate mousse yogurt, TLC bar, carrot
Aqua: I feel the same. I'm a little wary of 155, to be honest. I'm used to being 10lbs less at most. \: I'll be okay once I get to start doing sports again like swimming and once I actually motivate myself to pick up weights (>___<) but still. Ugh. I find conventional work outs so... boring .__.
Part of me keeps feeling happy where I am now, which is stupid and the ED talking, because I know it's still in the underweight category. I can't wait for the flub on my abdomen to distribute. :\
heyyy everyone. I'm going to the doctors today for a final weigh in..kinda scared.I've been stuffing my face today and drinking lots of water(I know, not the best way.); but i just want them to realize i'm gaining and stop telling me I've got issues. It's really annoying when you're trying to help yourself and doctors don't realize it.
I'm gonna start today on not measuring so much, too. At leasttt I'll try my best so that I can finally stop one day! Wish me luck :D
b- egg whites, veggies, nutritional yeast, soy cheese. Trail mix, cheese crackers. Coffee w/ soy milk (400)
s- veggie bruschetta burger, whole wheat pita, spinach, marinara (250)
s- popcorn with blackberries, chocolate syrup, cocoa powder, more cocoa powder, (haha), maple syrup, cinnamon. [psychoj - it was amazing!] (200?)
s- frozen smoothie made w/ cup of greek yogurt, cinnamon, baby banana, blueberries, vanilla, & lotsss of ice (200)
oh man, my appointment's in an hourr. Xxx
lala- read my prev post about seitan
aqua and t17-wow i can totally understand. I used to have a certain percent of carbs in fear of getting too many. I'd rather have a 50-30-20 ratio (carbs-prot-fat), but I stopped when I started wanting to gain. LIke whooo in the world does that!
agru-youre not unhealthy girl! not by any means is it wrong to eat that. I wish I could do that, I need to be able to do it once I'm fully recovered! I don't actually enjoy my fear of "unhealthy" foods..Wish I woulda never known
lala- I can't wait to redistribute this weight too! I have a normal sized to big balloon sized (after eating) torso, and bony legs and arms. The only way to get that to happen though is to keep gaining! Just keep in mind the sexy curves you want, the hpe that I'll be able to fill my bras in again really keeps me going :)
aqua- how did the almond butter turn out? mine is super yummy, the honey really makes it perfect! I would just keep gaining unti lyour body feels stable. Most likely you'll need to be more than 110 at your height, though I understand how some bodies are just naturally smaller, I've always been around 120 at 5'8. The doctors probably tell you to aim for 120 or 130 just to give you a healthier perspective on what a normal weight for you woudl be. You might still be healthy at 110, but you would still be perfectly fine and thin if you were heavier too.
agru- yeah, they don't always let me get kids meals or they make you pay a few dollars extra. If not I get sides or an appetizer too. Sweet potato and avocado are two of my favorite things! You just reminded me I bought avocados a few days ago and forgot to have it for lunch :\ I'll have to work it into dinner. And you're not unhealthy! Many of us (me!!) are just nuerotic lol. Like psycho said, mayb eyou can add some fruit to your ice cream, different sauces. Like extra bbq sauce on your burger, and add some tomato to balance it out. mmm corn on the cob with butter! Enjoy the BBQ!
psycho- yay for being Jess again!! Isn't that a great feeling?! Sushi is actually really good, it's just not very filling, plus japanese food always has all kinds of sauces and a ton of salt from the soy sauce and the last thing I need with all this bloating is more sodium.
so far today:
b- apple, almonds, blueberries, oats, oney, kefir yogurt, wm vanilla yogurt, and soy milk.
l- eggplant, egg, and mango salsa sandwich, yummy!!!spinach salad with beans and sprouts, and made it extra oily today. Giant glass of v8 berry juice.
s- I'm thinking waffles with almond butter and maybe some fruit since I'm going to the farmers market :)
d- either cook something good, or go out to eat with my aunt who is wonderful and likes to take me out to special girls night dinners! I'm much better about eating out now but she was especially helpful when I was first starting to recover and my parents werent very understanding of my fear of restaurants. so she lets me pick the place and then puts no pressure on me about anything, we don't even talk about food! I <3 her!
i was trying to log the burger, bits its raw and i cant find how to log it, like its pre-portioned patties, 1.81lbs portioned into 6 patties, not lean, just regualar. everything is listed as cooked and i dont know, does it shrink when cooked? i dont know how to figure it out if someone can help?
another interview tomm-yay! but over an hr away and must figure out how to accomodate w/eating...
AQUA-OHH, IM SORRY YOURE UPSET, BUT I DUNNO, I KNOW IM AIMING FOR THE UPPER END OF MY BMI, AND YES WERE ALL DIFF, BUT YOURE PRETTY TALL, MAYBE THE DOCTORS ARE RT? OHHH-DID NOT EMAN CAPS, LOL SORRY! im not yelling at you, woops!
GIBBIT-i looked on a recipe website for sandwiches and the avocado, cheese, sweet potato combo was there and its so good! i dont think ive even asked for a kid's portion sicne i was younger, i mwan an anorexic girl getting that, noooo way. did you grill the eggplant?
ANGEL-good luck!!!! is it the boca bruchetta burger? how is it? i love love the cheeseburger, i make double cheeseburgers w/ ot, lol
so im thinking its about 5oz raw, 4oz cooked? so i think thats about 330cals? sound rt?
i dont care how much it is, i just want to know, to know, like if its 400, 600, wahtever, ill just eat it.
thanks!
UUUUUuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugggggggggggggggghhh. What I ate today? The freaking house! I WANNA BE ABLE TO GO CLOTHES SHOPPING! T____T
Hey guys. :( I feel like I'm totally ignoring all of your posts, but if I comment on things you say/do I feel like I'm intruding or something... Well it's either that, or I just sound selfish, I guess, lol... I dunno. Sorry. :( Congratulations on all of your accomplishments thus far- you all sound like you're doing well.
(I've never been really social.. D:)
Yesterday's dinner:
HUGE yam (400g, about) with cream cheese and butter on it- and another protein shake thing..
Today:
Breakfast- oats(quick oats and scottish oats!) with almonds, prunes, cinnamon, apple butter, PB, soymilk & yogurt
Snack: a smoothie with a cup of soymilk and a banana, + some coffee :D
Lunch: Dilled pea salad, with a ton of rice stick noodles; ice cream, yogurt, chocolate syrup (and OMG I looked at the label, and it has trans fats?!? ugh.)
Snack: Not sure yet, maybe some ginger snaps my mom picked up. :D They're starting to look very appetizing..
Dinner: Probably some salmon, and a pita- maybe some mushrooms too, nomnom.
Feeling very bloated today. D: Also, I was wondering what weight you guys think I should shoot for- I'm about 100lbs now probably, though I'm scared sh*tless to step on the damn scale.. ugh. I also have a small frame, and remember feeling really gross at 120, but that was probably the ED talking.. =_= agru, you're shooting for the upper end of your bmi? awesome :)
B- Oats, milk , jam,(300) tuna w/tomato relish+basil (80) (380)
then went back to sleep :)
S-tin of beans, i drain of most of the sugary goo (250)
L-~50g muesli, milk, (220) other half of tuna, with cherry toms and red pepper, (80) normandy fat free fromage frais with a chopped comice pear. (180) (480)
S-3 eggs. (240)
S-ham tomato cucumber sandwich on wm bread (200)
D- large chicken breast marinated in Ooil and lemon griddled (250) on a white burger bun (170) with veg (50) (470), then though bloody eat more! for the sake of it, some nuts, finger in the peanut butter (80) and an orange (80)
sooooo.... 2180.. is that enough? who knows... why does knowing you're still not eating enough give some sort of sick self gratification sometimes :(
hi for today!
SO much well doneness for everybody with exam results - crack open the champagne! I hope you feel fantastic! Psychoj - kudos for being JESS again! Shout it out loud halloo your name to the reverberate hills and al that jazz! Hey alysha, is a yam like a sweet potato? If so, I loooove the idea of cream cheese on it, yummy!
t17, totally understand what you mean about the self gratification for not eating enough, but you've just got to try and work through it, maybe you could make up your calories by eating "safe" foods? Also, good work with the peanut butter!maybe you could keep some breadsticks and stick them in instead of your finger?![]()
Hey, did anyone read the guardian today, about michael phelps' diet? if not, search it on the internet, the man eats 12,000 calories a day - that's more than I used to eat in a fortnight! it sounds amazing!
So here's what I ate today:
Breakfast: weetabix and milk
Lunch: prawn stirfy with rice and soy sauce
Dinner: jacket potato with beetroot, tomato and onion salad, podded peans and runner beans (thank you, pick your own!)
Pudding: just oneeee cornetttoooooooo (very bad opera impression)
and a gingerbread man for afternoon tea (me and my friend suzie have a joke that if we bite their heads off then we become queens of the gingerbread world - yeah we get weird looks in neros!)
hey, so does anyone have any interesting but healthy breakfast ideas? bored of toast and weetabix...and I want to increase calories from my average which is 1.600/1.700 to 2.500 - should I jump or gradually increase?
hugs
Aquaev thank you for the potato bread recipes, will def have to try them (don't have a bread maker though so will give the 2nd one a go). Also know how you feel about the goal weight thing- The max I've ever been is like 105lbs and even then I feel like that was when I was eating a load of crap. Soooo it's hard for me to justify gaining to that weight even though at 5ft 6 that still puts me in the underweight bmi category.
Charlieuk Congrats to you too! I'm in to Oxford! What about you? are you going to uni? Date and raisin cake sounds good, my mum used to make a date and walnut cake with a sort of sticky topping which was incred...reminds me of that.
t17 and gibbit I work in a restaurant and practically everyone has bread before they even have starters, main courses and then desserts! Sometimes 2 pieces of bread, then they go on to have pasta or pizza! It makes me cringe but I guess it's refreshing from my messed up obsessiveness that they honestly don't think twice about it. Gibbit hope you like the beet crisps!
Lala hurrah for wagamama's, i absolutely love that place, I have the cookbook too. I don't feel too abnormal about leaving over half a plate full as everyone else can't clear their plates either.
Theofournay good for you on wanting to increase- I've recently increased quite a big jump from anywhere between 1400-1700 up to a consistent 2000 a day. Don't think it's a bad thing to go for a biggish jump if you feel up to it. For breakfast you could try baking some berry muffins they can be quite small but pack quite a punch. I made a batch of buttermilk blueberry muffins which I froze and then just put one in the oven for 5 mins in the morning to defrost and warm a little. Not too exciting but yum!
Will post food in a little bit, really want a bath right now!
