Weight Gainers: What did YOU eat today?


I am copying the many times copied thread, "What did you eat today?" in hopes of helping some of those who are just starting to gain and have no clue what to eat. I know that when I began weight recovery, I was eating tons of low-cal foods just because that's what I was used to. I learned the hard way that dense foods are essential to weight gain when you have high caloric requirements (at one point I needed 4500 cal to maintain my weight on BEDREST). Perhaps newbies can get some ideas if we post our weight gain meal plans! Even if you're not gaining anymore, grab an old one and post it!:]
Please note that every body is different and some will need more or less calories than others to gain. This thread is just so that you can get an idea of what you need.
Oh, and yes, I'm breaking the "no calories, no portions" rule, since it is pretty helpful in this case. If you want to post cals/portions you can. I just ask that you don't post if you're not eating enough, though as this is a weight gain thread, I would hope none of you are undereating.;]
I'll start....
Breakfast (875 cal)*

  • 1/2 cup oatmeal (150) cooked with
  • 1 cup evaporated whole milk (300)
  • 1 mashed banana (100)
  • 2 tbsp peanut butter (200)
  • 1 tbsp ground flaxseed and cinnamon to taste (50) 
  • 1 hard-boiled egg (75 cal)

Morning Snack (300 cal)*

  • 1/4 cup mixed nuts (200)
  • 1/4 cup dried apricots (100)

Lunch (660 cal)*

  • 1/4 cup rice cooked in 1 cup chicken stock (300) and
  • 1/2 cup canned or cooked chickpeas (145) and
  • 1/3 cup shredded cheese (150) and
  • 1/4 cup each onion, peppers, and tomato (30) cooked with
  • 1 tbsp olive oil and curry powder to taste (120)

Afternoon snack (390 cal)*

  • 1 serving baby carrots (35)
  • 1/4 cup hummus (155)
  • 1/4 cup mixed nuts (200)

Dinner (875 cal)*

Evening snack (480)*

  • 1 cup plain whole milk yogurt (180)
  • 1/2 cup homemade granola (300)

About 3600 calories :]

Just checking in to log some calories for the day and leave some comments - will post foods later!


gibbit:  I also find real ice cream overly sweet and creamy, but over the summer I found a brand of soy ice cream that I really like - Turtle Mountain's "It's Soy Delicious."  It's fruit sweetened, so it definitely tastes slightly different than real ice cream, but I really like the flavor!  The only downside is that this particular product line can tend to be lower fat depending on the flavor - so maybe not ideal for weight gainers - but it also doesn't have tons of sugar and definitely good for an ice cream fix!  The company also makes other higher-fat ice creams - one's even made with coconut milk!  Haven't tried it yet, but sounds like it could be interesting.  P.S. I watched the Dem Convention last night, too!  All the way from Ecuador!

agru:  Don't worry to much about your estimate for the burgers (although who am I to talk, I'm pretty anal about estimate servings, too!)  Those cals sounds like they're probably about right (for 3 oz 80% lean beef).  And the best we can ever really do is guess anyway!

Just watched/helped my host mom make a traditional Ecuadorian soup, Locro de Papa, which we'll have for lunch later today.  Can't wait to try all these recipes out when I'm back in the states!

agru- I'm lactose intolerant so that's why there's never cheese in there, though yesterday I did have some soy swiss cheese! with the eating in the middle of the night I'm usually not even hungry, I just never sleep well and wake up often, mostly to go to the bathroom, but then it's just like compulsive eating. I figure since I'm up I might as well use that time wisely. I think I also got the idea in my head because I know some good carbs or warm milk and honey can help get you back to sleep. Though last night it was almost like a chore, I didn't really feel like getting up but in my head I was like uggghh ok fine! i'm awake, lets go eat, and i kind of just quickly get it down then go back to bed. night eating syndrome??

likear- ooo pass on all the new recipes you learn! I have seen soy delicious but its so expensive! I found the breyers all natural lactose free kind since I used to get the regular one from breyers but it would give me stomach aches. I've seen the coconut milk one online and really want it! but it hasnt come to my city yet :\ I think I'm going to write a letter to our whole foods or something. I already asked them to stock vegan marshmallows too. I loved Michelle Obama! His whole family is adorable!

Hey all my people :] I am back! It was really really fun actually. Better than I thought...We did "low ropes," basketball, swimming, and other things like devotions. I actually got elected for Service Rep. for my class. I help plan things to do with my class and others for service products and such. It actually came down to my boyfriend and I and we voted and I won! (He changed and voted for me! :D)

I also conquered some yummy foods there. I had a really delicious biscuit with jam.(not whole wheat so FF) I also had grits and eggs that were not made by me! Oh and also while sandwich thingy(FF) and trail mix that I brought from home that had some M&M'S in it.(FF)

Everyone sounds like they are doing pretty well. I went through and read the posts since I left; WOW, you all have been BUSY!

Gibbit-Is the soy delicious good? I have it in my store and I am not lactose intolerant, but I have heard it is better for you than ice cream.(although NOTHING can come b/t my two fave guys Ben and Jerry!) Night Eating Syndrome does not sound like you. You eat b/c you know you should and kind of half too. You also are aware that you are doing it while those people literally have no idea other than the food they find/empty cartons.

Agruskin-Great JOB! Congrats on eating nuggets and fries :] Mmm, fries actually sound good right now! You are back home right? Is everything back to normal?

Aussie-Great JOB! Awesome job for having that potato! Wasn't it yummy? I think they are!

Aquaev-Yay for school! :P I bet you are having a fab time though. Making new friends, meeting new teachers, LOTS of new things to do. :] Stick with your friends girl. You are healthy. Even when you think that you are eating too much b/c all they are eating is cranberry water and carrot sticks, you are the one with a fast metabolism, they are ruining theirs! You can do this and I cannot wait to hear all about how it went!

Aquaev+Peanut_butter-About the exercise thing: Yeah, I do workout a lot. I just really really love it! I have been doing weights more and trying to do at least like half weights, half cardio. I feel as though I have found a balance. I think the reason I am struggling to eat 2500+ is because I have cut back in little ways. Little changes can yield big results though... :/ But I am figuring it out :] as I go along! Thanks so much for your kind words and I will take into consideration what you have said!

Two questions-Will eating more in the morning make you "less full" in the evening? I mean, I LOOVVE big breakfasts, but I am sometimes afraid that I will still be really hungry in the night and the like. I hope that made sense! Another one sorry! Have you all found that once you started recovering that you are no longer afraid to say that you liked/like a food. I mean, during the ED, even saying I love apples made me feel kind of guilty, but now I am able to talk about food in a much more loving relationship! Anyone think this sounds familiar?

JESSSSSS-hey, yes home and back fighting!  yay for biscuits and candy-i really think we need to start living now, as wed like in the future!  this includes candy and biscuits, fries and burgers-DAILY!  white, wheat, whatever!  great job!  i love bfast, supposedly big bfast is better than big dinner but, listen to me- you are so youngm so active, if you eat a big bfast, then you find youre a bit hungrier than the dinner you had planned, its probably bc you were running around, your body is asking for food-feed+nourish it so the next day you can run around again!!!!  and yes, i now say i love candy bars, ie cream, gyros, everything!  i was scared to admit it, still am abit, but i know what you mean!  im eating just a bot less than you and no wherre nearly as active and im older-if youre hungry, eattttttttttttttt!

GIBBIT-i actually had a friend that slept walked and ate, this was uncounsious and she didnt remember it in the AM, i hope this doesnt freak you out.  at least you know youre doing it, i dunno oter than its your body asking for more food?

LIKEARE-ha, yea, i get anal w/ unknown foods, dont want it to drive me crazy so id rather just know the cals!  yum soup-eat up!!!!

so yes, again, how many cals would anyone estimate is in 1/4 raw ground beef(regular not lean)?  im guessing ~230-thanks!

I have to gain another kilo X_X my scales are 0.8 kg less then the ones at the clinic, and as my tw is set by the clinic scales... so I'm meant to be on about 24/2600 - and am only at 1800 so far

breakfast - 1 cup rice crispies, 1/3 cup fat free soya milk

s- tropical sugar free jubbly

l- marmite roll, 2 figs, 14g box raisins

s - 3 strawbs, vanilla alpro pot, 400kcals of figs

d - 1 meatfree chicken fillet, bulghur wheat, steamed veg, 2000kcal tortilla wrap.

ugh, so my parsents have a life and theyre now going out for dinner, there goes my plan of a burger+corn etc.  i hate when my plans get messed up and now i have no clue what to do, its like all of a sudden im lost when 1 min ago i felt so good...

Ugh, sorry guys, but I can't possibly even begin to answer these posts. I just got back from school an I'm exhausted, and I really can't answer 2.5 pages of posts! So I'll start answering the questions of people who post after me.

Sooooo the first day of school was today. It wasn't too bad, as far as school goes. I like all my classes pretty much, especially orchestra. The teacher is pretty young, and she's laid back too. The kids in the class all seem like the types that I can get along with. Nice, quirky, non clique-y kids!
Last year there were a couple of girls who were really rude to me and my close friends, they always ignored us and only talked to their little followers. But this year, their groupies all left them to go to a different school, so they came to us during lunch and tried to get us to sit with them. We refused, and it feels really nice to give them a taste of their own medicine!
Blah I hate the eating patterns of school days. I love eating a late breakfast at 10:00, then a snack at 11:30, and lunch at 1:00. But now I have to eat breakfast at 6:30, not have my snack, and the have lunch at 11. It makes me really hungry to go that long without eating! I hope I can adapt.

Breakfast- Mini WW bagel (.5 with PB, .5 with cream cheese), oatmeal w/ pumpkin, nectarine, egg

Lunch- PB and banana sammie (forgot how good these are!), chocolate mousse yogurt, Kashi TLC bar, carrots

Right After School snack- Almonds! This would normally be my AM snack but I can't have one in school :\

Snack- The usual, too lazy to type!

it's been a while, hmm, big decision, i'm ditching the scales for at least 1 month! it's just so scary to keep seeing strange numbers all the time and get controlled by numbers! now, it's much of relief..

so what did i eat today?

breakfast: 250 cals

apricot&peaches special k + hazelnuts+raisins+skimmed mik and honey

snack:350 cals

white chocolate + apple juice

lunch: 350 cals

1 mango + honey popcorn

dinner:400 cals

1 grilled fish + 1 mango+ dates

late night snack:400 cals

cookies! *i made them!!* mom says i should open a bakery, i'm always BAKING SOMETHING..and before recovery, i baked and wouldn't even taste it, which drove my family crazy..now, well, i eat more than they do! feels so strange to be eating more than everybody else when they are actually,... um... fat??

seemd like soo much food! and still only 1800 cals! AND i exercised and burned about 250 cals..i'm trying so desperatly to maintain or lose at least  5 lbs to get to the dance studio! UGH. any ideas for maintainence? i'm 16, 5ft2, and about 102 lbs...also, very active and exercise *cardio* at least 1 hour a day on average..

Gibbit: Hi! :D I'm alright, thanks for asking. Eating is back on track now and I'm hyped about being able to swim again. It's so wierd that college'll start again next week! Still quite nervous about what I'm going to do about eating as our college is thoroughly overpriced and lacking in healthy, clean options. C'est la vie. My dad is being out of order to all of us today as my mum brought up the fact that he plays golf, pool and now wants to join a gym (which, while my sister, mum and I would make use of the classes and pool, he will undoubtably avoid) and yet we're yelled at if we want to take up activities that need paying for, and he's being all childish and bitchy. Ugh.

Charliebo: Ooh, acupunture? Is that any good? My mum studied Indian Head Massage, but I don't know anyone that's had experience with acupunture. ^^;

agru- eek dentist!! good luck! So are you planning on just making the burger for yourself anyways because that's what I was going to suggest :). After 3000 calories during the day I don't think my body is asking for more food, like I said, i'm usually not even hungry and i force myself to get up when my body just wants sleep. I think I'm just as compulsive about eating now though as i was about not eating before. Maybe I should look into help for ocd? I had some tendencies even pre ed, but now a lot of my habits are kind of out of control.

relena- I think throwing away the scale is a great idea! I really want to do that myself. Try having more of a real lunch to get in more food, and maybe add some bread or rice to dinner? I'm not seeing many carbs (I'm horrible about that too!) but you really need more with your level of activity. PLEASE dont try to lose weight!! you're already at a very low weight and being under 100 lbs would be very unhealthy. I know you really want to dance, but this studio in particular is crazy.

aqua- glad you had a good day!! could you try bringing a snack to school? I know they technically don't allow you to eat, but I would always (and still do) sneak in food and keep it under my desk haha.

peanut butter- :::HANDS IN THE AIR!::: what is sugar free jubbly? is that the sf jello? you should definitely not be filling up on those, they're only 10 cals! if you switched to regular soy milk it would also be easier to reach your calorie goal. good job on all the dried fruit! that's what I do when I'm low for the day.

psycho- great job on all the ff!! glad you had fun, and remember to keep eating with all the exercise! I've never tried soy delicious but I actually just bought it and tried a little. it's good but still really sweet and creamy.

so as for me, I'm almost at 3000 cals and havent had dinner or snack! :O I also went grocery shopping and got more ff yogurt, soy delicious cherry nirvana ice cream, pb, and chocolate betternpeanut butter.I plan to save this for when I reach maintenance and still need my pb fix, but it's mentioned so much on here that i was curious. it's really good!!!

b- greek ff yogurt, big banana, blueberries, coconut, flax seeds, vanilla soymilk.

l- curried mixed beans and bulgur wheat with red pepper, made with lots of spiciness and olive oil, OJ

s- walking around the krogers and sampling- apple slices, pineapple, almonds, dried mango, olive bar stuff

s- sampled all the goodies i bought! spoonful of ice cream, spoonful of betternpb, then ate pear with about 3 tbsps sunbutter and honey

d- plan to make this middle eastern bean and grain sweet stew and add sweet potato, and carrots. and probably something else to go with this??

s- cherry nirvana soy delicious :) and something else with it.

might go out to a bar too, so if i do there will be a glass of wine or something too.

i didn't read alot ofthe other posts so hopefulyl nto a lot of repeats.

Starting a couple days ago i've been determined to boost my metabolism just in case my bodys in starvation mode, and i'ms tarting my eating at least 1500 cals per day, then next week going to 1600, etc until i reach about 2200 per day.

tuesdays food:
B- breakfast smoothie with fruit, yogurt, milk, protein powder, frozen banana [actually tastes really good] 450 cals

Snack: two clementines [60 cals?]

Lunch: big bowl of steamed broccoli with herbs, olive oil, garlic. [300 cal]

snack: 1/2 a bagel with REAL cream cheese (it's been AGES since i've had any, but soo worth it) [300 cal]

Snack 2: small bowl of cinnaon and banana oatmeal [200 cals]

Dinner: a few pieces of indian bread, 1.5 cups of chickpeas with gravy, indian yogurt, corn, curry. [650]

So far: 1960

I never thought i'd say htis but i'm not feeling bloated like i dos ometimes when i only eat 1200 cals, and i'm actually ecstatic about this, and really nervous because yesterday i only ate like 1300 but today i don't feel like i ate that much but are a lot mroe calories.

I am actually really proud of myself because today i ate a lot more calorie-dense food than I normally would :)! and on some days i'd only eat like 1200 cals because ia te at on of fruits and veggies. atm doing cardio daily but want to add strength training eventually but very gradually.

question: is 8pmt oo late for an evening snack? if not then probably will have a banana with peanut butter and nuts, or big bowl of oatmeal :). (another question, where can i find betternpeanutbutter and is it available in canada??]

i'm only 13 btw, and need a tonnnn of help and advice with this weight gian stuff so send me a message if you'd have the patience to listen to all my questions and help me out?

SLR- welcome to the thread! theirs a lot of great info here and ideas for meals and snacks.  it doesnt matter when you eat, eating after a certain time being bad is a myth.  not sure of your stats but many find that they need to eat 2500+cals in order to gain, without excercise.  what are your stats? great job for starting to recover!

GIBBIT-ha-that betternpb, i used to have it before i started to recover, i think if i had it now id puke, compared to real PB i dont think its good at all.  a company called "The PB+Co" makes diff PBs, i love the cinammon raisin but they have white choc, dark choc, lots of varieites. dinner sounds incredible!

so for me, parents did not end up gpoing out bc some workers we were expecting at the house were late.  im liking my mother cooking dinner, i buy foods i like and then sort of tell her how to make it, deff ensuring that i eat tons more.  i have a follow up interview tomm at 10am-the place is 1.5 hrs away meaning i need to wake up at 7 30 and i think make and take bfast for the road.  i hate this bc w my stomach i really need like 2 hrs to digest and go to the bathroom, otherwise i dont end up going for like 3 days!  im thinking of taking my normal bfast-PB+J sandwich, apple, cheese w me in the car but ugh, i pee like 30 times in the morning and if i have coffee-which i need to wake me up, ill have to go so bad, i dunno, its just annoying but i need a job so whatever i suppose?!

i was wondering if anyone could recommend how much fat i should be taking in. i looked at two calculators and one said 51 grams and the other said 52 gram or less. or less? how much less? is that the limit or is that how much i should be eating? less? 2 grams is less but obviously i know it's gotta be more than that.

anyone know?
i'm 21, 5' 5" and about 103 pounds if that helps.

butterfly-you need to gain, thats it. r ecovering ed ppl need more fat than the average person.  i dont count stuff like that so others may answer diff, but just eat foods you like, not just fruits+veg, but normal other foods have fat.  im not trying to be mean, but eat for life, enjoy what you eat...good luck

lalabanana and gibbit: I have been going to acupuncture once a week for several months now. I cannot afford a doctor and she gives me a really good deal. It is my favorite hour of the week! The Chinese "mapped' the body and every point corresponds to some sort of meridian. I have had needles in my ears, forehead, neck, stomach, chest, hands, arms, legs, basically everywhere! I have no problem with needles because I've spent so much time in the hospital so I don't know if someone who was squeamish would have a hard time with them. The needles she uses are 1 - 3 inches long and very thin. There is a tiny prick when she first inserts them and again when they are removed but, other than that, it is rarely painful. She can treat just about anything. earlier this year I had bone bruises from too much running. Voila! Magic, she healed my legs. The times she has done the "poop points" I have gone the next morning. Currently, she is trying to stimulate my appetite but this has yet to be successful. Usually, she inserts the needles, places a heat lamp over my stomach, turns down the lights, and leaves for about 45 minutes. There is soft music playing in the background. It is the only time I am truly able to relax. I don't exactly know how to describe it. I don't fall asleep but my thoughts just seem to ebb and flow without me really thinking. I have tried both yoga and meditation and was never able to clear my mind. I think this is what those things strive to achieve. When she comes back, if I'm lucky I get a neck massage (heaven!) Plus, she is just a really cool person. I love talking to her. It is kind of funny though because she is a bit flighty and a couple of times she has forgotten to remove all the needles. Once she left one sticking out of the top of my head! Luckily, I had gone straight home so no one saw me with a red plastic needle cap amidst my unruly curls!

Charliebo- I've always wanted to try acupuncture, but I'd probably faint! I'm definitely not afraid of needles, but I have this thing where if my skin is punctured or cut my blood pressure drops like nobody's business- I think it's called vasal vagal or something silly like that, haha. D:

Slr- Good job on your food today, and welcome!! 8pm is definitely NOT too late to eat a bed time snack! You can eat at any time you like; the only reason people suggest otherwise is because sometimes, if you eat a lot of dense food before bed, your body can put more energy into digesting the food than it will for sleeping, so your sleep won't be very good. I'm not sure if they have Better'n'PB in Canada, I haven't seen it anywhere where I live in Ontario. :] You should really just stick with the full-fat stuff though, it's ultimately better for you than something as processed as better'n'pb.

when_i_fly- if it helps, I take in around 90g of fat a day (3000cals total) and I haven't died yet. :P You should be totally fine as long as it's not 90% of what you eat, lol! G'luck!

Aqua- ahhaa, I remember the clique days. >__< They really suck; but what people don't realize is that you start to care a lot less about what others think about you as you get older. I hate not being able to eat in class too. Some of my teachers allow it, but sometimes I had to sneak food into the class and then I got soooo pissed off when they told me to throw it out after catching me, lol! Ah well, hope you have a great school year! Try not to stress so much :P

peanut_butter- *PUTS HANDS UP* YEYE. Lmao! I LOVELOVELOVE dried fruit, especially prunes and apricots. D: Unfortunately I've run out of them though! MUST BUY MOREEE!

Psychoj- You know what? I always eat a 1000+ calorie breakfast as the biggest meal of my day, and no matter what, I'm ALWAYS stuffed by the evening. I also find that I'm able to say that I love __________(insert foodie here)____ a lot more often now! It's like WOW, I'M ALLOWED TO EAT THIS!! Holy crap, hahahaa!

Gibbit- I know exactly what you mean, guhh>< I've always had a LOT of problems too, like I had really bad IBS (it's gotten better now since I've been eating way more fiber) but there were times when I wouldn't go to the bathroom for a week straight or longer and I'd be in so much pain! OR, the opposite thing would happen and I'd have to miss school because I'd be stuck on the toilet, LOL! I've also been trying to eliminate all processed foods, but it's really really difficult.. esp. when I'm trying to get the cals up AND be healthy at the same time and not get like 400g of fat, lmao. Ahhhh. I think I need a "toxin flush", har har.


Agru- LOL I know they're not real bagels, hahaha XD you're so lucky, it sounds like you live near an AWESME bakery- mine was closed today!!! I'm sad now, because I was looking forward to buying some awesome bagels and putting stuff on 'em but now I can't. >_< Maybe I'll try again tomorrow. It's just a small-town bakery, so they're not open for very long/every day... gahhh.

 

Ah... also, guys, I feel way way huge. >> I don't know why. The scale says I'm up like 108477866567657890lbs, but the scale is evil anyway. >_< I just wish i could STOP paying attention  to these things... but I'm being held hostage by them D: Gahhhh... I also can't even squeeze into my shorts anymore... :( Do you guys think it's time to switch to maintenance? I don't know what to do..

ALYSHA-hey!  so what are your stats now? i hate weighing, i normally do 1/wk on wed but i dont think i even want to.  i eamn, im supposed to gain, i couldnt have gained 20lbs in 2 days, so since i sort of relapsed while i was away and only go back at it like 2 days ago, maybe ill wait a few.  im also feeling a bit big, im scared ill get sued to eating more and then need to stop, i cant remeber how i used to eat and think that im eating tons, when i think really im just eating a bit more than normal.deff go for bagels when you can! every time i eat them i think wow, this is so good!  hows everything else going?

Agru- I'm now ALMOST 5'2" and 105lbs. guhhhhhh. I wish I could go for a while without weighing myself but it's so difficult. >< I tried it for like a week and was fine, but now I'm weighing myself like 5 TIMES A DAY just to see the fluctuations!! I need to stop! :( I'm really afraid that I might relapse. >< It's just so easy to not eat enough, blahhhh. And seeing my weight go up like a pound a day or MORE makes me hate myself so much. I also don't really remember how I used to eat... I wish I could learn to listen to my body. I saw your forum topic on mechanical eating, and I was wondering about the same thing, ahhh.. anyways- everything's alright, I suppose. School starts in less than a week and I have to choose between going to my dad's this weekend, or going to my aunt's cottage. >< I dunno, I'm thinking of going to the cottage just to get away from things for a bit, but then again, I haven't seen my dad in a few weeks and I miss him. :( Blah, decisions..  And I actually got to sleep last night at an appropriate time. Yay!
