Weight hasn't gone up on the scale, but I look bigger!?

Quote  |  Reply

I mean, what the hey!?!?

I weigh around 110-112 on any given day, and lately I've been avoiding the scale cause I look so much bigger! My stomach isn't sticking out more than usual, but the sides of my stomach look bigger, and my thighs seem to look bigger too.

I got on the scale today for the first time in a while. I figured I needed to face the weight I had gained and work on my diet again. I went on it multiple times and it kept saying 111. I'm soooooo confused! Is there something that I'm over looking that could make me look bigger even if my weight hasn't changed?

I'm getting frustrated. I've been working out and eating healthy, and I look bigger somehow. I really wanted to be in shape for beach season. Argh!

Hi jblarghp: What type of workouts are you doing?? Are you doing any strength training, such as lifting weights?? If so, chances are you are exchanging fat for muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat, but muscle is more efficient at burning calories than fat. Also understand you can't spot reduce any part of your body, such as hips, thighs, stomach, etc. In due time, your body will eventually get to those spots to use for burning calories.

As for your weight, a scale is only part of the whole weight loss picture. Besides weighing yourself, have you taken any tape measurements?? While you may not be losing any weight by the numbers, chances are you may be losing inches off your waist. Try doing waist measurements on a regular basis to see if you're losing inches off your waist. Also, take a look at your clothes: are they fitting better than before?? That's another good indication of something happening.

Sounds very odd.. Any chance something could be wrong with your scale? Have you tried weighing something else on it to see if the reading was accurate?

It could be all in your head. You're focusing so much on your body and how it looks that suddenly you think you look bigger. This sometimes happens to me while I'm dieting; just because I'll pay more attention to how I look, I'll start to think I look bigger when I don't.

I'd recommend taking some measurements. If they don't change and the scale doesn't change, you'll know it's a mental thing rather than a physical thing.

i do this all the time. i think your scale is fine its probably in your head. want to hear something ridiculous? i swear i look fatter after i work out and after i get out of the shower, i think its because the heat expands your skin, and i look skinnier when im cold. i also think that i look bigger days after i ate alot the day before, like i think i look 5 lbs heavier or something and don't think i'll fit into the same pants i did the day before. i honestly am convinced that i look significantly different. of course i dont really. also, i went to japan and wasn't eating much becaus ei didnt like the food and now that ive been home ive been eating more over the past month. im also trying to kick my bingeing habit so ive been not restricting alot if i do binge (am getting better though so thats good at least) and i was convinced i gained a ton of weight. i stepped on the scale and i was pretty much the same. im the same weight as you, maybe its the weight ahaha

I made sure there wasn't anything wrong with my scale, and it appears to be accurate.

I used to take measurements, but I would never stick with it. I guess I'll have to start again to make sure it's not all in my head!

Thanks for the replies.

I kind of laughed to myself when I seen this because I feel the exact same way and I thought maybe I was just going crazy ??

I feel HUGE, and I think I look huge too.

scale hasnt moved though.

I think its in our heads (haha)

It's nice to know that Im not the only one feeling this way though
