is this weight okay if i'm eating well?
okay, so here is my question. if i typically eat like this (minus the beers and probably add in a few snacks, maybe some chips and hummus because obviously i don't drink everyday) am 21, female and maintain 100-105 pounds at 5'4.75" (i'm not quite 5'5") is it okay to maintain this weight?
i know a lot of people say no because 'i'm underweight according to bmi charts' but is it possible that i'm just a smaller person and that it can be a healthy weight for me?
i'm vegan and i eat really healthy. i'm not super active but i am a server (3-4 hours 3-5 times a week) and i ride my bike places because i don't have a car (and it's better for the earth) but besides that i am not very active and all i do is toning 3x/week for maybe 20 minutes.
what do you think? i eat when i'm hungry (well except when i'm at work cause i can't snack on stuff well waiting tables though i wish i could because i get hungry at work :( !!) and i try to make sure i get enough good fat, lean protein, whole grains and of course vitamins and water.
i don't think i'm fat and i don't want to lose weight. i have things i hate about my body but overall i think i look decent and just try to focus on keep healthy and toned.
what do you think? opinions?
this is today's eating:
breakfast- 3/4 cup honey nut cheerios w/ teeny bit of soy milk (ran out this morning), cinnamon almond coffee w/ 1/4 cup rice milk
snack- a couple fire roasted tomato and olive oil triscuits, serving baby carrots and 5 black olives
snack- espresso w/ splash of soy milk
snack- strawberry soy yogurt w/ ground flax, cinnamon apple sunrise luna bar
lunch- salad w/ green leaf lettuce, teriyaki tofu, tomato, onion, carrots,
shredded soy chedder 'cheese' and homemade garlic ginger dressing, 1 cup orange juice
i had about two serving of the tofu and about 1/4-1/3 cup of the dressing
snack- fruit smoothie (1/2 cup frozen tart cherries, 1/2 banana, 1 cup orange juice), handful of almonds
dinner- whole grain tortilla w/ 1/3 cups vegetarian refried beans (w/ veggies cooked in), onion, tomato, 1 cup unsweetened soymilk
snack- drinks tonight. it's my friend's birthday and another friend's going away party (same party combined) but i'm going to try to stick to a few lite beers at most.
if i drink two beers it will be around 1760 at three i will be around 1860.
IF, and absolutely ONLY if, you're healthy and happy.
I wish you the best. :)
Being underweight (like being overweight) has medical consequences. You may not see them today, tomorrow or next week but at some point they will catch up with you. If your BMI is above 20 you're 'normal'. If it's below 19 you're underweight. If you're 5'5" yours is 16.80..... That's not just a bit on the skinny side, that's a real problem.
There are people who are severely obese who think they look decent, eat healthily and are very happy with themselves. But they're kidding themselves and so are you, unfortunately.
I am 5'4 , 112 lb and have a BMI of 19
I am on the thin side but not " skinny"
I have a small frame
I used to be your weight and had the same issue you do!
I ate enough and felt fine so I did not think there was a reason for me to gain weight……
You eat similar to me, super healthy, and you keep active; my problem was I UNDERESTIMATED the calories I burnt.
REMEMBER - just because you are not working up a sweat, being on your feel and moving your body burns a lot of calories too!
Those 3 strength sessions you do a week will also increase your already fast metabolism!
You are obviously naturally slim, and you also eat healthily and keep active
You eat enough and you eat well, so you are burning too many calories
Keep in mind you are also eating VERY healthy - LOTS of vegan foods and healthy foods that fill you up and are easily to burn off so it feels like eating more will be absurd ; it felt like that for me when I needed to gain weight, I was eating enough and the same sort of foods as you are, so it really seamed that eating more calories was unnecessary
If you are ate 4000 calories a day and stayed the same, then you would obviously be one of those people who just stayed skinny no matter what
I am naturally slim and when I was your weight I was eating enough so assumed it was my natural, healthiest weight, but feeling good does not mean you shouldn’t at least try and gain some weight for physiological/health reasons.
It would be better for your health if you tried to gain a little weight, never eat under 2000 calories a day, and remember that even though you FEEL healthy, it will still benefit your health MORE if you gained a little weight!
I gained a little weight because experts say that a BMI of 16 or 17 is unhealthy
To be honest I did not feel any different once I gained weight, but I know that it was better for my body
i disagree. a bmi of 16.8 is very low. if you have a history of ed then it is possible that you are deliberately maintaining this low.
how would you feel if your weight was 10lbs higher tomorrow?-i am wondering how you would react to weight gain.
do you get your period. that is the sure fire healthy or not question. no period then its def not the right place for you to be in.
i also dont agree with the above that you have a fast metabolism. if anything with your activity level your metabolic rate is slowed. ideally someone active of your height should eat about 22-2300 cals. so there is no indication that your metabolism is fast.
To be perfectly honest with you it sounds like you are making excuses and kidding yourself as to why you should stay at a low weight.
I am recovering from anorexia and you sound exactly like I did when at my lowest weight; yes I was much lower than you are now so it wasn't feasible, BUT you are still underweight and no matter how much you think it is "natural" it is still unhealthy.
Like someone else said, if you were overweight but ate to hunger I'm sure you would still be determined to lose weight to get to a healthy BMI. It is the same with being underweight...you will have numerous health problems in the near future if you do not gain weight.
Do you have your periods? That is one sign. But also, the fact that you are eating SUCH "healthy" foods shows that you are not naturally this thin. If you were eating high calorie foods along with it, then fair enough, but you are not. Also, 1860 calories is weight loss calories for many people, and so until you are eating around 2200 you cannot say you are "naturally" maintaining this low weight. Your activity levels are actually quite high, despite not doing loads of exercise, so this will mean you need to eat even more than a normal sedentary person to keep healthy.
Lastly, the fact that you are counting calories, and even coming on this website, indicates that you do have some issues surrounding your food and your weight. I admit that I have a problem, but you seem to be denying you do. If you are even questioning whether or not you are healthy, you probably aren't. This rings alarm bells for me as it could be the beginning of an eating disorder...please try to get some help before things get worse. If you genuinely do not have a problem with gaining weight, then get on and do it and make yourself healthy!

Right now, at 21yo/5'4.75"/100-105lbs, your BMI ranges from 16.8 to 17.6 which is classified as underweight. A healthy weight range for your height would be 110lbs - 148lbs.
There are some people (not many) who are naturally underweight but they maintain on much more calories than required for the average person (ie. 3000+ calories a day).
How did you reach your current weight?
Did you diet to get to your weight now or have you always been this weight?
How would you feel about gaining another 5-10lbs to reach a healthy weight?
Have you discussed with your doctor or better yet a nutritionist or dietitian your weight and your daily calories consumed?
If you are a server, ride your bike everywhere, and do strength training it sounds like you are at least moderately active if not very active.
If you were to gain 5-10lbs and reach 110lbs, your BMR would be 1339.12 calories.
To calculate your Daily Calorie Needs you would use the following calculations:
- If you are sedentary(little or no exercise) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.2 (1606 Calories)
- If you are lightly active(light exercise/sports 1-3 days/week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.375 (1841 Calories)
- If you are moderatetely active(moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.55 (2075 Calories)
- If you are very active(hard exercise/sports 6-7 days a week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.725 (2309 Calories)
- If you are extra active(very hard exercise/sports & physical job or 2x training) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.9 (2544 Calories)
So, essentially, you would need at least 2000 calories a day to maintain your current activity level.

I would not ask here. i would ask a medical professional.
I have observed, and being around here a while you might have too, that nearly all who ask variations on the is-it-okay-if-I'm-underweight-since-I-eat-eno ugh question get attacked, lectures about the risks of being underweight or receive moderator posts.people may have good intentions but there is no way of really knowing from an online forum.
I dont think its a good idea for you to stay at 100-105. Like everyone else said...this just sounds liek you're denying your weight gain. I am 5'4'' and 108 pounds, and I STILL need to gain to 110....so you are def very underweight....you need to first eat more and second, gain weight.
its hard I know...but it can be done...
Im naturaly slim too but not this slim...I always ate wtvr I wanted and maintained 115 pounds, no matter what. I never realized how lucky I was until now...and I wish that it could be like that again...but stupid ED makes it hard. But I am determined, and you should too.
Health is priority, not a slim figure.
dont settle for being unhealthy! and eat more caloricly dense foods! it will help you, seriously
take care!
i know people who just are really naturally slim (they eat whatever they want, whenever they're hungry, but don't have very big appetites), so i'm inclined to say that it's possible that you can be underweight and healthy. if you're seriously questioning this, and health is your priority, then be honest with yourself.
emotionally: generally, ask yourself questions like: If you were to gain a good deal of weight but still be healthy, would it upset you? Are you consciously thinking of your food in terms of how it might affect your weight gain/loss? Do you enjoy eating?
physically: Do you get cold/exhausted easily? Is the regularity of your period, bowel movement etc. a cause of concern? Do you fall sick easily/do your bones ache often? etc. I have a friend who broke his first bone 6 months after eating a vegan diet, so physical problems/deficiencies caused by a lack of adequate nutrition don't necessarily come to the surface until much later. To be absolutely certain, you'd probably have to do a health checkup with a medical professional

that is what i'm afraid of. i know some people underweight can have health consequences for staying underweight for a long period of time. but i think i eat a fine amount of food, exercise enough, get enough water, take my vitamins and everything.
it just seems like if i know i am doing everything right that i shouldn't worry about my weight. but i don't know, i'm not a doctor. maybe i should ask a doctor. the times i've been in to the doctor they haven't sadi anything about having to be worried. they said i was small and it's probably related to my diet and that my blood pressure, cholesterol and iron looked fine. i still get a period that's extremely regular.
the only problem i do see with being underweight is i don't have the muscle mass that is needed to lift heavy things. but that's pretty much it.

my doctor has tested my cholesterol and iron and blood pressure and he said they were fine. i have ibs and it hasn't been acting up as much lately. i've been making sure i get 4-6 meals a day that are well balanced and nutritious.
i would usually say it isn't healthy to weigh as much as i do but i'm doing all the right things.

i've had an eating disorder before. i was 92 pounds at one point.
but i've gained 8-13 pounds and i'm fine with that. now i eat healthy. i eat what i want ("healthy" foods, i'm not sure why there was even quotation marks around healthy) when i want.
i have a bmr of 1300. i eat at least 200 calories more than that everyday and obviously more than that on days i'm active. 1860 is not weight loss calories for me by any means. that's 560 that i consume to make up for what ever the day's activities might have been. eating 2200 calories would be 900 over my bmr so unless i was extremely active one day i don't think i need to eat that much.
i ate that much for a while because i thought that i should gain weight solely because bmi charts said i needed to. but i gave up on that because it didn't make me feel any better and was extremely difficult to try to eat that many calories throughout the day and still keep a balance of carbs, protein and fats.
i mean, i understand what you are trying to say but i don't think i am making excuses. and i don't think i''m under eating by any means.

thank you for the information. i ride my bike to and from work the days i work (which is a 10 minute ride) and i work for 3-5 hour periods probably 4 or 5 times a week. i would say i'm lightly active because other than that i will do some crunches every other day and some leg lifts but i pretty much sit around the house when i'm not working.
i am eating a decent amount for my bmr. i know it's about 1300 right now and i eat 200-700+ that a day depending on what i've done.
i don't think 3000 calories could fit inside me. i'm not saying i'm one of those people that can't gain weight even if they ate a ton of food. i'm just saying i eat a normal amount of food and i'm still 100-105 pounds.
___________________________________
How did you reach your current weight?
i dieted. i used to have an ed and i probably ate 400-800 calories a day at one point. i uped that to 1200 and then to 1500 and for a while around 2000 but that was extremely difficult to try to get in because i had to eat such big frequent meals which mostly consisted of bread and fat. (trust me, i did not feel any healthier.)
Did you diet to get to your weight now or have you always been this weight?
i used to be 130 pounds. that was my high weight. but that's back when i wasn't vegan and i thought fried chicken strips were the healthy option. haha. my day probably consisted of eating 2 bowls of cereal w/ 1 cup 2% milk each, a bunch of chips and cookies for snack, some pizza slices and a soda, probably a bunch of combos and chocolate after that and then lots of roast and then more cookies and milk probably. i probably ate around 3400 calories typically at my heavy weight and none of that came from anything slightly nutritious.
How would you feel about gaining another 5-10lbs to reach a healthy weight?
i don't know how i would feel about weighing 110-115 pounds. i guess it's more about how i felt then how much i weighed and if i were in shape and toned and looked alright. i mean, i did tried this (gaining) at one point and i didn't get over 105 and i was spending a lot of time, energy and money on trying. i just don't feel like it's worth it anymore if i'm eating healthy and eating enough.
Have you discussed with your doctor or better yet a nutritionist or dietitian your weight and your daily calories consumed?
i haven't talked to a nutritionist or dietitian about this nor would i have the money to. but i go to my doctor ever so often (just recently because i was diagnosed with ibs) and they were never worried about my weight. last time i went i was probably 103.

i just feel like i'd be gaining weight for the sake of it. and i don't have the energy and money to spend on something like that if i already feel healthy and eat well.
i'm not going to add a bunch of fat to my diet if i'm already getting enough JUST to add more calories. that doesn't seem to be a god thing to recommend though i know it's what everyone recommends to people who need to gain weight. if i were 92 pounds i might take that advice because hat obviously can't be a healthy weight for me. but i think 100-105 pounds isn't too far off from a healthy weight.
PLEASE LISTEN TO ME.
Your situation sounds VERY similar to what I have been through:
I was 130 pounds, and the same height as you. I ate too much, didn’t exercise, and ate the wrong foods.
I decided I hated feeling unhealthy and decided to get fit and healthy
Unfortunately I wanted to keep on loosing weight and ended up with anorexia, and got down to about the same as you did.
I have overcome the grasp of the illness BUT it DOES stay with you EVEN THOUGH you “ eat when your hungry, stop when your full, and don’t think about food so much”
It is GREAT that you have improved your attitude towards food since your ED, it sounds like you have come a long way, so listen to this:
If you had the strength to over come an ED, then you DO have the strength to gain a little weight.
You are trying to listen and understand your body the best that you can, but some times, ESPECIALLY with people who have had eating disorders, there are things in your mind YOU ARE NOT AWARE OF that can come into play - you are obviously comfortable at your weight and something in your mind that your not aware of could be trying to keep you at this “ comfortable” weight.
I have looked at how many calories you consume and the hard fact is, YOU ARE NOT TRYING HARD ENOUGH. Sorry, but if you spaced you meals out and ate calorie dense foods like nuts and unsaturated fats, you could EASILY eat up to 2000 calories a day.
LISTEN: You have had an eating disorder so your body IS USED to not getting enough food, so the fact that your not really eating enough to reach a healthier weight is not going to register - you may well FEEL fine, but physically, science says there is room for improvement.
Sorry if this sounds harsh, but I feel very compelled to help you because you sound EXACTLY like I did, very recently.
During this year, there have been times when my weight has fallen. I DID NOT INTENTIONALLY set out to loose weight, I just was not eating enough for the exercise I was doing.
IT IS EASIER for people who have had anorexia or ED ’s to loose weight ACCIDENTALLY - your body has improved SO much since that you don’t notice when the weight drops a little bit because you STILL feel much better then you did at 90 pounds.
Based on my experience AND what all the experts who have dealt with eating disorders and health issues have to say, YOU CAN gain weight if you try hard enough!
YOU WILL benefit from gaining weight!
You are VERY similar to me with your diet. CONSIDER: YOU EAT VERY HEALTHY - SO healthy, that you are used to eating large amounts of food with little calories for the size!
I eat SUPER healthy too and I DID NOT REALISE that when your this healthy, you do not realize how little calories you consume because your food is such good quality and bulky and filling - THAT IS WHY PEOPLE TRYING to lose weight often feel like they are eating SO much, because you CAN eat a lot more when you eat like we both do!
The good news is you are not dying of hunger yet, and you are not TOO far away from a healthy weight so come on and do this!
This is the PERFECT TEST for you to see how much you have recovered from you eating disorder - if you are happy to gain a LITTLE weight then you have stopped wanting to be “ underweight”
I am your height and 112 pounds because I have stopped weight training but I want to gain to 113 pounds of muscle if I can
As a personal trainer, I KNOW that you can gain weight AND have a nice, toned, and fit body shape - do abdominal exercises every day or every second day, STRENGTH train 2 - 3 times a week - I will give you my email and send you exercises if you like!, and keep your body moving for 30 - 60 minutes a day.
If you USE your muscles regularly, they will become toned as you gain weight - YOU DO NTO HAVE TO GAIN PURE FAT! There are easily, practical exercises you can do regularly that will give you the best body shape you can get
I have been anorexic and I KNOW that it IS possible to gain weight AND turn that extra weight into muscle that looks great - you will NOT accumulate lumps of fat if you are sensible and keep active like I have said.
IT IS hard to fit all that extra food in, so email me and I will tell you EXACTLY how I managed to fit the extra food in what I gained weight.
Please TRY HARDER. You only have one life, and you CAN do this, it is only a little extra weight, you HAVE tried but not hard enough, if you have 1800 - 2000 calories a day for 6 months and STILL do not gain weight, then add a little more, and if your weight does not budge then fair enough but at least TRY.
MY EMAIL IS:
rlmwalters@bigpond.com.auLet me know if you have trouble reaching it
Your story sounds SO similar to what I have gone through, you DO have a good attitude towards food, it is GREAT that you try to only eat when hungry, stop when full, and try not to obsess about food.
WE ARE NOT SAYING you are not naturally slim and are destined to be “ average’ or “ large” we are saying to at least TRY!
There are obese people who eat healthy and feel “ fine” but they actively try to LOOSE weight to be within a healthier weight range, YOUR NO DIFFERENT - you a are little too underweight and eat healthy, but that does not mean you should not try harder to gain a little weight for health reasons.
personaltrainer87-
i read this and had 2 vegan mock duck wraps instead of one for dinner. haha.
i guess i can atleast try to squeeze at least a little more calories in my day where i can.
it get so pricey to buy enough food to gain but i'll try a little extra.
i would love you to send me the exercises.
p.s. i had to delete my e-mail from this post but you can just send it to me through CC (as a message) as well.
I have sent you an email with a strength routine that I want you to do 2 - 3 times a week!
You only have a little bit of weight to gain, aiming for 110 is not that far, let me know when you get my email please!
How much fibre should I eat per day?
