my weight is jumping around....

Quote  |  Reply

Hey all, it seems like I've run in to a tiny problem. Lately I've been exercising a lot, and so I've been eating a tad more to make sure I'm not burning too many calories. Problem with that is, just the other day I was 139 lbs, an all time low for me, and today I was 144.4!!! I really didn't eat that much! Just an extra granola bar after exercising. What made my weight jump?! I'm not PMS-ing, and I'm not doing anything out of the ordinary, except I have added a more vigorous exercise to my routine. WHATS GOING ON!!??

stats:

Female, 20 yrs., weight: 144  :(

Actually, this just happened to me last week. I started my C25k workouts and my weight jumped up 2-3 pounds, stayed that way for about a week and half......then all of a sudden went down by 6! I think it was water weight kept in my muscles after using them so vigorously. It will come off....and you are supposed to eat more after working harder! Just make sure your deficit isn't more than 1000. BTW how tall are you? If you are tall them 144 is a good weight for you and you could just be gaining muscle and toning, just a thought. Good luck!

Hey Shuber,

Yeah that used to happen to me too, just think of it as the fluctuating 5. I was moving between my low of 138 to my high of 143. When you are changing your workouts, metabolism, sleep, nutrition, etc. it will happen. I eat the same thing everyday for the past 20 days (with maybe a slight different thing thrown in every 3-5 days and then back to normal) and my weight finally stabilized at 137. Remember that even the littlest things make a difference. It's been hot here in Cali lately and I know the heat makes my bod hold onto water so I weighed 138.6 this morning (plus I did the sauna last night and that makes me retain water too).

Experiment with a diet you can live with for 10 days to test this theory. Eat the exact same thing (regardless of workout/sleep/etc), and drink the same things every day for 10 days straight and your weight will stay locked at a good weight (usually on the lower scale of things). Plus you will find you crave for less food... consistency really helps when dieting bc your body knows what to expect and doesn't get hungry for more.

You may just be gaining muscle. If you've been working out a lot and doing weight-training type exercises, you having probably just gained muscle and haven't gotten around to losing the fat yet. Muscle weighs more than fat, so what happens is you start exercising and gain muscle, so it seems like you are gaining weight, but then all of a sudden you go down a lot and from there on out you basically just lose weight. It's awesome. Just keep doing what you're doing. Exercise is never a bad thing.

Just watch what you eat and keep up the cardio and you'll keep losing.

Unless you can psychologically handle the crazy fluctuations in weight you really shouldn't weigh yourself more than once a week. I weigh myself 10+ times a day and it is wild at the different readings I get.

to leslie157, I am only five foot one, so 144 is a little high for me. i wish i was about 5 inches taller because then rock climbing would be a tad easier and i would be at a comfortable weight. but we can't always get what we want.

to systemp, I have noticed that at every change i get, i weigh myself, just because i am curious to see how my weight fluctuates during the day. last night, i weighed myself after eating dinner and i was 146, and this morning i weighed myself right when i woke up and i was 144.4. crazy. but i like to see the differences through the day.

wish me luck, and hope that this sudden jump in weight isn't perm!

Do you use the weight log on this site? If you don't, since you are weighing yourself every day anyway, you should start using it. Log your weight every day. Once you log your daily weight, immediately forget about it. It is virtually meaningless. What you need to pay attention to is the trend (green line). This gives you a more accurate picture of what is happening with your weight. Your daily weight can and does fluctuate 5 pounds or more a day. The trend takes into account daily fluctuations in your weight by using the average for your last 10 weigh ins. If the trend line is going down, you are losing weight. If it is going up, you are gaining weight. It's that simple.
