i started weight lifting a little over a year ago, pretty hard core weight lifting, im an athlete so i am lifting to get stronger and improve performance. i know that muscle weighs more than fat, but for anyone else out there, about how much weight did you gain when you started within the first year or so? im just curious. i am 5'10" last year i weighed around 140 and now i weigh about 153.  i did gain a lot of muscle and it is noticable, but i know it wasn't all muscle that i gained lol.  i was just curious as to what others experienced.

I've been weight lifting with a trainer for about a year.  I think you could have gained 13 in additional muscle easily.  Although be careful that you didn't gain to much in inches...switching out soft and underdeveloped muscle  for firm toned muscle has helped me loose 3-4 inches while keeping the same weight.  I wasn't in good shape to start with like you so my exchange was for fat...it takes up more space.  Once you get the bulk it should help you perform better stronger and burn more too.

the thing with me is that before i started lifting i didn't have much fat, i've actually gained inches in muscle, instead of losing inches.

You should notice fat loss and muscle gain. What can happen is that you loose fat, gain muscle but don't actually loose weight. You may gain. How do your clothes fit? Did you take measurements before and after. That helps. Don't worry so much about weight. Go by how you feel, how you look, how your clothes fit and so on.

Muscle does not weigh more than fat. Weight is weight but there is a difference in volume, mass, space it takes up and so on. Read more here http://health.learninginfo.org/weight-lifting -program2.htm
