weight loss buddies
anyone wanna be weight loss buddies? and what's the best way to lose the weight? how many calories should i be having a day? how much excercise? (age 14, 5'2") =) anybody wanna start a group? i think it would be cool!
Did you use the tools on this site to enter your frame size and lifestyle? It will take that and you height and weight and give you a goal weight and how many calories you need to consume. I think I've read here that a teenager needs at least 1500 calories a day and more if they exercise. Try the tools, it's very cool.
The tools on CC are aimed more at adults than teenagers. As you're 14, you're better off using this calculator designed for teens: http://www.bcm.edu/cnrc/bodycomp/bmiz2.html
This calculator suggests you need 1840 calories a day when inactive. Shoe1200 is right in that you shouldn't go under 1500 calories, as you are a teenager and still growing. Don't go under this number, and don't be tempted to cut to less. People should only ever eat under the generally advised limit if told to by a doctor, and this usually only applies to people who have had gastric band surgery or severe illness or are SEVERELY overweight - and you don't fit any of those criteria. Heh. :B I personally know the damage eating too little can cause, so pleasepleaseplease don't go under 1500. [:
Ready for some maths?
If you wanted to lose 1lb a week, you would need to make a deficit of 500 calories a day as there are 3500 calories in a pound - 250 of this can be done through exercise and 250 through reducing your calorie intake. 250 calories off of 1840 would leave you with an intake of 1590 calories. I would round that to 1600, in fairness.
Are you used to exercising? If you're a beginner to it, start by taking a thirty minute walk at your own pace and work it up. Brisk walking is very good exercise as is, and you get to take in scenery and enjoy fresh air too. :D Resistance training is also as important as cardio, and helps encourage healthy muscle building as well as fat loss. I'm no expert on suitable routines for a 14-year-old, though, so you might want to ask for advice on exercise in the Fitness forum. :]
Aim for a balance of carbohydrates, lean proteins, healthy fats such as omega-3s, dairy and fruit and veg, but remember - you are still a teenager! It's no fun if you don't live life a little, so remember to treat yourself sometimes. [: It's really good fun to make your own healthy and filling meals (and desserts!) too. Eat 5-6 times a day if you can - two or three snacks, and your three main meals - and don't skip breakfast! :D It starts your metabolism running and keeps you running too.
A good breakfast can be a bowl of oatmeal made with milk, with some fruit chopped on top or with some berries and a few nuts. That gives you fibre, healthy fats if you opt for the nuts, calcium from the dairy, one of your servings of fruit AND slow release energy from the oats. :] Plus it's REALLY tasty. (I am an oatmeal addict. :P)
I wish you the best of luck with your weight loss - 120lbs at your height is a very sensible goal!
i'll be your buddy [:
i'm 5'3, 134 pounds, and i'm aiming for around 120. oh and i just turned 15 a couple weeks ago.
