Weight Loss and Developing an Older Appearance

Quote  |  Reply

I'm 33 years old, ONLY 33, and I'm beginning to look much older. Around my eyes have developed some serious wrinkles. My neck (around the double chin area) has as well. I've lost 30 pounds so far and am getting a bit worried. If I'm already starting to look this much older by losing only 30 pounds, will I look like I should be using a walker by the time I lose 80 more pounds??

I have an idea why it is happening. The fat that was under my skin basically filled it out. Now that the fat is decreasing, the skin on my face has nothing under it to hold it firm. I assume that given time, the skin will tighten up a little bit. But it worries me that I look like I'm 45 or so.

Have any of you dealt with this sort of thing? I'm currently using Olay night of olay firming cream with hopes that it will help keep my face healthy. Is this the best thing to do?

Thanks much

Oh my God I have totally noticed this too! It is so frustrating, because I know I look much better than I did 20 pounds ago, but the wrinkles around my eyes are tremendous. I am only 28! I drink a ton of water, take really great care of my skin, don't smoke, but jeez, I sware the lines around my eyes have doubled since I've started losing. weird, weird, weird. I've been using a firming cream too, but I'm hoping that this won't get any worse. I still have 30 pounds to go!

Glad to know I'm not the only one.

I've lost 30 lbs and haven't noticed this at all.  I think I look about 10 years younger due to the weight loss.  I still have another 10-20 to go (firmly in the healthy BMI range).  Perhaps it's because I started a daily lotion regime in my 20s.  I always put on oil of olay with a 15spf in the morning.  Most nights I use a night cream or the oil of olay without the spf.

I've read that foods high in AntiOxdants help Retard the Aging process.

We all surely FACE the same road.  What's funny is how in a few more years...

You will look back at 33 and think you look young.   I find there are years where

You age more than others.  All you can do is focus on eating healthy and enjoying

your journey.  Realizing every human faces getting older.  No escape.

blueberries come to mind as a good antioxidant.  Perhaps start popping those.

Since you're losing fat deposits under your skin, make sure you're getting enough healthy fats in your diet (sort of counter-intuitive when you're dieting.) Skin, hair and nails adore fats, and start to look saggy and dry without them. Nuts, seeds, eggs are all good sources for a little fat boost. As long as they fit into your calories for the day, you won't gain, and your skin might be happier? Anyway, that's what I've found (I am on a low-to-no fat diet for GI problems, and my skin is soooo spotty and dry. It wants egg yolks! And red meat! My nails are all brittle, too... stupid stomach.)

Do you tan at all? Because that seriously effects the look of skin, very quickly. Also, start eating more fats. Olive oils, nuts, avocado and the like.

Developing a morning regime of wash, moisturize, sunscreen then makeup and using a deep moisturizer in the evenings should help.

I have to say, I haven't noticed this effect at all. If anything I think I look younger than I am (38) because my clothes fit better and I'm more active. But my weight's still 'up there' a bit, and I've never smoked or been a habitual sunbather, which keeps your skin nicer. Try drinking lots of water to keep your skin hydrated, and make sure you have enough good oils in your diet. If your skin is just a little slack because of fat-loss it will shrink over time.

I wanted to add that if I'm faithful to Fish oil it really helps.  A healthy fat.

The only way to get Vit D #3 is by either sunshine (15min a day is great)

or fish oil.

Kajikit not sure u will see this but i can relate being just a few years older that all

I've noticed really is more of things dropping not wrinkles.  Like the cartoon

character Droopy.  Hello Folks.

Man I hope I dont get that because I like looking young O_O I have chubby cheeks to start out with (which I like btw) and asian people think I'm really young sometimes (when I wear make up I look obviously older). This lady at church thought I had an older sister because she saw me when i was wearing make up... LOL

I've never been one to get a lot of tanning in. I'm have a very light complexion. When we go swimming in the summer, I tend to burn to a crisp. Actually, now that I think about it, I've also gotten some rather interesting blemishes on the sides of my face this past summer. I think it might have something to do with my spending more time at the lake with the kiddies and ending up burned. I'll be sure to use sunscreen next year. I don't go to the tanning bed and never actively work on tanning. I'm fairly certain that I get lots of fat. I eat plenty of red meats and such. Though, I've never much worried about keeping myself moisturized. I never really had acne, so there wasn't much need in it. Now though, it seems I must take greater care!

As for makeup, I'd say it's been a good 8 to 9 months since I've even worn any. I'm not much one to use a lot of makeup. Arg, I hate the thought of always having to wear makeup! I remember my mother always getting up and putting on her makeup every morning. Hmm, seeing as I don't have an overly oily face, I may simply bathe my skin in tons of moisturizers. Babyoil, Oil of Olay, etc. It would probably be good for the rest of my body as well seeing as I'll be losing a ton of weight.

For morning make up I generally slather on a layer of oil of olay 15spf and then a clinique tinted moisturizer that's also 15spf.  That's it folks.  Now a good make up job can make you look about 10 lbs lighter and 10 years younger (see my profile pic for proof).

I have that problem, too, when I lose weight my face looks worse before it gets better. Recently I purchased a Baby Quasar (no sales pitch) --I'll be honest--it was expensive--nearly $500 to purchase but it is what some salons use now for phototherapy (infrared). It builds collagen and hyaluronen under the skin and is recommended by dermatologists. Quasar light therapy has been registered and accepted by the FDA. I use it on my neck and chin line and it has really firmed up that area. I'd rather buy one myself (guaranteed 5 years) than pay a salon or cosmetic surgeon for thermage, etc. to accomplish tightening.  You're young so anything should work on your skin. You're right, some skin will resorb, but not much.

I think you've got to be in it for the long haul. I'm 59 and am often asked how I've maintained the quality of my skin.  I jumped on Retin A in the late 1980s when it first showed clinical results and I've never regretted the investment in my skin.  I feel the same about phototherapy. Sure, you need to make it part of your routine a couple times a week but your skin is forever.  Most women put on makeup everyday and that doesn't even have lasting benefits!

I wish you well. Embarassed
