Weight loss from dieting only? no exercise?
So i suffered from binge eating for about 8 months now...and it's time for a change. However, i am overcoming bronchitis right now, so working out is hard right now, especially in this 20 degree weather(access to a gym hard as well)
I need to shrink the size of my stomach, because from all the binge eating, i NEVER feel full! So could I cut calories 1200-1300 and not exercise, and still lose weight? I would probably start exercising in a few weeks, but I need to lose weight, so will dieting alone work?
Yes, it will "work". I would suggest starting a fitness program as soon as you are able. It will greatly affect your "after" results. No one wants to be smaller but just as flabby.
You don't need to go to a gym to be active. Try to build more activity into your regular day.... parking further from destinations, using stairs instead of lifts, wrapping up warmly and taking a walk. It's better to be a little more active and lose weight on 1400-1500 cals a day than to slash your calories to 1200-1300 and feel miserable.
If you never feel full take a look at your food choices. Some foods are more satisfying in smaller amounts than others... Vegetables, for example are your best friend because they're filling, bulky, nutritious but quite low in calories. If you aim to get half a plateful of vegetables and salads at each meal, you instantly make the whole meal more filling. Wholegrains (wholemeal pasta, wholemeal bread, brown rice) take longer to digest than their refined or 'white' equivalents. Swapping those makes meals more satisfying for longer. Protein in the form of meat, fish, beans, eggs, nuts etc., is another way to keep hunger pangs at bay. At every meal, aim to get a portion of some kind of protein. Fat in small amounts also helps. Better food also boosts your immune system, making you less susceptible to viruses and infections.
Eating regularly helps hunger-pangs more than eating sporadically. Eat/snack at regular intervals so that you don't allow yourself to get starving hungry
The foods that will make you feel hungry quickly are refined carbohydrates (sugar and starches) and other highly processed foods, including most 'diet' products. If you keep these to a minimum you may find you can eat less without getting that nasty hollow feeling straight afterwards
I'm a recovering binge eater too. A couple of thoughts. If your main goal is to get your eating under control, then work on that first, and yes, eating less will work by itself. Sometimes trying to do too much at once can be frustrating and stressful and make you lapse back into back overeating. Especially if you don't naturally love to exercise.
My best advice is to count every single calorie religiously, and I mean every single one. Keep a journal and don't cheat. Be accurate. I am always so shocked at how quickly I get to 1200- I literally do not feel like I've eaten anything! It's getting a lot easier for me now that I've dropped a lot of weight, but don't just expect your appetite to magically disappear overnight. Have a coping mechanism in place for the hunger you may experience. Allowing myself unlimited portions of (non starchy) vegetables was key for me because I still had my calories under control, but still had a little bit of a crutch to lean on (the psychological need to have as MUCH of something as I want). Eventually, you feel better and don't need so much, and can just have proper portions of everything, including veg, but it takes a while. Just work on portion control and feeling satisfied within your calorie limit.
Once you start feeling better about your control, then think about adding exercise if you want to, but again, start slow and work up to it. Don't make yourself suffer if you know you're going to hate it. I started with just basic walking and it actually helped me get my appetite further under control- that's something else to think about.
I lost 30 lbs by eating 1500 calories a day without additional exercise. I did however, up my activity by choosing the stairs instead of elevator, for example. However, although I lost the weight and feel great, I am flabby and do have extra wrinkly skin in places. I would look 100 times better had I toned up and worked out a bit during the weight loss. It can be done but it is much better for you to increase your activity level and workout a bit. And like gi-jane said, it doesn't have to mean going to a gym.
hey sea,
if you want to "shrink your stomach" do it simple (I do this too bc it's nice to keep a good sugar level): eat every hour at the same exact time. Calculate out your day's worth of cals (for me 1300) and divide it by the number of hours you'll be awake that day. Eat the same exact amount of cals each hour for 72 hours less sleep. I love the way I feel after the 3rd day... cleaner, leaner, and much more "stable". I totally feel like crap eating 3 meals or heaven forbid less, a day. I find that protein bars and shakes really help me reach my goals as I can break them in half and eat one half now, 2nd half an hour later, and so forth...
If you cannot do every hour meals, then split it into 2 or 3 hours @ 200 or 300 cals each, whatever works!!
How can I reduce body fat without running?
I can see on the back end that your current Body Mass Index (BMI) is 19.1, which is within the healthy weight range albeit on the low end... Read more
