Weight loss and lack of periods!

Quote  |  Reply

Hey! I have lost maybe 6kg in 5 months (I went from about 64 to 58 and am now pretty much at my ideal weight), I was wondering is this enough to cause my periods to stop? I am pretty sure that I am not pregnant and was just wondering if weight loss is likely to be the cause. 6kg doesn't sound a lot but I guess it is almost 10% of my original body weight. Thanks very much!

My periods been a little messed up since I started losing weight but I've still had it.  A day or two late, a day early...and believe me, I could tell you the HOUR I was going to get my period before, I was so regular.

I would do a pregnancy test just to make sure, that will get one thing off your list of possibilities.  If you are not pregnant, I would go to the doctor.

Here's my story, I hope it helps.  Mine have been totally jacked since I lost about 20% of my body weight over about 9 months last year.  Prior to that, they were consistent.  I was off and on, a couple of weeks late one month, a week late the next month, skip, back to a couple of weeks late, and then they just stopped coming.  When I hit 3 months in a row, I went to the Dr. and she totally disregarded the weight loss and said that I have PCOS.  Although all of the testing for that came back totally within the normal range AND I have no other symptoms!  I repeatedly asked her about the weight loss, but she said that since I am at a healthy weight, it must definitely be PCOS.  I brought up my exercise which is a pretty strenuous 6 days a week of lifting and running, and she also disregarded that since I'm at a healthy weight.  She did give me a prescription for pills to take that brought it back, at least for that month.  She told me to take them when I have skipped 3 months in a row, since it is not healthy to have that build up.  That is fine for me because I don't want to conceive, but if I did, I would have to take fertility drugs, etc.  I still don't buy that I have PCOS- I got the hydrostatic bodyfat testing shortly after all of that and found that I am at 19% bodyfat, which is a solid 3% below ideal for my age.  I think it's that.

Yeah I am the same actually - I have missed three months in a row. Thank you very much for sharing your story - it was really useful to hear. I think I will go and see my doctor soon and see what she says. Thank you! Has this happened to anyone else?

how tall are you?  if you are a very tall woman with a small body frame, you might have lost too much body weight which can alter your hormone balance and actually stop you from having periods.  as much as this sounds like a good thing, it's actually your body telling you that something is definitely not right and needs to be fixed.  if you look at the whole evolution thing (if you believe in that), us women were built to reproduce and in order to do that (unfortunately) we have to have a period every month.

6kg is a big loss (congrats!) but over a 5 month period is also a very healthy length of time to lose that weight.  if you lost 6kg in a month and you aren't obese, then you'd probably have to worry.

definitely see your doctor tho because it might be related to too much exercise or drastic weight loss (two common causes of skipping periods).

I've lost about 35lbs in 6 months, i have seen my pretty normal cycles interupted. I was 8 days late this time, 5 days last time.  I have to mark it down now where before i was pretty regular, give or take a day depending on stress.   On the flip side, i have very little discomfort now where before i had a miserable week before and during.   I still have a lot to lose, and am not working out more than 4 times a week and it's moderate activitly. good idea to get checked for PCOS though, a frined of mine has it and also lost a bunch of weight ( 70lbs in a year) her cycle was messed up too.  Congrats on the healthy weight loss.

Not having your period is a sign of a health issue, no matter which way you slice it. So you need to talk to your doctor. It's quite possible your "ideal" weight is not ideal for your body, and you are eating too little to have normal, healthy body functions. This is one of the things that happens in the conservation mode; a non-essential function such as normal periods is adversely affected. I hope things turn out ok and you figure out what's going on.

Thankyou very much for all the replies - very much appreciated. Am going to the doctors today so will hopefully get it sorted! :-)
