Weight Loss why trying to conceive

Quote  |  Reply

I am 31 yrs old, 5'4'' female. Have been eating healthy since 12/31/2007. I started CC at a wieght of 146 lbs am down to 136 in around 6 weeks. This has been acahieved by a combination of portion control, GM ( General Motors ) diet which i did 3 rounds of and vigorous workouts in the GYm.

Since I am also trying to conceive and this isnt happening, 4 of the 2 months I tried i was on CC/GM/working out, I am wondering if I am doing something too drastic.

I think a weight loss of 10 lbs in 6 weeks seems fine and not too sudden. Any thoughts??

First, you may want to talk about this with your ob-gyn for any input or advice that she/he may have.

Second, how is your nutrition? Are you getting a good balance of protein, fats and carbs? Have you noticed any change in your menstrual cycle? Sometimes dieting can mess up menstrual cycles and I would think that would interfere with someone TTC.

Third, you may want to ask TTC-type questions in the Parenting forum, I bet there are plenty of people in there with lots of experience. (Don't repost this question there, just ask one of the Moderators to move this thread, if you want.)

Fourth, maybe dieting right now isn't your best bet ... maybe you could switch your focus to maintaining and exercising/toning? Just a thought .... ask your doc.

Thanks Christa. Actually I have  a 5 yr old daughter and during her time I put on close to 35 lbs. So this time I wanted to shed some weight before I get pregnant so that i dont end up like i did last time. I dont drink any coffee, am a tea drinker.

Soc_Puppet, I guess my nutrition is fine, I am a vegetarian, have lots of greens and whole grains. My menstrual cycle has been fine, though from the earlier 5 day it has now gone down to 3.5. I guess I will ask the moderator to move the thread to the parenting forum. Thanks again.

Hiya! :-)

I too am trying to conceive whilst losing weight/getting healthy. My idea is that I should make my body as 'baby ready' as I can and that includes shedding a few stone, cutting out the alcohol and giving up caffeine (headaches for a week but now ok). I think you're right to shed some pounds before conception as it gives you a good start..well done you! We forget how many babies come into this world by mistake and the fact that you are planning before he/she is here is commendable.

I have more weight to lose than you and have only just started, so it was nice to see your post...gave me some motivation that I'm not the only one.

Good luck honey

A big thing to make sure you try to do when you are trying to get pregnant is take a folic acid supplament (it's amazing how many birth defects this can help prevent) Also 4 months isn't two incredibly long to try to conceive...I tried for 2 years before getting pregnant with my second but if you are concerned talk with your obgyn about it. I think as long as you are makeing sure you are getting enough calories and up them as soon as you get pregnant it shouldn't be  a problem.
