Weight loss / Working out / Calorie Counting

I'm new here and I wanted to get the opinions of more experienced people.  I'm a 23-year-old male, and I have a very large body type (6'6" and 240 lbs).  I'm extremely muscular (just not toned at all) and I've never been fat in my life, but after this past school semester, I've really noticed that I've gained a lot of weight in my gut/stomach.  Since December, I've begun to work out and exercise frequently, and I've also been watching my diet.  I'd like to lose 25-30 lbs, but still retain my muscular (and hopefully toned) structure.  What do you think will be the result of keeping a constant calorie deficit?  Will this help me lose the weight I'd like, or will it prohibit me from making gains with my working out routine?  Please help!

My husband is in the same boat, he is muscular but had developed a little too much tummy for his tastes.  He eased up on the weight lifting and added more cardio.  He has been running on the treadmill and doing the elliptical machine.  He still does some weights, but that has become a secondary part of his routine.  ONce he has lost the belly fat, then he will pick up the weights more aggressively again.  He didn't really change his eating habits other than watching his portions.

With this combination, he was able to maintain muscle mass(although it did decrease some, no doubt) and lose the belly weight...although he isn't quite to his goal yet.

So, I would suggest watching your portions and picking up on the cardio.  Belly/gut fat is going to be hard to lose without doing some cardio.  It took my husband about a year of ongoing portion control and weight lifting before he realized the gut wasn't going anywhere without some cardio.

Good luck!

Men pretty much have it easier when it comes to losing their gut.  Like mrsjbreen's husband, my boyfriend had a good gut going last winter and without consciously trying he lost probably 40 lbs.  What he DID do was ride his bike like a wild man!  If he wasn't riding one of his on or off road bikes, he was riding one on the trainer.  I'm not an expert but it seems to me that guys can lose weight by upping their cardio and trying to watch portions.  That means, if you usually eat an entire pizza in one sitting, maybe only eat 1/2 or a quarter (must be nice).  I wouldn't even worry about religiously counting calories like us girls have to.  Good luck with your wieght loss.
