It is normal for a person to fluctuate up to and sometimes greater than 5lbs in a day for any reason.

I should also add: if you're not eating enough for your height, gender, age, weight, and activity level, this can also result in gains after an extended period of undereating. Aka, starvation mode. So double check you're eating enough, no greater deficit than 1000 from your total BMR.
EDIT: Thus, it's much smarter to weigh in once a week under the same conditions and take your progress based on that, instead of every morning.
If it helps any, two days ago, I weighed in the morning 130lbs, in the evening 137, this morning 128... I try not to get affected, it makes me realise how arbitary the no. on the scale really is!
Your body will retain water based on what kind of food you ate that day. So you might have taken in the same amount of calories but the types of food were different.
Steer clear of non-fibrous carbohydrates such as sugar, bread and potato products and try to replace them with vegetable alternatives.
Also...I try to weigh myself only once a month...everyday becomes obsessive and will effect how you look at your day which in turn will effect how you eat and drink.
Concentrate on eating right and getting some exercise in and not on the numbers...check back at a much later date...if a month is too far away for you....check back in two weeks.
if you must weigh yourself do it first thing in the morning, before you eat. my weight always is a few pounds higher at the end of the day than at the beginning. i prefer to look at the flattering number. also for some reason it's higher after a workout.. i have no idea why, someone explained it to me once but i forget the physiology behind it. the end-of-the-day weight just discourages me, and probably needlessly because i think its usually just water weight or bloat.
I was aware that weight can fluctuate 5lbs at any given time. However, I went from 136 to 140, and now I've been at 140 for about a week now. I like to check my weight frequently, not because I'm obsessive, but because I like to see what affects my weight. Like if I drink a large glass of water, I'll step on the scale afterwards to see the difference. I think it's interesting, I'm not being obsessive. Thus I posted this, because there was no major difference in my diet that would make my weight spike like that. I'm def confused. I eat between 1300-1350 cals per day. On days when I rock climb, I eat more. I also found, through much trial and error, that if I don't check the scale at least 3 days per week, my weight loss efforts go to pot, really. I know this from experience. So what about the sudden jump in weight? It's been a week, and nothing's changed.
Is my sodium intake too low?
You have nothing to worry about because sodium deficiency is extremely rare. In fact, there is not even an recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA... Read more
