Weightloss and saggy skin

Quote  |  Reply

I'm aiming to lose about 60 lbs, but I'm worried about having saggy skin. My plan to prevent it is to:

-lose fairly slowly (2-3 lbs/week)

-taking a multivitamin/fish oil supplement/vitamin e pill everyday

-moisturizing everyday with either cocoa butter oil or Aveeno lotion

-toning my muscles at the same time

-drinking LOTS of water

Will this help at all?

Not necessarily, I think age and the condition of your skin before hand probably plays a bigger part.  I have lost 50 pounds really slowly - over 5 months and have been exercising and have some saggy looking skin - its not really obvious par in particular poses but its still there and hubby who has more to loose and is 5 years younger than me is showing the signs of having heaps of it, despite all best attempts and doing it the right way.

My mom always told me that the younger you are, the easier it is for your skin to tighten up.  I'm not sure if that's just a myth or if it's true, but if you are young, I really do think your skin will have an easier time.

It does sound like you're doing everything right as far as your diet goes and the cocoa butter really helps a lot with stretch marks and I've even noticed that it works well on skin firming to be honest.

Drinking a lot of water is also great, if keeps your body hydrated and I also have experienced that the more water I drink, the smoother my skin and hair is.

Thanks for the replies, I'm 18 so I don't know if that's young or not in terms of skin elasticity lol

I asked this question, too, a while back.  I think because you are young, eventually any saggy skin you have will eventually conform to your new body.  Don't be discouraged, because time is definitely on your side.  My being an old dude has made it so the one place my saggy skin shows up is when I am sitting down.  But, otherwise, standing up it already has sort of conformed to my tight stomach.  It never will, alas, be the way I would like it.

A lot of it depends on how long you've been overweight and how overweight you are. I lost a lot of weight at 18 and had some loose skin on my stomach and under my arms, but not as much as I would have expected. I'll probably have a bit more now, since my skin stretched more from gaining the weight back. I have no idea how long it takes to snap back, but I imagine it's a while if it does happen.

I agree with Antiferret. Whether your skin becomes saggy or not depends on how long you have been overweight. My boyfriend became overweight when he was around 12 and didnt begin to loose weight until he was 18 almost 19. He has lost 86lbs over the past year and a half. Although he lost it gradually he has quite a bit of excess skin. He even started lifting weights heavily and has gained tons of muscle. The skin is still there. Someday he will get it removed because it bothers him.

Another example is my mom. She was overweight most of her life. Then 7 years ago she had gastric bypass surgery. She lost about 120lbs altogether. She has a lot of saggy, excess skin. There really isn't anything you can do about it, unless you consider plastic surgery.

I guess it depends on each individual person. Good luck to you and you weight loss! :)

I lost over 100 pounds and you can barely tell unless you watch me walk with shorts on.  I still have baggy skin around my knees... I lost slowly, I'm 25 yrs old, take fish oil, and drank only water. I also have been heavy since pre-teen years.  The only thing I didn't do is enough excercise, and I think that is the most important.  GOOD LUCK

I have lost 70lbs and have very little saggy skin so far anyway

I dont smoke now but did smoke for 22 years..

I am 40 years old and I rarely moisturize (except my arms as they get so dry)

I do drink a lot of water every day and get reg exercise.

Every person is different, I wish you luck :)

It's also genetic.  The things you're doing should help a lot, but there are other factors.

My family seems to have skin  that doesn't snap back very well - after pregnancies, for example, our stomachs are never quite the same -  I  gained 25-30 lbs with each of my kids.  But I know people who gained 60 lbs with pregnancy, lost it all very quickly, and had perfect stomachs again with no signs of sagging.  I did NOT win the genetic lottery on this one.

That said, I'd rather still lose the weight.  If I end up with too much saggy skin a year or so after I hit my goal weight (sometimes it takes extra time for it to tighten, so don't worry too soon), I'll think about having it removed.
