Weights before/after cardio? And for how long?
When I originally lost 20 pounds 2 years ago, remembering my dieting strategy is a little fuzzy because all I can remember doing is eating better but still eating regular meals with family. The break point I know for a fact was that I suddenly went from doing nothing to walking on a treadmill for 1 hour a day at least 6 days a week and lifted weights for at least 20 minutes after that. Now as im trying to lose the 5 I put back on, my trainer says weights first and cardio last so I do bout ½ hour weights then ½ cardio. My question is has anyone had success doing this method of working out? Something tells me my old way would work again as it did before. What do you think? Do u personally get more results lifting weights first or doing something like an hours worth of cardio and like ½ of weights?
That's the way most long-term success stories are, actually - strength training has a higher priority than cardio for a dieter. You can keep the weights and skip the endurance training entirely and you'll still see results orders of magnitude better than if you skipped strength training and kept the endurance training.
Oh, yes, by the way: This doesn't mean "don't do endurance training", it means "strength training has a higher priority if you're strapped for time, but once you get your lifting in you can do as much endurance training as you've got the time for".
What you do first in a workout is related to what your performance goals are - if you're training for fat loss, you lift first then do endurance training. If you're training for endurance performance or sprint speed, you train that first and then do assisance work in the weight room.
Right now it sounds like your training goal is to lose body fat more than it's running a faster 10K or 100m sprint, so for you, the best order of workout elements is strength training, then endurance.
When doing weights and cardio on the same day, I always do weights first. It's impt that all of your energy and strength is optimal and not depleted from cardio..bc that will lead to bad form and may-jah injury!
