I use a pair of general exercise gloves without fingers, and I also use them for softball and cycling. I remember reading somewhere that it's not such a good idea because the bar is made bigger in your hands as a result, but hey, I don't like getting calluses.

I use the fingerless weight lifting gloves with integrated wrist wraps.  I'm the same way--keeps me from getting bad calluses.  When I start to get 'em anyway, usually at the top of my palm near my fingers, I know it's time to replace them.  I buy the el cheapos anyway.  I get about 8 months out of 'em.

yep i use em too. It helps with grip, esp on a heavy session when your palms can get a bit sweaty.

hmmm, wrist wraps. sounds interesting. my wrist can some times get quite sore especially do this rffl program.

i was thinking about getting some before, but i didn't look like i have enough muscle to justify using them in the gym. i know i know, stupid reason. but now that i have some muscle i might just get them.

EDIT: eee gad, my grammar, wtf was i on when i wrote the above!!!

I wear mine on occassions. Haven't really worn them in months though.  I've worked out with elbow cushions due to tennis elbow and don't really see any difference between weight gloves or batting gloves pro ball players use for a better grip and protection

Love them for pushing lifts, but pulldowns and rows hurt with them on. I definately had to get some as my bench and military presses progressed.

thanks everyone. i'll weight till i am in the states where things are cheaper. then i'll have something to look forward to using in the gym when i get back from my holidays.

I don't use any gloves. I like to be sure of my grip, and I'm more certain of it when I can feel the bar directly under my fingers. I don't mind having calluses (I already have some from when I used to row for the crew team, and in much of the same places as lifting causes them to be). It's mostly a matter of preference.

I have been avoiding the ones with the wrist straps and hooks and such because I think it's important to build those parts of my body up equally with the rest. Unless I had an injury, I wouldn't want to lose the benefit of working everything equally. The only issue is that some of my pulling exercises have advanced to the point that the weights are too heavy for my grip, and in those cases, I am considering getting hooks or straps, but only for those few exercises.

I resisted buying them because I didn't think I was lifting heavy enough to need them. My husband felt that I should be wearing them to increase safety while lifting, so I bought them.

I LOVE THEM!

I can grip the bar more easily and it's much more comfortable to hold heavier dumbbells for lunges and step-ups and such - my hands don't feel like the weight combined with the texture of the bar is going to tear the flesh from my palm :)

im no fan of exercise gloves, a callas or w.e. isnt gonna kill u, using gloves is stupid, my teacher tells us not to use them its cheating urself, theres no excuse to use gloves

Okay, I'll bite.  What reason does your teacher give that proves gloves cause you to cheat yourself?  I don't FEEL like a cheater...

i think melkor should chime in here w/the open sores he got on his hands from 400lb rack pulls.  sounds pretty lethal to me!

Well, they're mostly healed now, but the pain did keep me from training the way I wanted to for a few sessions - which is not a preferred outcome. And gloves, straps, hooks or other implements have their place depending on your goal - if your goal is to not rip the skin off your fingers while lifting I don't see how using gloves would be counterproductive.

Besides, using gloves can be a little like using a fat bar - it adds a new dimension to your grip training by changing the position of your hands and fingers from the regular lift. At times, a couple millimeters' difference is all you need to stimulate your muscles differently and see new developement.

Idk its not natural, u dont get the feel that u should get with the weights
