And now just go ahead and make that first post!
I'll start.
Hi, my name is HK, I've been here on this site for about 2 and some years. I'm no newbie to dieting. I had previously lost 50 lbs before when in college, but put it all back on.
I yo-yo dieted for a while, mostly due to my own bad relationship with stress, but I'm back. :)
I started this site, as I said, two years back. :) I was actually just looking for calorie information for a cup of sunflower seeds, but.. ended up finding the community and.. sorta got stuck. I've found a great community here and alot of friends. Now I extend the chance for a great community and new friends to you.
Why am I here? Because SOMEONE needed to start a male's group ;) No, seriously, because Men do tend to face some slightly different challenges than women. Plus, as a genuine minority on the site, sometimes it's just good to find copatriots. :)
What else? I'm married now. Just got married a couple months back to the love of my life. I live with my wife and our four fuzzy felines of doom. I'm a FEMA Engineer and Regional Team Lead. Uh... and I'm a very very silly guy. :)
Welcome to the Health Conscious Men's group. :)
Hi, my name's - not even in your alphabet. You can call me Truman like HK does.
I was the chunky kid in school up until I discovered weight lifting and martial arts at 16, and I wish I could say I never looked back, but after leaving the army and going to college I bounced around at about 10-20lbs overweight, depending on where I was with my on-again, off-again relationship with exercise.
Discovering Unix and Usenet in college didn't help with the sedentary.
Fast-forward through some messy personal stuff that left me on the couch scarfing down the antidepressants and chain smoking, I rediscovered hiking in fall 2006, kicked the smoking habit early spring of 2007, strength training in mid-2007 and calorie-count in August, and have more or less completely transformed my body and at least some parts of my life.
I'm still a nerd though, and my approach to health resembles my approach to everything - I want to know the optimal approach to everything ;)
hey all! My name's Nick.... joined CC about 2 months ago when i stumbled upon it looking for the calories for beets.....
always been overweight, as long as i can remember, finally hit when when i hurt my back at work, and spent a week on the couch that i realized that my weight was killing me. lost about 45lbs so far.... almost 1/2 way to my GW of 160-170 lbs.
as for myself, I'm an electronics engineering technologist, and spend a lot of my time in front of a computer, or hunched over some sort of electronics.
oh yeah, and I've been smoke free for about 6 years (1 - 1 1/2 pack a day) ...... been so long i often forget what an accomplishment that is.
Hello, my name is Brian. I've been on CC since early in 2007. I've been overweight most of my life, of which it's mostly due to poor eating choices.
I lost a bit of weight back in 2007, went from 241 down to 204, but then hurt my shoulder and bicep on a machine in the gym. That derailed me for the rest of 2007 and I went back to bad eating habits. I got back up to 225. I had my shoulder repaired surgically, then decided it was time to get back to what I had started in early 2007.
I'm down to 186 from 225 in January. I've done it with good eating habits and regular exercise. My job also doesn't allow me to get outside or move around. I'm a software designer for a major insurance company, thus lots of time in meetings and in front of a computer.
The change I'm making this time is removing all of my fat clothes from my house and give them to charity. Before, I would put them away, always knowing I could put them on again when I yo-yo'd up. This time the safety net is not there. I want to clean house and assure that I keep making healthy choices.
Howdy,
My name is Lem. I have never been a big guy. I am just making sure I watch my weight because of my family health history. (Diabetes, prostate issues. etc) I have a very sweet tooth and that doesn't help.
Joined CC early last year when looking for calories burned during aerobics.
I am a yo-yo exerciser and dieter. Mostly because I am a photographer and I shoot weddings with lots lots of rich food. I found however that's not how I gain weight,. I happens when I sit for a week or two editing the photos. I'm also a corporate trainer who develops training half the day and in the classroom the other half. So sitting with the occasional stand is what I do.
I am currently doing a variation of the 3 hour diet and Weight watchers. When I did this in the past (6 months ago) I lost 5 pounds in a week and plateued 2 pounds away from my goal weight for a while.
I shoot photos for fun and am a music collector since I used to shoot for a radio station. I am your classic nerd too. Comics, video games, movies and computers are passions behind my wife and Kids.
My name is Mike. Just found caloriecount.com and decided it can't hurt. Have tried several different diets over the years and weight has gone between 170 lbs to a high of 259 lbs. I am currently at 219 and would like to get down to the 170 range again. I walk regularly, although right now I am dealing with plantar fascitis in my right foot and have just recently, after a 2 month rest, started walking again. I was walking 25 plus miles a week and doing bike riding, kayaking etc in between the walks. Still try to get 75 miles in on the bike, which is a good workout around here, because of the hills. So it all comes down to what goes in my mouth. Intellectually I know what I should be eating, but that isn't always what happens.
Don't try for perfection - in practice there's no discernible difference between 90% and 100% adherence to a strict diet plan, except if you're 90% perfect and schedule a couple of pizza slices or some other cheat meal once or twice a week you don't go out of your mind with restriction and thus you're more likely to stick to the diet over the long haul :)
I concur with melkor.
If you set yourself up expecting perfection out of yourself, you're eventually going to disappoint yourself and feel upset and disappointed that you couldn't measure up. Trust me. I'm a perfectionist myself.
All you can do is your best. Sometimes that means 95% right. Sometimes it means 50%. It's your best. This is a long term struggle for most of us. It took us a long time to put on the weight and it'll take a long time to get it off. A couple of bad days won't destroy your previous efforts UNLESS you let it.
Welcome, everyone. :)
Hi, my name is John. My fathers name is Thor so I am son of Thor. cool huh.
1. History with weight loss: I had a recent roller coaster with
weight loss, had a heart attack last year, had surgery with
complications. Lost about 40 lbs right after the surgery. Starting to
get it back on.
2. History with Calorie Count: Started using this
in June 08. I tried dietwatch, thought it was too expensive for what CC
does for free.
3. Reason for joining this group: CC original said I
could reach a goal weight by April 09, it is now saying aug 09 after my
recent gain. I would like to get down below 170 again, hopefully by
April 09
4. Some interesting details about yourself,
such as
your job, your family, your pets and your interests: I am married with kids and work for a Dod Aerospace firm.
Hey, my name is Ian.
I've always been slighty overweight but never as I am right now. I started partying a lil' bit too much when I finished high school 6 years ago and the weight just pilled over and over.
I joined CC about a month ago and only had good experience with it. I especially enjoy the ''engineering'' point of view of CC. Calculing what it's getting in and getting out!
I joined this group because I think female and male have different problems with weight loss and the few men on this site should have a good place to talk!
Some interesting facts... heeee... I'm a mechanical engineering student, I live in Québec and I speak french!
That's all folks!
Hi,
Name is Dave, started CC July 29th the day I turned 44, SW 269, CW 251, TW 200ish.
1. History with weight loss: Did not have a weight issue until the past 8 or so years when it started to creep up on me. I figured as a lot of people do, eat less, you lose weight. Yep you do, but it comes back.
2. History with Calorie Count: I started with CC this past July 29th when i turned 44, never did it before, never saw a real reason to. Thought it was silly, boy was I wrong!
3. Reason for joining this group: Get new ideas, see what is working for others in my age and weight. Help others that are in the same boat as I.
4. Some interesting details about yourself, such as your job, your family, your pets and your interests:
I am a stay at home dad, mom loves her job as a travel nurse, and I have a 15 yr old wrestler, football, baseball and track son. He loves the sports but sees no reason to workout. I have him taking vitamins each day, drinking protein shakes and hopefully he will see my results from weight training and join me. We have 3 cats and 2 dogs. We are all huge MMA fans, and when the weight gets reasonable, would like to take a class with my son, we will see.
I turned 44 in July and the wife left for Cal for 13 weeks on her job assinment. I Thought what a good time to make some major changes in my life, for the better.
Started out walking 2 miles or so a day, wow what a trip that was! Try and move 269 pounds at a good clip without dieing! But made it through and then would do about 15 min on the bow flex with some free weights. Have since cut out the walking (just in the past 1 1/2 weeks), and focusing on the weight training and have gotten myself up to 45-60min a day. Once I can cut some weight, I will once again do the walking. I seem to see more results with the weights than walking at this point.
One thing that CC has really helped me with is determining what foods are best for me to drop the fat. Currently my body seems to be working best on a higher protein, lower carb consumption. The fat intake really does not seem to be an issue at this time.
I take a multitude of supplements each day and drink a ton of water. Upwards of 160 OZ. Love the fish, shrimp, fruits, veggies, oatmeal. Really thought I would have a hard time with giving up white bread and pasta, but I have not. I do miss pizza though! That will be something I will treat myself to when I hit the 220ish mark. I do not miss the "boxed" meals at all!! When i start reading them i get sick, gave all that crap to the neighbor kid!
Love to golf, fish, spent time with my wonderful bride of 20 years and hangout with son and his friends.
Unfortunately I still smoke, but that will change shortly. Not a heavy smoker, about 10-12 cigs a day. But more than I need.
This is mainly for me, selfish I know. However, everyone will reap the benifits of a healthier husband and dad. Have more endurance (if you get the drift!), make myself and the wife feel like we are 20ish again.
I see the scale moving, but for the life of me the dam fat around the mid section just is not going away. Where I am losing the weight is beyond me. I will have to take another set of pictures and compare to the first few weeks.
Well that is all about me for now, hope to get some ideas, and maybe help others as well in the journey to a better self and better life. I do not see this as a "Diet", I see it as a life style change and mind set.
Dave
My name is C. H.
I've had a weight problem all my life and decided, after a trip to Africa, to fix it and change my life style.
Earlier in life, I usually participated in sports including football, archery, golf, hunting and tennis. My family had ranches so I road horses quite a bit and learned to dance at an early age. I took up heavy lifting in my forties and got up to about 280. After I quit, I didn't lose the weight, just the strength. I'm now 67.
In October I weighed 247. I joined CC in the spring at 227 and I now weigh 178.
I am a fine art appraiser so my work is sedentary. I now walk on the beach in the morning and work out about three or four days a week. It's good to feel the workouts again.
I like music, travel, film, good food and fine wine. I eat healthy and use CC as a great tool.
Hi, I'm Eric and I'm fat...but not for much longer.
I have been fat most of my life. I have dieted in the past and actually went down from 400 to 245 over a period of a year and a half back in 1999, but was injured on the job and simply became lazy. Then I got married and had two girls who are very active and I need to lose the weight again.
Currently I am at 348 and my goal is to get to 220 and stay there. Thankfully I have a very supportive wife and family who are ready to see me shed the pounds as well.
I joined this group simply because I find it helpful to know that other people are facing some of the same things I am. It is a help. I also blog about how I am doing and you can find the blog here.
I look forward to interacting with this group.
Eric
i joined CC on December 17th, after reading a book on diabetes. began loosing weight on the 22nd, mostly by eaing more veggies and fruit, and portion control. then i started swimming, and dropped the booze on the 27th.
i'm up to 3000 yards swimming in 65 minutes now, and dropped 17 pounds so far - 23 to go by may, maybe more. i cant believe it, just paying alot more attention to detail, keeping active, and set mind to do it. i'm 53 years old, started at 250 pounds, probably should be under 200 by end of year. if i waited any longer, would be much harder to do. somehow body is reacting right. i want to qualify for usms national swim championship in may, and have put this off long enough
sure i feel hungry sometimes, but that certainly is not the worse thing in the world now, isnt it?
the journals and info i've seen on this site are great
cheers
New to group, but not CC. I'm about 20 lbs heavier than I need to be, and I would like to loose that weight.
I always seem to get down a few pounds and I then end up gaining it back. I want to get to 170, currently at 193 because of the holidays.
I was at 183 this summer after a 75 mile hiking trek. Another week of that and I would have been at my goal weight, but my heels and feet were done after 75, plus that is all we planned to do.
I'm an aeronautical engineer so I have my share of work stress and being trapped behind a computer that seem to sabotage my efforts to exercise and loose weight.
Seems that plenty of us here have the same trouble.
Hi, I've been lurking on CC for years. I diet, lose, then go back to bad habits and gain. Here I am again. This summer I achieved a new personal best (not the good kind) of 247 lbs. I also was noticed I had high blood pressure for the first time in my life. Finally I noticed my heart would start racing for no reason at all...sitting at my desk, al of a sudden my heart would be racing (like I just walked up a bunch of stairs), not out of breath just the heart beat....weird....
I was not exercising, occasionally camping and hiking but not more that once a month. I decided to make a change in October. Had the BP and heart stuff checked with the Doc first, he said exercise would be my best friend. I started exercising Oct. 1. Strength 3 times a week, aerobic 2 times. So, I'm down 15 lbs, and lost 2-3 inches around the middle. I have 45 lbs to go.
My biggest challenge is that I am a foodie, I like to cook, I like to eat, and I have a huge sweet tooth that needs to be kept under control. But I know it, now I just have to do it
1. History with weight loss: My weight's been up and down pretty much my entire life. Recently doing much better due to being on the right diet and getting more exercise.
2. History with Calorie Count: First joined a couple years ago, got busy and slacked off - now back and working seriously on tracking my food intake.
3. Reason for joining this group: Men seem to be a minority on the site, just looking to get a different perspective.
4. Some interesting details about yourself,
such as
your job, your family, your pets and your interests: I'm an information professional, married for just over 2 years, no pets...interests are reading, football, and movies - but haven't had much time for anything but work and sleep lately.
Hi All,
I am 38 years old, 5'10". Two years ago I weighed 222 lbs. I was worried about my health, my cholesterol was high, I had a gut, I was always winded, and I didn't feel attractive to my wife, to anybody. I was even starting to have sexual dysfunction, you know, the hydraulics weren't always working. I had to do something.
So, I decided to radically change my diet. I was a huge red meat eater, liked candy, drank a lot of coffee, snacked late at night. What I did was start to discipline myself. Since I loved sweets, I started to eat a LOT of fruit and cut out the candy. I made my portions smaller, drink only water (sparkling) and I limit my coffee to two a day. I cut out most red meat, occasionally having a dinner of pot roast or beef stew. I eat mostly chicken and fish with different steamed veggies, and rice, rice, rice. I know everyone loves the no carb diets, but i have rice almost every day. The end result is that today I weigh 167 lbs. I am still going for 10 more pounds. I use an MMA workout routine 3-4 times a week, shadow-boxing, calisthenics, some weight training. I do this at home, no gym membership to pay for.
I didn't follow anyone's diet, I did what made sense to me, and ate the things that I like that i thought were healthy. If I wasn't sure of something, i Googled it. It has worked so far. I am happy with my progress, my wife and kids are happy for me, no more hydraulic problems, and i feel good about my appearence. I won't say it has been easy, I just think that if you are truly dedicated to do something, you will do it. It wasn't a momentous struggle, it seemed to happen very quickly, and i could see results pretty quickly, too. I'll keep checking in with you guys as i work toward my goal weight.
Thanks for listening...
Hello, KP here!
About three years ago I decided I had hit "maximum density" and was also looking middle age square in the eye. I decided I was not going to be a stereotypical middle age male- pot belly, 9 hours a day behind a desk, two drinks a night after work, falling asleep after dinner in an easy chair, driving an non descript four door sedan...
So I changed the pot belly part! (the addressing of the pot belly also mandated the addressing of the drinks and the easy chair) I started a running and free weight routine, started counting calories (I log everything thing that goes in me as well as every activity) and lost 50 pounds.
Now I'm trying to improve my running and mountain biking skills by looking at food quality as well as calorie content and by maximizing my training.
I found this site while looking for calorie content of Waldorf salad or something....
Now I just need to keep the weight from coming back through complacency, and address the sedan part.
Hey all! I'm Michael. I have put on considerable weight since retiring from the Marine Corps and now it's time to pay the piper! So here's the nitty-gritty:
1. History with weight loss: Never had a problem...until now!
2. History with Calorie Count:Just joined...well, actually joined in '07...but fell off the wagon.
3. Reason for joining this group: No reason in particular except...IT'S GREAT TO BE A MAN!
4. Some interesting details about yourself, such as your job, your family, your pets and your interests: I am a Christ follower and I currently work as a college/young adult ministry director at my church but have had such interesting jobs in the past such as...Marine, truck driver, taxi driver, doughnut maker, fence installer, cook, corrections officer, security officer to name a few. I am married with 5 sons, 1 grandson, and 1 granddaughter. I love college football, golf, and collect ballcaps and coffee mugs.
