Hello. I am 5 mos. pregnant with my first child. I believe that good nutrition is the cornerstone to good health down the road. I joined this group to learn tips about childrens nutrition. I know that little ones can be fickle eaters and it is our job to make sure that make good choices.
I would like to make my own baby food when that time comes. Has anyone done this? If so, do you have any tips?
Thank you.
Hello. I am a 25 year old mother of 2 beautiful girls, soon to be 5 and 3. My 5 year old has some health issues that no one has been able to help me with. These symptoms manifest themselves in much the same way as meningitis; minus the purple spots. She has gotten this sort of thing four times now, all in incriments of 3 months. The Dr.'s keep telling me that she just has a low threshold for this kind of thing. The worst time was in December of 07, when we took her to the hospital because she was not responding to either me or my husband and spiked a rather high fever of around 105 degrees. They performed a spinal tap on her and a urine test...the whole works, it all came back clean. Does anyone know may be causing these symptoms?
As for me, I have only just joined caloriecount. This comes after the last five years of off and on with Weight Watchers. That program worked everytime i joined, but the problem was that I had to keep joining.....again and again and again. I have finally figured out that exercising is the complete, 100% key to losing the weight and keeping it off. In the past 5 years, I have gone from 220lbs on a 5'6" frame, down to my current weight of 150lbs. I hope that with the help of this sight and all my efforts into exercising, I can achieve my ulitimate goal of 135lbs.
I hope to hear from someone soon. For now, Good luck to all.

I actually made my own baby food for a period of time when my son was little. He is now 2. The advice that I can give you is to make A LOT of it at one time. Put the extra in ice cube holders so they easily pop out and freeze them. I also just blended whatever it was that the rest of the family ate. He is a pretty good eater now so good luck. Also remember that children need to be offered things up to 10 times before they decide they like something or not. One thing I warn against is giving your child whatever they want because you know they will eat it. This is how picky eaters are born. When they are older they won't starve if they miss a meal or two. Good luck and congrats!
Hi, my name is Aimee, and I became a single mom in February. This is all pretty new to me, but I after I stumbled across this website in a parenting magazine, I thought it sounded like something motivational to try. I was severely underweight when I first found out I was pregnant (and I was already almost 2 months along), so my doctor had me gain a lot of excess weight. It was nice to be able to eat what I wanted to, when I wanted to, and I got to try a lot of new foods in the process. I really wasn't into eating junk food much until after I got pregnant. But now that I've given birth and my body is mostly back to normal, I really want to lose this weight. I thought it'd be easier since I really like to eat salad, but I've been having a hard time. So I'm hoping that being a part of this group, as well as this website, will be a very good motivator.
I'm a pretty busy mom, so I haven't actually had the time to start with that yet. But since my daughter is already eating step 2 foods, it's been suggested to me numerous times that I buy a baby food grinder. I don't know if you have access to a Babies'R'Us, but you might look online if they don't have it where you're at. You might even find one on Ebay. But my best advice is that when you do get to that point, especially if you're working/going to school full time, make big batches every time you grind up food, and invest in small plastic containers so that you can freeze single servings. That way, you only thaw out a few at a time, and you'll have them ready for when you need them.
have you checked your daughters tonsils?sounds similar to what hapened to a friend and it was her tonsils
Ok, I have been trying to get these last few pounds off for, well let's just say my youngest is 2 1/2!.... So 2 1/2 years I guess! I hover at the 5 lbs to go mark...then I gain 2, lose 2 for ever! That's my history with weight loss. I have been trying to use the calorie counter for about a year and a half, but when the diets and counting give me NO RESULTS I tend to give up for a few months at a time. The strange thing is that when I am "off" of a diet I don;t gain. I just hover, no matter what I do. Joined the group hoping that I could get some new ideas, and maybe stick with it past the plateau this time. I'm a busy mom of 2... 4 and 2 1/2 years old. I am an artist so I work from home most of the time. Just moved to the BURBS, so I am looking forward to riding my bike alot for excersize (as soon as I get one!)
One thing I do with my 6-month old, I try to make it a regular routine to go on a long walk with her. I do it on Sunday (since there's really nothing else to do anyway except go to church), and I just push her in the stroller, and walk to either the nearby gas station, the shopping center, or the park. Or just...walk. Also, one thing I've found that worked for me and my best friend in the past was investing in a video game called Dance Dance Revolution. It's a lot of fun, and the more you play it, the more calories you burn. I love it!!! The Wii version is the best because you can make a profile where you put in your weight, and after a song, depending on how well you did, it will tell you how many calories you burned versus the goal they want you to shoot for. But the Wii version is pretty expensive too, so if you are on a lower budget, go after the PS2 one, if memory serves right, that's the cheapest one.
Also, since fall is approaching, the weather is going to start getting colder. Remember, anything you do outside in cold weather, you'll burn more calories than the same exact actions in warm weather. So yeah, it is going to be harder to lose weight in the summer time.
Hello!!! I'm Katie, I'm a 20 year old mother of a beautiful 4 month old daughter. I'm trying to lose the pregnancy weight and finding it difficult to do with an infant and the demands of running a household.
I feel your pain. I thought it would be easy enough for me, but it hasn't been. My daughter is 6 months old, and I don't feel much progress. It's definitely an emotional ordeal to expect your body back, and suddenly realize that it's not going to happen any time soon. But I love to go shopping, so that's one way I try to burn some of these calories, by not giving myself a time limit, and always pushing a stroller when I go to burn more calories. Plus, my daughter really enjoys looking at all of the different objects and lights (especially the Halloween stuff since stores are already putting up their displays).
My daughter is 10.5 months old. Even though I lost a lot of weight, I have a lot more to lose because I ate poorly and gained so much during the pregnancy. I used to be very active, now I stay at home with her and find it difficult to work out. I walk 3 miles while pushing the stroller every chance I get. Sometimes I jump rope, climb up and down the stairs, or workout to a dance dvd. Unfortunately, the main problem is that I don't do anything consistently. I joined this website in August and have made more weight loss progress.
Srporter, I fed my daughter exclusively breastmilk for the first 5 months. After that I started adding baby cereal and oatmeal to her milk. I added steamed vegetables and fresh fruit to her diet when she was 6 months. I pureed the food I prepared and froze it. Along with the table food, I continued to give her breast milk until she was 8 months then I switched to formula. I added some pastas and began giving her homemade rice and oatmeal. I still puree her food (she doesn't have teeth), but not with the same fine texture. She's learning how to gum everything and eat finger foods like banana and peach slices. She is very healthy and has made each food transition well. If I had to do it all over again, I would not change a thing.
Ironically, my desire to feed her only the best has taught me more about what I should eat. I hope this helps.

Wow, I really admire you for how you got your daughter started on solids. I've been a full time student with an almost full time job, and a full time single mother on top of that. So the Gerber baby food jars have been really convenient for me. But I have really been trying (on my weekends) to give my baby different REAL foods with different textures. Just yesterday I discovered she LOVES strawberry fig newtons. Her eyes have never been that wide and happy. LOL
Wow! Akitty62, you are really busy. I admire you for juggling so much. Have you tried reusing those Gerber baby food jars? I used several of those (and Beechnut jars) to freeze some of her healthy favorites for later meals. I know you got a kick out of seeing her enjoy that newton!
Hello everyone! I am a 23yo Mom of a new baby boy and a loving wife to my hubby who is deloyed to Iraq right now. I am living the life of a single mom for the next 8 months. Ashton my son, is only a month old today. I have just joined calorie count and so far really like this website. I have lost 33lbs (my pregnancy weight plus a few lbs) since I had my baby and now I am working on the rest. I am a stay at home mom and plan to be for the first few years of my childs life. I have never been around a lot of children and want to have somewhere where I can talk to other parents, get some good advice and hopefully make some friends.
Goodluck to everyone!
Hi to everyone. I have just had my third child 7 months ago. I was doing really well with the weight loss until I started on birth control again. I put on 15lbs in less then 2 weeks and am working very hard to loss it. Most of the time my weight chooses it's happy spot and stays there. I have just joined calorie counter because I need help to remember to watch closly what I eat. I have joined a bunch of classes for exercise. I'm feeling good but I need to drop 35lbs to reach my goal now.
Hey there, I am 38 years old and I have been with Calorie Count for about a month and a half. About a month and a half after I started this "DIET" experience. The only other time in my life that I have dieted was in high school after I had gained weight, I lost 40 lbs in 2 months my senior year by eating very healthy, and getting crazy with weight lifting(2-3 hours a day 6 days a week.) I kept the weight under control until the past 4 years or so. I started gaining a little after the big 30 came and went, then I got remarried and changed from a job where I moved heavy boxes all day every day to a mostly sedentary job and to top it all off, I had another baby (my other 2 are 16 & 18). I have had some good success with the diet and excercise but it sure isn't nearly as easy as when I was a teenager!!!!!!! I think that I am plateauing but I will push through as long as it takes. I really am beginning to like my body again now that I have lost 22lbs! I have muscles in my tush, thats wonderful. My skinny jeans are now to loose! Yea! On the way!
Hi, I am a 40 year new again mom. I have a 19, 18 and now 5month old. wow starting over, but i am having the time of my life, things are so different now that i am prepared and patient. i did pretty well during my pregnacy only gaining 20lbs. i was overweight to start so the 20 wasn't too bad. i was able to lose all 20 since i've had the baby so now i am just working losing the rest, i have 67lbs to go. i just found this site and i really like that you can talk to people that are going thru the same things you are and have other things in commom besides just losing weight. i am in the process of planning our wedding for next year, nothing big but i would love to be smaller by the time we tie the knot. i am trying to get him to join so that we can do this together. i have a busy life, working fulltime with a major communication company, i travel since i have 3 offices, i go to school, taking on line classes this time, a junior in college trying to finish before my teenagers do :),manage the house that consist of my fiance, my 2 teenage daughters, my 5month son, 2 old cats and 1 playful dog, its a lot but i wouldn't trade any of it in. Finding time to really do me is the hardest thing right now but i will figure it out so that i can reach my goals. just have to stay focused and get support as i go along.
Purpleldy, congratulations on the new baby! You have quite the balancing act. Good luck with it all!
