Hi all,

They call me Tru here. I'm Danish living in the Netherlands - your typical yo-yo history of weight loss. I joined CC about 3 weeks ago and it works! This is the way I'll be able to lose the 15-22 kilo's I need to lose. I've lost about 3 so far.Laughing

I'm almost 45, married for 20 years, 2 girls of 16 and almost 10yo. Sociologist, the last 2,5 years working as a mental coach for athletes, especially talented teenagers including pro's-to-be. I also do a bit of personal coaching. Helping people help themselves is the basic theme of my work - I've not been too good at helping myself though. I'm told it's an often seen pattern with "helpers"...

But: CC is a great tool, fitting neatly into my philosophy of helping oneself.

Interests besides sports, psychology and things connected to that: learning, handy-work (knitting and stuff), working out new methods & materials for helping poeple help themselves, finding connections between different areas. I don't get around to being very athletic myself, I want to change that though; I used te be a reasonable badminton-player, played in the national competition till not that long ago, so I'll definitaly be making a come back before longWink

Hi Everybody,

I’m Mary Hartley, the group moderator.  I’ll be checking in every day, Monday through Friday.  Thanks, Tru, for introducing yourself.  Let’s all do the same.  I’ll start:

1. History with weight loss:
I haven’t dieted in 40 years!  (Thank God.)  I was a bit overweight as a teen in the day of Twiggy (a problem even back then!) and I would try to diet, but, when I was about 24 , I figured out how to eat and I lost 20 pounds over 2 years without dieting.  My weight has been in the same range ever since.  I would say, above all, I don’t eat big portions, I eat a lot of vegetables and I’m an intuitive eater.

2. History with Calorie Count:
I have been working for Calorie Count since October 2006 when I was hired as a consultant to do work at home.  In January 2008, a full-time position was created for me. I love to be able to offer high-quality nutrition services that are free!

3. Reason for joining this group:
I cannot lie – Igor started this group and made me moderator – but it was a good idea!  I am blown away by how many helping professionals are on this site!

4. Some interesting details about yourself, such as your job, your family, your pets and your interests:
I moved to NYC in January and it’s difficult to get established in a new place, especially when you’re older.  But I am making an effort because I finally realized there was no way around it.  (Gee, I wasn’t rescued again.) I am single and my 25 year-old daughter lives close by in Brooklyn.  I don’t have any pets because I am away from my apartment a lot, but I do have a garden and have to care for my plants.  I love the outdoors, socializing, needle work, and indy movies.  My friends and family live in Rhode Island.

What is everybody looking for?

HI

This looks like a great group to help tweak my weight loss/maintenance plan!  This will be my 4th group to post on and I think that should cover it.  I am excited about these new groups.  My history with weight loss is an ALWAYS!  I'm 45 now and have had to always watch my weight.  during my 20s and 30s I had kept it pretty much in check around 5 - 10lbs but on 5"4' it shows and I don't like the constant worry about it.  I got married for the second time 7 years ago and I looked and felt great at 131.  I have a strong body so that weight worked for me.  So after MARRIAGE and turning 40 and alot of big personal life changes like having to sell our big beautiful home in CA and move to AZ to downsize I started to put on weight and my usual working out and eating right wasn't cutting it.  First I was hanging around 142 then I got to 150! and then... at the college (I'm finally finishing my AA degree and going into the nursing program here)we we're weighing ourselves for the nursing program and infront of a slim 21 year old I got on the scale and it said 156!!!! I went into shock/disbelief and embarassement.  So NOW I just finished doing the lemonade fast/cleanse(maple syrup, lemon, cayenne) for 10 days and lost 5lbs on that plus I had lost 5lbs previous so now I am at 146 which I want to keep off and get back down to 131.  I am really freaked out about gaining weight especially at my age IT IS A LOT HARDER!  You have to be deligent.  I'm just looking at it as a way of life now and I'm hoping to keep the momentum and structure of CC going as I believe it is a great tool which I have used on and off for the last year or so.  It's the consistency and I know that it's the DOING.  I'm also scared of losing my focus/energy as classes start again next week and I am going to start a new job in a couple of weeks.  That is the real challenge for me when I start getting over worked and stressed.  So back to the questions.  My goal is to lose a lb a week which is extremely slow but I am hoping it will be a life change to keep it off so I am focusing on the way I live not on the losing the weight part that seems to be less burdensome to me.  I have 2 pugs: Mercedes and Chevy, 1 German Shepherd: Talus, one adopted stray black cat: Notte (night in Italian) 1 husband and 1 daughter 17!! SENIOR I am a very proud mom! :)  I am looking forward to the support and advice to help me adjust my diet and exercise program to make it work for me.  THANK YOU!! :)

I'm 5 ft 5 in and I weigh around 136 and am 22. I Go to the gym about 5 to 6 times a week. Three of those times I do and hour of weights plus at least 30 cardio, the other days I do all cardio for about an hour or so. I burn like 400-800 depending on the day and I try and keep my calories to 1500. My carb intake is always around 40% and the protein count is always higher than the fat count. I try and limit my carbs to under 150 a day. I eat pretty healthy, though I do let myself have like either some yogurt covered raisins or a few malt balls a day. I have been in this plateau for months and I don't know what i am doing wrong and it is so frustrating!

hi, I'm Kay and I just found this site today.  I have lost 45 pounds in the last 4 months, but have started to see the weight loss back off a bit.  So I decided to try another avenue and this site seemed to fit the bill.  I am short - 5'1" with very long legs and a short squatty body - so every extra pound shows.  I would like to lose 40 more pounds and then keep it off.  I have lost 85 pounds in the past, but was then no longer digilent with the diet and lo and behold back came every pound, and much quicker that when I lost !!!!  that just seems so unfair.

I am a busy woman who travels frequently for my job, and temptation is always staring me in the face, hopefully the support of the group will help.  For those of you who work in a hospital setting you know how much food is always lying around - families are always bringing in cookies, candy and other tempting snacks for a job well done.  I don't always have the will power to abstain expecially on a hectic day when I haven't had time for lunch, or on days that I am especially stressed.  I always think one little piece won't hurt - but then I end up feeling bad and angry at myself for giving into temptation.

As i said, I am hopeful that this site will provided support and good feedback, for I really want to lose the weight and keep it off.  The calorie counter today was awesome,I thought first before eating - I wanted to get a good grade.  I think that if I use this tool faithfully it will help keep me on track

Hi, I'm Sandra.

1. History with weight loss:

As a teen, I was slightly overweight ("pleasantly plump," according to my Dad).

In college I slimmed down -- I was very active & without food around all the time it took no thought to slim down!

Married -- I gained weight because of the cooking I liked to do and a pencil-thin husband who could eat big breakfasts w/out gaining an ounce!

Then, two babies 7 years apart and 3 major moves led to weight gain -- mostly from isolation and insecurity, I think. When I started singing again in San Francisco, I lost 40#s. I have weighed between 185 and 200 pretty steadily for the past 20 years.

I joined Weight Watchers 2 or 3 times -- I couldn't get into the group thing; and was in the trial program, "Freedom from Fat" @ Kaiser Permanente Portland, OR  for 3 months -- I did very well until we went from a small group forum to a much larger one.

A period of unremitting stress for 7 - 10 years, involving 3 moves and numerous personal issues had me chugging Coke Classic (Diet Coke I considered poison! go figure! ;->) and landed me with diabetes. That was 8 years ago.

3 years after diagnosis, I decided to return to college and get RD status: I wanted to become a CDE. I was very successful in school...then, my husband was killed in an accident.

This was 2 years ago. I'm now ready to pursue the career, but being overweight, I realize to help other people I need to get real with myself and make this hurdle of getting to a better weight -- and a healthier lifestyle!

2. History with Calorie Count:

Actually, I was doing a job search and conducting research when I came across this site just last night. I really liked it and thought I'd give it a try. It looks sensible.

3. Reason for joining this group:

I will admit some reservations -- my pride is somewhat at stake -- but, I need a group of people who are down deep not so different from me. It's important for me to be vulnerable, just as the patients I hope to help will be vulnerable when they come to me. I'm a pretty authentic person and want to be more honest with myself about what I'm doing to keep this weight on. I'm ready to jump those obstacles.

4. Some interesting details about yourself, such as your job, your family, your pets and your interests:

In the past, I sang classical vocal. Later, I worked as an executive assistant for developers in CA.

At 53, I decided to go back for a new degree in dietetics. Half way through my internship I was widowed. Right now, I'm finishing a major renovation of my house and am looking for an entry level job as an RD.

My daughters are 34 and 27. The elder lives in southern CA and studies & teaches music;. The younger lives near me (Lexington, KY) and works in the horse industry.

I have two dogs, Toby -- a shepherd mix -- and Bitsy -- a border collie, as well as two short-haired cats, J.C. (Julius Caesar) and Isabelle.

I am very interested in woodworking and gardening. I like hiking and long walks.

For now, I think that hits about all the major points.

Hi Everybody-

My name is Diane.  I have been using CC on and off for about a year.  When I use it an am mindful of what I'm putting in my mouth things continue in a healthy manner because it requires me to be accountable and I like to get "A"s when I don't use it, I don't pay attention.

My weight has been between 150 and 210 from 15 on. I am 5'7". I look and feel good in size 10 clothes at about 155. I am fairly muscular. I went to WW as a young adult and they suggested a goal weight of 135 which sounded insane to me (I weighed 132 when I was 11) so I never went back.

In 1986 when I was 29 I stopped drinking and gained 30 pounds in year (210 is my highest weight) and a friend started going to OA and I joined her. I liked it and no one was pushy about weights. I also went to a doctor because I realized one of my problems was I really didn't have any idea how to feed myself! How do you become and adult and not know what is right to eat, I thought? It was shocking. The doc was decent and  as I was a vegetarian, gave me a diabetic diet to model good portions and type of foods to eat and it really helped me.

I started walking and then added dance aerobics and yoga and for the next 10 years was able to happily keep my weight between 155 and 160 through 2 moves, 3 job changes,  a marriage and a divorce.

Then I had a car accident in 2000 and totaled my car and set off a chain of problems with my low back and hip.  I have not been able to exercise consistently since then because of chronic issues with those joints (although I do teach yoga and believe I'd be on disability if it weren't for what I've learned teaching.) Add to that menopause.

Last fall I was 168. This summer after I ran an 18 day residential Yoga teacher training program and came home at 163. When I went to the doc for my annual 'poke and prod' I weighed 180. Ugh!!! I had gained 17 pounds between June 22nd and Sept 13th. Unbelievable. I knew I had gotten loose with the sweets and fats but I didn't think I' gone quite that wild.....

So now I am back on what I know works for me which is a revised Ayurvedic diet (pitta/vata). As many low GI fruits and all the veggies, whole grains and beans as I want and 5 servings of refined carb, "meat"/non-fat dairy and oils a day. I went for a bike ride and went dancing last week on top of teaching 3 classes and see immediate results without going stupid hungry. For me its about quality of food and exercise. Or at least it was before menopause. We'll see  what happens now.

For work I am a Yoga teacher/Yoga Therapist and do Ayurvedic consultations. I can't be advising people on how to feed themselves if I'm not doing it, now can I? I want to set a good example for my clients. I also train therapeutic Yoga  teachers/therapists and meditation facilitators and Ayurvedic wellness coaches and see clients and teach Eastern philosophy classes as an adjunct, and do the afternoon news at our area NPR affiliate.

I have a couple of cats that I adore. My partner is a sweet man from Holland who I have been with for about 4 years. He's a pharmacist. We travel a lot and generally have a good life. I want to keep it that way.

So, good to get to read what you all posted and get to know you all a bit. I hope I answered all the questions! :) Diane

Hi Everyone~

My name is Shelly.  I just started using Calorie Count in Sept. as a way to keep me on track.  Before I was writing everthing down in a notebook.  But this is so much easier.  As far as me...I started to lose my weight in Sept of 05.  And lost 60 lbs in 2 yrs.  But I gained back 15 of it.  As of right now I am down to my last 4 of that 15.  I am also trying to find a way to maintain once I've lost it.

I am an active 29 yo.  I walk my 8 and 5 yo to school everyday.  My 5 yo is a pm kindgartener so I walk 3 times a day.  I average about 40 mins a time.  Then I do sit-ups and push-ups at home.  I also play on a co-ed softball team with my hubby.  He is my motovation to be healthy...he's a US Marine.  So, he tries to give me pointers.  I guess that's where I got my push-ups & sit-ups from.

I'm hoping to get some ideas to lose/maintain...And meet others that are doing the same.

Hi Everyone!

My name is Kimberly and I have just been appointed the assistant moderator of this group! I am excited to see what kind of discussions we can have between the health professionals. I have always wanted the hear from other professionals and get good ideas from one another.

I am a Registered Dietitian and I live in rural Pennsylvania. I have one more semester of college left for my Master's degree in nutrition. I also teach college, which I absolutelyl ove! I have been with my husband for 9 years, although we were just married this October. I only have furry children and other pets. Having babies are soon in the works.

So you think since I have all this knowledge about nutrition I should be at a healthy weight? Well that is not so...I was throughout my childhood, but once I hit 21...forget about it. My peak was about 50 lbs overweight, and I am short so it really showed. After a few years, that was enough. I joined a gym and  learned so much about nutrition. I lost about 40 of those lbs. and in the process I loved all this nutrition information I learned and wanted to share it with the world!! So I went to college to be a dietitian.

But going to college and working took a toll on my weight again. I really hated not being able to exercise regularly. I gained those 40 lbs back within the 6 years of college. So here I am again...joined a gym, eating healthy again, and found this awesome website! I just joined calorie count on December 28th.

So I do understand the struggles of weight loss. And if I can be of assistance to anyone, please holler at me!

sugrplm,   Welcome to cc and to our group! I am an RD and CDE and am from PA also (Eastern). I went to Penn State for my BS and finished my MS at Univ of AL after I moved down to AL in 2003. Unfortunately, we have not had much new discussion in this group since I joined. Maybe together we can spawn some new threads! ;)

I think you will find calorie count, as i have,  to be a great place to share thoughts, struggles, information and to obtain as well as provide support in health and weight management.

Again, welcome! And I will add you as a friend if you don't mind and feel free to add me too! One of the best groups of girls that I correspond with on cc is "Bring Sexy Back"... Just click on my profile and you will see it listed in my posts. Join us if you want.  You sound like you would fit right in with us.

Thanks gddrdld for the welcome! It is nice to meet a fellow (former) Pennsylvanian, and then Alabama...what enticed you to move there? Of course I would prefer warmer weather so I don't blame you.

"Bring Sexy Back" ...hahaha...so true! I love that name, I will check it out. Nice to meet you on here!

sugrplm-   I decided to move to AL when I turned 30 (6 1/2 yrs ago) after coming down here to do an internship. Long story short- I am into horses and barrel racing and found that horses are cheaper down here, barrel racing is all year round and I could afford to buy the horse farm that i wanted down here. I also met a sexy cowboy that broke my heart 4 yrs later...  The weather is definately a big advantage to living down here as well.

Nice to meet you too!

Hi Everyone,

My highest weight has been 254. over the last 6 months I have semi fallen off the wagon.  I did lose 84 lbs and I have gained about 10 lbs back.    Currently I weigh about 182.

I started calorie-count over 3 years ago initially.  For some reason I was unable to log on with my previous user name.  Calorie count has really helped me and I attribute it to my past success.  I never used to exercise regularly.  I finally saw the light and i still have a membership at a local gym and I also love Pilates.  Pilates has really helped my back pain as well.  It seems as if the last 2 months my exercise has been slipping and it is time to get back on track!  Instead of my 2 times a week I need to get back on track to 4-5 times a week.

I feel having health counselors to turn to is really an excellent feature to the site.

I am happily married 44 years old.  We have 2 cats and no children ( I like them just not for me)  My husband and i love to travel and explore new places. We travel to Europe (Italy) usually every few years. We also love the beach and snorkeling.  The next trip is the the Mayan Riviera in May.  So I guess this is good motivation to get myself in gear! My husband and I both hold corporate jobs for the same company.

Nice to meet all of you!

Hi, I'm vshawn.

I weigh 175. I gained thirty pounds in the last year and a half - after I quit smoking.

I didn't necessarily eat more after I quit smoking.  I just ate whatever I wanted to in the past - that is, without consequence until I quit smoking.

At the same time, I went through a period of about a year where I got rides to and from work everyday. This took a toll on my energy and contibuted to my weight gain.

I live in Chicago - so a car is not a necessity.  I have the subway system to get around.  Mostly, I walked and biked everywhere.

Now, I'm back to walking and am trying to quit smoking (again).

Currently I'm eating about 200 calories every two hours (aproximately 8 times a day) in an attempt to nudge my metabolism from its sleep.

I love to cook, and eat a very healthy diet most of the time!  It's probably "Mediterranean" - olive oil, legumes, fish, whole wheat pasta, vegetables and loads of green tea.

But something is not working.  I always ate this way.

I want to lose weight to look better, yes, but also because diabetes runs in my family.  And because my father, who became overweight in middle age, recently died of colon cancer at the age of 68.

As well, my knees seem to be in pain a lot.  This weight makes me feel as though I am lumbering around.

I'm tall - but the reality is that I'm 13 pounds away from being obese.  People don't know I've gained a lot because of my height and the fact I hide it with my clothes.

For this reason, I have no support whatsoever.  People think I'm being ridiculous.

Hi Group,

I posted this first in the wrong place because I was so eager to get started

I work as a therapist and counsellor.  People often come to me with their weight issues.  I have had a weight problem since leaving school, which amounts to 36 years now.  Although 50 pounds overweight I am quite active and I do take care of what I eat.  I think this site will help me to be more knowledgeable about where the calories are coming from and how to gain more of a balance in my consumption.

So far so good.  I have already begun to lose the Christmas weight.  Once I get down to 168 lbs is when the real battle starts because I haven't been much under that in years.  I've been playing with my food and activity log.  I'm enjoying myself.

Right now off to the Gym for an hour.

Speak to you soon.

Jayzee

Hello!

My name is Suzanne and I have been overweight most of my life (I am 33 years old).  I am on a weight loss journey with 89lbs to go.  I have been a member of Calorie Count for awhile but had neglected it...I am back on track.

I am a Shiatsu Practitioner, Shiatsu is a pressure point massage based on Chinese Medicine principles.  Since beginning my practice I have become much more balanced physically and emotionally and am ready to commit to weight loss, both for myself and my clients.

I am 3 weeks in to a gym routine (3-4 days a week- combination weight training with a trainer, pilates and cardio) and for the first time I am LOVING it!  The energy it gives me and the strength increase is really beneficial to my massage work.  I have a supportive partner and a sweet dog always ready to help me exercise with a long walk!  I am truly excited for the change in me and it will be so different this time.

hi, i am shivananda nayak 70 years old from mumbai. My daughter promptly got me to join caloriecount to maintain my health. She stays one floor above me and she likes me to lead a hale and healthy senior citizen life. I retired as a banking professional. I am also actively involved in the stockmarket.   I maintain good weight about 71 kg for my 171 cm frame. Recently i did a senior citizen health check up and understood that i had higher levels of trigylceride and fasting blood sugar 122 mg/dl. I have joined caloriecount to enable me to bring down those levels to normal. In order to bring it to normal I have to eat a right diet and do exercise. The triglycerides is at 302 mg/dl, vldl is at 60 and ldl cholesterol is at 76.  The medical advice given to me after the checkup results are 1. strict diet control, 2. regular exercise, 3. repeat blood sugar level after 2 weeks. If still high start with OHA. So before taking next blood sugar level I would like to observe diet plan to bring down the levels. Please help me. Thank you.

I seem to be getting menopausel symptoms and also i suffer with depression, i am on medication for my depression, to which my weight seemed just to pile on, i went from a size 8 to a size 12 within a few months and feel very uncomfatable with my appearance as my clothes no longer seem to fit, i have changed the sizes i am now buying.. I am alittle less active than what i was but not a massive change no matter what i eat or drink the weight just seems to add itself. so i decided to give this a go as i dont want to get any bigger.I want back the energy i used to have and feel happier about myself.

Hi, I'm Holly. I'm 22 years old and have been "extremely overweight" for as long as I can remember. Last year, to a year and a half ago I was 40lbs lighter than my current weight and as of right now my goal is to be back there. My most feared concern is becoming diabetic. Both of my grandmother had it and I feel like sometimes I have symptoms of it. My family also has a history of kidney disease. My major concern with weight loss, is if I am doing it right. I feel so lost in all of my previous attempts, but this time I have a very good friend with me for the ride. She has been very supportive, helpful, and incredibly resourceful, which I appreciate so much. I just started dieting and working out again, and although my school schedule keeps me busy, I feel like I've done a pretty good job these last few days. I want to see results quickly, but like I said, I don't want to go about this the wrong way. I have been eating about 1200-1500 calories, and I'm not sure if this is sufficient for my body? Can anyone shed some light here so that way I know if this is ok, or if I am starving myself? I don't feel like I am, but I'm really not sure.
