And now just go ahead and make that first post!
I actually don't mind decaf -- and will drink it willingly. However, it has to be potable... And preferably with a little half and half.
I come from a family that you could say is predisposed to being fat. I had always controlled that through exercise: first soccer, then swimming, then running (with weights mixed in as I got older). But graduate school put a damper on my activity for a few years, and I ballooned! Now I am back in control and am feeling great. I joined CC at the end of May so that I could track calories in/out, and I have lost 19 lbs so far (down to 170). I'm targetting 135-145 (I have a swimmer's build--at 135, I was only 16% body fat) by the end of next May.
I joined this group because I love coffee. Duh.
I am fortunate to live in a small town with a lot of great coffee (Ithaca, NY). I brew with a Chemex. It's slow, but it's fabulous. And because the coffee does not get more and more bitter, it is fantastic for making iced coffee as well.
I drink my coffee black. I drink bad coffee with a little milk or half-and-half. Sugar in coffee is an abomination.
I'm 27. I am a mechanical engineer working in aerospace. I've been happily married to my high-school sweetheart for 2 years now. I like running, reading, and pretty much all things geeky.
I too am a coffee fanatic and I find that it has been helpful in curbing the desire to eat in the evenings. I am particular about my coffee though. I prefer to buy whole beans and grind it myself. I won't drink decaf unless there is absolutely no other option and even then I usually opt to do without. I prefer dark roasts. Some of my favorite coffees are French roast, Kona (but only the 100% Kona, not the 10% Kona blend that most places serve), Sumatran, and Guatemalan. I do like a few flavored coffees, like hazelnut and irish cream, but usually I mix them with espresso roast. If I can pour the coffee in a clear cup and see through it, it is too weak. Although I prefer hot coffee, I do also enjoy Vietnamese style iced coffee on occasion. Things I consider abominations:
1. Artificial sweeteners (Equal, Splenda, Sweet 'N Low, etc) in coffee.
2. Skim milk in coffee.
3. Instant coffee. (If I offer someone instant, it is a veiled insult.)
4. Instant decaf coffee. (If I offer someone instant decaf, they have seriously pissed me off.)
5. Instant coffee premixed with sugar and non-dairy creamer. (This is what they serve to coffee lovers in the lower circles of hell.)
I am curious if any of you have tried Gevalia or Boca Java and what you think of their coffees.
Well I never had a problem with weight until I hit 40 and then met my current honey. For a number of years I was always just slightly overweight, but I looked and felt good. Now I don't. I feel and look fat! I need to lose 50 to 60 pounds to be in a healthy BMI range. We're getting married next July and I want to look and feel better. My confidence level has been shot to hell lately.
I've only lost around 8 pounds since I joined in July. There's been some ups and downs. I was a member a while ago and decided to join up again because I'm also a nerd and prefer to do stuff online when I can. I'm also a working mom and was doing the single parenting gig for the last 7 years. Not an easy road to take, I wouldn't recommend it, out of hand.
I like coffee and think it gets an undeserved bad rap. The latest studies show that there's nothing wrong with coffee and in fact it has some health benefits. Of course you've got to moderate a bit as in all things. I can't believe so many people are working so hard to quit this liquid gold based on faulty research. Unless you have very specific health issues, there's nothing wrong with coffee. So for you coffee quiters out there (the group here has over 500 members) you get no applause from me. :)
So about me-- I mentioned I'm a single parent and am getting married next July. I've got a teenage son and a 9 year old girl. We've got 2 cats and a sweet little Chihuahua. I'm an aspiring writer but never wanted to be a starving artist so I go to work and push paper around all day. I sometimes ruffle people's feathers by correcting grammar and spelling errors, by talking about my left leaning political viewpoint and my heathen ways. Although I try to be nice too. Heh.
hello: I have always been heavy and even at my best a few dozen pounds over the "ideal"...(anyone else think that number is achievable?).
First real weight loss was using prescription meds. A scary thought in hindsight.
Second was a low carb diet (sugar busters) which allowed one binge per day. Also a bit insane.
Third try was WW, which really got me tracking consumption and paying more attention to PORTION SIZE.
Still early here at CC (7 lbs) but I like the ease of tracking online and the feedback and community.
I am committed to exercise several days a week for most of my adult life. At age 40 I completed a marathon.
I checked out the Coffee Hater group (Getting Over Coffee) thinking they had some facts that I was not aware of. I saw nothing to make me want to get over it.
Hey, I'm a coffee lover from Sweden that used to own my own coffee shop. Now I'm currently trying to find out how to open up my next place.
I've been overweight for ages. Just recently found out about cc and will give it a go. So far so good. :)
I read about the man asking about Gevalia. I used to demonstrate their products in shops over here some time ago. Since then my coffee taste has developed and I can honestly say I would NOT drink it if I had a choice to opt out. Reading about your tast makes me sure that you would not like it either. If you can get your hands on some coffee from Minas (Brasil) I think you'd love it much better since it is fullbodied and filled with taste.
Good Luck!
Hi everyone, I joined the group last week and wanted to introduce myself. My name is Alisea, I have been on CC since September 9 of this year.
All of my life I have fluctuated in weight, I would go from small to large off and on. I have 3 kids and am hoping that, that part of my life is over.
I am addicted to coffee big time. It makes me feel good and I am unable to function without it. I seriously have not gone without a cup in the last 7yrs, Usually its 3 cups in the morning then a latte in the afternoon, then 3 more cups around 7pm.
Everyone is always telling me I need to quit, so it is nice to have a group that supports me and what I want.
If anyone wants to talk or needs some support I'm only a click away! I'm pretty new at all of this, but one thing I know is life is a lot better when you have friends in it! Have a good week!~Leash~
Hi Everyone, I joined on the 18th of Jan and have lost 6.7 pounds so far. Here is the uk the daily recommended calorific allowance is less that what is stated here. 2200 for men. My intake is 1100 calories each day. I also get a bit hungry in the evening and self medicate with coffee to rid the feeling.
I love coffee and especially if it is flavoured. The Latte variety mmm Yum. However, they were the scurge of my weight gain. I only drink white coffee now and I think that this has really contributed to my weight loss.
I will still continue to seek out alternatives but have found none to get that syrupy latte fix.
Any ideas.
Im Jennie, just joined the site few days ago. This is my first time dieting.
1. History with weight loss: Grew up skinny and tall (I'm almost 6ft even) My dads is a chef, my soon to be hubby is a chef and I cook alot. After having kids, a divorce from abusive family, not the hubby, an auto accident that caused me back issues and living with a partner who had off eating hours and was a chef well all that caused me to gain 100 lbs over 8 years. Ive come to the conclusion it has to now go cause it is causing my back to get worse and i feel like crap all the time.
2. History with Calorie Count: none , first time
3. Reason for joining this group: I love my morning coffee don't want to let it go. Drink 1 16oz espresso with hazelnut creamer every morning.
4. Some interesting details about yourself, such as your job, your family, your pets and your interests: I'm 33 and after being out of school since I was 16 (got a g.e.d in job corp) and being an at home mom for 12 yrs I decided to go back to school and been going to college now for 3 quarters. Field I am going for is Event Planing/ Catering. (hoping econ comes around and allows me to pursue this field) I have 2 sons 11and 13. I'm engaged to my boyfriend of 9 yrs and set our date for next summer. Have a 1yrs old wiemerunner and 4 cats. I love making art of all kinds, gardening, hard rock, and video games. (kids got me hooked ^_^)
Hi,
My name is Leah. I've been on CC for about 2 or 3 weeks since a friend of mine, who I always thought was really beautiful and happened to also be quite big, seemed to shrink every time I saw her. She told me about CC and said you didn't have to give any thing up, that it was just about math and portion control. So I've been trying it and have lost 8 lbs.
Accept for a few years of being super active and super poor in college, I've always been about 30+ lbs over weight. I thought dieting was more mainstream BS about how everyone should fit a mould and buy more products so you can fit said moulds. Ever heard of "Riot not Diet?" Well, I was a believer in that. I wanted to spend more energy fighting "The Man" than counting calories. And I did, but I also drank a lot of beer, ate lots of fatty foods and instead of going to too many demonstrations, I did pirated radio shows where I got to sit on my ass.
Then I got sick. At age 32 I developed rhumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia. It got so bad I couldn't walk without crutches and my arms were in constant pain. The first steps to go to the bathroom in the morning were excruciating. The doctors here in Germany didn't know what Fibro was so they didn't treat me for it. For the RA, they gave me chemotherapy.
Long story short, my mother bought me a ticket to come home to Seattle and see her Fibro specialist (she and my aunt also have it) and sure enough I had it. Her neurologist treated me and in 2 weeks I was 50% better. After 1 year the RA was gone and I could work again.
I lost weight during that time because it hurt to eat, but of course it came back.
Now that I have my life back I'd like to see what it's like to be fit again. I like that you can still have the things you like on this program. I'm learning to just say no to the chocolate cake only because I don't want to add it up later and feel bad about myself. Thank god the coffee I like has so few calories! I used to love all the syrupy lattes, but trained myself out of it purely because I save so much money buying drip (quality not quantity. I'm snobby that way, plus instant gives me bellyaches) or straight up espresso. My real treat though is getting the dopio con panna. That's 2 shots of espresso topped with whipped cream. It's straight and to the point. I have that on my cheat day.
My other favorite is iced espresso with a litte soymilk and a bit of agave nectar. Yum.
I'm also a crafty person and have been buying ingredients to make coffee soap. The grounds are also supposed to be good for your skin. It just keeps getting better and better.
