Hello everyone! I'm Stevie. I've struggled with my weight since I quit the soccer team during my sophomore year of high school. I went from running 3-5 miles a day plus practice to nothing. It got to the point where a XL t-shirt was really tight and I'm only 5'5"! I lost most of what I had gained in college and was able to keep it off until recently when I discovered gluten free brownies at the grocery store and have become obsessed with potatoes in any form. I'm new to Calorie Count. Even though I was diagnosed as a celiac four years ago, still I have no idea what healthy dieting looks like being gluten free which is the main reason I joined the group. My interesting fact is that I am slowly (very slowly) working through watching all of the movies on the American Film Institute's Greatest Films of the 20th Century.
Hello,
My name is Kayse. After years of stomach problems I figured out last winter that a gluten free diet made life 100 times better! I have not had the test for celiac due to being a student and having a lack of health insurance. I am now living where health insurance is cheaper but I don't want to eat gluten for a month to take the test, I know I should but it sounds so horrible! Along with being gluten intolerant I am also a vegetarian which complicates things a bit. I have learned a lot about living overseas G-free and could give advice about g-free living in Asia and Africa. I have always been an athlete but recently I have been teaching and gone back to grad-school, both of which have helped me to put on weight. I am trying to live a healthy gluten free vegetarian lifestyle while getting back into shape!
1. History with weight loss:
I lost a significant amount of weight after the birth of my children. Then was in a severe car accident. I haven't had the strength or motivation to continue and regained my weight. In April, after feeling bad for months, I decided I'd better make a change. I'm down 20 lbs and have 15 more to go to get to my goal.

3. Reason for joining this group:
I have two children and a mother with celiac disease. We have a gluten-free lifestyle because of the kids. My children are younger in elementary school. My biggest complaint is when people hear about the gluten free diet they comment about how hard it is - my response is always, NO it isn't, but it is healthier.
4. Some interesting details about yourself, such as your job, your family, your pets and your interests:
I'm a self-proclaimed workaholic, in the legal field. I also own my own business. My Husband is in school administration. My kids go to private school for safety and educational reasons. My boss is a family member, extremely stressful to work for but wouldn't change a thing I love my job. I'm leary of standard medical care and prefer a more natural apporach first.
Hi everyone,
Once upon a time I could lose weight through diet and exercise. That was until I started have Chronic hives... Steroid treatments and other meds have really just made things worse. I've gained almost 100lbs since my problem first occurred a few years ago and a dr has yet been able to tell me the cause.
I've been with calorie count off and on for years now. Having some success between outbreaks, but getting frustrated with the weight gains that comes with my meds.
I am going gluten free after reading many articles on celiac. It's in my best interests to give it a go. Hives has deeply motivated me.
Other stuff about me: I am 35 and engaged. I have a cat and a dog. I have a job as an administrator. I am a recent home owner and am going through an extensive renovation. I love gardening, knitting , crochet, sports and travel.
I am so hoping gluten free living helps with my issues I would really like to start living my life again. It has brought not only me to tears but my fiance also. Which hurts me even worse.
This group doesn't seem to have any forums except introduce yourself, so not much room to chat. I started a new Gluten-Free & Celiac group if anyone wants to join it: http://caloriecount.about.com/gluten-free-lif estyle-celiac-g1746
Sorry if this isn't appropriate, I just want us all to get to talking and making friends and learning from each other. If it's not appropriate please feel free to delete this post!
Hi y'all,
I am glad to see a gluten-free site here. I am 41, a mom to four...three teenagers, praise the Lord. (They really are very fun!...most of the time.) I am on my local school board, and homeschool my youngest, who is nine. I love to run...it's the best time of my day. I also love to garden, and am really bummed that some worm or somebody is killing my zucchini plants!
History with weight loss...I have until about the last five years, been able to eat what I wanted and stay skinny, just by running, etc. When I turned 36 or so, I slowly began to gain weight, even though I upped my activity level and watched what I ate. I have been hospitalized twice with severe stomach pain, never diagnosed correctly with celiac. Got asked if I was pregnant many, many times when I wasn't, because of my bloated, painful stomach. I found out about my allergy to gluten just a year ago, and am SO glad to know what the problem was and is.
My favorite gluten-free foods are shrimp, salads, black beans, avocado, pancakes made with buckwheat or oat bran flour, peanut butter, and ice cream. I mostly just skip breads and cereals, although I have found I can eat oatmeal, just not every day. I am very glad that dark chocolate is gluten-free.
Calorie count and a gluten-free diet have helped me lose about 10 lbs in the last 4 or 5 months. It's been very slow, but it has come off. I love this site, and use it to log all my food and exercise.
I'm glad to find this group...would love to meet some gluten-free friends.

Hi everybody. <3
I have been dealing with my weight for my entire life, and am 21 and 280 pounds. Just this May I was officially diagnosed with Celiac's Disease, although I've avoided gluten for the year beforehand. The disease has given my thyroid some issues and due to my depression stemmed from Celiac's, my desire to go and be active slowed down to a halt. But this is my senior year in college and I want to lose weight before I enter the work force. And now that I am restricted with food naturally, I'm excited to see how this all works out!
Interesting fact? I make my own tea and am trying to learn how to make sachets and essential oils so I can sell at school. I am also hoping to get a job at a local soap store.
Hello! my name is liz. im 26 and 5'3". when i started on CC i was at 225 lbs and my goal is to get to 150 lbs.
1. History with weight loss: well, ive been overweight my whole life. i never have really dieted. ever. as an emotional eater, ive never been disciplined enough to stick to "trying to eat a little healthier" for longer than 2 weeks.
2. History with Calorie Count: ive been here for 10 days and have already lost 8 pounds!! i never realized just how much i ate and how many calories i would have in one sitting. wendys was always my go-to when i was having a bad day and i would manage to eat more calories in that one meal than i have been all day on my new diet. starting slow and just watchig my serving sizes has helped so much.
3. Reason for joining this group: i was working at Subway eating a sub for 2 meals a day in college when i started to get really sick. my mom had been diagnosed with celiac a few years before that and recommended that i try cutting out first the white flour and then bread all together when i was still getting sick. the rest of college was pretty hard eating gluten free on a budget but i have been on a gluten free diet for 5 years now and have never felt better. i was so excited when i first saw the huge GLUTEN FREE sign on the new boxes of chex cereal and am in love with the Cinammon Chex.
4. Some interesting details about yourself, such as your job, your family, your pets and your interests: i work at bath and body works a few hours a week but mostly, i am a house-fiancee. my fiance and i live in San Diego with our 2 kitties Gaia and Luna. we love going on walks around Mission Bay, going to the zoo and to disneyland!! last time we went to disneyland we took a pedometer and found out we walked 10 miles!! and they have FANTASTIC gluten free pizza, hot dog buns and chicken sandwiches with buns!! my interests are my fiance, crafting (i love to cross stitch my own celtic knot designs), reading (fantasy, books on paganism or history), watching movies, and im slowly learning that i do like to cook :)
im really glad to find a group here that may be able to help.once i get the hang of counting my calories and watching my serving sizes, im going to try to keep to the food pyramid. what are some healthy grains to incorporate into my diet other than rice?
Hi. My daughter is right above me....!!!! Love you sweetheart!
My name is Donna and I have been over weight since I got my divorce in 1986. Before my divorce I was running and working out like crazy, 125lbs. Now I am over 200, disabled and turning my life around.
I was diagnosed Celiac about 7 years ago by biopsy. When the dr.s office called I thought, What the h**l is that? and started doing research. Back then Whole Foods has little for us to eat. the Hagmann book was about the only thing out there. And now? There is gluten free foods everywhere!!
I just joined CC. My daughter told me about it. Love everything I have found on here. I was so excited to find celiac group here.
Me? I design and create fashion, chain maille and Silver jewelry. I teach classes at a couple locations here in town. I love to craft, just about anything- jewelry, sewing, knitting, crochet, wood. My partner and I have a house on some property north of Phoenix and we have a number of fuzzy kids and 3 dogs. If we could adopt more, we would but our house is full at the moment.
Best of luck to everyone on their weight loss!!
Hi all:
I've just joined Calorie Count (after I saw a link to the site on a friend's Facebook feed), and just joined this group!
In general, I've always struggled with my weight, and am currently at my heaviest (or I was a few weeks ago -- I've managed to lose about 10 pounds so far). Although I do not qualify as a Celiac sufferer, I do score high enough on the scale that I have to avoid gluten (and the nasty side effects). It was probably compounding for years, but my gluten sensitivity came on quite suddenly, only a few months ago. Among other symptoms (such as hives, severe heartburn, constant dizziness, etc.), significant weight gain (about 30 lbs within a month or so) has made this gluten-sensitivity thing really challenging. I also live in a small community (in Ontario, Canada), so access to ready-made gluten-free (convenience) foods is pretty limited, and practicaly non-existent in local restaurants. Now that I've been feeling quite a bit better, I've joined a local all-women gym, where everyone is really nice, but their hours are a bit limited. To help deal with my new life, I've got a team of professional (sometimes expensive) specialists: a nutritionist, a homeopath, an electro-homeopath, and my physician (plus my very supportive parents, who cost the least in money but the most in guilt, lol).
Being new to the site, I wasn't really sure where to start. I thought perhaps communicating with people who face the same dietary challenges (and are also probably struggling to get/remain healthy) would be a good place to start. So here I am!
Let's see, some interesting, non-weight and non-diet related details...
- I've got a pretty wry, sarcastic sense of humour. People don't always get it, especially in print. I'm generally a nice person, so if I ever write something that offends you, please talk/write to me about it -- I likely just didn't realize how it would sound! I'm also really honest, and am a bit of an optimist.
- I have a Bachelor of Business Administration, with a concentration in Human Resource Management. Most recently, I've been working as a corporate trainer in a call centre (that means I teach people how to do their jobs, or how to do them better, etc.) Ideally, I want to help make work more enjoyable for the worker. Although, lately I've begun to think a complete change might be good... like teaching English overseas or something.
- Currently, I'm living with my parents inOwen Sound, Ontario. When I first started getting symptoms, I was too sick to work, so I had to give up my apartment (in St. Catharines, near Niagara Falls), and go on sick leave. I've been doing a lot better lately, and am waiting for work to get organized, to I can get back to the daily grind.
- My mother works in health care and my dad works at Home Depot. My brother has recently graduated high school, and will soon be starting a program called Katimavik (where he will be volunteering in communities across Canada for 9 months). My sister is about to start vet school, and is planning a wedding for next summer. I am single, and know few people in the area (as I grew up in Guelph and went to school in St. Catharines), so tend to spend a lot of time with my family and our two adorable cats.
- I generally enjoy reading (fantasy and historical romance most often), arts & crafts (ex. beading, crochet, drawing, etc.), some TV and movies, music (though I don't play, I listen real well!), and games (ex. cards, boardgames, RPG, etc. though not usually video or computer games like WoW). I'm a little bit of a geek, but not TOO much. ;)
Well, that's me!
P.S. Didn't realize how long my post was until I previewed it. Still not going to edit it down, though. So I guess you've also learned that I can be a bit of a rambler, and I'll learn who actually bothers to read this whole thing! lol
Hi there! Names Shawna and I joined up because I'm so far self-diagnosed with a Gluten Intolerance. Doctors have been oh so helpful in taking my money and leaving me with nothing in the way of answers. The chest/stomach/rib pain I was having sent me to the ER one night and that was the final straw. I could live with getting up at 3:30 for a few hours every once in a while because of stomach pain, but this was ridiculous.
I've been trying to be good and be 90% Gluten Free, though sometimes on a college student budget that's not always the case. I joined CC to help me keep better track of what I'm eating & pick people's brains for what other tasty options are out there. So far I'm enjoying Qinuoa (sp?) noodles and hopefully I'll be able to start buying ingredients to be making my own foods. :-)
Ideally I'd like to lost about 40 lbs, give or take, and I know diet is my biggest enemy. Hoping to turn a new leaf with all the other changes in my life. Here's to a happy, healthier lifestyle!
My name is Angela and after years of struggling with various ailments, including stomach cramps and swelling, I finally found a physician with an answer. I am not a celiac disease patient, rather a list of approx 30 items or so that I am allergic to. Unfortunetaly, my daughter suffers from the same issues.
At this point, I am about six months into learning how to change my diet since receiving this revelation. It has been difficult since my list of high allergies includes black pepper, gluten, dairy, and potatoes. I am would love to get advice on how to find foods to eat in public.
I am not obese, but now that I am in my 30's I find that I am slowly putting the weight on as I raise 4 kids, attend college full time, and have a thyroid issue. I don't have much to lose, but I have much to learn about my recent diagnosis. Once I relearn to eat I am really hoping I will quit swelling to the size of a Macy's Day Parade float.
What type of food should not be eaten?
Calorie Count does not prescribe a particular diet or tell people to avoid particular foods. We only ask that you eat a balanced diet... Read more
