Soooo, I have been playing drums lately, a lot more than usual since I read on this site that drumming burns calories at a pretty good rate. In an hour I can burn 500+ calories and that is about one third what I burn on the Elliptical.

I have to admit that the drumming method is waaay more fun than the Elliptical. To burn 1500 calories on that hamster machine, in an hour, I have to crank up the resistance fully and make a vigorous effort. I also crank up some favorite tunes and watch a silent TV to distract me from the reality of what I am doing. 65 minutes later I am drenched in sweat and headed for a shower.

I have noticed that the practice is bringing me near a threshhold of percussive goodness that I would not perceive otherwise; nice!

The weight loss has been erratic due to interruptions of all sorts. Houseguests, bosses from foreign countries who provide free meals, trips to foreign countries for work, the common cold, etc., all have a hand in helping me make excuses for not sticking to my regimen. But it is my responsibility to work for my goal.

One big factor for me is my penchant for alcohol. Liquor, beer, and wine all love to get in my belly and the Maltose in all of them love to make me heavy and lazy. As long as I don't drink, my weight goes down predictably and steadily. I probably won't worry about it so much when I reach my target weight.

I hope you all are well and getting closer to your target weights.

Mike

Hello all. I have been playing piano for 8 years. I can also play your random percussion instrument. I have been in three different pit bands (all on the keys) and was in a community college Jazz band (on the keys) for 3 years and also a community band (percussion section) for 2 years. I love music and listen to all kinds, and I mean ALL!! I have been getting into classical much more lately because I am in college and need something soothing and relaxing to keep me going. I think playing any instrument is good if you want to loose weight and burn calories. Its rare that you can play a song and eat something at the same time and if you have a passion for music like I do, you never want to quit playing until you have learned what you are working on or have finished writing that song or whatever.

Hi Cool!

I play the piano since I was 6 so that makes it 18 years already? Surprised Recently, haven't been playing much and I've lost interest in it esp. since I have to play for the church. I was in the school band for all my school life except primary school - that makes me in the band for 10 years. Been a percussionist throughout. Wasn't so much of a drummer but had played on the snare, bass, aux, timp, mallets. Timpani and mallets are simply my faves!

I love to sing also but I find my voice too thin and air-ry. I sing in my church choir since 8 years ago as a Soprano and Alto (when necessary because they say I can sight-sing well).

Recently, been thinking of taking up violin or flute lessons. My friend in band used to coach me on flute so I can play a little.

Hi everyone. My name is Bryan ........... I'm glad I found this group.

I have been playing since I was ~14 ..... Mainly guitar but I also play Bass and some Drums.

I was playing in bands by the time I started High School & supported myself through Electronics School (after High School) by playing weekends, weddings, private parties, festivals and such.

I have always written songs (mainly on Acoustic Guitar and a few on Piano) and Original Music has always been a big part of whatever band I was playing in (though Cover Tunes always paid alot better, ha ha!).

I am married and have 3 kids ........ my son Connor is the most like me musically (at least so far).  He plays Guitar and some Drums.

My daughters Sarah and Karley are starting to show interest though & I have high hopes for them.  In fact we have a jam room at our house & own a Drum Set, Bass Guitar & Amp, 4 Electric Guitars & 4 Electric Guitar Amps, a cheap Keyboard & are in the market for a small PA System.  Maybe we will give the Partridge Family a run for their money.

I am a follower of Jesus Christ and play on the worship team at my Church.

My weight has has always been a struggle for me.  I'm built more like a Football Player than a Musician!  At least according to MTV standards.

I just joined CC yesterday in hopes of losing more weigth and keeping it off.  Though we often complicate things, the simple mechanics are: Take in fewwer calories than you burn, right?

I am looking forward to getting to know you guys!

Peace!

I am 24 and I sing and write stuff and play it on my guitar. I've been playing since highschool.

I love the single life since I don't think there is room for anyone else than me, since I take a lot of room;-) if I do something it becomes my passion..not obsession..hey maybe...well whatever!and my weightloss is VERY close to my heart. 10 pounds and Im perfect. Especialy considering The Jesus Christ superstar who's always standing next to me. MY music is also my passion.

I love performing. And it's my responsibility to look the best I can.

I love metal. ANd it's my responsibility to present that scene and be a good heavy metal/headbanger example.

I love Jesus. The same as I wrote before. Im the only one who can do what He inspires me to do .

I am also from Denmark, but living in the states for a while.

Love!

Hey everyone,

My name is Chris.  Guitar/Bass player.  I have been playing off and on since I was around 14 years old.  So thats about 13 years all together.

I've been in and out of bands since High School.  Just recently starting up another one.  I think this time we are leaning towards covers seeing how we all have established careers and the chances of making it big at this point are slim to none.

I listen to almost everything.

Top 5 bands I listened to in the last week:

NOFX

No Use For A Name

Mastadon

Muse

Jack Johnson

Take Care Everyone!

Hello all - I've been playing guitar since I was 17 but really got serious about again just about 4 years ago.  Nice to see a group like this on a weight loss website.

Current favorites are:

Red Hot Chili Peppers

Jack Johnson

Dave Matthews

Fray

Ok, that's it for now. Bye

Hi everyone, I've played piano for most of my life, about twelve years, and the flute for about four years for the school band.

My favorite genres of music are alternative, gothic rock, heavy rock, light metal, and classical (I know it doesn't fit, but oh well)

My favorite composer is Debussy, and I really dislike Liszt.

My favorite bands are:

Three days grace

Disturbed

Red Hot Chili Peppers

Evanescence

Nickelback

Rise Against

and Seether

Hi everyone
I sing and play guitar. I have been performing for a little over two years. I haven't considered recording, because it is so much fun to play for a live audience.
I have been playing guitar off and on since I was in high school - way back in the 70s. I studied classical guitar for about 4 years and finally accepted that there just isn't an audience for that kind of music in Oklahoma. So most of the classical pieces have been abandoned in the repertoire in favor of classic rock, some country, some reggae, some jazz, and some classic R&B.
I have performed at festivals and coffee shops, and now seem to have settled into weekend gigs at a local restaurant. I play solo, with guest musicians sometimes sitting in with me.
After looking at pictures and videos of myself taken at performances, I am reminded repeatedly, that a big part of my responsibility as an entertainer is to deliver eye candy to my audiences. It's hard to do that when I am carrying around a lot of excess weight burden.
So last May, motivated entirely by vanity, I hired a trainer to help me lose weight, to get in shape and improve my appearance. He insisted I keep a calorie log of everything I eat, and after spending a few days wrestling with that, I stumbled onto Calorie Count. What a godsend! I have been using CC ever since, and have managed to lose 10% of my body weight, but now I am stuck at a plateau that I have no one but myself to blame for.
But I am persistent and I refuse to give up on this until I am looking as good as I can look. I am still working out with my trainer, and fitness is my big motivator these days.
I am in my 50's, and my day job career is software engineer.

Hey All!

My name is Heather. I'm 24.   I'm a musician/composer.  I play 12 instruments, teach guitar and piano lessons. I'm classically trained but I play a lot of rock and metal.  My husband is also a guitarist, he just recently won the King of the Blues competition for the Midwest district, we are off to Dallas for the regional contest now.

I was always skinny when I was younger but that's just not the case anymore so I'm trying to slim down.  I have noticed lately that I am intensely self-conscious about getting up on stage with the weight I've put on since getting married...never had to deal with stage fright til now.  Its very frustrating...you just wanna hide, you know?  Unfortunately, so much of the music industry is based on looks...it isn't right or fair but its the way things are.  Would love to get down to a healthy weight so people can focus on my playing and not the way my jeans don't look like they fit lol....

Hi,

My name  is Geoff. I am from the north west and have played guitar for about 8 years. I am middle aged ( but young at heart ) and started playing after buying my young son a guitar but he never touched it. I learned a few chords and started writing songs and now play a little every day. I am not a natural and have found it  a difficult task but really enjoy it and the creativity.I love it when a song comes together. I am not a great vocalist but my ears have become accustomed to my faults and its really about the song as I know I am not a performer.

Stumbled upon this site looking for a calorie counter, great having these other groups and all of us with similar goals.great !.

Keep in touch musically and with advice on how I can lose weight.

C ya

Geoff

Hey! My name's Amanda, and I'm 24. I studied music in my undergrad, and am doing a masters in pop music and culture now. It's a lot of fun - I can justify listening to music or going to a show or even playing a gig as "research" :P

I've been a yoyo dieter my whole adult life. I'm really hoping to change that now. My main goal is to get down to a "healthy" BMI and maintain that. I don't care about reaching low-healthy or anything like that... I'd just like to not be on the overweight side of things

I came to calorie count because... well... largely, it's because I'm lazy and love any website that gives me tools that help manage my day to day life more easily. The Food and Activity logs are particularly helpful

Like I said, I did my undergrad in music - I was a singer... and still am :) I play guitar, ukulele, bass and piano as well, and just bought myself a concertina, which I think is exciting! As for my studies, I'm writing my thesis on microphone practice in studio recording and how it differs between professional and project studios. So... basically I'm a huge geek :P

Aaaaaand yeah - I guess I joined this group to meet other musicians and hopefully find some friends to make this whole losing weight thing easier

I know *exactly* what you mean about the industry, though I don't think I'm as involved in it as you seem to be. The thing is, even if you're only playing small gigs, the same mentality applies. Even if it's not true, it's hard to not feel like people are thinking more about how "bad" you look than about how genuinely good you sound. It's a frustrating situation to be in.  And it's *definitely* harder to get work as an overweight woman than it is as a healthy or, more likely, too-thin girl.

Keep powering through it though! It'll be worth all the work to feel confident onstage again!
