Hi, I was up and down throughout my late teens, but in my 20s leveled out to 145-150 lbs. I ran throughout my 20s but never in marathons and such, but did well enough and ran regularly despite my weight, running between 3-5 miles, about 3-4 x a week.

Now in my late 30s and with a 2 year old, I have yet to return to 150, have roughly been near 170 for two years. I cook for a family now, so I can't live on my noodle/fruit diet anymore.

I joined CC last year, but never stuck to it, finding it hard to come here everyday to account for every bit of food and energy output. I decided to try again however, and join this group looking for inspiration.

Hiya, I have just started running along with watching my diet as I need to loose 28 lbs. I am trying the couch to 5 k. Am struggling on the end of week 2! Have posted for some advice, its hard but love the high following a run! If anyone can advise me in my other post C to 5 K would be fab. Thanks.Smile

Hi,

I just joined CC two weeks ago and have lost three pounds (slowly, but surely), and have 20 pounds to go. I've been running for the past year and still consider myself to be a beginner. Right now, my goal is to run 30 minutes straight without stopping. I found a wonderful program (http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-380-381-386-9397-0,0 0.html) that will help me reach that goal. I'm currently on Week#6. When I first began running just over a year ago, I did far too much, too soon and over-trained. I ended up developing shin splits, which have healed now that I've toned down my workout a bit.

I joined this group because I love trading tips with fellow runners. I'm always looking for ways to improve my run. Right now, I'm running 17 minutes, walking 1, and running for 12. It's really a struggle during those last two minutes. Today I developed a horrible side cramp 30 sec. before the end of the run and had to wimp out! Any tips on alleviating side cramps? I seem to get them frequently despite drinking gatorade and plenty of water.

I'm currently a nanny and I live in NYC. Thank goodness I live so close to the Central Park reservoir, it's what got me hooked on running! Next summer, I'm moving back to my hometown in CA to go to Med School. My dad was a marathon runner, and I hope to follow in his inspiring footsteps, but for now....I'm just trying to hit that 30 minute mark. :)

Good to hear from you Chelsea.  I received a tip about alleviating cramping from my chirpractor who is also a runner.  I used it for the first time last night, I went out for a 6 mile run and got a wicked cramp in the first 10 minutes.  I never usually get side cramps.  He said breathe with your diaphragm.  I didn't have a clue what he meant, he told me to push out my belly as i breathed in through my nose - with a full deep breath.  Hold for second and deeply exhale through the mouth.  It worked and I was able to finish my hour run.  Feels kinda weird but have used something similar in pilates.

hope this helps.  He says cramps are an oxygen deficient thing.  I don't know if that is true or not but this tip worked for me.

Thanks for the tip Lisa! I, too, have heard that cramping is an oxygen deficiency thing. I'll work on the diaphragm breathing.

I'm Anne.

I just joined this website this week.  I've been talking about improving my running and getting some weight off for soooo long now that I'm sure my friends are tired of hearing about it.

I started distance running in 2005 after having children and gaining a lot of weight.  When I started I was 162lbs and a smoker.  I did a great job from 2005-2007.  I ate well and I ran regularly and lost 40 lbs.  Over the last two years, however, I've been completely inconsistent about eating well and running and it's really frustrating. I have gained 10lbs back and given my shortness and stockiness... it's just no good.

So here I am with a new vow.

I'm supposed to run the Toronto Waterfront marathon at the end of this month and if I don't get it together soon the race will not go well... in fact it could be down right ugly.  Over the next few weeks I'm going to establish a good routine of regular running and proper eating.  I'd like to get a few pounds off before the race.

Anne

Welcome to the group Nodiscipline.  I just wanted to wish you lots of luck with your upcoming marathon and with all of your training.  I'm also training for my first marathon - just 5 weeks away now - and I can't wait to cross that finish line!  Stay focused and you can do it.  Hopefully having a goal and a deadline will help keep you motivated.  Again, lots of luck and have a great run!

Maureen

Hi Marueen,

Which marathon will you run?  I was thinking that if I don't get my long run up to 36+ before September 20 I just might change my bib at the Toronto to run the half and find a new marathon in November.  I haven't made up my mind yet.

I've run a few marathons... enough to know that there's no way I'll finish if I don't  train properly.

Anne

I'm running the Hartford ING Marathon on Oct. 10th.  It's supposed to be relatively flat which I'm looking forward to.  We'll see how it goes.  After so many miles even tiny little hills feel enormous.  This will be my first marathon.  20 mile run this weekend and my longest run will be 22 miles in 2 weeks.

Again, lots of luck with your training.  ~Maureen

Hi Everyone,

I am Amy and fairly new to CC.  My history with weight loss has been pretty good.  The older I get, the harder it is to maintain my weight.  I have had three kids and worked very hard each time to getting back to my before pregnancy size.  Now I have my vanity goal of losing about 7lbs to get me to 130 for my 5' 6" frame.

I joined this group because I enjoy running.  I graduated HS 15 years ago and ran Cross Country and Track and was pretty good at it.  I have tried running a few years ago and had so much foot pain I stopped.  I started up again about 3 months ago and have worked through knee pain, heel pain and now am feeling pretty good.  I am hoping to run my first 5k in Nov. with my sister.

Hi my name is Leslie.  I live in vegas and have had success loosing weight with a combination of diet and running.  I was subcribed to weight watchers but cannot afford anymore.  I found this site and I am thrilled.  I have lost some weight and want to maintain.  I love running and do so in the area.  I live in Las Vegas and this will be a good help to continue to keep track of my intake.

I joined because I am psyched that you have a group for runners.  I am hopint to get inspired and get advice if needed.  I want to run the Las Vegas half marathon but not sure.

I am a nursing student and will be graduating in December.  I am thrilled to be done with school and am planning to get serious about training.

Hi Leslie,

Welcome to the group.  Lots of luck with your weight loss.  I'm sure you can do it.  I've lost about 70 lbs. with the help of calorie count.  I also just wanted to encourage you to sign up for that half marathon.  You absolutely won't regret it and you'll be so proud of yourself once you cross that finish line.  Good luck and have fun with your running!

Maureen

Thanks  :)

HI, I am new to running.  Really just in the last month.  I have always been a speed walker, when I stayed active.  I have found over the last few years the weight doesn't come off as easy.  I just turned 50.  I have raised 3 sons and been active with them in scouts.  I have had great sucess with weight loss when I count calories, so here I am.  This is a great site, lots of support.  I am currently training for a couch to 5 K program and hope that mid 2010 I will be training towards a 10k.  I hope to maybe in a year get working towards doing  a 1/2 marathon.  That I expect will be my limit.  You never know though.

I do have 20 lbs to lose, and then I will be working a maintaining that long term.
