Welcome to the Group
Welcome! We would love get to know you, so please tell us a little bit
about
yourself. You can say anything you like (Don't be shy. After all, when are travellers likely to meet again? "Hey, were you on that train of '53?"). But if you're stuck, how about:
1. History with weight loss / Calorie Count:
2. Favourite thing about travelling:
3. Some interesting information about yourself:
4. Random quote for the day:
And now just go ahead and make that first post!
Great idea for a group! This summer I've traveled so much I barely got my bags unpacked before off and away to somewhere else.
Not really sure what to say, so I guess I'll just say where I've been this summer; PEI CA twice, Montreal Que CA, Italy (Rome, Pisa, Venice), and Boston MA USA. We also spent a weekend at our cottage.
My best piece of traveling advice is to take as little luggage as possible and take a lot of pictures. Don't be afraid to get lost- some of my best memories stem from getting hopelessly lost and the adventure it led us on before we got found again.
Hi Queenmedia, thanks for joining:)
I saw an article by Trinny and Susannah about travelling with small kids. Their suggestions differ: one suggests to travel light and buy nappies when you get there. The other suggests to pack all the nappies for the holiday, and as your bag empties you have space for shopping. Either way, I second the 'little luggage' suggestion.
Fun group... already seen some good advice for the future on here.
I've been using Calorie Count for about a year now with pretty good success (when I stick with it). Right now I am pretty lax with the calorie counting itself and using it more to keep track of nutrients because I am pregnant and my doctor recommended increasing my calorie intake a bit.
As for travel... my last three big trips have been to Spain and Germany. I live in the Canadian Rockies and some of my travel is done through home exchanging. I usually don't stay in the town the whole time but it gives me a chance to get to know one area really well and kind of use it as a base camp.
I'm currently am planning an October/November trip to Egypt so any travel advice for there (you can PM me) would be really appreciated.
Hi all!
About myself: I'm 26 years old and originally from Ottawa, Canada. I've lived in Ottawa for most of my life except when I moved to Montreal QC for my undergraduate degree, and I'm currently living in Dublin Ireland (again for school).
History with Calorie Count: I discovered this website while I was searching for calorie/nutritional information, and realised it was also an amazing resource for positive weight management so I joined!
Where I've been: Let's see... I just got back from spending two months in Izmir Turkey this summer (well, most of my family still lives there so we're there almost every year). This year I branched out and went to some amazing beaches along the southern coast of the country and a wonderful time was had ♥
My biggest travel dream is to spend a few months touring around Japan =) I'm already saving up since I know the kind of stuff I want to do there will cost me a pretty penny ;)
Travel Advice: Careful where/what you eat! (I'm sure we all know this by now hehe).
Welcome, Mellow-Everest and BlizzardCake! House exchange huh? Sounds interesting - how does it work? I'm told Japan is just completely different from anywhere in Europe or America, and really worth going (but expensive - they have a strong currency!).
I haven't actually introduced myself. I'm 24, born and bred in South Africa, currently a student and getting married next year. I took 6 months off before university to travel around Western Europe - with a friend from Germany for some of the time, but mostly on my own. I was anxious when I set out: I thought it'd be tough making friends on my own. But the youth hostel environment made it so easy. You'd wake up in the morning and find some stranger in the next bed. "Hi," you'd say, "where are you from? Kenya? No way. Have you been to the Collosseum yet? Let's go."
My travel advice: just do it, already (but bring a guidebook).
I have been travelling a bit this year....but much closer to home than most of you. I live in central Alberta and so far this year I have been to British Columbia on a downhill ski trip in March. British Columbia for a week of camping in July and Saskatchewan for a week in August to visit family and attend a wedding. I have plans to attend a wedding and go camping in mid September which will be in southern Alberta. November will be Mexico to get married...and then back to Saskatchewan for Christmas.
I wish I could go somewhere once a month...as soon as I unpack I am always just playing the waiting game until I can pack again. I am pretty lucky with my job though I am given 17 days holiday per year and I am also allowed to take a few unpaid days per year as well....I really like to use long weekends to my advantage to make the vacation days last longer by only having to use 4 vacation days to get the whole week off.
My favorite thing about travel is the food.....My least favorite thing about travel it the food.
I've been counting calories and working out for just over a year and have lost about 40 pounds :)
Thanks for inviting to the group malaika99! Great idea!! I
love travelling too, but now with a 10 months old, it's a little more complicated. Didn't stop of us from taking her to Bali when she was 4 months old though.
Where else have I been? I'm from Europe, so I pretty much drove, flew, travelled on the train all over. I haven't made it to the Scandinavian countries but I will eventually since global warming makes the summers soooooo hot. Been in Tanzania, Thailand, Singapore, Bali several times, the US (CA, NV, TX), Mexico, the Middle East (Kuwait, Dubai). I would LOVE to go to China for a few months, Mongolia, Siberia...and frankly I would want to go to every country for a few months.
Travelling light is possible, even with an infant.

Dear Malaika,
thank you for inviting me to the group.
I discovered calorie count at the beginning of the year.
It hasn't helped me to lose any weight, as such; BUT my but(t) hasn't continued to seek world domination. :-))
The thing i love most about travelling is the curiosity-factor; the allowing oneself to being surprised (am trying to factor this into my every-day life-style).
I'm a bit shy, so find it hard to strike up conversations with 'new' people; however, in a new country this seems to be easier...
i also like world music; like listening to charlie gillett's 1/2 hourly radio programme on bbc world, and am most recently fascinated by romanian lautari music.
i keep bees (hobby) and enjoy guessing what kind of honey they are making, what colour it will have, smell etc., before each harvest.
I live in central Europe; however, am not travelling enough (for my standards) and want to make 2009 the year of magickal travell (this is supposed to sound pre-industrial revolution; i.e. europe pre travel package...).

Looking forward to meeting you all.

wow andie- I can't imagine doing extensive travel with young kids...I have an 11, 5 & 4 y/o. When we were in Italy, we spent on average 12 hours a day out and about, and we walked everywhere!!
Last Labor day weekend (first weekend of Sept) we went to Boston. Within the first 5 minutes of being in our hotel room our middle child flung the bathroom door open, right into the bare big toe of our youngest. It was bleeding and she wouldn't walk on it at all. (thank goodness I had brought a stroller along!). Our middle child then came down with an "upset digestive system" and needed a washroom at his disposal at all times. Our third (and last) day of the trip, our eldest son woke up in the morning, claiming that he couldn't walk at all- his feet were too sore from the previous days' walking.
That was only a 9 hours drive away- I'd be upset if I flew everyone 9 hrs across the ocean to have the same type of thing happen! Maybe when they're older :)
Haha Luisa, I love the image of the butt aiming for world domination! To me, Sasketchewan IS exotic:p and as for having your wedding in Mexico, that's SO cool! Do you have family there, or is it just a good venue?
Andie, that's a truly amazing number of places you've visited. And Bali with a 4-month-old? ResPECT! My parents drove 1400km across South Africa with friends in a beat-up old VW minibus, when my sister was about 6 months. What can I say, they were hippies. There's a photo of my dad (with big beard and bigger hair) asleep across the back seat, with my sister asleep on his chest.
Hi everyone,
It's great to find others with a travel bug like me! I live in Ontario, Canada but dream of travel all the time. My husband says I have an addiction to travel websites
.
He is in corporate sales and actually does the majority of travel. Because of his work, and accumulated travel rewards, we are able to travel more than we would normally be able to on our own.
Our family of four (we have 2 kids, 13 and 11) has travelled to Florida many, many times, as well as thru the States on the way there. We also have been to the Dominican Republic, the British Virgin Islands, US Virgin Islands and Bahamas several times. My husband and I have also travelled together to Puerto Rico , Vancouver (Whistler) British Columbia, and we've both been to Las Vegas.
We have plans for a cruise in December that will bring us to Belize, Honduras and Mexico. Looking forward to that!!
I had joined Calorie Count in 2008 but never fully used it. My sister recently joined so my hubby and I are doing the program in earnest now. I really want to lose some weight before our next cruise. Tired of hiding behind the kids in all the pictures!
