Welcome to the Group
Welcome to the CC Book Club!
We would love get to know you, so please tell us a little bit about yourself.
What kind of books do you like to read? How do you find time to read? Do you buy or borrow from the library? Do you have a favorite author!
Right now I have the forums arranged for you to share thoughts about books that you're reading based on their genre. So you're welcome to start new threads about the books you're reading.
And now just go ahead and make that first post!
p.s. I edited this message from the one that it automatically came with. We can talk about weight loss if we want to, but mainly this is a group for booklovers. Please feel free to let me know if you think this group would be better if we made any changes. If you ever want to have a group read and all read the same book and then talk about it together, I think that would be a lot of fun! ![]()
Long story short: I joined CC in the Spring as a brainwashed teenager because I thought it would help me to restrict calories even more. I ended up learning a lot about starvation mode and eating disorders along the way, though, and I've finally come to realize that I'm anorexic. Now I'm just trying to break the ED mind-set. Which is so much harder than I ever thought possible =[.
On a happier note =] : I joined this group because I ADORE reading. It's like my life. Forget TV; a good book is a million times better! =D
Random details: I'm a vegetarian. I'm a nerd. I'm fifteen. I'm a sophomore. I play tennis. I live in Michigan. I like meeting new people and helping them =].
Oh, and my name is Laure. Which was probably evident. But just thought I'd add it ;]
And you didn't write about yourself, nomoreexcuses! ;D
You are so right! Sorry! I'll give you my long story short too.
I've been on CC since January 2006. I'm in my *cough* late 30s. I have a 16-year old daughter. I'm a librarian. And I've loved reading since I can remember -- back when I used to get in my closet and hang a flashlight on a coat hanger so that I could read my Nancy Drew books after bedtime. So obviously you can see that while I appear mild-mannered and quiet on the outside, I find my ways to rebel! LOL
I used to write too - poems, stories and screenplays. And then after I went back to school for my masters, it seems like I switched to reading all non-fiction and I'm still in that phase 3 years later. So I'd like to get back into some fiction and it doesn't have to be 'literature' either, but I hope to read that too.
Welcome to the group everybody!
Hi guys! Just wanted to introduce myself, I'm very new to both CC and forums in general but I'm having a great time with both so far. I'd been exercising for a couple months and no weight loss at all, and now 4 lbs. in two weeks with CC!
Anyhow, I'm so glad that there's a book group on here, I'm always interested in getting recommendations for new reading because I go through books like crazy. I've loved reading since I can remember (loved the Nancy Drews too, haha). I'm not too imaginative myself but I admire writers and artists' work so much! One of my favorite authors is L.M. Montgomery (Anne of Green Gables and its ilk), but I love many genres, mainly fantasy and science fiction, horror, and general fiction. Not as much into nonfiction, but am working on getting more into it. I'm also getting more into borrowing from the library - with this economy it really helps my wallet.
Congrats to all of you for being here and making an effort to be healthy!
Cheers,
Melissa
Oh, and since I'm out of new reading material, I am currently reading "The Demon Awakens" by R.A. Salvatore. It's interesting, easy reading for when you're working too much and studying for the CPA exam, heh...
Hi, all, I've been a book lover forever, I don't think I could live without having at least one going at any given time. I like to call myself a book slut cause I'll pretty much read anything (OK, not Danielle Steele.)
I just finished Animal Dialogues: Uncommon Encounters in the Wild by Craig Child, which I loved. That guy is maybe a little crazy, spends winters living in teepees and stuff, but loves nature and animals so that works for me.
I just started sort of a new agey book (a little embarassing to admit, but it looked good) called the Four Fold Way by Angeles Arrien. It probably won't take long to read, I suspect.
Hi, there!
As you can see, my name is Sandra. I'm just joined the site --overwhelming right now.
I'm 58 years young, widowed, mother of 2 grown daughters, and more overweight than I want to admit. I'm in the health professions, and at the moment I'm attempting to become a better role model, while helping my health along, too (diagnosed with T-2 diabetes 8 years ago). I, found this site while doing some research. It looks to be the best I've reviewed thus far.
This is the first on-line chat group I've ever joined -- I guess it's easier to join because it's about books, which I love, just like the rest of you. I have a large library of my own, but frequently use the library's inventory, too.
I usually have 3 or 4 books and/or magazines going at a time...one for each room. I pick a book up from time to time...while dinner's cooking, while waiting for appts, at lunch, etc. I just fit them in. I love a rainy day, because then I feel less guilty about reading instead of doing all the outdoor tasks waiting for me.
I like non-fiction, right now focusing on Literacy and Educational issues especially as they affect counseling people with low reading literacy, as well as health literacy. I also read extensively about ...gardening, woodworking, crafts, sewing, architecture, etc. I just finished listening to a book on CD: How to Meditate by the Dahli Lama...very, very interesting.
I'm also game for nearly any fiction except those that strike of horror and slasher type stuff...I get nightmares too easily.
It might be fun to decide on a book in the coming months to read and talk about . I haven't read it yet, but I think Barbara Kingsolver's book, "Animal Vegetable, Miracle," might be a good group read.
I also like "bubble-gum" reading...The Nanny Diaries is much more funny humorous and thoughtful read than the movie ever could be. I listened to The Diary of Bridget Jones and Bridget Jones: the Edge of Reason on tape while I was quilting and thought I'd die of laughter...again, much, much funnier than the movie. ... And mystery/sleuth fiction like that of Sue Grafton; suspense/spy fiction like that of Tom Clancy, Grisholm, and Ludlum. Sci-fi and fantasy-- and the Harry Potter books, Ursula LeGuinn, Andre Norton. Ayn Rand, Historical fiction - Mitchner; historical romance...and, of course, Jane Austen, et al.
I guess what I'm saying is that I'm game for anything! ;->
The group seems to be very warm.
Hello everyone, My name is Bret, I am a 40yo father of 5, am on a journey to lose 40lbs that began about a week and a half ago.
I never was a reader growing up, and to be honest dont consider myself an avid reader now. That being said, I ABSOLUTELY love reading John Grisham, to date the only one of his books I havent read is Playing for Pizza, and I start it when I awake today. I have also read a few of the Alex Cross Novels by James Patterson and liked them alot, am thinking with the many changes I am making in my physical self, I will also try to make some in my *intellectual* self too, and a good starting point will be to read more, probably beginning with the Cross novels.
As is evident from my choices, I like the Suspense stuff, however I am a huge sports fanatic and have heard great things about books written by Rick Reilly and John Feinstein, actually have read one of his, *Season on the Brink*, and loved it, may have been a lil biased on that one tho as I have met and spent time with Coach Knight and was a follower of IU basketball up to the pt of his release.
I hope to stay involved in the forums and am determined to stay involved in CC as I have already seen results that I can directly contribute to the site.
Good Luck and Good Reading to all
Hi all...I too love to read. Thank goodness for a mom who read to me and who nurtured a love of books in me (although strangely enough, she never reads now!)
When I was a kid, I couldn't get enough of Christopher Pike, R.L Stein, et al in that genre. And Torey Hayden- don't ask!!
As a teen, I read everything Stephen King. E-ve-ry-thing! Then I got to the point where I didn't care for the excessive language, so I switched to Dean Koontz, who IMO is the non-pottymouth version of King! :)
As an adult, I love reading Grisham (didn't love "A Painted House" though- stick with what you know man!), Terry Pratchett, Lawrence Watt Evans, Mary Higgins Clark, Nelson DeMille, Jerry B Jenkins & Tim LaHaye, Jonathan Kellerman, Sandra Brown, James Patterson, Dan Brown, Iris Johanson... I could go on and on!
About me, a CC'er since March '08, currently trying to shed less than 5 pds. 32y/o, mother of 2 sons, 11, 5, and a daughter, 4. Married for 13 years. I live on a produce & grain farm and 5 years ago was adopted by a lovely cat named Molly.
edited to add: I absolutely adore Readers Digest condensed novels- I've discovered so many different authors and styles that I normally wouldn't offer a second glance! Also, I rarely buy new books, preferring to go to the library or a second hand store.
Hello all,
I'm a 40ish person who decided that its time to start over again. I'm in the midst of losing my job here in Pennsylvania but that's not too horrid. I have been trying to lose a good bit of weight over a year now but haven't been too successful. Need to watch the portion control and exercise some more.
I'm in the midst of reading 2 books at the moment:
A Bitter Feast by SJ Rozan and An Irish Country Doctor by Patrick Taylor.
Thanks for having me here!
Lisa
Welcome, Lisa! I hope you find the same level of support and guidance that I have gotten here - it has really made a difference for me after years of failed attempts or rapid re-gains.
Currently I am listening to The Know-It-All by AJ Jacobs during my commute (memoir of a guy who decides the read the entire Encyclopaedia Brittanica). And I'm just about to finish reading The House at Riverton by Kate Morton - great book set in the 10's-20's in England with a compelling mystery - rather gothic in tone while also very modern.
Hi! I just joined CC today. I'm also in my *cough* late 30s. :)
I'm an author, which has no doubt contributed to the rapid expansion of my rear end since I spend so much of my day sitting on it!
I write romance and read a lot of everything -- genre lit, lit fic, non fic. If it's bound -- or heck, even in e-format! -- I'll read it.
I just finished a memoir by Sue Monk Kidd called "The Dance of the Dissident Daughter." Very informative and inspirational.
I'm currently reading "The Book of Beasts" a translation of a medieval bestiary by TH White. Both informative and entertaining -- the White's footnotes are very amusing! It's research for the story I'm writing.
I read less than I did before I started writing, but still read a lot. I carry a book with me everywhere.
I borrow a lot from the library except for auto-buy authors and books by friends. I don't have a specific favorite author -- there are too many good ones!
HI I'm a Canadian and I just found this site. I'm an avid reader, but not much lately since I've had twins in March. I'm super busy and don't have time to read. I'm an aspiring novelist, not so much for publishing purposes but just to put my ideas on paper. I'm almost thirty and would love to spend my life writing novels. I went to art school for two years but I discovered I didn't have to passion for art that it takes to be any good. I still appreciate art but I would love to capture the images in my head of my stories. I get inspired to write from music mostly.
I love historical fiction, especially anything pre-industrial age. Ancient cultures are fasinating to me. One day I would like to write a series of novels based in ancient times. I also love philosophy and reading it feels refreshing.
Chapters is my favourite store!
