Welcome to the Group

Welcome! We would love get to know you, so please tell us a little bit about yourself. You can choose any format you'd like, but most of us here share some or all of the following details:

  1. What edition do you play? (1, 3.5 . . . 4 . . .)
  2. What race / class to you commonly play?
  3. How often do you roll 20s?
  4. Why do you play D&D? (For the story, to hurt things, for the chicks*
    * May or may not be a trick answer)
  5. What do you do when not in nerd mode?

I was so surprised to see that there was a group for pen and paper table top D&D!  With everyone playing online now I never thought I'd see a group still dedicated to the good ol' fashioned way of gaming.

I've been playing for about... *mental count*... eleven years I suppose.  I have tried several editions, but found that I love AD&D (yes, you read that correctly!).  For me, it focuses more on the role playing as opposed to power gaming.  My husband DMs, and he is strictly loyal to AD&D as well, which works out. lol

My most memorable and fantastic campaign experience is currently still going on... my husband has been DMing our party (of 8) through a single campaign for just shy of 3 years now.  It's absolutely fantastic.  We love puzzle games- some good hack and slash now and then is great to unwind, but solving an overall huge puzzle that requires teamwork and the various skills of all the party members is one of the things I love best about our games.

Mostly I agree with previous comments RE AD&D vs later editions.  Although to be fair, I mostly play the 2nd edition rules as I think it does a better job play balancing.  As a mostly wizard type though I did initially intensely dislike the reduction in spell power at higher levels, specifically the capping of additional effects at (for the most part) 10th level (fireball, LB, Magic missile, etc).  Then I realized that I almost never played a character too much higher than that anyway so it didn't really matter...  I have been in hiatus after a move, and haven't been able to hook up with a group I like locally.  Quite a drag...

Hihi,

I started off playing second edition D&D, tried 33.5, went back to 2nd ed but am now playing 4th. :) It's great. I don't have a "type", but the most fun I ever had was playing a knight with an int of 6 & wisdom of 8. She could count to potato, and is sadly in the DM's file cabinet now, but it was an epic death. Our wizard summoned lightning & rolled a 1. As a knight, I was in full plate waving a sword in the desert yelling at the enemy... The lightning did maximum damage, dropped me to 'ain't coming back' dead, and melted me into stained glass. The wizard has a piece of the glass as a lightning rod now.

I play D&D because it's fun, and I don't think I have a non-nerd mode. :)

Count to potato?  I don't think I am familiar with that idiom -- how cool is that?

I think the most fun character I ever played was a Wizard (transmuter) in 2E, who was obsessed with seeking, brewing, and otherwise obtaining the perfect ale.  He spent most of his plunder on researching new spells and components to meet this goal.  He met an unfortunate demise when he got caught up in a religious war between dwarfish factions -- one group who believed brewing the perfect ale magically should be solely the province of the clerics of Moradin, and the followers of Hanseath, who didn't care where the best ale came from, as long as they got lots of it :)

Never get involved in dwarfish religious disputes!

To count to potato, mumble, mumble number, potato! there are potato gnolls hiding in those bushes!

:)   As long as there aren't potato stone giants lurking nearby as well, we should be OK!  I don't think I should like to encounter as many as pumpkin gnolls however...

I admit it, I'm not necessarily a D&D player anymore - I'm not a fan of 4th Edition, more because of the direction they've taken with the materials of the game than the actual rules.  I do, however, still play a number of other tabletop RPGs - currently I'm playing Shattered Empires (AKA Arcanis.  New ruleset from Paradigm Concepts for an established setting that was D20) and Star Trek (Last Unicorn).  I've been a gamer since I went to college in 1995 and fully intend to be a gamer for the rest of my life.

How this ties into weightloss - I have the best fed gaming group in town, I suspect.  I don't mean quantity, but I mean that generally I made something rather than having the typical pizza.  This Sunday will be an exception where another player is bringing KFC; my mom is going to be visiting and I don't want to have to find time to cook as well.

Very good!  And I see that you are playing Settlers of Catan -- another excellent choice!

I have never played Arcanis, but I have looked at some reviews.  I like what I have read of the basic concept of the spellcasting system.  The idea of being able to cast anything anytime, incurring strain, or potentially stamina damage it you are pushing hard, fits more into my own internal imagination of how I would like magic to work...

Would you believe that the Settlers game in the picture was at someone's wedding reception? :)  I'm pretty much an all around gamer geek - tabletop, LARP, computer, board games like Catan, non-CCGs like Dominion...

For Arcanis, the other thing that's kind of neat is how their new initiative system works.  Basically, it's a rolling clock, and things are done more in small chunks, so there's less of the "I swing my sword, be back in five minutes" thing that you get in so many systems.  I'm not going to claim it doesn't have flaws (I play an archer and it sometimes seems like I'm so slow compared with the melee types), but I'm pretty happy with it so far.  I'm just hoping that they get adventures out fast enough with their ongoing campaign; I suppose I could run something myself, but the company's owner and the guy who writes the main storyline, Henry Lopez, tells much more compelling stories than I could come up with.  Back in the D20 days, several of us claimed he was an Epic Level Bard. :)

Merp.

Hi, I'm Kaylee.

What edition do you play? (1, 3.5 . . . 4 . . .): 3.5 What race / class to you commonly play? Oh deal lord.  That awkward moment where you don't know how to spell Githzerai. XD How often do you roll 20s? ;P More than everyone else in my group. Why do you play D&D? (For the story, to hurt things, for the chicks*
* May or may not be a trick answer): Not here for the chicks, seeing as I'm a straight one, but all I usually do is yell out stupid meme answers to things our DM asks.  The beauty of being good friends with the DM... What do you do when not in nerd mode? ...Life exists outside nerd mode? I don't think I've been there.  It's like the nuclear holocaust happened, but just on my 'normal' social life.

By the way, every time I read the "I attack the darkness," all I can hear is "and you lost your pants!" Weird jokes in my group, I tell you.

Nice --  I wish I could break the 5% barrier for rolling natural 20's, but I just can't seem to manage it ;)

XD  I really don't know how I do it- all I know is that I'll get a 20 when attacking a starving dog, but when I go to attack the boss, I'll get a 3.

So, I tend to attack the dogs.  (Insert another weird joke from my group ).

Well,

That can actually come in really handy if you come up against a pack of hell-hounds :)

Howdy, internet friends...

Sadly, after graduating from college (2006) I moved away from my geeky cohorts and have yet to find myself a gaming niche here.  I do remember my d&d days fondly, however, and I probably share other interests with you all as well.  :)

What edition do you play? 3.5, (also dabbled in d20 modern & star wars)

What race / class to you commonly play? Ever the bard...

How often do you roll 20s? I don't think my dice have 20s.

Why do you play D&D? I played because I get a kick out of leveling up.  If only we leveled up in real life in the same way, right?  Woo! Hello, birthday... hello prestige class!

What do you do when not in nerd mode?  I am not sure how to answer this.  I think I must always be in nerd mode, but obviously, I am not always playing d&d... I game online and not online, I am a teacher, I chill with my two cats and my fiance, I watch entire series of things on netflix without shame, I avoid driving on highways, I make up words to songs on the radio.  All awesome, all the time.

Hello, new bard friend!

My last group had a bard in it too, but the sad part was that she was also our only healer, our tank, and our only melee attacker.

>.> But I suppose that's the fault of the wizard, druid, mage, and telekinetic, right? XD

So, basically, bards are BA. :D

Hey guys!

ive played all the editions (playing 18 years), but im fond of 2nd edition. Most recently i picked up materials for 4th edition and jumped in with DMing. My group seems to be enjoying it so i guess im going my job well enough.

i may be the most boring "fantasy" game player EVER as i strongly perfer human warrior types... but wait! i can explain... Humans are often the 'young' race... theyre cocky AND ignorant which easily leads to ironic humor!

these days i roll all my dice behind a screen so I can roll 20s as often as id like!

Why do i play? Its the best waste of time I can imagine! It exersizes critical thinking and is more interesting than a bad movie...

my wife and i consider gaming "quality time" so we do alot of it in many forms... but i also Airsoft and play Hockey! Go Canucks!

Not great at introductions so here's the form :P  I was surprised to find this group and jumped on it immediately.

  1. What edition do you play? (1, 3.5 . . . 4 . . .)
3.5...I'm open to other editions OTHER THAN 4 (I have a few books back from 2, I think) as well as other systems, but 3.5 is what I know well.
  2. What race / class to you commonly play?
Halflings are the closest to my heart. <3  But I can be found playing humans or occasionally half elves.
Other races I'm not entirely confident that I would be able to do justice to in RP, so while some of them interest me quite a bit, I tend to shy away.

I am a dirty multiclasser and am not afraid to admit it.
  3. How often do you roll 20s?
    5% of the time? :P
  4. Why do you play D&D? (For the story, to hurt things, for the chicks*
    * May or may not be a trick answer)
For the story, and not just the plot..As a writer one of the most intriguing aspects for me is the personal motivation and growth of the characters which develops through their experiences and interactions, and really fuels the plot in a way.
But I do enjoy the character building and numerical aspects as well. And sometimes you come out with some REALLY awesome battle stories.

It's a fun thing to do when hanging out with friends.

And then there's the chicks of course. :P

  5. What do you do when not in nerd mode?
All sorts of things! I'm kind of a hippy and love doing things outside, be it caving or tramping through the woods picking fruit. I like reading but don't do it often enough anymore. I play video games and want to program, but that doesn't much count as not being in nerd mode. :P

I'm really up for most things, particularly if I haven't tried it before.

As a side note, I'd like to mention that while I had casually played D&D beforehand, the thing that really got me into it was actually the video game Neverwinter Nights and a roleplay server therein. From there, I began to memorize PnP rules and play it with a renewed passion.

  1. What edition do you play? (1, 3.5 . . . 4 . . .)                                                      Most recently 3.5 but I have played them all and they have all been fun. Its the people and the characters they play that are important and the source of fun to me not the rules.
  2. What race / class to you commonly play?                                                            Monks and druids are my favorite two classes and race well any race the more exotic the better I say!
  3. How often do you roll 20s?                                                                                 Never as often as I would like and not as often as I roll 1's or so it seems. My dice hate me I think.
  4. Why do you play D&D? (For the story, to hurt things, for the chicks*
    * May or may not be a trick answer)                                                               To relax and escape from reality if only for a while. Being a hero is something I don't get to do in real life at least not that I am aware.
  5. What do you do when not in nerd mode?                                                    I am always in Nerd mode. It is who I am. World domination through gaming!
