Hello, I'm thrilled to see this group. My goal is to do some Sprint Tri's in 2009. I am in my late 40's, and have yo yo'd my weight until I was 80 lbs overweight, since April I've lost 25 pounds and -15 overall inches. Previous weightloss efforts were through dieting and I simply cannot motivate myself in this way anymore. My success this past spring was through a combination of Calorie Count, a personal trainer, gym membership, lap swimming and a couch-to-5K program.
A bit too much too soon, at least with the running, I continue to suffer from strains and tendenosis in my achilles. I'm faithfully stretching and working on strengthening and hope to be back running this fall. I am hoping to find support, tips and motivation through this group.
Thanks for joining.
I personally have never been in a triathalon but I wish to be in one. I'm 5'11" and 3/4 (I always like to point out the 3/4s because I'm still growing) and I weigh between 190 and 195. I just got serious about biking in mid august 2008 and I do 3-7 miles a day (I have school) in upstate newyork (it's mostly uphill and grueling). My favorite activity in a triathalon is biking, then swimming, and my least favorite is running.
I've always loved swimming an swim the 50 freestyle in 54 seconds. I have difficulty with the running due to strains and week hamstrings. I plan to do more Yoga to stretch and strenghthen before I attempt running again. I've been in the gym most, but occasionally get out on the road with my bike for a 5-7 mile ride.
Hi everyone! I am just wrapping up my second season of triathlons. I have a race tomorrow and then one more in 2 weeks. I started tris last summer and was instantly hooked! it is such a fun and complex sport. I swear I have ADD so this is a good sport that keeps me moving from one activity to the next. There's so muhc you hav eto think about.
When I started training in June of 07, I was about 220 pounds (had already lost 15 pounds by that point). By my main race in September, I was 205. I started this season at around 190-195 pounds and am now sitting at about 180. I am hoping to lose these last 20 pounds before season starts next year. Losing weight helps sooo much during the race! I took 34 min off my Olympic distance time this year! So now I've got my eyes set on a 1/2 ironman. I hope I can make that next year, but I'm also planning a wedding so that may get int eh way of training. In my off season, I do a lot of running, 10ks and stuff and this year I need to get a half marathon in.
Seriously, if you haven't done a tri, you need to do it! Everyoen will admire what you have accomplished and you will feel so incredible about what you did!
I'm setting my goal on participating in 3 Sprint tri's for 2009. My training consist of spinning, lap swimming and running. I just started back running on Sunday and went 3 miles, my achilles have healed, finally!
I'm excited about this group! I am planning on competing in my first (sprint) triathlon in early May. It's a 350m swim, 12 mile bike, 2 mile run. I am 20 y/o, 140lbs, 5'6 female. I swam competitively for a good chunk of my life, and so I am the best at swimming. I'm the slowest at biking. This week has really only marked my first full week of training. Monday and Tuesday I walked/jogged 4.2 miles each. Wednesday I did a spinning class for an hour, then swam a 1000 yards. Today I am going to walk/jog, and tomorrow I'll probably bike/swim again (probably swim 1500 yards this time).
For the triathlon rookies out there, when do you think it would be worth it for me to purchase "hardcore" gear? I don't plan on purchasing a wetsuit until I'm 100% positive I'll be swimming in a body of water. But what about proper biking and running clothes?
Thanks :-)
Hi all,
I've been loving working out and being outside for a life time, but in my late 40's started the triathlon thing. (I wonder if this forum will correct the title to "Triathlon" instead of "Triathalon" - took me awhile to find it because of the wrong spelling)
Triathlons are fantastic for health of body, mind, and soul, to stay more injury free and to burn the calories. Now in my 50's my metabolism is shifting and I find I have to change my eating habits, which is a struggle. Even with exercising 6+ hours a week, I gain weight. Argh. I'm part of calorie count to be accountable and set goals for the weight loss. It can really be a challenge though.
Sounds like lots of us struggle with the swim portion of the tri... anyone want to start a new discussion thread on that?
Thanks.
Hi everyone! I am 23 years old 5'10'' and 1/2 and I weigh 160. I have never done a triathlon before but have always wanted to. I use to play soccer in college but tore my ACL, MCL, and meniscus sophomore year and decided to stop playing. I biked a lot to get back in shape and really enjoyed it. Since then I have slowly become a couch potato. Now I am engaged (just set the date for june 2010!!) and am tired of sitting at work and on the couch all day. I am ready to become an athlete again!
Since I am new to this does anyone have any tips on how to begin training? I don't want to start out too hard and injure myself but I want to make sure I am doing it correctly.
Thank you!
J
Let's see, I have been trying to lose weight since I had my first child...sometimes more the others. at this point I am heavier then I was a year ago and really want to get back down to where I was. I am currently training for my first marathon of the year in May and still feeling really strong. I am working on weight loss but trying to make sure I do it very slowly so I don't risk injury. When I get into prime mileage I will not focus on weight loss just in making sure I have enough energy.
I joined this group because I want to start adding tri's into my summer schedule. So far I have 2 marathon's, 2 half marathons, and a few other shorter races planed and I though a tri (or two) in there might help me keep on track and add some variety to my training schedule. Though I'm not sure how I'm going to add in the swimming part since I do not have a gym membership and I don't have a lake nearby (and it's extremely cold with snow on the ground).
I am a mom of 3 and run a daycare out of my house. I don't allow people to use excuses about working out. I used to be the master at it...work....kids... bla, bla, bla. You find the time and you make the time. Currently I get up at 4am three days a week so that I can get my running in, and I do the rest of my cross training and strength training in during the middle of the day while my daycare kids are napping.
Wow - you are all such a motivation! I'm 42 living in Florida. My weight has always fluctuated 10-20 pounds (mainly from inhaling too many snacks and adult beverages), but I'm hoping to go from 175 to 145 by the end of 2009. That means much more activity and less happy hours! I joined this group because I've always said I wanted to participate in a triathlon, but NOW I'm really going to do it (hummm...guess I should fill out the entry form and send it in) in September in Orlando. I've been biking (mountain) for the past 10 years, teach spinning classes and I finally ordered a road bike (so I've got the biking portion covered). I'm going to start working on the running part by increasing my running to walking ratio. But the swimming part...ummm...maybe I should take some swimming lessons. I can swim, but don't really feel comfortable in the water. I'll work on that soon, once the ocean water warms up a bit. Any advice, suggestions, etc. would be appreciated.
Hi I am 35 and I had twin girls two years ago. The day before I had them I was 205 and the day after 184. I started running with them in the jogging stroller to get out of the house. Today I am 148. I did some tri training classes for 12 weeks over the winter as I could not swim. I am more comforatble now in the water and I will do a tri next year. This year I am doing a 1/2 marathon I did one last year and finished in 2:25. I did buy a road bike used from mu Brothers friend and I have used it a few times. I am going to start to ride to work. I have calorie counted in the past and tracking gives me great success. I need to think before I eat. I just learned of this site from my new running partner/neighbour. I am happy to be on board and look forward to the motivation!
