Hi All,
I've been on CC for about 4 months. Prior to that, I always counted calories, but on my own and tracked in Excel. I'm classic yo-yo dieter, and I've fluctuated between 123-175 several times within the past decade. I'm currently back down to around 125, and am maintaining.
I've had back issues for quite some time. About 2 years ago, they became so unbearable I was barely able to function. I saw a chiropractor that helped with the acute pain, but I've been suffering from sciatica/piriformis syndrome ever since.
In May I started to be much more aggressive towards fixing my back issues. More chiropractor visits, GP visits, X-rays, cortisone shots, exams by orthopedic doctors, physical therapy, and finally Pilates.
My back is starting to improve, but still have flair ups frequently. I hope that we can all share our experiences with back pain, and any tips and tricks we have learned along the way!
Hi All,
I have been through gamut of back related fun. I have recently had a surgery to correct "spondy" ( a fracture in the spine.) While in surgery a second fracture was discovered.. Before that I had many shots, chiropractor visits, psychical therapy. All to end up gaining 23 pounds. My doctor said I should not worry about the weight until the bone grafting sets with my new hardware..thus the name Iron_spine, But I really want to be healthy and active. Finding activities I can do with out pain is difficult so if any one has a suggestion I am so open.
My Brother introduced me to this web sight and it has helped me so much. THe weight is not moving fast but, at least I know i am eating right. I think some of the medications I am on are slowing weight loss even more..frustrating as they helped me gain too.
I am hoping to meet people in this group that have any suggestions as I am open. And if I can help any one through my experiences I am happy to.
A little about me not the back..I love the outdoors. I have two of the cutest spoiled dogs ever. The pic in my profile is Butch,,and believe me he has eared the name. I also have an Aussie/black lab mix her name is Paige.
I am currently healing not working (but that is a job). When employed I am in Sales and love it. I look froward to meeting new friends here and learning from each other. Oh, I also babble a little sorry...LOL
Hi Iron Spine,
I can relate to your story, I have been through everything as well and finally gave in and had surgery September 18, 2008, My left iliac vein was torn during the surgery and I marshmallowed up over 50 pounds in days because they tied off the vein. It has been hell trying to recover let alone lose weight. I am eatiing healthy as well and still limited to what activities I can do but I did find a Walking workout on my Cable TV and with my therapy execercise I am hoping for some results. I am still swollen and they say it takes 1 year or more for my other veiins to take over and that is just one of the complications I am suffering from. The Surgery From Hell,
Enough about that and a little about me. I love Hockey, Sunshine and sunbathing, I have two girls and 1 beautiful Grand Daughter age three, A very supportive and Wonderful Husband of 29 years
I am also unemployed because of the surgery and I don't know if I will ever be able to work again because of it. Use to be a Restaurant Manager it had its ups and downs but at least I had my own Money!!
When was your Surgery and How r u doing know?

Hi All,
I'm joining this group because after 40 plus years of never even having a twinge in my back, I found myself unable to stand up long enough to take a shower because of back pain. I tried to ignore it for a couple of weeks, then went to the GP and waited for two weeks while prednisone, valium, and Robaxin failed. Finally, I went to a physical therapist where I have gotten some relief but no where near normal or where I want to be. Since there is progress I'm working hard at it including losing weight. I need to lose over 100 lbs and this back thing really got my attention. I have always been a very active person and this threat to my mobility has scared me and really gotten my attention to do something about it. It seems like most of you have had far more significant issues than I have had and I hope you're all living at least in moderate comfort. I hope to get there in the near future with the help of my physical therapist. I'm now 4 weeks in and have made some progress but still have very limited stand up time.
I have lumbar disease. It is a degeneration of the bone. I am in my 50's and have had it for at least 15 years. It is lower back pain, and weakness. I visit my faithful chiropractor once a month, and it does wonders. The other thing that I do for myself is WALK! It keeps the muscles strong and my back supple. If I miss a day or two I can always tell by my stiffness. As soon as I start walking again, the pain is less noticeble. I highly recommend walking for those who can.
Hi,
I am Cat. Although I do not have a diagnosed spinal condition , I have experienced intermittent but increasing lower back pain over 10 years. MY MRI showed very mild arthritis in my lower back that the doctor said is normal for my age (48). However, I had a serious Strain? due to bad posture at the computer for several hours. The lower back pain was excruciating to the point that I resorted to pain pills etc... Then unexpectantly I need emergency open heart surgery. Due to all the best rest after the heart surgery my back pain went away. Now, unfortunately it has been back for ~1 month or 2.
Excercise restriction: I developed flantar fasciitis in february which is limiting my walking ditance so I cannot walk for exercise. I am hoping to have soundwave surgery (non-"cutting" surgery the end of this month. Hopefully, that will relieve the feet pain and I can start walking/elliptical trainiing again for exercise.
Well that's my lower back pain story...it definitely is not as severe as many of the prior posts. Wishing you all well in your ecoveries and pain management.

Hi,
I am Samuel. I have been a registered memeber of cc since Feb of 08, I have only really started by weight loss over the last couple of months. I had a partial discectomy about 15 years ago. I have not been diagnosed but I am sure that I have artritis in my lower back. It had been hard to do cardio with my back. I also have bad knees and that is not helping. I am trying very hard and I have lost 14 lbs in the last 3 weeks. Not much but a start.
Hi,
I am Brenda. I am 44. I've been a calorie count member for a little bit, but never consistent with using the tools this year. I've had quite a few health issues to slow my progress. In May I got sick and ended up having female surgery in early June. This caused me to gain 10 more pounds. I've had cataract surgery on both of my eyes, one in July and another 2 weeks ago. My back history is not very long or complicated, but I think my recovery may become long and complicated. I herniated my L5/S1 disc on October 13th. It is the second time in 4 years that this has happened, but it was much worse this time. Since then it has been a process of epidurals and vicadin and flexeral. I went from being flat on my back for 3 weeks to most recently being able to stand/slowly walk for 1 hour at a time and do chores around the house. I am unable to bend over, or to sit in a chair or ride/drive a car without a cushy pillow, and then it is tough after 20 min. The sciatic pain can be really bad sometimes.
After my first eye surgery and prior to my disc issue, I was very active. I did step aerobics 3-4 times a week, karate twice a week and yoga twice a week. I had lost the 10 pounds I had gained. I was very flexible and knew that I would be at my fitness and weight goals by February. Since my injury I've gained 1 pound. I am not one to look frequently at the scale, but now I feel I have to. I've been struggling with the emotional toll of my injury and lack of mobility and social networking. I cannot eat out or go to movies or even to church as I cannot sit. I am not one to sign up for surgery without first exhausting all other means.
I have been married for 23 years to a great guy and have 2 beautiful kids, age 14 and 11. They are my rocks. I have been a full time stay at home mom since 2006, after "retiring" from my home based computer consulting business.
I am not looking for medical advice, just support in dealing with a chronic pain condition and exercise advice too. I am trying to focus on the "Can Do" part of my life instead of all of the "Can't Do's".
