Hello, I'm new here, and just starting ANOTHER diet. Every time I lose weightmy hair starts falling out and derails my diet.  I know that I probably need more fat and protein, but does anyone  have any gems of wisdom?

Thanks in advance.

Kathy

Well, I'm glad to know I'm in good company, although I think my problem is a little different than yours.  My mom and grandma had thinning hair and my problem has been getting worse with age (I'm 55), and now that I'm losing weight, it seems to get worse.  I try to keep my nutrition level very high, and I also keep plenty of fat and protein in my diet, so I know it's not that.

I think stress is a contributor.  I have some stressors in my life and I'm working on keeping them under control, but I know I have a ways to go before that happens.

I will do some research and maybe that will help both of us!

1. well first of all I am 5'7" also, and my weight history, three weeks ago I was only 98lbs (I am proud to say a good 7lbs have been added)

2. I just joined calorie count, 5 min ago

3.I am joining because I am young, very young, battling eating disorders and i was sitting by the fire, watching my hair fall out and thought this group could help me deal with what I am going through.

4.  Interesting, hmm... Well I live with a good family that loves and cares for me I have too dogs, and a sister.

I am 37 yrs old, 5'5", 190 lbs.  I was always the skinny kid. A week before I turned 21, I had my son.  I lost the 75lbs I had gained within 7 months.  4 years later, I had my daughter. By the time she was 2, my husband and I had divorced and I lost the last few pounds of the 50lbs I had gained during pregnancy.  When I turned 28, I started working in an office at a desk...and the rest is history.  10 years have passed since then and I am always fighting with my weight (yo-yo'ing between 170 - 195).  I am in the military sometimes wish I could go back to boot camp---was in great shape back then!!!...lol

I am here to change my life.  Not diet. I love food, especially since I live right outside of New Orleans; but seafood is filled with sodium.  I am mostly happy with my life, so don't think I am overly-stressed.  I am active, but not in the right ways...so I need help.  I am a strong believer in self-help; have always done it myself...but I am beyond self-help. Thank God I'm not too embarrassed to say it.

I clicked on the Advice tab and went down to Experts and there's a whole section on Hair Loss, the one thing I have been trying since I read it is evening primrose oil, it is way too soon to tell yet but the articles are full of good advice.

hi i just joined. i never thought my hair loss was related to my weight loss till i just read a comment here. is that true? i've lost about 25lbs over the last year and had hair loss in that same time period. Is this group only for girls? anyways, i'm 25, work in the life insurance field and am trying to get my body to a decent place. i'm always been overweight. right now i'm 5'9'' 200ish. was up to 230 about a year ago. went as low as 190 and have put some weight back on. rogaine didn't work by the way. any tips?

Hi!  I just joined too.  I'm 43, fairly active, and somewhat discouraged about trying to lose weight, etc.  I've been moderately overweight for the majority of my life.  As for the hair lose issue...  In the past, every time I would do really good with any diet plan, my hair line would start receding and I will find hair everywhere in the house.  I've found that for me if I make sure that I take a multi-vitamin everyday it helps.  Right now I'm using One-A-Day weight conscious with a fish oil supplement too.  I've got all sorts of hair growing back in.  My mother and grandmother both have thinning hair, so I wondered if it was hereditary?

Hi everyone. i just joined calorie count a week ago. I have always been thicker my whole life but have been clinically overweight and battling it since 2004. I am twenty five years old. Also, I have recently experienced hair thinning in the fron of my head and generally all over. I am concerned with this but have been trying to do research to decide what my next action would be. My father and mother have thick manes but my half-brother started losing his hair in his thirties and my full brother when he was twenty six. It may be genetic but they are the only ones in my immediate or closely surrounding family members. I have been in denial and still find myself trying to rationalize what is happening to me, even when I look at old pictures of my once-thick hair. I just recently cried and now I would like some support from others. Sorry, I am wordy too.

Hello everyone!

I joined calorie count 4 days ago.

I am joining because i am participating in a Biggest Loser Challenge in the resort i work at.  Ive always been a decent weight for my age and height, but have always been a bit chubby and probably not the healthiest person.

I have battled with an eating disorder in secret for almost 4 years now, and in those years i have seen my hair go from full and thick, to quite fine and thining in some areas and i am very self concious about it. The fact that i know i am doing this to myself makes me very embarassed. i belive aswell that stress has been a huge factor, and it also causes stress.

I am hoping that doing this challenge, and involving myself with this forum and website will help me to be a happier person. I am re-teaching myself how to be healthy.. and love myself for the body i have.

If anyone out there has been in my situation and has hairloss due to eating disorders...i would appreciate any encourgement. Aswell, if you have tried anything to help with regrowth and have had success.. please share :)

Hello All!

I am new to the group and a friend from work told be about this new website.  I love it! I always journal my exercise and food intake by paper. I create it and i carry it everywhere. Well it's 2009 and now instead of being on facebook all day I know I am going to find joy in calorie counting...

1. History with weight loss: I love to exercise.  I learned how to love it so I do it as much as possible
2. History with Calorie Count: Just started
3. Reason for joining this group: I have alopecia (areta) and I would love to know more people that have it and also to hear some good suggestions on how to manage it.
4. Some interesting details about yourself, such as your job, your family, your pets and your interests: Working out!

Hi, my name is Shane I live in Cleveland. I just joined calorie count to help with my weight. Iv been a wrestler since 5th grade I am just starting college now. I'm used to cutting weight such as 20lbs in 15 days. I'v noticed that i had widows peak my sophomore year in highschool and I'v been slowly losing hair since. I have a patch on the back, of the top of my head and I'm only 20 with NO history of baldness in any of my family.

Hello I am Jason, I am 35 and I am quite sure I will be bald by 45.  But I will be healthy and fit to go with it :)

hello just joined. I am 22, lost weight relatively quickly and without noticing was depriving myself of enough fats and proteins (hence malnutrition). So my hair is falling out (it was always thick and curly and wild and free and I loved it) but time and a balanced diet will be the only cure (curse time and its absurdity!!!).

I guess I came here to share and To know there's others out there. Hairloss is difficult no matter what the circumstances but female hairloss in particular is less accepted socially and misunderstood. Therefore personally it's almost debilitating in a way and so stressful (not to mention the guilt in vanity- ha). I have to haul myself away from a depressed state every time I see how thin my hair has got or the collection of hairs that gather on my clothes when I brush.

Thank god for HATS! they are wonderful (especially the extravagant ones- as there is no need to hide away) and to any of you who have the balls or the ability to walk bald and proud hats off to you!!! I may have to walk that path too and it'll be good to know I'm not the only one :)

No No No stress sha lala

Best tip ever- focus on other attributes that stand out- like cleopatra eyes.

I am 43 and have had a problem w/weight all my life.  "yo-yo syndrome".  1 month ago I had the lapband procedure.  My weight presurgery was 245 and height 5'5.  I am now at 221.  I have been using calorie count since 7/31.

I joined this group because although my hair has always been thin and baby fine, it started to "shed" a few months ago.  I started a new career,  new job & a coworker noticed it on my clothes.  I thought nothing of it.  In the last few months I suffered a severe ankle sprain that took me out of work, and before my wt loss surgery, I noticed severe hair loss in the drain and even more when I comb out my hair.  Just running my fingers through my hair I get alot.  It is becoming noticeable along the side and in the back.

I have been using Biotin shampoo and sublingual supplements for about 6 wks and haven't noticed a difference yet.  I also ordered a topical solution that hasn't arrived yet.  I will let you all know if it works.

I don't know if my hair loss is related to stress, weight loss, diet, hormonal, or hereditary.  It could be all of the above.  I really need to see a dermatologist.  It is very distressing.
