Welcome to the Group
1. History with weight loss:
2. History with Calorie Count:
3. Reason for joining this group:
4. Some interesting details about yourself, such as your job, your family, your pets and your interests:
And now just go ahead and make that first post!
OK, since the rest of you are chicken, I will go first:
1. History with weight loss: I have lost about 25 pounds so far. Still have 45 or so more to go if I want to reach my recommended weight. I have been working at it for almost a year now. Damn menopause! It has been really slow.
2. History with Calorie Count: Not sure what to put here. I have a profile and blogs. I guess the answer is there
3. Reason for joining this group: I just discovered groups, yeah, after 6 months of being a CC member (Maybe they are new?). I thought I would check a few out.
4. Some interesting details about yourself, such as your job, your family, your pets and your interests: Me, huh? I am a computer geek. Work as a database administrator. Married. Grown kids with one stepdaughter still living with us while in college. 1 ancient, decrepit cat. Like I imagine most of this age group will be, my main focus is on improving health and getting myself to the point where I can do the kind of stuff I used to be able to do, maybe even more. I want to be an active, fun grandma (when my kids get around to making me one) and be in good shape to travel when I retire. (I will admit to the occasional fantasy of having a hot bod if I lose enough as well)
OK, lets hear from the rest of you!
-Carol
Ok -- here goes:
I've lost and gained a lot of weight since my first child was born 26 yrs ago. Just joined CC a few days ago, and am thinking it's going to be a big help. When it gets down to it -- it's all about the calories. So I feel like no more excuses if i just count 'em. Not fun, but it will work, I'm thinkin.
I've lost 7.5 lbs in the last 3 weeks. Have about 40 to go to reach my goal. My dear hubby thinks that will be too much, but it would be cool to find out for myself! People never think I weigh as much as I really do. But I feel it. I used to be very active and now that the kids are grown and gone, I'd love to get active again. If my joints will let me ;) hehe.... although I've found that since starting this new way of eating, my joints don't ache near as much. I even went out yesteray and hit the tennis ball for an hour (against the wall) and my shoulder only complained for the night and morning. Feels good now.
I do bookkeeping and sit at the computer way too much for my health. Right now I am babysitting our first grandchild (1yr old) who will also be wanting to play with a more fit grandma. All winter I lug in 40lb. bags of pellets for the pellet stove and each time I think how much easier I could move if I didn't ALWAYS carry around that much extra weight on my body.
I'm not sure how these groups work. I'm still learning the site. Looks like this one is just getting going unless I'm missing something. Anyway -- greetings to ya'll and hope to hear how it's going for you!
This may be a dumb question, but I don't see how a person starts a new "thread" or "discussion" or whatever you call a new subject.
Can someone enlighten this newbie?
Hi everybody,
My name is Matt and I am an alcoholic.
Wait a minute, no sorry, I'm not an alcoholic, I am a fat guy and I am 55 (years old not pounds). ![]()
I have put weight on very gradually over 30 years and eventually got to 350 pounds. I had a couple of false starts with dieting but CC seems to be sustainable. I joined 2 months ago and I have lost 36 lbs.
I do bookkeeping too. How about that! I am divorced and live alone - I know that sounds sad but it isn't really : )
I am also serious about enjoying this gift of life, so I practice the techniques of Self Knowledge taught by Prem Rawat ( www.wordsofpeace.org ). They are coooool!
I have another 144 lbs to lose but I feel quite positive about it. I walk about 50 mins each day and I have started doing about 45 mins of physical yoga. I know from experience that it is great for flexibility and energy.
I hope members of this group will be able to compare notes about successful weightloss strategies, how to overcome plateaus etc.
1. History with weight loss: All my weight gain was after a devastating accident that resulted in surgery and rehab... little movement on my part. Various other factors have made it easier to gain than lose, but I have been dieting since 1998. I started by joining Weight Watchers At Work, but transfered and didn't find a new group. I then joined TOPS in 2004... left due to illness...and rejoined in 2007. I have lost 20 lbs and counting. I use Calorie Count casually, but like the fact it is here and sends great emails.
2. History with Calorie Count: I joined in 2007, have used it on/off as time permits. I really like the site and keep in touch with the emailed feature items.
3. Reason for joining this group: I joined "to reach goal weight by" and saw that most of the members there were 20 something with young kids, etc. and felt that I might do better with my own age group.
4. Some interesting details about yourself, such as your job, your family, your pets and your interests: I am involved with church and TOPS as far as groups go. I live rurally and raise chickens and a garden. I currently have 6 cats and 2 dogs. I hope to give away 3 cats tomorrow. The chickens provide eggs and the garden provides veggies... I just go to the store for bread, milk and fish/meats. ...OH, yeah... and kitty litter!
I am married, no children and like the computer. I used to teach computer softwares, it is the first thing I turn to when I get up in the morning. Living rural, I shop and research everything here. I hope to meet some of you soon.
Linda
Hello all - I've never joined a group before and would like to try it, though I'm terribly inconsistent with reading postings.
I just turned 54 (AAAhh!!) and...
1. History with weight loss: lost 75 pounds 5 years ago. I finally managed to get my weight back to normal with a pretty no-brainer approach: eat less, exercise more. The 75 extra pounds came from years of going on diets. Over the last year, stress and other things have caused me to eat less carefully and be a little less consistent with my workout routines and... 15 pounds found there way back. I'm pretty active when it comes to lifting weights and cardio, but my job has me sitting in front of a computer most of the day. I found recently when i was taking some time off renovating my basement what a pleasure it can be to do physical work all day.
2. History with Calorie Count: started checking out the site to keep track of my calorie consumption, check out workout options and so on around Christmas. Having to lose a small amount of weight seems to be much harder than the 75 pounds, if you can believe it. The motivation just isn't the same: vanity not health. It may seem like a trivial concern, but I live in fear of being that overweight again. I have managed to whittle about 5 of those extra pounds off and hope I can get the rest gone too. It just seems to take forever.
3. Reason for joining this group: I have become interested in what other people are doing for weight loss and strenght training, but like some of you others, often find the discussions revolve around people with very dissimilar ages, backgrounds and concerns. It does seem that there are a lot of under thirties out there who are trying to become skeletally thin.
4. Some interesting details about yourself, such as your job, your family, your pets and your interests: Well, i don't know how interesting it is, but I work as an Architect, though I would really like to do something more in the Arts. I have three cats, a tank full of fish and a Tarantual spider. One of my cats is insane. I'm separated, and I spend most of my spare time these days renovating my house and dabbling in cake decorating. (No, I don't eat a lot of cake - I give them away.)
I live in Canada and have close access to some of the best outdoor activities you can imagine: hiking, cycling, skiing, snow-shoeing, canoing - you name it. In addition, the city I live in (Calgary) has a terrific arts community with great theatre, ballet, opera, music and galleries. All of these things interest me, and I'm trying to work in more winter sports. Downhill skiing and I just don't work, but I'm trying everything else.
I'd like to compare strategies, successes and find motivation for those days when it doesn't seem worth the bother.
Hi I'm Jenna and I'm a foodaholic. I love to eat. Ive been on a diet since I was a teenager and as I have got older it is just harder.
I live in West Africa in a very remote part of Africa near the Niger river and it is very difficult to get all the things you need to keep weight loss down. I have a very active husband who loves his food and never puts on an ounce.
We are farmers.
We grow most of our fruits and veggies and it ts real pioneering stuff here.
I joined the group because people always have new ideas and are very inspirational, and it also gets lonely out here sometimes.
The group sounds as if it could be fun
Hi ! My name is Janel. I am 53 years old living in sunny Florida.
1- I have been pretty active and thin my whole live. In the last 5 years, whenever something prevents me from being active (illness or injury), I gain weight. In 2007, I broke my foot. I spent 3 months on the couch and gained 20 lbs. I was working to take that off. It's a very slow process for me! Then, this past February, I tore my achilles tendon and had to spend another 3-4 months on the couch! This time I gained 22 lbs in 4 months! I didn't have a chance to lose the weight I gained from my broken foot! Since I'm usually so active, I eat a lot to feed that high activity level. When activity stops, I don't stopped eating. Then, I become an emotional eater.
2- I joined Calorie Count last year. Unfortunately, with a couple injuries, I weight more now than I did when I joined!
3-I've been frustrated with dieting and weight loss and I think being a part of a group will help me see others go thru the same things I go thru. It may make it easier to share the struggles and help each other get thru the struggles. So, I'm looking for help and I'm looking to help.
4-I love running, tennis, scuba diving, and biking. I was running 30-35 miles a week before I tore my achilles tendon. Now, I'm back up to 10 miles a week. I'm working on increasing. I played tennis 10 times a week before my injury (yeah, that's a lot!), now I'm back up to 4 times a week. You might think it would be easy to lose weight with all this activity, but it's not fo me. I eat a lot to sustain that high level and intensity of activity. I also do some weight lifting, mostly to help my other activities. I have to stay real active because I have arthritis settling into my middle-aged body. If I stop my activities, the aches and pains take over!
I have 2 birds for pets. They keep me sane. Yes, I talk to them, they talk to me. They are my children. My husband tolerates them, at best.
Glad to meet y'all!
Janel
Hi!
I have never joined a group before. I am usually a lurker. So this is something new to me. Not sure how active I will be in the group.
In my younger years, it was pretty easy to loose weight whenever I wanted to. But, as I got older, it became more difficult (who new). A couple of years ago, my son went to a military academy for 6 weeks and I decided to take that opportunity to change my lifestyle. My husband joined me at that time and we both lost a lot of weight and kept each other honest. I did this using the 6-week body makeover system. What a great system, but pretty restrictive for us being on the go a lot! But it taught me how to eat healthily and I still use many of the same recipes and ideas today.
Last year, my dad got sick and I traveled back and forth on weekends to visit him in the hospital. Then more travels for the funeral. This caused me to loosen up and not follow the guidelines as much as I should have. So I slowly, put some weight back on. Since Christmas, I have been trying to get that weight back on and I have trouble keeping at it.
So I found CC a couple of weeks ago. I like tracking my calories and exercise and right now it is helping. Hopefully, I can keep at it.
I think this is long enough for now. I won't add anything else for now.
Thanks for listening. Hopefully, we can all help each other stay on track.
Trish ...
Hello!
I have never really joined a group before so this is all new to me. Unforunately gaining weight is not new to me !
It started when I was 9 years old and gained 30 pounds in three months after my sister died. I managed to lose it during 8th grade and on into high school. I got married at 18 and had five kids by the time I was 26. After my last one was born I was in the store and someone I hadn't seen for awhile asked me when I was going to have the baby and he was 3 weeks old!! I got ticked off and lost 50 pounds. Then I quit smoking for 7 months and gained 70!
Needless to say over the years I have lost and gained but I have truly been way too heavy for the last 20 years and now I am prediabetic and my knees are shot. I was working out for a few years but am back to being a couch potato so I want to get back on track.
Ironically, I am a school counselor and work with young people in a vocational/educational program. I am married and have five grown children and seven grandchildren. My youngest grandchild was born 4 months premature at 24 weeks and is now 6 months old. He had a huge brain bleed and we don't know what his future will be. He started out at 1 lb. 10 3/4 ounces and is now a whopping 9 pounds 6 ounces. It has been a real roller coaster ride and I have gained 20 pounds in the midst of it all!!
My husband and I have a dog, Bella and a snotty cat named Itty Bitty. They pretty much own the house and us. We would be lost without them. THe house got pretty quiet after the kids left!
I have used calorie count to do just that -log my food etc. and I just joined calorie count plus.
I want to know how others in my age group are losing weight and have some things in common with. I remember joining a tops group years ago and all the ladies were older and my friend and I could drop weight like crazy and they struggled. Now I understand how hard it is to lose weight at this age!!!
I am pretty challenged with the computer but would like to get to know others who are in the fight to lose weight like me!
Teckla
I have been looking for a group that was over 50 that I hope I can identify with better than some of the younger people. We may all want to lose weight but I do feel that sometimes the issues are different.
1. History with weight loss: I am 5'3" and my top weight has been 148. Today I weigh 143. About 8 years ago I weighed 118 lbs. That may have been a little thin but I loved it. Then my Mother died and I just lost my motivation to stay thin. Now I don't want to get back to 118 but I think between 125 and 130 would be reasonable.
2. History with Calorie Count: I have been an active member off and on for the last couple of years. I can't remember the first time I joined. I just recently started with CC Plus.
3. Reason for joining this group: I want to discuss weight loss and exercise with people my own age. People who might understand about arthritic knees.
4. Some interesting details about yourself, such as your job, your family, your pets and your interests: I have one husband of 36 years and two grown children and three grandchildren. Love to cook and grill out. I work in the field of Gerontology. No pets. I guess my hobbies include gardening and reading. I would love to pursue my interest in cakes (wedding cakes specifically.)
I sent in a question to Ask Mary...Why do I gain weight on 1200 calories a day?...and actually got a reply that made sense. She said even though I am only slightly over weight I probably had a high body fat ratio that takes less calories to maintain. She suggested a treadmill to help up my exercise time. I think I am going to pursue her suggestion.
I look forward to learning more about all of you.
Greetings from Moorpark, California (just over the hill from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library). My name is Norma Jean (two words) and am 54 years old.
1. History with weight loss: I have been a yo-yo dieter since Age 21. Every time I lose weight I gain ten more back. I am 5'11" and I do carry my weight well to a certain extent. Last year, in June, I decided I was going to have weight loss surgery (my doctor feels this is the only way for me to get weight off). Because of the insurance, I had to be monitored basically for 6 months by a nutritionist. Unfortunately, as I started to lose weight my knees and muscles started giving out on me. Long story, by January 2008 I had lost 66 pounds but I had to change medications and I have put not only that weight back on but much more. I am back to square one now that medication has once again been changed and am now after a year just starting to be able to walk with a walker a small distance.
2. History with Calorie Count: I started logging my foods on August 11th. It has helped me see how much I consume and the caloric content. It has helped me reexamine what and how much I eat. I love the tools and learning my way around the various sites. I also love encouraging people and helping them see the best in situations.
3. Reason for joining this group: For encouragement and meeting new people.
4. Some interesting details about yourself, such as your job, your family, your pets and your interests: I have beautiful blue eyes - nickname 'ol blue eyes or "Marilyn". I am a Born Again Christian (1975) - no specific affiliation to a "church". I have a sense of humor and love having fun. Excellent organizational & phone skills, self-starter, reliable, dependable, positive work ethic - oh wait this isn't for a job application! Yes, I am unemployed at this time. Unfortunately because of the mortgage business I was laid off 3 times within 18 months because the businesses filed bankruptcy or closed their doors for processing loans. I have not worked since March 2007 - and miss it! With my health issues (see New Beginning - New Members Forum - August 11th) I am starting over physically, mentally and recognizing spiritually. I have 2 children (actually one is my husband of 22 years and a son 20 years old - I just sometimes cannot tell them apart they are so alike - best buddies!). I have 2 Shi Tzus - Babe and Butters - both brothers from the same litter 4 years old. They are such a joy! My interests are still trying to figure that out! I like surfing the computer - playing games especially scrabble or word games. I played softball until age 36 when my knees finally gave out. I started at 2nd base and moved to 3rd because of my throwing arm. I had a nice batting average too! I like playing Volleyball. I do read - love crime stories. Just starting to maybe add painting as a hobby. Working on a couple of ocean scenes paint by numbers.
I just turned 58 on July 12...whatever happened to the 60's love child? I found that in the two years since hitting menopause (now that really should be a 4 letter word) that I have been gaining weight like crazy. For whatever reason (I like to blame hormones), diets lost nothing...even the strictest ones... and only resulted in a higher weight when I went back to eating again. When I moved from Florida to Georgia in March of this year, I donated all of my smaller size clothes figuring this was the weight I was meant to be. I discovered a Y within a mile of my house and decided to join in May. They were great. They set up an exercise program for me and monitored me for 6 weeks. They also gave me a healthy diet with food exchanges to follow. I cannot say the pounds just fell off but slowly I have managed to drop 30 pounds in 3 months with the goal of 30 more to hit my ideal weight. I really miss those old clothes now since everything is now too big on me.
I was tracking my daily diet and calories on a word processing program when I literally fell over Calorie-count looking for the number of calories in a food. What a wonderful program this is to monitor not only calories but to make sure you are nutritionally balanced each day. I have faithfully logged my daily intake for a little over two months now. I read where it has been proven that people who log what they eat lose more than those that don't (no cheating I guess).
I think this group will understand that we are no longer teenagers who can cut back what they eat for one day and drop 5 pounds. It is a long, hard process to lose weight at this age and keep it off. I have been pretty motivated for the three months I have been doing this but everyone gets discouraged (like when you go 2 weeks without losing an ounce and you have been soooo good).
I lost my husband to Lou Gehrig's disease 6 1/2 years ago and lost so much weight from not eating, I almost disappeared...not healthy. My kid's all left and I was alone, was downsized from my job, lost my health insurance and was refused for any coverage and went into depression. Nearly 3 years later I now am starting a great job (another over 50 phenomenon, no one wants to hire you), found a great companion, have lost 30 pounds and feel better than I have in probably a decade. See there is life after 50.
hi my name is Kei , am a ex pat, (male) single , living in europe, aged 57, I am a Th:D and work part time has a housing manager, thats a jack of all trades master of none, but i am handy-man. Hello, I'm Louisa, high school social studies teacher at a juvenile justice school in SC. I've had my first weight loss in 30 years (30 lbs) over the past 1.5 years, using hypnotherapy, walking & strength training...and drinking water, regularly, for the first time in my life! Now I'm sort of stuck, still using hypnotherapy, but having a harder time getting to the gym 3 times a week. I bought a Trek bicycle recently, with the goal of riding to work (30 miles round-trip) at least once a week by next spring. I need to get my weight down to help with really arthritic knee.
I lost significant weight before my first pregnancy by counting calories & really measuring & recording what I eat. Being busy raising 2 sons with ADHD & going to grad school meant sacrificing, so....too many high carb quick meals, no time to exercise, stress and my personal favorite: "Food is the answer for any emotional question". Therapy for depression has greatly helped that type of thinking, yet the anti-depressant I take (which also REALLY helps) means weight gain/hard to lose.
I'm really glad I found this site because I believe that measuring, recording and reflecting on what you eat can change some destructive food habits. I hope to return to Great Britain after my first trip there last year. Since I want to make a walking tour, this plan is going to be my tool for getting there & seeing everything I didn't see before!
I have slowly gained about 180 lbs over the past 30 years. I got up to 305 (I'm 5' 2") and couldn't do anything. I was tired all the time, hurting all over all the time, depressed, etc. I had RNY gastric by-pass two months ago. I have lost 55 lbs since surgery. During pre-op testing I was diagnosed with sleep apnea and now wear a c-pap every night. I am working on starting new healthy habits. I try to work out at least every other day with a goal of working out every day at some kind of aerobic exercise. Currently I mostly do Wii fit for 30 to 45 min. at a time. I especially like the yoga. I try to stay under 800 calories a day right now while I am still healing. I also cannot have any sugar, alcohol, very low fat and low fiber foods at the present. I am supposed to keep my protein intake around 60-80 grams/day. Needless to say my diet is kind of lopsided at the moment especially since I can only take in 1/2 cup at a time. It's a whole new learning experience. I am a nurse by profession. I've tried umpteen diets over the years. I lose some then gain it and more back. I'm hoping this will help turn things around for good. I am looking for a group my own age with similar interests and concerns.
1) History with weight loss: Both my parents were fat and my younger sister is fat so I have both genes and family background against me. I have gained and lost a lot of weight throughout my life.
I am a successful dieter in that once I start a diet I usually lose weight on a fairly steady basis. However, once I reach my goal weight it is hard for me to maintain my focus. So I have slowly gained back most of the weight that I have lost.
2) History with Calorie Count: I have been using this service for a week. I can't believe that this is all free! I am realistic enough to know that everything entered on this site is probably being data mined by advertisers but I really don't care.
I am feeling really happy because I lost five pounds in one week! But this is due to my determination. I use the tools here mainly to help me keep my focus on eating within my restricted calorie limits and most importantly on making sure that I exercise at least thirty minutes a day.
(3) Reason for joining group: For support naturally!
(4) Details about myself: I am an attorney and live in Brooklyn, New York. I have a dog, Zoe and two cats. I have been involved in a monogamous relationship with a guy for 14 years but we are not married--and I really don't want to be married! Overall, I am pretty happy with my life and very grateful for my blessings.
Hi. I'm Sue -living in the UK.
In my early 50's and decided it was time to do something about the flab. After all I'm supposed to be one of the new "40's"
Have always struggled to keep the weight in check but in the last year or so it's become impossible. I go to the gym 3 times a week (30 minute circuits) but although I'm losing inches & finding muscles again -haven't been able to lose an ounce. I found this site and thought it was a good way to count the calories & maybe get some support & tips from people in my age group.
I'm 5' 4" & weigh 175 lbs. 160 lbs was my best weight - any lower and my face looks long & drawn. I thought my daily calorie intake was about 1600 but I don't eat small and often. I tend to have breakfast-lunch-dinner and nothing in between. I started a log 3 days ago and found that I'm actually averaging 1200 calories daily but it's also helped to see what I'm actually eating
I work full time as an Supply & Inventory manager -married - no children.
I enjoy gardening, reading,photography & painting
So looking forward to some fun and interesting chat
Hi, my people! (Actually at 59 and counting, I may have to join the 60's and up group next year...)
I agree with some of the posters above that our age group has particular challenges, which the 20-somethings, and even the 30- and 40-s don't share. Actually I was devastated ten years ago when I went to lose the weight I had gained and it didn't fall off! It didn't scrape off! It didn't peel off!! It's stuck...yuck.
I have only tried weight loss strategies I felt were nutritionally sound and safe. Maybe because I'm old and experienced, I just am not ready for anything radical anymore. (see my bio). So Weight Watchers has a really good rep, I have known some successful members, and there are local meetings. But, no, I couldn't deal with it. I tried an insurance-sponsored online program, and I lost 26 pounds, but gained it all back when the program ended.
CC+ seems to be here for the long haul--and the long haul is my haul! I expect to have another 20-30 good years (and then maybe 10 not-so-wonderful years, but years nonetheless!). In my head I understand I can't have my beautiful 20-year-old body (skin, bones, organs, enthusiasm...) back. Sigh. But in my heart, I know that fantasy is still lurking. I have many minor health problems (good genes) that I believe will be reduced or eliminated by weight loss.
What triggered my serious searching for a program that will work is arthritis that interfered with my favorite sport: walking. I am finding that I enjoy free weights and I learned to love my stationary bike, too. I love food, love to cook and eat, and need to be aware of how much and what kind of food I eat.
CC+ tools, especially the burn meter and the "analyser" that breaks down my calories into proteins, carbs, fat, fiber, etc., are really wonderful helps to me. I tend to analyze until I am paralyzed. But the biggest help of all is having y'all to "blog" to, to read and understand what I'm fighting for. It means so much that you are here.
Of course, I think ALL my details are not just "interesting" but fascinating. This is an opinion not everyone shares, although I think it may be a fairly common perspective. I raised my 20-something children alone after leaving their father for good and sufficient reasons. They turned out great, and they love me and their sorry-ass father, too. I work in an office in front of a computer, and Thank God for it! I wouldn't be much good to anyone if I couldn't do it sitting down. I led a wild and crazy youth in the 60's, and only calmed down enough to get married and have kids. I'm guessing my early life didn't prepare me to choose wisely, but I'm learning as I go.
I have found a great deal of growth and awareness in a program of recovery for the friends & families of alcoholics. As a long-time member of Al-Anon, I became familiar with the huge benefits of sharing, openness, self-honesty and CHANGE! Oh yes, I know I must change! I try to change my poor eating habits by substituting good ones. I love these groups and plan to be active in this one and the Healthy Cooking group, too.
See ya in the wind!
