1. History with weight loss:  Quick smoking in 1979, been fighting the bulge ever since.  Did pretty well while on active duty (Navy), but after I retired it got tough.  Signed up for a Johns Hopkins weight loss study last month so now I have some direction.

3. Reason for joining this group: I'm in the self directed group for the JHU study, so all the help I can get is welcome.

4. Some interesting details about yourself, such as your job, your family, your pets and your interests:  Widowed, engaged, government contractor, one dog, hiking, camping, geocaching.

I'm Leslie and I live in Oregon.  I just turned 50 this summer, am going through menopause, am too busy at work, and live with my husband, 18 yo daughter and two dogs. I have three older children and a granddaughter.  All of my relatives live within 40 miles of each other--interesting mostly because my family is from Michigan, and little by little, we have all moved here.

At work, I am a business analyst for a human services agency, and spend most of my time at a computer.  I used to take the stairs to my desk when I worked on the 2nd floor, but now that I am on 5, I am an elevator addict.

When I'm not working, I love to camp (Oregon has some of the best camping spots I have ever seen), to garden ( have a pretty large lot, and have planted some 75 trees and shrubs in the past 15 years), to read (Sherry Tepper and Charles DeLint are current favorites, and I love a well-written children's book), and of course, I fool around on the computer.

The weight my body and eating habits really like is around 140, which has been my most stable weight.  My goal is 120.  The 140 comes from a pretty good base diet of lean protein, whole grains, lots of fruits and vegetables and regular trips to Dairy Queen for a medium Butterfinger blizzard and a few other assorted indulgences.

I have weighed everything from 110 - 190 for the past 20 years.  My best success in losing or maintaining my weight has been with either Weight Watchers or with Atkins, once a reasonable level of carbs has been reintroduced.  I am currently in the induction phase of Atkins, as I have about $1500 (shopping spree with unexpected money!) worth of fall and winter clothes that do not fit, and the cool weather is on it's way.

The thing about Atkins is the high fat--I think that watching my calories would be a helpful addition to my plan.  It's really easy for me to get carried away with high-fat dairy, especially.

I am hoping for some real support in this group.  I have joined other on-line weight loss groups and found many of the comments to be high school clique-ish and snarky, with lots of in jokes and mean comments to others. So far, what I've read here, lurking about, gives me hope that this will be a pleasant group.

I belong to Curves, but have not gone since early July due to business trips and vacations.  This is the last day of my vacation and the business trips are over, so I plan to get off my fanny and get going.  I am also interested in running, but the whole idea of that is scary.  If there is anyone who could provide some advice for a brand-new runner wannabe, I would appreciate it.

My name is Susan but I also go by Susie. I am a stay at home wife and artist. I quit work ten years before the usual retirement age, making me 55. I am usually sitting at a table making jewelry or doing art. I have always been too heavy, even as a child, perhaps because every problem was solved with a Fudgecicle. I don't like exercise as a general rule, but have just started doing Slim In Six. It is not easy, but it is doable.

It's nice to meet everyone. My interests, other than art and jewelry include reading, blogging, watching tv, answering questions on yahoo and taking the best care of me and my hubby that I can.

Hi - I am a middle school computer teacher - my second career - I was a secretary for 20 years before that.  I have a wonderful husband who is a barber (he does all my cuts and color!) and two kids, a daughter who is an elementary teacher and a son in college.  We love boxers, we have a 5-year-old named Abby.  My hobbies include reading, quilting and cooking.

I've been steadily getting heavier and heavier since I was 25 and had my first child.  My best friend and I have always supported each others weight loss successes and failures.  For the past 5 years we have been walking at least 2 miles a few times a week - but we weren't losing.  So we decided that counting calories and keeping diet journals would be the best way.  Being a techy kind of person, I went online and found this great place.  I love the food and exercise logs, I love the forums and all the advice.   My goal is to lose 40 pounds.  I'll be 51 in 3 weeks - I've decided that this is the year to get my health back.

Hi all,

I'm Kay and I am new to this site,  I was leary of joining but then thought what do I have to lose but more weight !!!!

I am a traveling Occupational Therapist, which means I move every 13 weeks.  Usually it's a great change and very  exciting to discover new place, and learn about the health care system in that particular area.  At times it's very stressful, this being one of those times.  It has been a very long time that I haven't known someone, or had faimly somewhere close to where I have taken as assignment.   This current assignment may be more on the stressful side - I am not busy at work - which I miss a great deal- the community is small and rather isolated.  I had to drive 100 miles to a bookstore yesterday., needless to say some of my favorite past times like shopping, museums and antiquing are not available anywhere near here.  The result of all this change is it's hard to stay consistant and motivated on my weight loss journey.

I have gained and lost a gazillion pounds over the past 30 years, but I am determined to stay on course this time.  i have lost 45 pounds in the last 4 months,( and want to lose 40 more),  but my progress is slowing down a bit - probably a combo of less activity, the wonder time of menopause and increased isolation.  ( This small community is really closed to outsiders).  But enough of the excuses,  I discovered this site today and love the calorie counter.  I stayed on track all day with this.  It must be my competitive side that wanted to get an "A" on my nutritional choices - well what ever works.

I have great hopes that I will utilize this site and continue on this weight loss journey, I am not a joiner by nature - I have certainly never joined anything over the internet before, but I decided to take a risk.  Here's to good time, good luck and healthy choices for all of us.

I'm new to the group today. I've lost 10 pounds with CC since late July and have about 30 to go. Had good luck with Adkins in the past but a bit of that weight has crept back on. I'm trying to stem the creep by counting calories as well as eschewing bread, pasta, rice, and high carb veg.

I had put on only to discover I was actually under-eating (900-110 calories a day - not intentional reflux and small appetite) upped calories and gained another 4 poundsUndecided and since Jan I am down 6.6 poundsSmile. Hello from Texas!

History with Weight Loss: I was "normal" weight until I was about 25 when I guess my metabolism just changed.  All the women in my family were overweight and I felt so superior!  Slowly I added weight until last year I reached 250 pounds, I went down to 240 shortly thereafter but kept fighting to loose weight.  I started working out last year and each time I started my right knee would hurt really bad and I would stop for a week.  I finally went to an ortho doc and he scoped it and found arthritis.  Since then (June) I have been determined to get my weight down and improve my health and mobility.  I am down to 218 today.

History with Calorie Count:  About 3 months but I don't keep it up every day.

Reason for joining this group:  Hoping this group will help me with accountability and place to turn when I am feeling weak.  My immediate goal is to get under 200 pounds.  After that I will regroup and set another goal.

Some interesting details about myself, job, family, pets and interest:  I am a travel agent and love to travel.  I work part time but am very busy with all my other "projects" and church.  I have been married to a wonderful man for almost 22 years.  We don't have any children of our own but are very close to our nieces.  One of our neices is getting married next year and I a helping her plan her wedding.  Fun!

Hi, I am Alan. I have had type 2 diabetes for 8 years. I was surfing the web in July, looking for info on carbs and came across this site.

Reason for joining this group:I am 54

About me: I work for a snack food manufacturing plant.

Hi,

Sounds like you are on an interesting journey.  I have been up and down with my weight and am going to keep on the path this time.  I have been struggling with my emotions since starting my new plan.  I have to find another comfort and haven't found it yet.  Exercising helps but late at night is the worst time for me.  I want to eat to avoid my anxiety.

Moving is very stressful and it seems you are doing that a bit.  I wish you good luck in you weight loss and life.

I am in Houston and the heat and humidity is awful here too. Although today we had an exceptionally nice day with low humidity and temp at about 90.  So we had our dinner on the patio this evening.

Let me know how you are.

Molly

Just joined CC a few days ago, and am happy to report a 6-lb weight loss. Of course, I have 100+ to go, and am well experienced with the lose 20, gain 25 yo-yo's. So nothing to write home about yet!

My name is Maria. My husband and I are currently living and working in Russia, with emphasis on the working part. That means sitting in front of a computer screen for 50-60 hours/week, and then sitting in front of the TV the rest of my waking hours. As you can see, I am not an exercise fan, and would much rather read or cross-stitch than go for a walk. We have one son attending law school in Texas, and I miss him and Texas a bunch!

I celebrated both my 50th birthday and 30th wedding anniversary this year, and have decided it's the perfect time to begin the next stage of my life. I've been overweight for at least 20 of those 30 years, and I think my husband deserves to have a wife smaller than him for at least a couple of years :-)

I want to permanently lose this weight to look better and FEEL better (physically and emotionally). Sounds like many of you are better at managing your weight than I have been over the years, so I look forward to learning from you.

I have had a very nice time reading all the posts on this part of the site. The group seems just right!

My name is Sandra. I just joined CC+ yesterday -- and three groups. It's the first time I've gotten involved in this kind of activity : I've never been active on blogs or chat rooms. So, it's all still new.

As a teen I was about 10# overweight...lost it all and then some in college. Got married at 19; Daughter #1 @ 24 and #2 @ 31. Each time I'd lose all the weight + 10#, only to gain it back in intervening years. I've been between 190 and 200 for the past 20+ years.

I'm joining this group for the obvious reason that I fit the category for the moment...in 18 months I won't! I do hope there will be some demarcation between 60 and 80 year olds; there is a difference!

Most of my adult life was spent as a stay-at-home mom. During our 36-yr marriage, our family had more major moves than I liked: 14 yrs in Portland, OR; 7 yrs in SF Bay Area; 7 years in southern CA; 18 months in Belleville, TX (85 miles w of Houston). For the past 9 years I've lived in a "sub-rural" area near Lexington, KY on a pretty little property.

At 50, I was diagnosed with diabetes. At 53, went back to school to earn a degree in Dietetics. In the middle of my Registered Dietitian internship (2 years ago), my husband was killed in an accident. To say the least it's been a bit of a bit.

Right now I live in my barn studio as my house is being renovated. I'm a bit isolated and must really be hungry for friends because I've been on CC off and on for the last 14 hours! I found the site when researching for carb counting...couldn't lay my hands on my book -- and also doing web research on finding an entry level job. So, go figure! This is the best site I've found on the web...that it's free is unbelieveable.

I mentioned that I have 2 daughters. My older daughter (34) lives in CA at the moment, contemplating a move back to the Portland, OR area. My younger daughter (27) lives in Lexington and works in the horse industry. I envy those of you with grandchildren...I'm about ready to adopt some! As it is, I need to content myself caring for my pets. I have two dogs, Bitsy (border collie) and Toby (shepherd mix), as well as two cats, JC (short for Julius Caeser) and Isabelle. I usually have 3 or 4 other neighbor dogs visiting during the day. I feel like doggie daycare!

I like working with wood, sewing/quilting, and gardening and am a voracious reader. I'm a trained classical vocalist and derive great enjoyment from listening to and making music. Although I am a bit of a homebody, I also like to travel. I would love to be able to live in Great Britian for a year.

I think I've written enough for now -- time for some shut eye.

This seems like a very gracious group. It will be an adventure to get to know you.

Hi all

I live in the UK and found this site through reading the New York Times on line. I have a brother in Houston and enjoy keeping up with things Stateside.

I am 54 and one of four brothers and we all battle with our weight - its in the genes. We are all on medication for high blood pressure too. I had colon cancer 18 months ago, caught it early and had keyhole surgery to remove it (and 8 inches of intestine!) I am really thinking about what I eat much more carefully and this site has given me the tools to bring my weight down by 20 lbs, as of today. Just 6 more to go to my goal (157lbs). I will be back to what I weighed when I left college 32 years ago. Trouble is that I clearly am not going to be the same shape! I need to go to the gym but its too expensive.

So this will be my next goal. I am getting fitter through walking everywhere. Take the car to the supermarket for the big shop once a week but try to walk briskly every day for about an hour. So far that has worked for weight loss. I have a real problem with backpain so have to  be careful with exercise. Now I have to devise a way of toning up cheaply.

I was married for 10 years, divorced, no kids and have lived with my wonderful partner for 23 years. Spend most time renovating this big old Edwardian house and out on my motorbike. Taught art for 22 years, inspected schools for four years, now sort of retired. Glad to meet you all.

Hi all!  I've been lurking for the past few days and finally decided to jump in.  I really think I'm going to enjoy this group but have to admit I've never joined a group before.  In fact, I usually just lurk around.  I don't understand half the stuff on the computer so I'll apologize up front.  I'm 50+ years old, live in Hawaii, married for 33 years, 1 son, 2 granddaughters (6 & 4), a 14-year old mini-poodle and 3 grandfish.  Been yo-yoing practically all my life and have realized that any diet works as long as you stick to it!  And therein lies my problem -- not sticking with it!  I just love food -- all kinds of food!  My taste buds are really keen and I don't know what it means to lose my appetite.  If only I would eat only when I'm hungry.  Hmmmm, what a concept!  Anyways, I've joined so I'm not doing it alone -- need some weight loss buddies to share feelings, encouragement, helpful hints...  I need to lose about 50-60 lbs -- knees and hips are achy, can't do any floor exercises (don't think I'd be able to get back up), high blood pressure and the list goes on.  Soooo good luck to you all and I really look forward to your friendship.  I've decided to strive for mini-goals (10 pound increments) -- what do you think?   I started journaling my food intake a couple days ago (yikes!) and will try to keep that up as I find it helps keep me on track - guilt complex kicks in when you see it in writing.

Hi, just joined yesterday, can't get my photo to work, sorry.  I'm 55 yrs old, have been dieting for years.  I constantly yo yo, I lose 20 lbs and gain back 25 lbs.  Right now I'm at my all time high, 155 lbs +/-.  I haven't got a history yet with CC, but hope this helps keep me stay focused.  Married 30 years, 2 sons (22 & 26), work in real estate.  Love to travel, have been to England every other summer for 25 years.  Missed it this year!  My husband is also overweight and I love him, but somtimes feel overwhelmed at being responsible for everyone's weight control.  I know I have a problem, he barely recognizes he has one.  So I'm trying to prepare fresh foods w/less processing.  But still addicted to pizza, etc.  Thanks for letting me share and hope we all can get motivated and be supportive for each other.

I am 58 years old and a retired teacher. I haven't dieted in my life. Around 2001 my weight was at about 140. Then I was treated for pernicious anemia and finished menopause and my weight went up wildly. Exercise can be a problem as I have fibromyalgia which can be limiting.I started "dieting" about 6 weeks ago when I had a bad spell and couldn't really get around to eat for a couple of days. I figured that I might as well get some good from it! I started writing everything I ate down in a notebook and keeping everything really low calorie.

I found this site when I was looking for the calorie content of a banana on Google. I don't know if it will help but I'm a computer nut so anything that is comp based interests me.

I live alone with a dog (pug) and two cats. I have 2 daughters who each have a daughter. I love reading, gardening ( although fibro limits it now) and, as I said, computer stuff. I work part time as a legal secretary and help with my granddaughters (ages 10 and 1). I love to cook but had to give it up to try dieting since if I cook, I eat. I belong to the local pug owners' group. I like to do T'ai Chi but the local group isn't meeting at a time I can make it this year so I'm trying to do it on my own. It's not as satisfying but it really helps with the firbromyalgia.
