Welcome to the Group
1. History with weight loss:
2. History with Calorie Count:
3. Reason for joining this group:
4. Some interesting details about yourself, such as your job, your family, your pets and your interests:
And now just go ahead and make that first post!
1. History with weight loss: Lost a lot of weight repeatedly over the past 15 years. Gained it back, lost it all over again, gained it back again.
2. History with Calorie Count: Virtually none.
3. Reason for joining this group: Want to meet people who have trouble with weight gain/loss like me. Looking to be challenged by others to do it and to help others in their efforts to loose weight as well.
4. Interests: I am retired, 52 yrs. old. Like movies, books, reading, hiking (when I am thin enough to make the climbs), travel, watching "dancing with the stars", joined a gym and walking the treadmill.
Hi Leslie:
I'm Linda from Phila., 52 years old. I am retired (not wealthy just retired early). I live in the city not a place to go camping but when I am thin enough I love hiking. I am too fat right now to tackle the Pennsylvania trails right now. Looking for encouragement/support to get 180 lbs of excess fat off this 5 ft 3" frame. I go to gym now and walk the treadmill. It helps.
Hi there,
It seems I have been dieting since I was 8 years old and I am 52 now. My mother was obese and father was over weight. Food has been my best friend when things get tough, when I am happy, or just because.
I created an account last year but took no action until today. I am very interested in the nutritional analysis of my food. While limiting calories is good, I need to make sure the nutrition is balanced.
For almost ten years, I had been very active biking and running mostly. The last couple of years has been spotty. I need and want to get active again for more reasons than I can count.
It would be good to get back into the small pants in my closet. Ten pounds will do the trick; twelve pounds would be just a bit better.
Hi everyone:
I don't ever remember thinking of myself as anything but fat. My mom was so worried about me inheiriting the family trait that she had me on skim milk and diet sodas and everything "diet" from the time of my earliest memories. It makes me sad when I look back on pictures of myself as a teen ager and discover that although I felt fat, big, and awkward, I was really tall, elegant, graceful--even pretty.
Only once in my life of perpetual dieting did I ever succeed--that was using Redux, which was subsequently taken off the market. I would gladly take it again, cardiac problems and all, if I could! It worked, and I learned that I was an emotional eater--when my brain was turned off, I could stop eating.
Now I'm 56 years old, a widow, and I weigh 2 pounds less than my lifetime maximum of 275. I have limited income and I'm going to have to be very creative and learn to eat very differently. My knees, hips and back are starting to suffer, sometimes I'm short of breath, and I hate looking in the mirror.
I'm going to do this! I used Calorie Count once before with some limited success, but quit recording out of laziness. This time, I'm going to try to stick with it!
Hello!
My name is Valerie and I am 52 years old. I have struggled with weight off and on for the last 25 years. I have counted calories and carbs and had the most success with the Atkins plan, lost about 30 pounds but have gained that all back plus another 12 pounds. The diet was not something I could sustain long term. I am now just trying to eat a healthy diet - less processed foods, no sodas, more water, trying to cut down on the sweets, etc. The sweets part is hard for me. I am a sugar addict. I don't do too badly while I am at work but in the evenings, on weekends if I just hang around the house, I graze and not always on the healthy stuff. So, I need some moral support in cutting back or cutting out the snacks. I also have fibromyalgia, and sometimes it is a challenge to get the exercise in. There are days when it is just too painful, even though I know the exercise can help with reduction of symptoms over time. I am starting to have issues with my knees. I would really like to get rid of the abdominal fat that has built up over the last 25 years or so.
I just signed up with Calorie Count today. I had heard of it before and am excited to find such an easy free tool to keep track of my calories and my activity level. I think the groups and forums will also be a motivator, as it helps so much when you have someone to be accountable to.0
Like many of the posts I have read, I think it is easier to relate to people in our own age range. We have more similar experiences, probably some of the same health issues.
I am married, have three kids. The youngest is 17 and has borderline Asperger's syndrome and ADHD. I work for a healthcare company's information technology division as a business analyst on clinical software. My hubby of 23 years and and I spend at least one day a week on our Harley, riding around the Tennessee countryside with our riding group. He does not have any problems with weight. I'd like to reduce the amount of additional weight he needs to manage (mine) along with an almost 800 pound motorcycle.
Looking forward to getting to know you all!

HAPPY MONDAY! Today is your new day to start your new life!
Hi,
My name is Lori, I'm 52 yrs old, 5'5" and need to lose 60 lbs. I currently weigh 199 lbs. This is my first post. I started using CC on Oct. 1, 2009. It is a very helpful site, the tools are easy to use and understand and best of all it's free!
I have a hernia that my Dr. will fix when I lose 30 lbs. Fixing it now at my current weight will not be as succesful and the hernia could easily recur. The problem with it is that I can't do normal ab exercises. I walk daily at least 1 mile, I use an elliptical trainer daily for 30 minutes (that's up from 15 on Oct. 1 !) and I push myself to really sweat when I use it. I walk at a pace of 3 miles per hour. Anybody have any suggestions for exercise?
I started to get serious about weight loss in early Sept. I was keeping a journal and looking up everything I ate. When I started this, my suggested calorie intake was 1200 daily (by my surgeon). What a disaster! I gained 3 pounds in two weeks. Then I found CC and counting calories was a lot easier, but I didn't lose any weight the first week and I still gained half a pound! A good indicator has always been the way my clothes fit. Things were not good. I thought that the exercise would at least help. So I decided to cut my calories even further. I now keep it under 1000 and I have finally lost 6 pounds. Everyone keeps telling me that my body will think it is starving and that I'm doing the wrong thing. What else can I do? I don't eat sweets or drink soda. Water has always been my drink of choice! (I live in a desert, water helps.) I try to make food choices that are higher in protien and fiber and low in fat. I limit my carbs by using whole grains and smaller portions of any carb I do have. I eat fresh veggies and fruits and more chicken and fish than red meats.
After all that you would think that losing weight would be a walk in the park. Boy, there sure are a lot of hill in this park! I have decided to walk more. I will do at least 3 miles every day, that's only one hour! My dog, Chief, will love me for that! I will try to find a swimming pool twice a week for one hour. I will continue with the elliptical torture device and increase by 5 minutes every 4 days. Sound good? Feet, don't fail me now!
Thanks for letting me blow off some steam. Please remember to always keep your sence of humor, it can save your life!
Hi Lori,
Welcome......Welcome.....Welcome.....!!!!!
I Think You Are Doing Remarkably!
I do think 1000 calories is really very little. But, whatever works for You. I am amazed at your vigorous workouts and inspired by your spirit and determination. I have no doubt, you shall meet your goal. I do agree with your husband...that is an awful alot of exercise to burn 1000 calories..so check out the thyroid, just to be safe..
Yes, this is a wonderful site..There are many wonderful women and men, who are supportive and will help guide you or just let you be yourself and blow off steam. There are also other groups available to get the support and insights to what has worked for others.
Check out my Profile....I relate to your illnesses....or I'll just say I relate to the trauma.....I have the opposite challenge...I must force myself to eat. I must say, that in the feww weeks I have been on the site, I have made 2 wonderful friends, and have added 1000 calories to my diet daily...Not where I want to be, but so much better than before...Don't kid yourself...it is very difficult to gain weight....I FORCE MYSELF....I MUST..if I want to live..which I do.
My name is Randi and I am 54 years old. Read my profile, see if we click, and if we do I would be honored to be your friend. Always can use support and there are some Magnificent Strong Women on here.....If not, I will only wish you the very best in your challenge.....and I am sure you will reach your goal.
You are blessed Lori.....take it from someone who is also blessed...we will each reach our goals...I have no doubt....You have made me smile and you are a fighter.....You are in the right place..and like you said....it's free....but I must add, for me it's been Priceless. Hope to hear from you...Best of Luck!!
Hey fellow 50s!
1. History with weight loss: Not much. I didn't have a problem with my weight until the last few years. I've gained 35 pounds since I went through menopause. I've tried a couple of diets, but hate having to put so much energy into thinking about what to eat. I thought I ate well, but I guess not.
2. History with Calorie Count: Just joined today. Hopefully, keeping track of calories will be easier. I'm surprised at how quickly they add up.
3. Reason for joining this group: Hoping to find people with similar life experiences. At least we've been around the same amount of time!
4. Some interesting details about yourself, such as your job, your family, your pets and your interests: I live with my husband in northern Virginia. Our grown son and his fiancee live in Nevada. I work in Western water policy in Washington, DC. I'm a biologist by trade, so I enjoy working outside as a horticulture volunteer at the United States Botanic Garden. There is plenty to do around here, both indoors and out. I enjoy hiking, water sports, sightseeing, and spending time at home reading, doing art, and watching TV. We have a sweet 18-year old kitty, Mr. Tizzy, and two young parakeets, Blondie and Morris Day and the Time. I enjoy pretty shoes and great hiking boots!
Welcome! Keeping track of calories certainly has helped me. It still amazes me how little food it takes to eat up 1,200 cal. I realize now that even when I thought I was eating right, I wasn't even close. I started in late August and have just reached my goal of 15# before my son's wedding in November. I was the same way about having to think about and plan what I eat, but if you are willing to do the work, you'll see results!
Good luck! Donna
Hello everyone! Most folks call me Kathy. I'm using the screen name "a-better-day-ahead" because, even at 54 yrs, I still have hope. I joined CC on Oct. 31, 2009. This is my first day.
I weigh 220 lbs now, and I am 5' 8.25" (I've shrunk from almost 5' 9"). My goal is to lose 75 lbs. At one point in my life I was anorexic (I was 20)--I weighed 105 lbs. But until I was about 40ish, I weighed 135 lbs almost perpetually. I quit smoking in 1994 for 6 months and immediately gained 50 lbs. In the last 14 yrs I have gone from about 185lbs to 220lbs. In 2003 I weighed 210, and I lost about 50 lbs while one of my sons was in the hospital (that's when my profile picture was taken), but since then I have gained it all back and then some. I used to be a high school athlete. When I dream I still weigh my high school 125--then, when I wake up and see myself in the mirror, I get sad and angry.
I have 4 surviving children (all grown), 2 stepchildren (both grown), 2 surviving grandchildren, and my mother, 90, lives 2 blocks away. I lost my youngest son 10 years ago, my father 5 years ago, and my granddaughter 3 1/2 years ago.
My husband is a great cook. I do some of the cooking, but he is the head chef! I have been diagnosed with PTSD, a type of anxiety disorder, and I often eat to find comfort and peace (besides, I love to eat, especially when my hubby cooks).
I joined cc because I need all the help and support I can get to lose weight. I want to stop being ruled by my "hunger" and learn to eat right for life--not relying some hokey diet fad that comes and goes, or a diet that relies on processed foods, denies me even small helpings of good food, or is too hard to maintain!!
I have a 10,000 sq/ft garden, and with help from my husband, I can or freeze as much of it as I have energy for (this is still a learning process). I like homemade/made from scratch foods--when I can, I make my own butter from cream from a local dairy, mayo, pasta, bread, etc. (this is also a learning process). I try to support local farmers by eating local foods and foods in season (with some exceptions). I have a cat. I'm learning to knit and ski. I own a bike that I haven't ridden in a year and a half, ice skates that I haven't used in a year, and a tread mill that I used yesterday for the first time in about a year. I got over a fight with the swine flu about a week ago that had me down for about 6 weeks. I think I'm going to dust off my bike today!
Welcome Kathy!
There are lots of different people here at CC and you are able to find the support you need.Losing or gaining...we are each struggling with something..
So, I say..GREAT JOB on joining and I wish you all the luck.
If you can use a friend, i will try to be there.. I'm here just a month myself but I have already made 2 dear friends and changed my eating habits drastically.
Check out my profile..and may be we will be friends.
my friends vary..like I said..Some need to loss...some need to gain..
We all are here for support and help.
Welcome..only the best to You!!
Hello everyone. Here I am a brand-new member. Wow, is there ever a lot of support on the internet. I am happy just to be writing this.
My History with weight loss:
I grew up very skinny but very healthy. When I was about 8. the school nurse advised my mother I should be put in an institution (this was post-war Holland) to fatten me up. My mother was agast, and in no uncertain terms told her to go fly a kite. As a youth I was always active in basketball and gymnastics.
Once married I had 4 children and struggled with an undiagnosed thyroid condition for 17 years. That was no fun. It was very difficult to be active and cope.
Once on medication however I was a new woman at 40, got myself an education and have worked as an accountant ever since. I love my work, my family and my friends.
Over the last 15-20 years tragic life events have taken a toll on me. Combined with menopause the weight started piling on.
I went on 'Sureslim' diet 5 years ago and lost 35 pounds. More emotional upheavals however and I gained more back in the last couple of years than I lost. At this point I am embarrassed to say that I weigh 175 pounds and this time the bulk of it is in the mid-section.
Now it is time to get my life back. Hopefully the worst of the emotional upheavals are behind me and I can concentrate on my own well-being.
I am hoping by joining a group of similar age (I am 58) that we can share stories and encouragement.
See ya![]()
P.S. The profile picture was taken 4 yrs ago. I want to look like that again.
Hello Calorie Count People!
I'm not new to Calorie Count but am new to posting. It's so great to know that I can simply log on here and read through the other 50-something posts to feel at home! I'm an older mom and am surrounded by other mom's who are usually at least 5-12 yrs younger than me, most of which haven't hit the fantastic phaze of menopause and all the fun that goes with it.
My weight loss history -- thin until age 30, gained a lot of weight with 2 pregnancies, exercised and lost through portion control and lots of walking/swimming. That was 13 yrs ago. Am heavier again at 5'7" and in the 160-170 lb range.
I've lost and regained through following Atkins and Weight Watchers. Mostly I need to just get it in my head that apparently my body requires a lot fewer calories than what I think it needs! i am not diabetic but do have what feels like low blood sugar when I eat too many carbs -- have been through the glucose challenges and they all come back as normal, but am hungry all day if I don't pretty much stick to just protein and veggies.
For exercise these days I walk a brisk 30 min's every morning (and I mean EVERY morning), spurned on by a high energy Springer Spaniel who turns a year old soon. We live right near a city baseball park where I can just let the dog run and where I walk, even in the dark -- the surrounding street lights help a lot. We also live really close to a YMCA that we've mostly wasted money belonging to since none of us goes there. Stopping that membership feels like saying it's ok to not exercise, but really we've got any equipment here at the house that we'd use at the Y so I think we're going to be pulling the plug on that monthly fee really soon. I am not into group exercise so will look through the posts here for ideas on videos to keep motivated and moving.
So the main issues for me are rembering to not eat every time I'm hungry, use the CC calorie counter -- it's such a great tool -- and to add in some weight lifting and yoga/pilates for that soft middle that has developed these past years. Starting slowly at age 52 is the only way, as many of us here know.
Anyway, I'll need to remember to plug in here for motivation -- it looks like there are many people here, struggling to be healthier. I look forward to reading more about you all!
How do I post a new member to this group? I'm missing it because I wrote a long posting and I don't know where it went?
appypacker
I'm sorry to say I think it is lost. I just am replying to your post but I'm afaraid I don't remember how I originally did it. You can try CONTACT CC tech help and explain your situation or reply to mine and write the post again...Sorry.
I am fairly new and have not got it all down yet.
That's very frustrating...but I send a warm welcome and hope you figure it out!!
So Sorry.
Two weeks with CC so though it was time to take advantage of the forums.
Have battled excess weight all my adult life. Last significant weight loss was ten or eleven years ago when I dropped down to 140# - looked pretty good at that weight, but CC set a goal weight of 128. On the high end I have been as heavy as 190 started out this time at 181. Up from 159# 3 1/2 years ago....when I fell in love and moved in with my wonderful boyfriend. (My sister says the weight gain must mean I'm happy - which I am.) Even though I'm very happy - I'm not happy with the way I look and feel. I am ready to lose the weight and maintain a healthy weight.
I've always known the only real way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you consume. This time I want to do it the right way - by making better, healthier food selections. I like the way CC rates your food choices - very helpful.
I also joined a new gym and signed a 2 year contract. Hopefully that $32 a month will be incentive to get me there. They claim to track usage and tell me if I don't show up on a regular basis they will call me.
So far I have lost 8#. A little fast, but I think the clean out before my colonoscopy last week had something to do with it. So I will not be disappointed if a have a gain of a pound or two next week.
Hoping when I reach my goal weight I will be able to get off some meds for blood pressure and cholesterol - and that it will help with the hot flashes and maybe even help my golf swing.![]()
Can't believe how much I rambling here. A little about me - I'm 50 will be 51 in February. I live in South Dakota and work as a marketing manager. I have two grown sons, my oldest (27) lives in Gresham, OR - my youngest (24) in Omaha, NE.
I look forward to getting know some of you here and hope you are all successful in your weight loss!
I've been on CC for a week! My weight has gone up and down all my life. I weighed 15 pounds for 4 years with intense scrutiny of my diet, it slowly crept up. I just weighed 181 (5'3") a while ago and started here at 174. I weighed in this a.m. at 169 -- yay! I really like this site and wanted to see what everyone has to say. I am 54, so it's a different ballgame than before -- a lot of not so cool changes -- like I have about a zero metabolism now. It is really, really hard for me to lose any weight at all. I find the best way to lose weight though is to exercise and I am going to Curves -- it's quick it and tones me up.
Hi, I'm a 57 year old Englishwoman living in Canada for the last 3 years. I'm retired.
I've been using the CC tools for a couple of months. Dieting is a new thing for me. I was really skinny until I was 40. Since then I've put on weight because of giving up smoking, an underactive thyroid, the menopause and cold Canadian winters when all I want to do is sit in front of the fire and drink hot chocolate!
I started dieting at 159 lb and I've lost 10 lb in the last couple of months. As well as a calorie controlled diet I'm spending 10 hours a week at the gym. It is working well for me. I'm within the healthy range now, but I'm keeping going because I think my best weight both for health and looks is around 135 lb.
My main concern is that I don't lose weight so quickly I put it back on again just as quickly. My mother has been obese all her adult life and is a yo-yo dieter. Her experience has made me really reluctant to diet as well as being very skeptical about the diet industry. I'd never join Weight Watchers; I'd rather spend the money on gym membership.
I like this site. It's free Yeah!
