And now just go ahead and make that first post!
Hi everyone, I'm Melina and I just joined up yesterday. I think I registered for CC about 8 months ago when I was just starting to keep close track of my diet, but I never did much with it and just discovered the forums when I re-joined yesterday. My history with weight loss is long! I started gaining weight due to a terrible diet of junk food, processed carbs and cheese when I was 10 or so (not my parents' fault! They eat very healthfully and I was a skinny kid when my mom prepared all my meals. I became a vegetarian early on and started making my own meals, and that's when everything went to hell). I gained weight steadily until I was 15 (I was around 240 lbs then), when I started exercising every day and dieting - I stopped because I had a huge fight with my teen girl gym friends (of course) and only stuck to exercise and diet regimes sporadically after that. I slowly blew up to 300+ lbs over the next 10 years, always planning to lose weight SOON but never really taking action. I had a kind of epiphany moment last year (April 2008) at the age of 25, and started exercising and eating better the next day. I have only a sketchy idea of how much I weighed then - 320-330? I finally weighed myself in October and was 306, and that was after several months of exercise and healthier eating. Since then I have been losing weight steadily through increasingly improving my diet, careful calorie counting and frequent exercise. I'm at 264 now and hoping to get to 160 within 2 years.
I joined this group because I just moved to DC and though I'm not sure how long I'll be in the area (I'm finishing up a Masters degree in art conservation and am interning here for the summer, hoping to stay in the area longer-term) and thought there might be some fun meet-ups!
I'm a broke student with a nomadic lifestyle (9 homes in 9 years!) and I don't have much in the way of family (well, I have wonderful parents and siblings) or pets (besides my family cats, who have forgotten me and only put up with me when I visit home because they're old and tired). My interests are many! I love cooking, art, reading and cinema, and I watch a lot of trashy TV at the gym. Actually bad TV is a great motivator to get me to the gym.
Hi, Melina! Sorry I didn't respond to this sooner; I was out of town. I sent you a private message about an informal meet up we are going to have one week from today. Hope you can come!
Hello all! I'm Kam and I live in Washington DC. I'm very new to CC and a friend told me that I should join and come for help/motivation/support. After doing my research I knew it would be a great idea. My history with weight loss isn't very long seeing as how i'm just 20 yrs of age. I was just a little branch (small) until i got about 12 years old. I don't know how/why the weight came, but it came by :( I got around 240 at 18 and my largest weight size was 264. I'm now 20 In my junior year of college and i'm down to 234. I've been mentally preparing for this journey for about a month now. I work out 30 minutes a day for 5 days a week, and i've cut off all fried foods and all soda's. I have NOT been on a calorie count, but i have been watching closely what i eat. I would definitely be interested in meeting up with some of you guys and learning some tricks/secrets.
thanks for your time.
-Kam.
Welcome, Kam! There is a lot of helpful information on this site. Good luck on your journey! The only advice I have for you is to log everything you eat and drink here on the Web site, or on paper, if you prefer that. If you eat it, write it down. If you don't want to log it, don't eat it. That's something that has really worked for me.
Hi,
My name is cat and i live in alexandria VA near shirlington.
1. History with weight loss:
have had weight gain twice due to medical reasons
2. History with Calorie Count:
started 21 July 5.2 at 175 nad I am struggling to stick to 1500 c/day
3. Reason for joining this group:
local support and to attend a meet up for a healthy lunch, attend an eventetc... Unfortunately I cannot join you to the museums due to feet injuries at this time but hopefully they will get better soon![]()
4. Some interesting details about yourself, such as your job, your family, your pets and your interests:
Fed worker, great supportive boyfriend, I like the arts, no pet, had to take up swimming due to feet limitations - wrecks my hair ![]()
Greatful my open heart surgery was a fantastic success in April. Unfortunately, I gained 20 pounds while recuperating and laying around and unable to walk for exercise due to feet (plantar fasciitis).
height 5ft 2in
I started 21 July 2009 @175
goal 135 1 May 2010
no loss yet but started drinking 8 glasses ofh2o/day and I know that will help.
I am supposed to stick to 1425 calories to lose one pound a week but I got too hungry so I am tryin betwee 1500 -1700 for the slow 1 year loss of 40 pounds. After reading some posts on other threads, I realize I am a binge eater - like I cannot have 1 cup ice cream or 1 tbs peanut butter. I never used to keep them in the house until my sister came to help me recuperate from surgery and she brought them in and I started eating them. So I need to get back to no sweets in the house!
well, let's roll!

Hi , I'm Khadine. So where do I begin? It seems like most of us has the same story on weight and lossing it.
I've always been on the chubby side, however my last few years in high school I lost most of it until about 20 ish. Went through a divorce, juggling fulltime job and fulltime school, then came the 40+ lbs. Since then I haven't really gained much, but not losing any.
So, my motivaton is my visit to see in laws for xmas. I started with setting a small goal of 20lbs. I started slowly changing what I eat before this phase, but my problem is working out. So far I have been working out on the eliptical machine for 20 mins and about 30mins on the Wii. I have decided to work out everyday as I am afraid of relapsing.
Hopefully with my 1500 daily intake and working out everyday I can do it!
Good Luck to you guys!
Welcome, Cat and Khadine!
We are having a meet-up on August 15, but it will involve a lot of walking. Cat, I hear ya on the foot pain. I have plantar fasciitis in my left foot, and am about to ask for a shot to see if that will help. The medicine for it has not helped.
We are going to meet inside Ballston Commons Mall at 12:30 ouside of the Noodles & Company. We'll eat there, and then take the Metro to downtown, DC, where we'll tour the Museum of American History. Woot! :)
Hope y'all can come!
Greetings!
1. History with weight loss: I'm 29, 5'3", and this is only the second time I've made a conscious effort to lose weight. The first time was in my mid-twenties, when I was working at a restaurant and eating at work frequently, which meant oversized portions and high-calorie foods. I gained about 30 pounds and went up four clothing sizes. I started eating reasonable portions and healthier foods and had no problem losing the weight.
Now I eat a pescetarian diet, which helps with healthy food choices, and a couple of years ago I started teaching a group fitness class. At the top of my game I was 105.5 lbs and solid as a rock, but I think I was a little too thin. Then I started traveling frequently for work, which meant eating in restaurants and not teaching my class when away from home. I moved to DC in April, and now I'm focusing on getting back in shape to teach group fitness again. My goal weight is 110 lbs.
2. History with Calorie Count:
I joined CC in July 2009 and I've lost about 5 lbs already. I tried to do 1200 calories/day, but at first didn't do too well. Now that I've figured out some low energy density foods I love, it's easier and I don't get hungry. When I stopped eating meat I had a bit of a learning curve, and again when I cut out sugar for a while. This is no different, and now I've got a solid handle on what foods I can eat to feel full while still leaving some leeway for indulgence. I don't believe in total self-denial! :-)
3. Reason for joining this group:
Getting to know other people who are interested in taking responsibility for their health in a balanced way. Supporting and encouraging others. It doesn't matter if you want to lose 2 lbs or 200 lbs. I believe in a healthy lifestyle, not fad diets or pills or whatnot, and as a fitness professional seeing others reach their goals gives me extra motivation to pursue my own.
4. Some interesting details about yourself, such as your job, your family, your pets and your interests:
I live with two roommates, work for the federal government, have two cats and love live music, theatre and dancing. :-)

I'm a Realtor living in Reston, and working throughout Northern Virginia. I've lived in the DC area for about 35 years. I attended high school and college in Maryland, and have lived in Virginia for the last 12 years or so. I'm married to a great wife, and have three wonderful kids (ages 12 to 15).
I had a major birthday on August 31st, and became committed to losing the 40 or so extra pounds that I've been carrying off and on for years. I'm eating a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet and exercising almost every day.
History with Weight Loss
I was thin and very fit through my 20s and into my early 30s. Then, after marriage and a couple of kids, my life style became more sedentary and I got into the habit of finishing off what was left on my kids’ plates.
Over the last several years, I’ve tried losing weight, and I would be able to do so for a short time, but then gain it all back. I’ve been stuck at the same weight – about 40 lbs overweight – for at least the last 5 to 10 years or so. Basically, I've become sick and tired of being sick and tired of being overweight (if that makes sense).
I’ve never tried calorie counting, and am glad to have found CC. So far, it’s been helpful and I’m looking forward to using the site to better track what I eat and how many calories I take in each day.
Miscellaneous Details
Since starting to diet and exercise, my wife and I have been bicycling on the W&OD Trail and I’ve been going to the gym about three times a week.
I used to run 10Ks, and would like to get back into running for fun. Right now, the best I can do is jog about 20 minutes at a time. Obviously, I’ve got lots of work to do.
My wife and I both love animals, and we’ve got two rescue cats and one rescue dog.
