Welcome to the new over 100 to lose club!
Howdy guys and gals! I'm taking over this club, not because i think i have all the answers (i so know i don't) but because i'm super pumped up right now and motivated to help those people out there who have a lot of weight to lose. we need a place that's more than a "can i join" place.. we need a place to talk about issues related to being this overweight..
Who here needs to lose over 100 pounds? Who needs to lose over 150 pounds? Or more?
I did! I did! And yes.. i did!
A small amount of background on me for those of you who don't know: i am a binge eater. I have had a problem with emotional eating, hidden eating, over eating, eating with a hang nail, eating because i have split ends.. you name it i stuffed my emotions down with the greasiest, nastiest food i could find!
Why did i do that (you might ask)? Because of many many different reasons.. frankly i think it was because this is how i was taught from a young age, this is how we handle stress and emotions. I learned that it's not proper to talk about your feelings.. or god forbid, express your emotions! You have to shove them down with a piece of cake and a smile!
Anyway.. onto the reason for this post.
If you are out there and need to lose a lot of weight.. just like i've got to.. i think we need to have a place where we can discuss these issues with each other and try and work through them together. Because, let's face it, people who are morbidly obese (yes.. i hate that word too) have uniquely different issues to work through and deal with than the average person.
Losing weight, for people who have this much to lose, have to deal with so much more than the formulas to figure out how much to eat.. and exercising. It's more complex than that. We have to deal with years and years of poor eating habits that have to be unlearned, we have to deal with the emotional torment of just being this size, we have to deal with the harsh looks and comments from strangers or from loved ones, we have to deal with our emotions for the first time in our life because we aren't shoving them down our throats anymore..
this is the hardest thing ANYONE has to deal with.. but, from my experience, things are different for us bigguns. :)
also, for those of you who don't know me very well.. (because i've kinda been in hiding and not posting much and there are so many new people out there) i started out in january weighing 324 pounds. I now weigh 232.5.. i have lost 91.5 pounds so far. I am not telling you guys this to get kudos.. i got those yesterday. I'm telling you guys this because i want anyone out there who is struggling with knowing they have, what seems to be, an insurmountable amount of weight to lose, that there is hope.. it IS possible.. you CAN do it.. but it's hard.. and you will hurt.. i know this because i've been there.. i've done it.. and i'm still dealing with it.
so.. come on in and share your stories.. i want to hear them and i want us to support each other until we are all at our goal weight!

CURVES...
Happy,
I *lurve* Curves. I find so much encouragement there, not only from the staff but also the other members. I haven't belonged to too many gyms, but this is the first place I've gone where people are actually smiling and happy to see me and happy just to be there.
I like that it's just 30 minutes. I have a busy schedule - work 9 hours/day, adult literacy tutoring, Bible Study - and it works for me. It helps that the one to which I go is pretty much on my way home from work.
I like that it's just women. No meat market mentality. Tho' the gym I went to before had a separate women's facility, I don't know, I just thought there were a lot of pretty people there looking to "hook up".
I like that they weigh and measure you once a month, not obsessing weekly (tho' I do weigh at my doctor's once a week). Every time so far, they have written encouraging notes and such on my report.
I like that they have frequent promotions where you can join for half price or even free - for bringing a bag of food or getting your mammogram or whatever. And they give away free stuff, too, like a free t-shirt when you reach your first 36 work-outs and when you have an anniversary each year. Yes, in the long-run, you're paying for that in your membership, but it's a tangible thing that pleases me.
I like that they're outward looking - gathering food for shelters or doing benefits for community agencies. Recently they did a glamour shots thing that benefited a local agency. They posted something about doing a special day for girl scouts recently, too.
I like that they have occasional "challenges". I'm competitive, so that works for me. (I didn't win the October challenge...I lost 9 lbs. and 6 inches for a total of 15. The winner lost over 28 total; third place beat me by 3.25!)
It just so happens that they are a "partner" with my very progressive health plan, which gives me 20 points for every time I go work out. And my health plan (Destiny Health through Guardian) reimburses me a portion of the monthly membership fee.
I'm trying really hard to find something I don't like to balance this out...hmm...
Okay, there's no shower. There's a tiny little curtained area for changing and one bathroom. It's not a real, full-service gym like the other place I went - with pool, steam room, sauna, jacuzzi and the like. There's just the one circuit you go on and stretching. But that gym I'd been to was *very* expensive, and Curves is only $139 to join and then $39/month if you sign up for a year ($49 if month-to-month).

Howdy Howdy....it was nice to see a reply to my post...thanks.
I just got back from the Y and was surprised to find I had gained 2 lbs in the past week.
Thankgiving aside..I was not happy to see that. I was sooooo good over the Holiday.
Someone told me perhaps I am beginning to build muscle and it weighs more than fat.
I dont care much about muscle..at aprox. 370 I just want to see the numbers fall like the Berlin wall ( A big nasty chunk at a time)
well as the song says ( Ain't noting gonna break my stride..nobody gonna slow me down , oh no ...I got to keep a moving)

Actually a pound of fat weighs the same as a pound of muscle. The difference is, muscle is more dense, so takes up less space. So if you put a pound of fat next to a pound of muscle, the muscle would look smaller even though it weighs exactly the same.
Its the same as a pound of feathers weighing the same as a pound of stones. You would have more feathers (fat) because they weigh less per unit, so it takes more of them to make the pound. The stones (muscle) are heavy/dense are you require less to make up that pound.
Also, typically it will take you less time (theoretically) to lose the pound of fat than it will for you to build up that pound of muscle. If you cut your caloric intake by 500 cals/day (from your maintenance amount) you could - theoretically - lose 1 lb a week. However, if you are exercising approximately 30 mins for 4x/week, you will only build up about .25 lb of muscle, which is why it is rare for you to build the same amount of muscle as you are losing that amount of fat. Can it happen? Yes. But it is rare. You might want to check here for an interesting article about losing weight and building muscle at the same time.
Hope it helps.

OK - so I've been doing some reading on this whole muscle/fat thing. Is it possible that in the weeks when we lose inches, but not pounds, that it is because we have increased muscle mass and not just lost fat?
I've been trying to fully understand why you need more calories to build up muscle and it doesn't all make sense to me. I guess it doesn't matter that much as long as my size is decreasing and my fitness is improving just trying to figure it all out.
:)

sobergal - sorry to hear about the posted gain. Always sucks when that happens but it's the trend that's truly important. It's good that you're going to keep right on going!!!

I neevr posted on this thread before, but I read all the "over 100 to lose" posts because I needed to lose over 100. Well, the first 20 are off, so now to be at a healthy weight, I ONLY (haha) need to lose 99. True it will be the very heighest number in the healthy weight, but I'll be there. But, Ideally, I still need to lose 111. Wasn't sure where else to post, I was just so excited that I don't have 100 pounds to lose. It was/is very good mentally to get over under that amount.
(sorry, if I sound like I'm bragging, I am just really happy)

Thanks Jill! For the stuff about curves.
You are right about the encouragement. Did it take you a couple weeks or a month to see a difference when you first started? I've gone for 2 weeks and haven't lost a pound, or an inch. Is that normal or am I doing something wrong?
I'm not giving up though I am going to change from 3 to 5 times a week and I'm re-evaluating my diet.
Thanks again.
Jeep Girl-AWSOME!! CONGRATS-we are all so proud of you, and I think you can post here always because you encourage us by losing the weight. Thank you for posting.

hey jeepgirl! don't worry about bragging, we all need the motivation of seeing someone else be successful! And congrats at shedding the 20 so you have under 100lbs to lose now! :) Great Job!
Happy,
Yes, it was a couple weeks in before any change, and by that, I mean a couple weeks after I *joined* which was two full weeks after I started under a free 2-week pass (thanks to Slim-a-bear ice creams, of all things). I weighed in at 257 on Sept. 22, and a week later I was still at 257 when we started the October Challenge. However, by the end of the October Challenge, which,)because I weighed a few days before Oct 1 and a couple days after Oct. 31) amounted to almost five weeks, I had lost 9 pounds and 6 inches. (They measure bust, waist, abdomen, hips, one upper arm and one upper thigh, and they multiply the arm & thigh x 2 to determine your "lost inches".)
The person who won the Oct. Challenge, I understand, had started about the same time as I did. She did well the first month, but the second month her total pounds+inches lost was 28.25!!! (I don't know this person or what she's doing besides getting to Curves 5 times a week and working all out.) The person who came in second missed by 0.25, I think. The person who came in third had a total loss (pounds+inches) of 18.25 (which beat me by 3.25 total)!
I've been slipping the past two weeks on calories and sodium goals, so I'm not seeing loss and in fact at the doctor's office, I'm seeing slight gains. I had definite plans to improve this week, but it's not lookin' great so far. Yesterday, I had 1,966 calories (at least below 2,000 which is better than most of the last 10 days!) and 2,086 mg sodium (which is below the 2,400mg RDA for normal people but slightly high for people such as myself with high BP). Because I had Chinese food for lunch today, I'm already at my 2,000... I'll have to really watch the rest of the day and up my water intake as well.
I've been going to Curves 3-5 times per week, mostly 4-5 times per week. And I bought a row machine to use on days I don't go there. (Like tonight I have a meeting and possibly won't make it to Curves first; besides, wouldn't want to show up at the meeting all sweaty...LOL)

Thanks Jill,
I am determined not to give up, so I went to Curves 5 times this week, started watching my calories better, set some non food goals and I think I'm noticing a difference. I learned my lesson though. I should have waited a bit to weigh in.
Your post was so encouraging. I think your loss in October was very realistic, and not too hard on your body. I think 28 inches is a bit much in one month, unless she was extremely heavy.
I'll keep plugging along, nice to know you're out there plugging along too.
Hang in there. Don't get discouraged about the last couple of weeks, sounds like you are totally on top of it. Good job!
I haven't really been watching sodium, I guess maybe I should? I'm really bad about putting everything in the log because I make a lot of the food we eat from scratch and its a big job to type in every recipe.
Any suggestions?

Happy,
What I love about typing in the recipe is that in future, I have that saved and can use it over and over again. Of course, I eat a lot of the same stuff because that's what I like. I eat a salad each day at lunch, and I really tired of entering the ingredients one by one on the log. So I put in a Tuna Salad and a Salmon Salad (and actually a couple varieties of my tuna recipe), and now I just click "add to log". So easy. Of course, if you cook lots of different stuff, it *would* be a lot of entry the first time you add one, but much more convenient thereafter when you finally repeat that recipe.
And yes, especially if you have any blood pressure issues, *DO* watch your sodium intake. If I buy canned, I try to buy only those veggies (green beans, tomatoes and corn are about all I buy canned - oh, and tomato sauce) marked "no salt added". There'll still be a bit naturally, but it makes a big difference! Any processed food you buy - hamburger helper, mac and cheese, rice a roni, etc. - is going to have more sodium than if you make it from scratch. My one big-ticket item (sodium-wise) I allow myself is tuna and salmon, and I just have to make sure other things are low that day. You can buy low-sodium canned tuna, but they charge a LOT for it. Bagels are really high, too. I don't need a lot of cream cheese on mine, but just the bagel is pretty high - can be 500mg!
And that gal's *total* was 28 - inches PLUS pounds lost. Like mine was 9 pounds plus 6 inches for a total of 15. She was probably 18-20 pounds and the rest inches, I would guess. Still it's a lot to lose in your second mond. Most morbidly obese people can lose 20 pounds the first month, but I think it should taper off to 2 -3 pounds a week the second month, for an 8-12 pound loss. Who knows? That could have been the case and she just dropped LOTS more inches than I did, though I suspect that pounds accounted for about 2/3 of each person's total for the challenge.

Thanks for the advise. I have one week left before my one month weigh and measure.
I'll let you know how it goes.
I'll also start entering recipes, you are right, I guess if I have a few minutes, I should just enter a few and then it will just be a click away.
Keep me posted on your progress. You are really encouraging!

Oops, Jill, I forgot to ask,
How do you log Curves Activity? Do you count it as Circuit training with some aerobic activity?

I just started my journey. I have to loose 140 Pounds. I am motivated. Lot of times I started but failed. But this time I don't want to. My weakness I love cooking a lot and have been eating a lot . I know the only solution is keeping myself busy in other activities. I request all Gurus to please give me some tips of how you people have been able to achieve the goal of loosing 100 lbs. I know its a long journey.
Hello everyone,
I just joined CC today, and am really hopeful that this will help me make the changes that I need. I want to lose about 120 lbs and basically feel like this is next to impossible. I have been heavy all of my life, but finally feel that I've hit rock bottom. I feel terribly alone and discouraged with where I am at.
I constantly feel like I am disappointing the people I love because I am overweight. I feel like I want to be thin more than I want anything, yet I am so frustrated with myself becuase I can't seem to push myself enough to even come close to obtaining that goal.
I guess I am reaching out in the hopes that I can find other people like me, so that we can support and motivate each enough to reach our goals.
I have started going back to the gym and am attempting to eat healthier and count calories. I think that once I start to lose some weight, I will be much more positive and motivated to keep going. I'm just having a really tough time believing that I can actually accomplish such a huge goal.
Thanks for letting me vent.

Hi Janell,
I think you can definetly do it. Just keep faith and keep trying. I had a time when I lost 14 lbs in one months time through healthy eating and no exercise. Now, I have again started trying to do it again. My major problem was I was too engrossed in a different lifestyle where I didn't bother about my calorie count.
Though even I am new to this forum. Here we have so many real people who have done it.So, If so many people can do it you can also do it.
Best of Luck...

Thanks for the encouraging message. :-) That is pretty incredible that you lost 14 lbs in a month without exercise.
This looks to be a great forum, and I'm excited to get to know everyone.
Thanks again for taking the time to drop me a line. Good luck with your new venture.

welcome sasianu and janell!
I'm only a very occasional poster, so you probably won't see me around much, but just wanted to say welcome aboard.
One of the most powerful things I've learned in the last year or so, and am still learning, has been to take care of myself. More than in just the common sense of get some exercise, eat less poo, etc; though those are good and necessary things. I mean actively taking care in the way you'd take care of a beloved person. If your best friend came to you mad at herself because she didn't work out for two weeks, or horrified that she ate a box of ding dongs, or worried she was disappointing people, how would you handle it? I'm guessing gently. Kindly. And with her best interests at heart. We just need to do the same for ourselves.
(BTW, the ding dong example is pure fiction, created just for this post. Any resemblance to actual events in the poster's life are purely coincincidental... ;-)

Welcome to all the new faces here! It's always nice to come and read about new journeys starting.
I'm Pam - I've been at CC since the middle of June. As of today, I've lost 60.6 pounds . . . it's a great start for me but I still have 110 to go. Little bit at a time . . . I've completely changed my lifestyle to include much healthier foods and fitness routines (I generally walk about 4 miles per day (or the equivalent of it using Leslie Sansone CD's).
I still eat almost anything - including chocolate - but I measure my portions now so I don't overeat. I try to have mostly healthy eating days but I don't feel like I can never eat any of the foods I really like. I won't give that stuff up permanently so I'm trying to find a way to balance it.

Janell - Hi! I'm Beanie and I had 100lbs to lose, and I've shed 50 of them. :) The biggest thing I can say is drink enough water. Yes, when you drink enough water, you'll lose water weight ('cause your body won't hold onto it when it knows there's fresh water coming!), but being properly hydrated is super-important to weight loss. So take your weight and divide it in 2, and that's about how much water in fl oz you should be driking. I should drink 100 floz of water each day, that's about 3 liters! Work your way up to it, and you can do it.
I know the road seems long, but it IS a journey, and you can get there by watching what you eat and exercising. Strangely enough, I now crave salads when I get home from work instead of sweet/salty snacks. But it did take time. It took me from mid-June to drop the 50lbs, so it will happen, slowly but surely.
