I have been dealing with anxiety and some slight depression and want to take wellbutrin because I also heard that it promotes weightloss does anyone know more about this drug?

Yes, I have knowledge about this drug.  It is prescribed for depression. 

It does help some with promoting wakefulness and does not have the side effects of gaining weight like other drugs used for treating depression do. 

If you have a history of seizures then you do not need to take wellbutrin.  If you drink you do not need to take it.  There is a slight risk of having seizures while taking it even if you do not drink or have a seizure disorder, however coupled with these you are at almost double the risk. 

I must tell you Wellbutrin will do absolutely nothing for your anxiety.  It does help with depression though.  If it turns out that your physician thinks this would work well for you then other things can be prescribed to help with the anxiety.  Some studies have shown that people lose weight by taking Wellbutrin, not a huge amount though.  However, you wont pack on the pounds like you do with some alternate choices.

The best thing to do would be discuss it with your physician.  Most would prefer to prescribe something that will take care of depression and anxiety. 

I am currently taking Wellbutrin for depression.  I have narcolepsy so the other medications, which can make you sleepy, were not really an option for me.  I do have anxiety but I was prescribed other pills to help with that and don't take them daily.

Be careful coming off it - I had a nasty withdrawl period.  Like dangerous nasty.  I know it's not like that for everyone, but make sure you are under careful care of a doc when you go off.

You should carefully consider taking wellbutrin, it has a lot of nasty side-effects and I can't count on one hand the number of people who I know who have taken it and had a seziure, even with no history of seziures. 

I took Wellbutrin for quitting smoking. On one hand, it helped me not smoke, which was good, but I would also have these weird side effects - cold sweats, heart racing, dry mouth. And, overnight I turned into this sappy sweet Care Bear, which was unsettling. I also had severe withdrawal problems.

If you want something that will help your anxiety, Prozac and that family of drugs are good. I took it for a year and it helped me a lot. It's also been used for over 20 years now, whereas with Wellbutrin and the newer classes of designer antidepressants, doctors are still learning about them.
