Wellbutrin and seizures

Quote  |  Reply
I recently was prescribed Wellbutrin to treat my depression. I've been reading stuff about seizure risks with this medicine and it's scaring me! I was wondering if anyone has had any experiences with Wellbutrin positive or negative or know anyone who has had seizures on it.

Thanks!

My Mom went on Wellbutrin a few years ago and it caused her to have rapid heartbeat and it gave her a feeling of having a seizure so she went off of it by her doctor's orders. You have to be careful when taking antidepressants, the side affects can be crazy for the first few weeks while your body is adjusting to the medication.
I in fact have taken Wellbutrin and had a seizure while on it, a grand mal seizure to be exact.  I was prescribed Wellbutrin in 1995 (at the age of 11) and had probably been taking it for a month, perhaps a little longer.  To this date I do not recall anything from the short time in which I blacked out.  As a result I had an EEG (electroencepholography), which revealed no seizure activity at the time.  To further rule out anything else (brain tumor, etc) I was ordered to have an MRI done on my brain which came back normal.  My sister whom is 2 years older than me was also prescribed Wellbutrin had a seizure as well while on it, both of us discontinued the medicine of course.  I have not had another seizure since.  I'm sure when working correctly, Wellbutrin is a fine medicine but it caused me one of the single worst experiences of my life.
My daughter took Wellbutrin for a short time, but had body tremors (how she described it to me) while on it.  She quit taking it and got on something else.
My DW was on it when she began having Grand Maul seizures.  I was on it for awhle when I first started this journy I am now on.  But I didn't like it, and got off asap.
I was on that for about two months and didn't get any negative side effects. It was just great to have more controlled emotions.
Thats all so scary to hear.  Anybody have a good experience with it?????
I took Wellbutrin for almost a year. I didn't have any negative side effects
i took wellbutrin for about a year and had massive hair loss from it...
My husband has taken wellbutrin for over 2 years and has no ill effects... in fact, it's been wonderful for him!
Myself and my adult daughter have taken Wellbutrin and it really helped our lives. I have switched to another drug because I am bipolar and the Wellbutrin caused some mania as most antidepressants will. But my daughter has been on it since she was 11 and is now 18 and it is still working well for her. Medications work differently for all people. my best advice is to listen to your body. If you are feeling out of sorts or overly shakey, talk to your doctor about changing meds. There are a lot of choices. You don't have to be depressed.

Good luck
they just have to list all possible side effects- dont worry to much about it.  Unless you have an existing seizure disorder i really seriously doubt you will be in danger of having one while taking it.

I took Wellbutrin XL 150 for 6mo and was increased to 300 XL. In all I took this medication for about a year.  In the past 3 months I have had 3 gran mal seizures, with two occuring in one day.  No prior history of seizures at all.  I was extremely lucky as that I was not driving or any other activity that could have harmed another person.  I was at home and all were witnessed by other people.  I had no recall of falling out, nor when it was over did I recall what happened.  I did not even have any sense of lost time or feel bad.

I did go to the emergency room after the two in one day episode.  They ran an EEG, EKG, MRI, CAT SCAN, kept me on a heart monitor and gave me Dilantin for the seizures, which now after some research, the Dilantin was not a good idea.  They did not connect my seizures with the Wellbutrin and all of my tests were normal.

I had my regular physician get my file from the hospital and he looked through it and saw all tests were fine.  He double checked the PDR on Wellbutrin and took me off of it ASAP.  Changed me to Celexa which seems to be working well so far.

I just wonder how many people have been severly injured, killed, or killed someone else because to the seizures this medication can cause.

Anybody that does continue to take this medication should be extremely cautious, have your doctor monitor you closely.

I am very thankful that I nor anyone else was hurt because of this.
