Wendy's "Meatatarian" Commercial

Quote  |  Reply

...thoughts?  I'm guessing most people have seen the Wendy's ad's where the guy refuses to eat a salad because he's a meatatarian.

Even though I think they're poking fun at vegetarians/vegans, I'm still somewhat amused by how ridiculous the commcercial is.

Do you really think they are poking fun at vegetarians/vegans?

Not in a really obvious way, but the guy says something like "it's a personal choice, I have to stay committed".

I hate that commercial.  I know they were trying to by funny, but I thought it was stupid.  Not offensive at all, just plain stupid.  Some marketing "genius" must be patting him/herself on the back for that.  I can't believe they even proposed it to their customer.  The talent pool must be low.

i hate it, too, gpat.  i can't imagine that it would convince anyone to buy a burger (if they were going to anyway, it might provide a sophmoric rationalization).  it's stupid and it makes no sense, and i always expect the woman in the ad (who's eating the salad) to look at the guy like he's a complete 'tard.

I don't think they are trying to poke fun at vegetarians, i think the point of the commercial is that the burger is very "meaty"...

They are trying to reach that same demo of men that love their "Steak and potatoes" for dinner.

want to talk about stupid commercials? I hate the hardees commercials - they show the sloppy mess of whatever the food item is dripping all over the place... and the sound effects of the person chomping and then licking their fingers or whatever - gross.

I must admit...it's a funny and clever commercial.

But I also find it incredibly ridiculous.  I don't think the makers are trying to make fun of vegetarians/vegans, but they don't realize that they sort of are.

Like...you go out with a group of friends to Buffalo Wild Wings, and one orders a salad (which is pretty much all one can get there...even the potatoes have bacon in them).  Everyone asks why, and they say, "Oh I'm a vegetarian," and the crowd is just sort of, "Oh...well...we're at a wings restaurant..."

Like it's mimicking that.

I got slightly POed, though, because refusing to eat anything but meat can lead to serious heart failure and health problems, whereas abstaining from it - like most of the people in this form - can significantly improve health.

I dunno.

Bottom line: it's a funny but obnoxious and ignorant commercial, I think.

but it did its job...You are talking about itLaughing

One could always turn off the TV.

I think it's grosse! and a heart attack on a plate Undecided

Or if you have Tivo, fast forward!  :)

Don't get me wrong..  I don't beleive they were trying to make fun of or offend veg*ns.  I just think the word they made up is stupid, and there is a real name for that... Carnivores.

And, if I'm not mistaken, that bun he's eating is made of wheat, which is a plant, making the commercial even more idiotic.

If you enjoy the commercial, that's fine.  Nobody has to agree with me.  And I hope I'm not offending anyone here with my stern opinion.  That's all it is, is an opinion.

Everytime I see it I just want to tell the guy that he is going aganist his morals by allowing himself to eat that bun, lettuce, tomato and onions - how dare he! Tongue out

yeah idk, I think you could take it offensively or see it as it is; a joke.

I think a lot of people who stick to their beliefs say "It's a commitment thing" ya know? Like when it comes to religion, environmental issues, abortion, politics... anything that you can feel strongly or commited to. Even dieting. I don't think wendy's was trying to make a pun at vegie's... I think it was just supossed to highlight a dumb@$$ guy making a dumb@$$ comment... lol

Don't get me wrong, I'm not offended by this commercial...I think it's so dumb that it's actually amusing.  My intent was to get people talking!

talking about it =/= buying the burger.  i'm not a veg*an; i love meat.  but there's nothing about that ad that makes me want to go to wendy's.

True.  But replacing Meatetarian with Carnivores would ruin the whole thing they were going for...and that is to push the meaty meat.

I'm not so offended that they tried to play off that there could actually be 'meatatarians' (my friends all claim they're 'meatatarians' or 'sugartarians') but the idea that only men are carnivores, or that only women are vegetarians.

I mean, there are lots of women who enjoy meat, and there are lots of men who are vegetarians or vegans even, but it just kind of makes me upset that it's spreading the idea that it's 'unmasculine' to be a vegetarian, or 'unfeminine' to eat meat.

That's what I got from it.

It's funny. I had the same argument until my friend pointed out that Vegetarians eat things other then vegetables. Frown

Actually, I think the point of the burger is there ARE no veggies on it, just the meat, even more disgusting...

#18 - Ha!  Shows how observant I am :)

Let's not forget that this is the company that brought us "Where's The Beef!?"
