So. . . what's the best kind of alcohol to drink?
Is beer worse then pop and hard liquor? whats the worst and whats the best?
Reason: Moved from Weight Loss to Foods forum
Well, the best kind of liquor to drink, healthwise, is none at all, but as a tequila drinker myself I realize that there are certain pleasures that one can responsibly indulge in.
As to what's "worse", it depends on what criteria you're using. A diet pop with vodka is about equal in calories to a light beer, so it depends on what you like. Personally, I would never sully straight up liquor by dousing it with a soda, unless it was just incredibly cheap liquor and the taste needed to be covered up.
Stay away from drink mixes - very high in sugar, and fruit juice always racks up cals.
My personal fav is Ice 101 peppermint schnapps. ![]()

Straight shots and ice water can't be beat!!!
Straight - otherwise it's not vodka.
As for the worst, pretty much everything else...
Edit: Oh I didn't know you were talking about calories... I would say vodka still =)
I'm loving the Jose Gold or whatever its called, has the tequila and margarita mix in one jug. It tastes better than mix-my-own. But I'm having a hard time figuring calories...I'm guessing it's around 200 calories for an 8 oz drink on ice.
Wine...at least it has certain health benefits. The rest of the stuff, I don't see the point.
When I'm out somewhere that people are drinking, I will sometimes have a glass of wine, but more often then not, I have unsweetened iced tea or water. I don't feel any kind of pressure to drink because others are. And, it's always fun to watch people who do have too much to drink make fools out of themselves. LOL.

Wow - your "mix your own" margaritas must be bad (no offense). Having had the best margarita ever (in Guadalajara), anything premixed in a jug, or just made with Jose Cuervo gold in general, is awful (IMO).
I loooove beer, I'm a beer drinker. I've switched to Light beer, and I don't see a huge difference. I also love baileys. I really don't drink that often. Less than once a month, so when I do, I don't worry about calories.
Free! Whatever's free is always best! lol
Vodka has only 65 or so calories in one shot. Soda water has no calories so mix the two, throw in a lime and you have the best drink. Also warm Jager shots with ice water chasers are good too. Magspa is right on with the Becks light.
Also like Bombadier, Director's Courage and sometimes Speckled Hen.
Yum yum...
It depends on what you're looking for or trying to avoid.
Straight liquor is "better" than beer or cocktail mixes if you're trying to avoid calories.
If you want some nutrients with your alcohol, go for a wheat beer. My husband runs marathons. Here in Germany, they give you an alcohol-free wheat beer when you reach the finish line because it has so many nutrients. They are loaded with calories though. A 1/2 liter bottle (usually how they're sold) has about 750 calories. Ouch.
Get some straight liquor, and mix it with the sodas that have no calories (Pepsi One, Cola Zero, Diet Dr. Pepper, etc)...
Patron Tequila - shots. Skip the salt but use the lime if you wish. Even the "cheapest" Patron is not really cheap and is smooth smooth smooth for tequila.
VODKA & Sugar free mixers all the way! Try Red Bull, Rockstar, light or sugar free cranberry juice. Bars are more often carrying the sugar free stuff. Less calories and as stated previously...VODKA.
* Added bonus: I have heard that alcohols that are clear in color give you less of a hang over. So, another reason to stick to VODKA!!

Oh, but so true! I hate HATE mixing my own. My dad was a bartender and both parents were alcoholics so I don't drink hardly ever anyway! Once I got all I needed to make Cosmo's, and they were the worst EVER. Then I found out there is a mix. I still have the almost full bottle of triple sec! :laughing at myself:
Red wine
In moderation, red wine has some health benefits, so I would suggest that.
Straight up hard liquer has the least amount of calories, so stick to the hard stuff. It'll get the job done with as few calories as possible!
Is that good advice? You be the judge!![]()
It's not the calories in the alcohol that concerns me, so much as my resolve...as it crumbles after the second glass and I reach for the chips and dips!!
For the moment I'm just having to steer clear!
On the go andin the know.
