Whats the best low alcoholic drink?
Right, im off to a BBQ on Sat, not worried about what I'll eat as that is all sorted
more worried about what to drink
I want to try and keep it low cal as possible... I'm not a great Vodka drinker, I like white & rose wine and I LOVE Jack Daniels with coke. Now what would be best for me to have? JD & Diet coke? Or white/rose wine? Or can you suggest something else?
I always go for Rum and Diet Coke, I think it's only 60 calories or so.
i've started drinking wine when i drink because it has the fewest calories-- around 90-120 per glass (3.5 oz). and because the lack of caff means it doesn't hit my low-cal-semi-empty stomach and make me the life of the party instantaneously (and then ravenously hungry later... i have been known to make couscous at 4am after a night out drinking).
vodka soda with the splash of lime... the vodka is aprox 65 cals per ounce and then the soda water is zero cals and its not made w/ unnatural sugars like diet sodas
jack and diet is usually what I drink, but a glass of wine has about the same cals.
I love coconut rum so I mix it with diet coke or about any flavor of crystal light. I'm not a big whiskey drinker but I'm sure jd & diet coke would be somewhat similar to my rum and diet coke. I also like vodka mixed with the red grapefruit crystal light, you can barely taste the alcohol at all. Have a great time at the bbq and try not to stress so much that you don't enjoy yourself! :)
definitely the vodka! or you could go with becks premier light beer, its 64 cals a bottle.
IN the calorie counter...it lists wine as a C but vodka, whiskey, etc as big Fat F (alone)
anyone know why that is?
i'm staying away from gin and vodka even though i used to mix w/ diet tonic or seltzer because of the rating it gives. i figure there must be a reason????
A shot of liquor has about 100 cals, a light beer has about 100 cals (michelob ultra has 96, bud light has 110), and a glass of wine can have anywhere from 100-200 cals, dependings on how sweet it is and how generous a "glass" is. Red wine probably has the most redeeming nutritional value (and is usually on the lower end of the calorie spectrum)...but hey, you're at a BBQ!
You should drink something you'll enjoy, because if you're just drinking to be drinking, it's a waste of calories! (unless you're drinking to get drunk, in which case you will probably go over your calories even if you eat nothing else the rest of the day)
Have something yummy and have fun - just don't have a pina colada unless you really, really want one! They have MAD calories ;)

Because wine at least has some nutritional value and antioxidants.

Probably because alcohol is bad and liquor has a higher concentration of it. And because wine does have some positives, like tannins and lowing risk for heart disease (in moderation) etc.
Though it must be the lower concentration of alcohol because beer also gets a C, and we all know beer has no redeeming value :)
Less of something bad=better grade, I guess? Though in the end, a mixed drink and a glass of wine will both contain about the same amount of alcohol, so it only would apply to shots.
SODA WATER.
0 calorie
I'd rather eat than drink.
Besides, drinking lowers inhibitions and may cause you to overeat.
If you are going to drink alcohol, white rums, vodka and gin are the least offenders calorie-wise. They get an F on CC because they are all sugars and alcohol. When all the calories in a food come from sugar, they get an F. Tom Collins is a good gin drink IF it is made with soda water and real lemon. Otherwise it's a bust. White rum and diet soda. Vodka and juice (Greyhounds for example). Seriously, don't try to avoid something with juice because of the "calories". I hate the "diet juice" fad. Personally, I love a great beer and will replace some of my normal mealtime favs with cooked veggies if I plan on getting beer. That's another option.
I like the sourness of the Tom Collins because it keeps me from drinking it too fast and getting another. The sweeter ones, like rum and diet go down a little too easily.
Cheers!
Don't freak over CC's ratings of foods...I've eaten some really healthy things (IMO) that had C ratings.
To add to splitrail's reply, I found diet coke w/ lime a nice and different substitute and the lime takes most of the diet after taste out.
Give it a try!
do a quick search in the forums for alcohol and look for posts from this year. there are tons.
btw:
one ounce of any regular, unsweetened liquor has 88 cals. that would be whiskeys, rums, vodka, gin and tequila. a shot is usually 1.25 ounce. beers vary but you can look them up by name online. wine varies but 6 oz of not-too-sweet reds tend to have 120. so
Is soda water and tonic the same or different? I was always confused by this. I like to drink vodka tonic with lime but would vodka soda be better?

nope not the same. soda water is bubbly tap water. tonic has stuff added to it. I think its pretty high in sodium and actually has calories. of course, if you fear shingles (is that right?) drink tonic with quinine. I had a prof in college who SWORE that drinking a gin and tonic at night will keep the mosquitoes from attacking you... ~I'm not ashamed to say I've tried it~
