What's Best to order at a mexican restuarant?

Quote  |  Reply

I'm eating at a mexican restaurant tonight. I thought shrimp fajitas might be a good not too high calorie choice? I don't want to sabotage my day so far I'm on target. Your suggestions are greatly appreciated

I usually choose something with chicken if they have it.  And corn tortillas rather than flower.

I usually get a taco salad but without the sour cream and guacamole. Instead, I put lots of salsa on it. :) Try to avoid eating the yummy shell it sometimes comes in though!

Margaritas!!!!!!!!!!!

you can always try the vegetarian options.  Or bean things.

I work at a Mexican restaurant (Don Pablo's) and funnily enough, shrimp fajitas really aren't that low-cal--about 900 calories if you have three tortillas. Three enchilladas are about 500 calories, a chicken taco is about 250 calories (but that's a single taco). A half-order of chicken quesadillas (so four slices) is about 650 calories.

Although the Margaritas suggestion is very tempting.  I think I'll run with the taco salad.  thanks for the suggestions

i went to a mexican place for my birthday last week and i got chili beef tacos served with rice n sour cream. no idea how many cals - but i estimated to about 600 because i didnt eat the rice - so sour cream was bout 100 tacos bout 200 and the beef about 300.

just get what you like - dont count calories for the night. and order a dessert if you crave it or if everyone else is allowing themselves one. if they can, you shouldnt feel like you can't :P

My mom always gets rice and beans and nothing else and she always stays trim!! But i happen to love all the fattening things there.  I also love sour cream which is my downfall.  But chicken fajitas is a goodchoice but my friend just eats everything but the fajitas (they are usually served on the side at the restaurent we go to.

Check to see if they have a web site with nutritional info!  I went a few weeks ago and had fajitas!  No tortillas.  Remember they are about 100 calories each.

I have had this problem as well. i love Mexican food!! However I have the hardest time trying to figure out what is good and what is bad. I usual opt for anything vegetarian and leave out any kind of sour cream, cheese or rice (unless it's brown rice which is unlikely for mexican food) I also do the corn tortillas instead of flower. If an option replace refried beans for black beans and keep the guacamole its really good for you as long as you don't overeat. About 2 tablespoons is 50 calories so just make a little go a long way.

Does anyone have tips on how to make chinese food more low cal? I know about nothing fried and getting sauce on the side and portion control but does anyone have other ideas?

I generally order the fajita taco salad, and ask the waiter to hold the taco shell, any strips of tortilla, the sour cream, the cheese, the guacamole...By the time I get through with that, the waiter usually gets the point. And then I check the salad when I get it and remove myself whatever they forgot to hold in the kitchen (often I can pass it off to someone else at the table).

Basically, I get a salad with lettuce, tomato, warm grilled chicken and onion, with salsa as the dressing.

Look at all the ingredients for everything and how meats are cooked.

eg grilled chicken anything is better than deep fried, etc.

Chips are very caloric so dont knosh on the chips and salsa beforehand.

I gain horribly on the Mexican beer so drink water.

Avoid guacamole and sour cream and mega cheese anything.

I get soft chicken tacos with grilled chicken and spicy green salsa in corn steamed tortillas, rice and beans (not refried beans), salad with tomatoes and spicy salsa dressing with fruit garnish if they have it. Tastes very authentic and is lo cal

enchiladas are pretty good too.

Taco salad can be very caloric esp if you eat the tortilla bowl which is usually deep fried and the chips (also deep fried). Taco salads are deceptive that way.

What about veggies entrees?

I have no idea if they're better or worse because they might be cooked in a lot of oil... it's something to look into tho

Chicken sour cream enchiladas! No beans and rice..salad instead! corn tortillas! OMG...it has been so long. That will be one of my rewards when I get closer to my goal!
