Whats BMR?

In order to shed about 10 lbs I've started calorie counting. whichis pretty new to me, I've been writing everything down in a food diary. However I dontknow how many calories I should be consuming.  Ive been consuming under 1300 a day.  And on the days i workout, I find myself getting very tired , so I dont know if I'm eating enough calories on those days. However, how can I calculate that?

I'm 22, 5'4 and 144lbs. I work out 2-3 time a week about 60 minutes onthe elliptical then floor exercises.

Have you checked out the tools that this website offers? They should help you figure all of that out. Look under tools or (account settings too maybe). You enter information about yourself, like current weight, goal weight, target date, and how active you are and it should give you a number to shoot for.

All BMR numbers given to you by anything other than an indirect calorimeter is an estimate. There are at least two formulae used to estimate this (many more if you are injured in some way):

Harris-Benedict is what is used just about everywhere:

For Men: 66.5 + (13.75 x kg) + (5.003 x cm) - (6.775 x age)

For Women: 655.1 + (9.563 x kg) + (1.850 x cm) - (4.676 x age)

Mifflin-St Jeor is another estimate and has a slightly tighter error range:

For Men: ( 10 × kg )+ ( 6.25 × cm ) - ( 5 × age ) + 5

For Women: ( 10 × kg ) + ( 6.25 × cm ) - ( 5 × age ) - 161

Both of these give you your BMR. To get your maintenance diet you multiply them by some factor i.e. 1.2 for sedentary, 1.35 for slightly active, etc...

So there's plenty of room for websites/devices to differ.
