What's the chance?

Here's my story. I'm 25 years old, and I'd been on birth control for 3 years. When I started on birth control I weighed 140-150lbs. My periods became very regular and I could tell you about down to the hour when it would arrive. Less than a year after beginning birth control, I changed my diet and took up running (this after an 18 year gymnastics career, and a couple years of "bingeing" after retirement), helping me to lose 30 lbs. I now weigh about 110lbs. Last month, my husband decided to give me the thumbs up to go off birth control, and we would let nature take its course. If my body were to still be on the same regular cycle it were when I was taking my pill, my period should have started last Wednesday, but it shown no signs... but I've only been off the pill for a month, so is it really likely that I could be pregnant? I took two tests a couple days after I thought my period would arrive, but both were negative. I've been researching early pregnancy signs and I'm not sure if I'm experiencing some of them because I went off the pill and am experiencing those hormone changes, or if it really could be pregnancy after all. The "signs" I guess I have been experiencing are: fatigue -- I'm currently in training for a marathon which is now less than a month away, and last week getting myself to run was like pulling teeth; more frequent urinating -- this I noticed just this past weekend, when I woke in the middle of the night twice to pee, when I never usually wake up; sore nipples - my whole boobie isn't sore, mostly just the nips; not necessarily cravings, but wanting to eat more of the crap that's in sight; and the missed period, or so I'm thinking, still keeping a close eye on that.

So, could I be pregnant? Or are these signs of just going off the pill? And could I have missed the period because I'm 30lbs. less than that last REAL period I had (because they say the period you get while you're on BC isn't "real".

Thanks in advance for any insight! :)

After I went off BC my period was really irregular, and my cycle was generally way longer than the perfect 28 days that it was while on the pill. It was excruciating waiting for either a positive result or my period to hurry up and come already. I spent a lot of money on pregnancy tests.

I don't think you  missed your period because you lost weight, unless you are underweight.

You could be pregnant, or your cycle could be adjusting.  I would say wait a week and then take another test.  Then another week, then another test, then if nothing, go see your doctor.

Everybody is different, but i found that when I was ovulating my nipples were sore and when i was pregnant my whole breasts were sore...

When I came off the pill I didn't have a period for 8 weeks!  Your body has forgotten how to regulate itself so I doubt that its pregnancy, also after taking the pills for years it can take months for you to even be close to pregnancy as it has sort of a cumulative effect according to my doctor.

Of course, some people immediately become pregnant but don't be surprised if the pregnancy does take some time.

Also the weight loss, combined with the increased exercise will naturally delay your period.  Increased exercise usually delays it in my experience.

The period you experience when on birth control is the normal shedding of the uterus lining. The only difference is, there is no egg since the pill stops ovulation.

Have you had a period since you discontinued the pill? If not, your body is probably out of whack.

Are you underweight for your height? If so, you could be experiencing amenorrhea (loss of period). I've also heard of runners losing their period due to the high level of activity (gymnasts, too!).

All that being said, we planned well and I got pregnant before having a period after discontinuing the pill. I was pregnant 2 weeks after I took my last pill. I'm not the norm but it certainly can happen.

My opinion is that your body just hasn't adjusted yet. If you miss three consecutive menstrual periods or aren't pregnant after 6 months of trying, you should make an appointment with your OBGYN. Good luck!

I think it could be the effects of coming off the pill.

I stopped taking the BC pill on 28th July after being on one brand or another for almost 20 years.  I had 2 weeks of sore nipples and a week of bursting into tears for no apparent reason.

I would give it a bit more time before you start to worry too much (and worrying in itself can cause your cycle to mess up).

Best of luck

Everybody is different and while this may just be your body regulating itself, understand that as soon as the pill is discontinued, you can get pregnant.  I was on the pill for 9 years before my husband and I decided to get pregnant and I was pregnant in a month.  No period...just popped up pregnant a month later.  If you and your husband are actively trying, it is ALWAYS a possibility.

Fatigue, at least for me, was always the first symptom, with no others except for slight nausea and hunger.  Your experience sounds a lot like mine...took a test at 5 weeks after my last period and sure enough, positive.  Negatives can be false, or just taken too early.  And again, it could just be your body regulating itself.  After my daughter, I got an IUD and after a couple years, my husband and I decided to have another child.  Not 3 weeks after my IUD was taken out (the IUD prevented periods all together for me), I was pregnant.  Some people just get pregnant quickly and you may be one of those people!  If you are, be grateful!  Many women struggle post birth control...

Good luck to you either way...I'd be curious to know what your final result is...

I think this is a "time will tell" situation.  normally, your body can go wacko after stopping BCP.  Some women get a period right away and some skip a month or two until thier body kicks back into natural gear. OR, you could be pregnant!  I got pregnant with my 2nd the same month I stopped the pill.  My doc said it was just the pill but I was pregnant.

Give it some time and see.  But be responsible until you know just in case you are in fact preggers!  Good luck :O)
