what's the deal with hummus?
i LOVE hummus. i love it. for a few weeks i ate it with everything. i ran through 2 eight ounce tubs in a week. i know it has beans in it, which is great. hooray beans. but it also has lots of oil and fat. when i asked a nutritionist how much hummus is in a single serving, she basically said good for me for eating hummus, and left it at that. so i'm asking you guys:
how much hummus is in a single serving, and what's the dietary info? and i mean the full-fat, full-flavor kind. i ain't skimping when it comes to hummus.
Just keep in mind not to go overboard. It has calories, just like any other food.
As for a serving size, I'd imagine it's a quarter of a cup or something? Just check the container.
I use this recipe from here (http://www.ezhealthydiet.com/hummus-recipe.ht ml). I recommend adding cumin!
Ingredients:
1 15 oz can chickpeas drained
2 cloves garlic minced
Juice of 1 lemon
½ teaspoon sea salt
2 tablespoons tahini
2 Tablespoons virgin olive oil
Place all ingredients in your food processor with the S blade and puree to desired consistency. I generally add a little purified water to get a nice creamy consistency. Taste and adjust flavors to your individual liking.
For variety try adding ½ cup fresh parsley and ½ teaspoon cumin for a more Middle Eastern flavor.
*** I just anaylzed this recipe using the CC's Recipe Analyzer and I got 165 cals per 41 g serving (5.7 g fat, 22.2 g carbs, 6.4 g fiber, 7.3 g protein). I estimated the above recipe to yield 12 servings.
My container says 2 Tablespoons. http://caloriecount.about.com/cc/item/86833.h tml
And yeah, I second what babyd said. It's made of good things. It's delicous on veggies, pita chips, sandwiches, wraps, pitas, etc.
I have some Baba Ghanouj that I'm a huge fan of, which I think is a caloric deal: http://caloriecount.about.com/cc/item/116552. html
Yum!
Oh, I just love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love HUMMUS!
=^..^= MOLLY
Ditto what Molly said... Hummus is high in fibre, high in protein, and if you use tahini, high in omega fats. 2 tablespoons (enough for 5 or 6 crackers, or 2 slices of bread) is 50 calories.
If you have a blender, or food processor... don't buy it, make it. It is fast, easy, and cheap. Here is my recipe and it is the same directions as the previous... put it all in a food processor and cream... put in a tub, and chill.
2 cups garbanzo beans;
3 garlic cloves, peeled
3 tbsp lemon juice
1/4 cup tahini
1/3cup plain yogurt; (I use mayonnaise or sour cream if I don't have this in the house)
1/2tsp ground cumin
1/4tsp black pepper
1 tsp chopped cilantro

Could I use hummus as a replacement to chipped beef on toast ? I know it wont taste anything like this but was wondering if anyone just spreads it on toast and eats it warm? I have never tried hummus but have been seriously considering buying some because everyone on here makes it sound so yummy~
I always have hummus in my fridge. I use it instead of butter or margarine on crackers, toast, bread, in many sandwiches, on flatbread... hummus is an excellent dip for veggies. (raw celery, carrot, broccoli, cauliflower) It is also fibre, and beans, so if you overdo it, (1/2 cup or more) no one will let you in the room or car with them. ![]()
I have never tried the boiled eggs thingy, but it sounds very good.

I also love hummus with other things mixed in such as red pepper or sundried tomatoe.

i make hummus with plain yogurt too, and it definitely cuts down on the fat content... if that's a concern. then i don't feel bad if i eat too much of it! and i really don't notice a difference in taste. plus it doesn't get so stuck in my food processor, because the yogurt makes it more smooth. ha ha.
my future mother-in-law is a hummus fan too, and showed me 2 really yummy wraps: hummus wrapped up with green apple chunks and raisins; and hummus wrapped up with cucumber chunks and strips of red peppers. you'll never know unless you try it!
if you just follow the recipe above, it's really easy to make, and probably much cheaper. but you can also find it near the deli section in a supermarket. you can eat it on crackers, veggies, flat bread... just dip and enjoy. or, just buy a few wraps (you know, flat round things that hold a sandwich instead of bread...) and be creative.
from wikipedia:
Hummus or hummus bi tahini (Arabic: حُمُّص&lr m; , Hebrew: חומוס) also spelled hamos, houmous, hommos, hommus, hummos, hummous or humus) is a dip or spread made of blended chickpeas, sesame tahini, lemon juice, and garlic.
In Arabic the word hummus is used to describe the dish or just chickpeas by themselves. The full name of the dish is hummus bi tahina (Arabic: حُمُّص بالطحي 606;ة) "chickpeas with tahini". Hummus is popular in various local forms throughout the Middle Eastern world.
