What's your favorite fruit and when is it in season?

Quote  |  Reply

I've never been a big fan of strawberries, but I heard a radio advert that they were in the peak of season right now and to pick some up at Publix.  The next day I was at Publix so I picked them up...

Just ate some for dessert and woo-ha they were delicious!  It's definitely not my favorite, but people's tastes change over the years (you couldn't have gotten me so much as to eat a piece of steak 2 years ago and now I *LOVE* it)

So what is your favorite fruit and when will it be in season so I can eat it?

I just discovered a really great produce place in town and I had a bag full of huge, crisp, sweet, juicy green grapes yesterday and a divine mango today. yum!!

Watermelon...or apples.

I love almost all fruit and thus go through phases of what my favourite type is. Normally, my favourites are either raspberries (though it is hard to find good raspberries) or mangos. But I got to say that in my mood right now,  my favourite would definitely be: Nice, dark, delicious CHERRIES! Yum! I wish I could find some awesome BC cherries at this time of the year. Your topic definitely made me start craving some. :P

My faves are strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, pinapple, mango, pomegranite, and cherries - none of which are in season in Canada right now :(

We get berries and cherries in season in June/July, and mangos, pineapple and pomegranites don't grow here

I love fresh figs.  I think they are my favorite because they are only available in the late summer here.  They're a soft fruit and don't travel well, and don't keep, so you won't see them shipped in from anywhere.  It's a yearly treat for me.

My all the time favorite is local apples, not the ones that have been in cold storage for 11 months, but the "keeper" type that you only find in small orchards.  Although the variety offered in the supermarket is getting a lot better.

I love green apples and their usually avail. all year. I also love strawberries and since their at their peak now I need to get me some. ehe. also Black cherries, but they are not in season till june. I love to just get a huge bag and eat them while sitting on the beach.

i honestly dont know if there is a certain season for them but i am OBSESSED w kiwis!

DEEEE LISH

Bing Cherries!!!  Yummy.

Mangos, strawberries and pineapple!! Oh man I want some fruit like ASAP!

My favourite time of the year is when fresh produce from British Columbia is available: Blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, peaches, apricots, plums. WOW. holy cow I almost forgot my all-time favourite: BC Cherries! Better than candy.

That explains why I've never seen a fresh fig at a grocery store.  I see them on cooking shows and they look interesting, but I've never seen a fresh one in person.

Favourite fruit?  Tough call.  I generally prefer raspberries to strawberries.  Perfect strawberries are yummy, but I find they're normally overripe or underripe and I don't much like them then.  I'm currently going through a pear phase since they're practically the only fruit at the grocery store with any flavour in the middle of winter.

But if I could have any fruit perfectly fresh, I'd probably pick either green grapes, nectarines or raspberries.  Narrowing the choice down to three was hard enough; I can't narrow any further.  So, can I pick a fruit salad?  :-)

The problem is that its almost impossible to get great tasting fruit from supermarkets.  We have relatives that own an apricot orchard, and my god, a tree ripened, juicy ripe apricot is to die for.  But i'd never buy them in the supermarket because they taste like crap.  I'm the same with most stone fruits.  I love love LOVE peaches, plums and cherries but the ones you get in shops are so tasteless.

Same with strawberries.  If you go to a pick your own place they are juicy and sweet, but I've just finished some strawberries from the supermarket and sure, they look like strawberries but the certainly don't taste like it.  They are so unbelievably bland it's awful.

In my old house I also an amazing orchard about a 5 min drive away that grew the most incredible braeburn apple.  When they came into season we'd absolutely gorge on them.  Supermarket apples... MEH.

*sigh* I dont have a car at the moment, but when i get one I'm soo finding a farmers market round here.

CHERRIES!  The thing that is so sad, is that the season is SOOO short.  But I certainly enjoy them while I can!

Next favorite would be nectarines, followed by strawberries.

All from my farmer's market though, the stuff at the grocery store (even Whole Foods) doesn't even begin to compare!

Peaches.  Fat, sweet, juicy peaches picked at the height of summer straight from the tree.  They have to be so juicy that the juice runs down your arm as you eat it.  Yum.

After that would be anything picked straight from a tree/bush - mulberries, plums, figs, mangos, strawberries, apricots, litchis.  Hm.. litchis.  I can't remember when last I even had a litchi.  Sweet oranges.  Granadillas.  I just really love fruit.  My kids would rather eat fruit than candy.  Growing up we had a lot of these trees/bushes in our own backyard, or in the case of the peaches, our neighbor's yard that grew right next to our wall Laughing.

I don't know if litchis and granadillas are even available here in the USA.  I was born and raised in South Africa.

It's hard to just pick one.

Apples - especially honeycrisp variety.  Autumn is the best when they have just been harvested.

Pomegranates are way up there too - also fall, around Halloween.  We have two big trees in the backyard and I freeze the seeds so we can eat them through the year till we run out.

Peaches - fresh peaches in the middle of the summer, so good.

i have a thing about nectrines (cant stand the 'furryness' of peaches), but for the life of me i have no idea when they are in season... i just buy them from my local fruit stall when they appearwhich seems to be at rendom times to be honest! I also love raspberries (raspberries and nectrines together in a fruit salad is just heaven), i have a thing about melons too, and also pineapple, mango, plums (which are really nice to make into a plum crumble which can be made healthy if you REALLY try hard!)

I generally love fruit! I live in the UK though, so most fruits are imported, apart from apples and some berries in season.

nothing beats a fresh peach on a hot summer day! :)

Oh yeah, cherries are my fav too.  I also love Mangoes and Nectarines.  Yum!

Watermelon, pineapple and black grapes!
